An old museum with displays of Kazakh history. It’s not particularly well organized, and the information placards are seemingly randomly distributed. Not exceedingly English friendly, and services are very basic. I think you can skip it while visiting Almaty in favor of other museums.

What a pity I was in Almaty only one day, and it was a day-off for visiting museum, however still can enter the building to say hi to the security guy. Still give this place 5 stars for its location and architecture.

Didnt worth the visit. There were some traditional clothes from the each ethnic in Kazakhstan, and the collections were poorly presented. No English explanation. Not even English brochures at gate. (I asked for it, and they brought me one from somewhere.)The building was huge and the garden was beautiful. They should think about the better usage of this place. (e.g. museum cafes, souvenir shops)

Great place to learn about the history of Kazakhstan, although if you dont speak Kazakh or Russian you may find it difficult to fully enjoy all the exhibits, as only some of them have English descriptions.

National museum, slightly strange though. Theres a hall in the middle where there was a Christmas market in december, surrounded by the museum rooms around. Many of the rooms were closed. The only exhibits I could access were an ethnographic collection, an exhibition on Kazakh independence and a bunch of stuffed animals.

I could have rate it zero if possible. Really needs a lot of work. Its sad to see that the museum is dilapidated when rest of almaty is coming up well. Display is poorly presented. I read no English description was available but thought I would come here to appreciate the display. Alas I could not. Hope much work can be done to make this beautiful architecture a museum this great city truly deserved.

Impressive building and a nice introduction to Kazakh culture. However, the collection is not very big and almost all the signs are only in Russian or Kazakh.

Many rooms are closed at this time as the museum is undergoing renovations. The highlight of the museum as I remember it form my childhood was the mammoth skeleton, which at this time was not available to see. The rest of the exhibitions are interesting to see, if you are interested in learning about the history of Kazakhstan from the early ages until today. They have walking tours available upon request in different languages, English included.

Quite good with some explanations in English. But they were tiny in size and down and not next to each exhibit so it was cumbersome. In addition it was so hot in the museum. Nevertheless worths going if youre in Almaty.

The bottom floor of the museum starts with pre-history including dinosaur bones and ancient pottery. As you go upward in the museum, you move forward through time. There are displays of traditional nomadic lifestyle as well as displays representing each cultural group that is now part of Kazakhstan. The very top floor and last exhibit features modern Kazakhstan and includes gifts from the countries which have embassies in Kazakhstan and even a real space suit. In addition to the regular exhibit, you can also purchase special tickets to go into the specual collections of the museum with a guide. The 1500 KZT ticket is for an exhibit of national treasures which are all made of gold. The national treasures exhibit was my personal favorite. The 1000 KZT ticket is for entrance with a historian guide to a exhibit tracing Kazakh ethnicity back to pre-historic times. It shows the racial mixing of features and DNA over time starting with replicas based off of prehistoric human fossils.

The museum has 7 galleries ranging from prehistoric to present day successes in mining and industry. The building was not air conditioned and even those it is a very large Soviet era monolith, it was somewhat stuffy but bearable. The tickets were 450 tenge each which is about $5 AUD or $3 US. The place is easily reachable along a main thoroughfare. We caught the No.63 bus using the "onay" card which we bought outside a metro station.

From official site:The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the oldest and largest museums not only in Kazakhstan, but also the entire Central Asian region. The collections of the museum include about 300 thousand objects. Currently, the museum has seven main stationary halls. Diverse collection provides a good picture of the paleontological past, of the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary history and cultural tradition of Kazakhstan. The creation of museum collections was initiated in the 30s of the 19th century in Orenburg, at Neplyuev Military School "Museum of the Orenburg region". One of the organizers was a famous linguist, author of "Explanatory Dictionary" Vladimir Dal.In different years the museum collection composed not only the museum collection of the Orenburg region (1924), but also the Zhetysu (SemirechyeRegional Museum (1929and the National anti-religious museum (1941which was placed in the building of the Voznesenski Cathedral in Alma-Ata city. This unique architectural complex was built in 1904-1907 and designed by the well-knownVerny architect A.P.Zenkov.In 1944 the museum was assigned to the 1st category and received its present name - the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan. This building was constructed by architects Yu.Ratushnyi, Z.Mustafin and B.Rzagaliyev in 1985. It is considered one of the finest buildings of modern architecture of the Almaty city. The total area of the museum building is 17,557 square meters.Among the exhibits there are unique masterpieces: gold articles which reflect cultural tradition of tribes of early nomads of Kazakhstan. Found during excavations in Zhalauly, Pokrovka, Kargaly villages, Shilikty kurgan; collection of Scythian-Saka bronze boilers and altars (connected with the cult of fire and ancestors, made in the tradition of the animal style of Saks), personal seal of S.Toraigyrov, certificate of merit signed by S. Altynsarin, manuscript of Turagul about the father of Abai, the first issue of "Aikap" magazine, rifle of Imanuly, personal complexes of ShokanValihanov, Zhayu Musa, AmreKashaubayev, Alibi Zhangildin, SakenSeifullin, KulyashBaiseitova and others.Great contribution to the formation of the museums collection made well-known figures of the Kazakh culture, literature and art, scientists, historians, politicians and public figures. Among them A.Baitursynov, A. Zhirenchin, G. Mustafin, K. Badyrov, A.Margulan and many others. At present, the museum is headed by Nursan Alimbay – a well-known scientist-ethnologist in our country and abroad. He is the author of more than three hundred scientific and popular publications, including monographs on various aspects of traditional culture and ethnography of the Kazakhs, folklore and museology. In recent years, with the support of partners of the museum have been implemented ambitious museum projects - exposition complexes: "Open fund. Archaeological gold of Kazakhstan", "Museum of Anthropology", "Hall of N.G. Khludov". For the first time in the museum practice of Kazakhstan have been implemented the projects on creation of a series of scientific reconstructions of costumes and accessories of ancient archetypes - "Andronovo woman of Bronze Age"; "Kangui woman 1st century BC – 4th century AD"; "Kipchak Warrior IX-XI"; "Huns Warrior 2nd – 3rd century AD"; "Hun warrior 5th– 3rd century BC".Since 2008, in the museum launched its activity the Scientific Library, established on the initiative and with direct participation of Nursan Alimbay. During these years, was introduced the program "Museolog" e-cataloging and certification of fund collections, initiated by UNESCO, which is an innovation in museum practice of Central Asia.

The building consists of three floors. And the exhibition is at the third floor. There are a lot of photos for Kazakhstan history. But there is few or no English description of the photos. The first floor was a small market selling Kazakhstan native souvenir.

Fascinating exhibits from paleotological to cultural helped me understand much more about this fascinating country. The price is very reasonable, not like some countries that charge foreigners much higher prices. Many if the exhibits have explanations in English as well as Russian and Kazakh. There are two small independent gift shops near the front entrance. Rest room facilities and snack bar are available.

Dont forget to pay for additional ticket to get access to the protected room for the museums gold and jewelry collection. It costs 1300 Tenge on top of the regular entry fee. You can ask for a guide who speaks English and several other languages. No photo and video is allowed in here. There are very interesting and extremly fine handmade gold aertifact and precious stone on display.

Enormous stylish building with interesting spaces to fill yet it looks like a High school end of the year science-history fair. This Museum is so badly curated !!! The information in English, French or German are whimsical. This Museum is a pale echo to the one in Nursultan (Astana). The reward to go there is located on the 2nd floor with bits and bobs on the Soviet era spacial program and, possibly, one if the 3 Sputnik prototype... no information available!!!The Museum shop is unbelievably lame.

Huge building, interesting from the architectural point of view. Museum itself has exhibitions on prehistory, a bit on stone and iron age, something on nomad tribes etc. I found the part on ethnic minorities in Kazakhstan very interesting. Museum could do with some refurbishing, it could be more interactive.

The building is impressive and located in a lovely park. The museum itself is okay, there are a few nice objects but nothing that will blow your mind. Mostly recreations rather than actual archeological artifacts. There was a very charming series of dioramas about the various ethnic groups living in Kazakhstan.Go if you have the time, but don’t worry about missing it, if coming here strains your itinerary.

It costs 500 tenge (1.25 eurofor a foreigner to visit this museum. It has 7 separate halls and you can visit 4 halls for the base price, other rooms are 1000 tenge each. Out of the 4 rooms we could see, one room was used for presidents propaganda. From the rooms name it was supposed to be about modern Kazakhstan, but president was in every picture of that room (so roughly couple thousand pictres). There is also very little information in English and not much more of it in Kazakh or Russian. Information is also not very consistent and we did not learn a lot about the Kazakhstan from the museum. It looked more like a storage place for historical items. A guide is available in English, but we did not take one.

Unless you speak Russian, this museum is going to leave you with more questions than answers. Nice way to spend 1 hour looking at stuff which you have no idea what it is about. Part ancient Kazakh history, part during WW2. Good thing, its affordable, 300 tenge locals, 500 for foreign tourist.

I went to this museum with the promise that it was somewhere I could spend two whole days in. It has, in fact, only two permanent exhibits, one on the history of Kazakstan, and one on the life of the president. The cost seemed very inviting, but you ended up having to pay 5 times as much as the entry fee to get into the temporary exhibits too. I saw the whole place in 2 hours, and that included 1/2 hour wandering around the craft fair in the atrium.
