Caves of Diros - Tourist attraction in Pyrgos, Greece
Didnt like it. We were set in a boat and carried through the cave for about 20 to 30 minutes. You needed to keep your head down all the time otherwise you could get yourself a nice headwound from the narrow ceiling. Didnt see too much from the cave though. And of course we were constantly reminded that no videos were allowed. So in the end I saw some of my blurred pictures... And the other time I was busy keeping my head down.
Beautiful place!!
If you are having a business meeting for the deal of a lifetime and your business partner demands to meet in this cave, go there. If you love caves and this one is on your bucket list, go there. Otherwise you might want to save yourself some trouble and money and skip this one. Its a nice cave but you will be busy keeping your head down and hence not really be able to see too much.
The Caves of Diros are situated in the Peloponnese Region of Greece at Pyrgos Dirou. These are historic caves normally with small boat cruises to view fantastic stalagmites, stalactites and other formations. However when we were there in July 2022 there was major reconstruction of the visitor facilities which required us to go in via the normal exit place which meant the small boat excursions were not available (running). Definitely worth a visit.
The most beautiful cave ever. Not to be missed. The boat part is a must, its the most beautiful there.
A must see place. Awesome structures and colours. Buy the ticket that includes the walking part and take your time going through the last part of the cave and looking at the details. Amazing!
I have been to many great caves all over the world and I must say that this cave is right up there towards the top. The stalactites must be just about the best in the world alone. Then there is the boat ride through crystal clear water. A fabulous experience
Arrive early 9:00 am to buy tickets and wait for opening Among one of the long and large caves of Natipim, it is amazingly beautiful and not to be missed, a must see
Really amazing cave. The boat tour was really cool too, just the guide only spoke a few sentences in English and the rest in Greek. €15 each for the whole tour.
Its the tour that you have to do if you are in the area, amazing cave !!
Bloody ripoff!!!The boat tour races through the cave as if it was a rowing competition. The speed is so high, you cant focus your camera in he larger caverns. The boatmen is thoroughly unfriendly. Never again!!!Dont do it, and if you do, content yourself with the walking tour.
The boat tours sell out quickly but doing the walk through was actually better!
Beautiful caves, amazing sea views and beaches just around the corner. On 21/08/2022, the cave tour was shortened due to a rise of the water level. The ticket price was reduced.During busy periods, it is better to reserve tickets.
If going in August, book tickets online for the boat ride at least two weeks in advance. I didnt do this and couldnt be bothered to show up by 9am to see if I could find extra tickets, so I did only the walking tour, which was still fantastic. The caves are wonderful and worth visiting.
The ticket service opens at 9.00 but there is already a queue so you should arrive half an hour earlier. We arrived at 9.45 so we waitwd for less than an hour after we bought our tickets. Didnt bother us, there is a small cafeteria outside and there is a clear anouncement for your ticket numbers. Its totally worth it, it is a unique experience. There is a small boat of 5 to 6 people and there is a helpful guide that shows you around.
I’ve been visiting the caves for almost 35 years, every 2-3 years. This summer I went with my girlfriend and our children. We went in the cave and the skipper seemed to be very hasty because they’re getting paid by the number of trips, so it was obvious that he was in hurry.First time in my life I did the trip so fast. I couldn’t even translate to my gf, because the boat was going very fast.I’m the end I went to complain and they asked me to wait and have another round for free, but I would have to wait an hour. We finally left because we had a road trip, but, to be fair, the responsible person was very kind and he even offered us ice cream. The skippers are locals, they do not speak English and the audio tour was not available during our visit and it may not be available also during your visit. It’s obvious that the skippers are not educated to provide a professional guidance and they’re good only to drive the boat and to give some poor explanation in Greek. Compared to a guide that I had in a cave in Belgium, it’s the day and night. The guy in Belgium was pationate for what he was doing and he was speaking 3 different languages. Our skipper didn’t even know that it was not allowed to record a video or take a photo with the use of the flash! He told us that there is not a problem and that we could use the flash :oAlso, keep in mind that the tickets are getting sold out during the summer days and that there is a possibility that you go and there are no tickets. Make sure you arrive before 10-11 in the morning! In some words: The cave is amazing and worth a visit! Totally recommended! But make sure you arrive early and also mention that you do not want to complete the route fast. Ask if the audio tour is available. Important to know: you can buy tickets online!
The rating is just for the caves, which are beautiful indeed. Everything else was just chaos and lack of manners! Almost everyone has been rude, the ride was quick and in total silence (the guide didnt speak English! He actually didnt speak at all except for some rude orders yelled at us), the waiting lines were so random. Despite all of this the caves were amazing and they worth a visit.
An amazing mystical and magical place you have to visit if you’re around.
Quite an amazing place, the first part of the cave is done by boat or should I say a long canoe. Sadly the day we came we were told that the water level was very high so only a small portion the cave could be visited on water.Nevertheless we had a great time, and can agree that the Diros Caves are among the most significant natural sites in Greece, truly spectacular. I understand the caves formed hundreds of thousands of years ago and that the stalactites and stalagmites that are now underwater were formed when the sea level was much lower than it currently is.The temperature is much cooler in the caves, especially in the water section rather than the land part of the caves, so if youre feeling cold easily, taking a cardigan or jumper might be a good idea.
Nice cave. We went by boat and by foot.
On the website of the cave it says that it is open from 9am to 5pm but when we got there (a 2 hour drive from kalamatawe were informed that there was no more boat ride and you could enter only in the first small section of the cave and on foot because the boat ride tickets are limited and the were sold out from 11am. This information though wasnt mentioned on the website and it was mentioned to you only at the ticket booth which is ridiculous because the cave is at least a 2 hour drive from any big city like Kalamata, Spartan and especially Athens which is 300 kilometers drive. This is very unfortunate because the cave is a beautiful place but the management is just awful.
The experience on the boat is amazing! The customer service and the amenities offered are terrible. Nobody speaks English and they do not inform the tourists that tickets have sold out. If management does not change then the Diros Cave will remain a tragic tourist experience for all those that cannot find tickets to visit the caves.
The most amazing sight in the area. There is a guide which tells you about how the cave was found and what process was needed to make it an enjoyable place for tourists. One more thing that I enjoyed are the names of some places in the cave. Its a must-see!
Worth the trip, amazing experience. Kids loved it. Just make sure you book online, otherwise you’ll need to be up and at the caves at 9am to try and get a ticket.
Very beautifull and well organised trip
We travelled 2 hours to see the caves and felt it was worth it. They were amazing and the boat trip is a must. Staff were very helpful too, we accidentally booked the worng day and they allowed us to visit. Book ahead as it does get busy.
Unfortunately it was under construction and therefore only about a quarter available. They should make a better website and in English. It was hard to find any information about the construction works.
The cave was very nice, 25’ boat tour in the cave plus 10’ walk on our way out. Very nice experience and also a nice break from the heat outside. Recommended. The experience is not suitable for people on wheelchair.
Well….The final corridor of caves was really beautiful but Be Careful…all of this place is under construction, so we weren’t able to get on the boat inside the caves as we hoped to. There was no information that the caves have not been open for boat trip for the last 12 months and still are not!!! Please note ….only short walk (not boat tripat the final cave is posible.
When you experience this first hand you understand why people would think this is the path to Hell.
Partially closed and lack of communication. What a pity, these caves look so promising!
Worth the visit but note that due to renovation access by row boat is not possible at this time
PARTIALLY CLOSED!Boat tours, which are promoted to be the main attraction, are suspended until further notice. You can only walk 300 meters in and back until the place where boats used to disembark. This is still pittoresque and not very frequented, so I didnt came here for nothing. I still rate it 2/5 because they arent able to inform about the partial closure on their homepage. Greek organization...
These really are fantastic caves: I dont think Ive ever seen such impressive stalactites/stalagmites. The boat ride is quite short but atmospheric, and then you can wander at your own pace through the pedestrian part of the cave. Take your time and enjoy the amazing formations. Useful info - they require a Covid passport or a rapid test (the chemist back up the road in Pyrgos Dirou did one for our teenage son: very quick and only €10and once youve bought your tickets Id drive down to the entrance where there are toilets and a cafe/shop.
We did the small slope due to Covid regulations. Totally worth it. We had a boat ride and also a walk through the caves to the exit. Pictures and videos dont do the trick. Its better to see for yourself.
Caves of Diros is an amazing place! A must! You should read about the caves before the visit, because you will get no details from the persons who work there! They speak only greak! But anyway visiting the caves is an unique experience!
Beautiful place but it doesnt make up for the price. You have a 10-15 min in a boat with Greek explanation (they knew we didnt speak greekand then you walk for another 10 min before coming out on the other side
Very impressive ! And quite enjoyable to find some fresh air in the middle of a heat wave.
A unique cave and a must visit if you are near by. There are plenty of Corvid-19 precautions active and all visitors are temperature taken. Cave is wonderful and ride used to be a long one, but due to Corvid-19 has been cut off to only 300 meters and another 600 meters walk. Prices remain as before Corvid-19 ride cut off though...
Very nice cave that you should visit if you are around, important to know - now because of the Covid19 the boat ride is only going for 300m instead of 1.5 km, thats shame but still pretty beautiful, after the boat ride you have another 300m of walking inside of the cave so overall thats good
Although the boat trip time is reduced and exploring the caves on foot is also limited due to covid-19 restrictions for €10 its well worth it, stunning caves - a must see!
Very good place if you like to see Caves and stalactite.it is a short trip. Dont think hours. With boat after just 5 minutes you will reach end of the sea path. and after sea path you will have to walk until exit. And one more short trip here just 5 minutes more. But caves very nice.Temperature was 🌡️ inside 16 degrees in September. If you have asthma Highly warn dont visit. Cause deep of the cave starting the walk you can feel less oxygen.Cons: Expensive. 10€ adult. 7€ child. So just 10 minutes trip it is very expensive.
Ive seen a lot of caves in europe, highlight of this one is they let you take photos (which is rare), and the water is crystal clear in the cave. I was on the shortened tour for Covid, about a 5 min boat ride and then a 6 minute walk. Impressive structures but the views and mini beach outside are more impressive. For 10 euros I would have skipped in hindsight, Id go if your into caves or into crossing off all the mass tourist sites, though one plus very little wait to get in. Note ticket booth not at entrance, get ticket and park car there first, then drive further down to entrance parking.
Wonderful place, but the boat guide doesnt explain a word in English, for a recognized natural cultural heritage it is a shame.Currently, the exhibition involves 300 m by boat and another 300 m walkingThe beach outside is also lovely, but not organized
The best experience of my life. The biggest cave with water in Europe. One of the biggest and best preserved caves of the world. Very kind and experienced people that guide you and give you safety and educational information. Perfect temperature if it is a summer.Try not to touch anything in the cave. It is a whole different ecosystem that should not be disturbed. The walking distance at the end was also very interesting. Please visit. I will definitely go back.
We went to visit this cave in August and really enjoyed it. It is so amazing and interesting not only for kids, but for adults as well. I did not expect much and was nicely surprised. However I have to mention it worth to go with boat only. It is very simply and even boring without one. Please note if you hope to get a boat in August you have to be there before 11.00. The last booking for the day was sold at 10.40. Afterwards you can visit just a small part of it and without boat. We were lucky to get one at 10.30, but everyone was already informed that boats are fully booked and only few tickets left. There was so many people behind who did not get the boat. Do get there as early as possible or pre-book in advance.
Unfortunately we only got to experience the land portion of the caves, as when we arrived around 1 pm (after driving for 2 hours from Kalamatawe were told that we were too late for the boat rides. The guy at the ticket booth told us to arrive at 9 am, to make sure we get in a boat. We decided to get the reduced tickets and see the land part, which was very impressive nevertheless.
Amazing cave 45 mins tour around the cave first part was on boat then walking. €13 EUR entrance fee .you will love it one of the most beautiful caves.
Beautiful and very impressive cave. Its really worth to see. If you will be in South part of Greece go and see that cave . Ticket for 13 € normal , student 8 €.
We brought our family here today for a very enjoyable day trip.We had to wait around 15 minutes before entering the cave. The staff here is NOT friendly (actually quite grumpy)… didnt bother us though because are we there to make friends?I apologize to the 2 ladies sitting behind us in our boat… if our 3 children interfered with your tranquil experience--- It seemed like no one in the other boats were talking. Are you supposed to be silent? At 1 point I thought it would be helpful if the tour guide Davison information about the cave come up but I guess thats not in his job description. Towards the end he warmed up a bit and started talking to us about his experiences in the cave. I wish she spoke more during the time we were in the cave. The cave inside is absolutely gorgeous. Ive read a bunch of reviews from other caves and Im happy to say that they have preserved this cave very well- You are not allowed to touch anything when you are in the boat and when youre walking there are restrictions on where you can go.We had a very memorable experience and took lots of pictures. Thank you for making such great memories from our family!
