4200 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, United States, Pittsburgh
This iconic 42-story building at the University of Pittsburgh was commissioned in 1921.
Best school ever, wonderful professors, and challenging courses. The nationality rooms are beautiful! I have had many undergraduate courses in these rooms. The strict rules are you must not touch any artifact in the room, move any furniture, or leave any trash behind. The 36th floor houses the honors college, and a beautiful view of the city! The building just renovated their elevator system, now they are much faster and efficient! There is a computer lab and Cafe in the basement. There are plenty of places for you to study in this building!
I love visiting this place and have brought many people here. The classrooms are nice to look at.
Wonderful experience. The rooms are so interesting and the architecture is breathtaking. We didnt plan our visit so we didnt have a lot of time to explore. Definitely planning to return soon!
The view from 36th floor is fantastic.. i liked the nationality rooms here in 3rd floor other than that i didnt find anything else much interesting. But the class rooms are well maintained and the lawn is awesomely maintained 👍
This is a fascinating and unique classroom building. While there are guided tours and some rooms one can visit for a fee, it is also possible to explore country specific classrooms on the 3rd floor for free. In each room there is a switch that triggers an audio history of each room. Since these are active classrooms one may not be able to enter some. Definitely worth a visit. We also stopped on the 34th/35th floors to enjoy a sweeping vista.
Great architectural piece. Must see nationality rooms!
A beautiful spot on campus with fun rooms decorated based on countries! It feels like Hogwarts!
Always fun to stop by and look at the nationality rooms! Just dont come too late so theyre not all locked up - I want to say theyre all locked by about 6pm but theyre used as classrooms so they dont all get locked at once. Theyre on the first and third floors.
Huge! Magnificent! Beautiful! Pitt Tower or the Cathedral of Learning is a fascinating structure in the UPitt campus. Must visit!
Dramatic height of 535 feet. This building’s purposes are academic. You can experience a mini- tour of heritages as you are transported from 5th-century B.C.E. Greece to 18th - century Ukraine.A Gothic Place- The 42-story Cathedral of Learning, long known as the “world’s tallest schoolhouse.Because of this building’s looking, it named ‘CATHEDRAL’ but it never had been a religious thing. If you go to 36th floor you can see wonderful view of Pittsburgh!!
You will spend several hours here. Such a cool place to explore. Part library, part college campus, and upstairs they have different classrooms representing different countries. Its like Epcot, but for classrooms. Totally worth the trip!
Awesome place, sweet rooms to check out, ride to the top and enjoy the view!!!!
Beautiful place on the inside, and if you go up all the floors to the top there is a nice view!
Regular silent study room kind of set up building and department blocks with a lot of floors
This was a very interesting place, a unique experience. I wish they would have longer hours. Time spent well, recommend to visit.
A great place to visit when in pittsburgh, has a interesting view of the city from the 36th floor also do visit the rooms dedicated to nations around the world.
Highly recommend taking the international rooms guided tour... the best $4 youll ever spend... but you have to go on the weekend as the rooms are used as classrooms during the week. Fasciating history and architecture. You can also then go up to the 36th floor to get an incredible view of Pittsburgh
Take the guided tour!!!!!! Well worth the small cost. Otherwise, the Rooms of Nations are locked
Part of the University of Pittsburgh. It was the highlight of the tour. Great views fin the 35th floor.
The Cathedral of Learning, or "Cathy" as locals call it, is an impressive building in every way. From outside the structure is great and has a presence over the region.Inside, the nationality rooms are the highlight of the visit. If youre a culture buff youll love learning about all the details in each room. Each one of them is modelled after a different culture, such as German, French, Irish, Turkish etc.Sometimes the students have classes in the rooms though, during which you cant enter. Theres also an audio guide you can take to learn even more about them.
Great cathedral feel. The national rooms are a must. Delicate nuances of European styles. I particularly liked the ease and familiarity the young students use the site whose architecture could be easily impressive and oppressive. No patriarchal intimidation atmosphere. Hope the youth is really having pleasure learning.
Went with family to see the Nationality Rooms decorated for Christmas. Its always a fun trip for us and we love learning about the different cultures. The information on their website is wrong though - tickets were a lot more expensive than listed and parking information was wrong. Several odd the things were also closed for classes and cleaning. Not very wheelchair accessible either.
Great place to go and see the international rooms. Tours are very inexpensive, or you can go on your own, but will be with limited access.
Always good to see her. Beautiful building, interesting history, and they have new elevators 😍. Definitely go during the day when you can see the Nationality rooms because they’re beautiful.
Straight up Hogwarts, if you go into some of the bathrooms you can even find "Harry lives" or "i solemly swear to tell no lies" carved into the walls of some stalls lmao. Always something cool and interesting to find in this place, and beautiful around Christmas time.
Every time Im here I see something new! I love coming to wander around here or just sitting inside the beautiful common rooms. It looked really nice decorated in each countrys version of holiday festivity.
Amazing building from the 1930s. The inside and exterior are both impressive. The nationality rooms are very nice - although I only saw one as the rooms were not open when I visited. Its the second tallest university building in the world, and can be seen from all over the area. Well worth visiting in person.
Beautiful architecture in the heart of University of Pittsburgh campus!
My family loves going to the Slovak and Polish festivals there also the ethnic rooms are beautifully decorated for Christmas
Wow is all I can say! So many beautiful rooms, each in a different nationality, representing the classroom styles of each country. Im a stained glass fanatic, and theres beautiful pieced in many if the rooms.
One of the highlights of the whole city. The building is the tallest educational building in North America. The gorgeous Gothic Revival/ Art Deco tower reigns over Oakland with a commanding awesome presence. The inside is even more interesting. The 1st and 3rd floor have "nationality rooms" celebrating various cultures from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. It can hard to see all of them in one trip because they are almost all functional classrooms. Also dont miss the view from the 36th and 37th floors. This is a must see!
A must visit place if you are traveling to Pittsburgh for the first time. Extravagant architecture. Historical classrooms. Overall a great experience!
So beautiful! Such great views of the surrounding campus, the conservatory and the park. What a unique and special place.
It is a beautiful cathedral. I can not believe it is a building as classrooms.
I am dreaming to check this place out inside. As outside it look gorgeous, fantastic and fabulous! Architecture inspired me.
Definitely more than I expected inside. The nationality rooms in floors 1 and 3 are enjoyable to tour, and the cathedral architecture throughout is interesting. I recommend going to the Honors College on floors 35 and 36 for the view.Note that the majority of the building is administrative and may not be suitable or available for touring.
Ever since I was young pup, I always loved this structure . every class room is designed to represent a country. The craft and detail are amazing. My first time inside was a field trip in grade school.
This was a beautiful place to walk around and learn about different countries. We took the self guided tour with an electronic tour guide and key hanging from a lanyard. The speakers on these lanyards provide enough volume for the individual using it. If you are in a group, its annoying to hear more than two of these recordings playing at once. We definitely didnt give ourselves enough time to look around. It will take a good couple hours to walk through all rooms on the first floor. The rooms on the 3rd floor are modernized and have switches in each one that one turned on will give a history about the room. This is better because it comes out of a speaker that place throughout the entire room. This visit was so worth it!
Monumental, great architecture, real life Hogwarts!
Its a great old building. I work there so cant complain too much! The biggest draw is the nationality rooms, which are classrooms designed by different heritage groups in the Pittsburgh region. The first floor architecture is also very nice with a large Commons Room that is three stories high. Around the holidays, the university decorates and the commons room looks like Hogwarts. One issue though is that there are no restrooms on the first floor. You have to go down to the ground floor or up to 2. Theres a family/single occupancy restroom on the ground floor. If youre there you should also go across the lawn and see Heinz Chapel. Lovely tiny cathedral with tons of education themed stained glass windows.
The national rooms on the first and third floor were amazing. The view from one of the tops windows was beautiful as well. This is a great place to visit and get a work out from climbing the steps. The elevators are also very fast.
Such a cool place. Makes me want to be a student here. My favorite part, besides The beautiful architect in the main room that made me feel like I was at Hogwarts, were the classrooms. Each one is the theme of a different country. Definitely worth the trip!
Cathy is the best building in town and simply amazing it feels like Hogwarts on the inside. A must visit for anyone in the area or visiting Pittsburgh
If you are visiting Pittsburgh this place is must to see. Nice architecture, like from Harry Potter movies. Inside Nationality rooms which you can see with or without guide (I think $5 for). Around the holidays the rooms are decorated according to nations customs. You will enjoy it!
This is a MUST SEE if you’re in Pittsburgh. I never get bored when I visit this place and can go a couple more times. The structure of it is magnificent both inside and outside. It has different country themed classes with audio description, music and you can even smell the difference in the rooms. It’s open to public on Saturdays. They close some classrooms at 2:30 and the rests are open till 4pm. So make sure you choose a time accordingly. And fon’t forget to charge your phone beforehand.
Beautiful cathedral and a perfect place to study. Although this place is constantly packed, it retains a quiet atmosphere at all times. The building itself is a wonder both inside and out. I recommend checking out the top floor; the view from the windows up there is amazing. Also check out the nationality rooms, the architecture will amaze you.
Beautiful architecture and great place to study. The national rooms arent open while class is in session, but the view on the 36th floor is great.
The grounds are lovely for walking around. The first floor is an elegant cathedral space with plenty of tables for students. The perimeter of the first floor has the Nationality Rooms which are a delight to stroll through. There is also a testing center where various people take GREs and other tests. The basement contains an eating area. Upper floors contain various Pitt offices. The highest public floor is 36, and you are allowed to go there to see the surrounding Oakland, Hill District, and CMU campus.
Very cool and worth the visit. You cant really access anything if your not a student but it a very fun building to be in and look around.
An other world experience. Anyone interested in history or education will find this a fascinating visit. The architecture is stunning and the details in the stone work are unbelievable. Not a church, not a library, not a coffee shop, not a used book store and not a museum; but rather the best little bits if all those venues.
