French Gothic Revival church housing the largest pipe organ ever built by Schantz Organ Co.
Mass for the blessing of the new Abbot of Benedictine Monastery of Newark
Great place, huge, but still a good place for a wedding
Such an extraordinarily beautiful church inside and outside.
Picture doesn’t do it much justice that I took, but was spur of the moment. Beautiful historical design, can see it from the highway coming into Newark. Would recommend paying a visit if you’re in the area.
I share a spiritual and personal connection to this place. I was baptized in the crypt and celebrated mass here in my childhood. It helped shape my fascination with Christianity and my religion.
One of the most beautiful Church ever
Beautiful cathedral and mosaics.
Such a stunning architectural settings inside and outside which is awesome for wedding shots.
Absolutely beautiful. Breathtaking architecture. The area is getting really bad at night though. If you’re a late nighter like me be very careful. Stopped by tonight like I do at least once a week and was saying a few prayers on the steps of the main entrance and a random man on a bicycle started yelling obscenities at me. He actually rode his bike up to within 20 feet of me and threatened to cut my throat. The last time I was there I was reflecting when something told me to turn around. There was a man within a couple of feet of me. He didn’t say anything but was acting like he just got caught. It was terrifying.I will continue to come here to reflect on my life but I’m worried it’s gonna cost me one day.
Beautiful church with the best architecture. I wish I could know the history and how it was build. Definitely the best build it. The church closes at 5PM.
I really want to share my experience. I went to this Basilica on a Sunday morning. After the mass, with all my friends we received the most amazing tour around the Basilica with a great man, David. I dont know anybody who knows more saints names and history about them than David. He explained each statute, every single detail inside the Basilica structure, inside and outside. He was awesome and did a wonderful job. I thank David for taking his time and giving us such an amazing tour.
The architecture is absolutely stunning, the artwork and the craftsmanship is so very gorgeous inside. A must visit if you are anywhere nearby Jersey city. Looks like this place is super famous for the photo shoots. Roadside parking is available and I think they’ve got additional parking lots nearby. It’s a must visit, add this amazing place to your itinerary if you’re visiting Jersey city. Added some of my captures from this place below……
Like nothing Ive ever seen. It left me speechless. Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship.
Beautiful ❤️Thank God I can read sheet music.Vocalist was amazing. The topics covered perfect timing and everyone was so welcoming.I was floored by the beauty 😍 of this cathedral.I wish I recorded the first speaker he spoke on one of my favorite wisdom scriptures. They are so helpful in the community as well, that means a lot to me.
Absolutely beautiful Inside! Highly recommended for weddings,as the pictures turn out gorgeous! My only complaint would be that they dont offer any private parking so you have to park on the street. We had slight trouble finding a spot and the surrounding area isnt very nice.FYI bathrooms are on the 3rd floor (they do have an elevator)
Its one of the most beautiful breathtaking places you ever wanna go and Visit. You could feel the peace and presence I will give it a 100 stars if there was. Thank you I hope we could help. You dont have to be of just feel free inside. and peace Inside.
The tour was FABULOUS and the wonderful gentleman who was our guide was so knowledgeable it was amazing .you will definitely appreciate all the time he spent researching the Basilica .
This cathedral is just a masterpiece in itself. The architecture is stunning and the artwork/craftsmanship is so beautiful inside and out. This is definitely a must visit when youre near the area!
Has to be one of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful places Ive been. The likes of St. Patricks Cathedral in Manhattan.
I am from Louisiana, and I love to look up anything French around me to visit. This beautiful French Gothic Revival church houses the largest pipe organ ever built by Schantz Organ Co. really stood out. Just visit this church is your sign.
Very artisticly beautiful. One of the most beautiful cathedrals in our area. Parking very challenging. Arrive early.
So calm and serene inside. I visited it on my birthday last week when brook branch had its full cherry bloom goin on and there it was.. beautiful church surrounded by pink and white blossoms. Must visit next time when u r in New Jersey
Fantastic architecture and Magnificent building
The one and only, a Newark icon and institution. A "sacred" space not only to worship, but to sit in, reflect, meditate and take in the awe inspiring architecture. If youre lucky, youll get to hear the riveting sound of the pipe organ.
Beautiful alter, magnificent windows and gorgeous lighting!
Beautiful mass with wonderful music. There was a great tour with tour guide of basilica.
Amazing work of Sacred Art and architectural detail. It reminded me of the churches in Europe. Went for Sunday Mass and unfortunately only had a very limited time to explore afterwards. Definitely a place you could spend a few hours. The Stations of the Cross are made with mosaics and the stain glass windows are stunning.
Impressive and grand fail to convey the majesty and awe of this great Cathedral. A Gothic gem, larger than St. Pats. A chapel remembering JPIIs visit and chapels dedicated to Saints of the various ethnic groups. Beautiful...absolutely beautiful. Very easy to pray in too, since it is much less crowded than St. Pats. The few times I’ve visited, most of the doors have been locked, except by the office. An added benefit is that there is a parking lot in the back. Next time, I may bring binoculars to see the details that escape the naked eye. One of the most beautiful churches I’ve been in here in the United States.
This is a sacred sanctuary regardless of religious affiliations. I’ve felt powerful solace and strength during my hardest moments of life just sitting in an empty pew. There are some special musical performances every so often that I have yet to see, but they look fabulous. Very grateful for opening your doors to everyone and I look forward to visiting once again to meditate in this gorgeous space.
What a beautiful basilica! I was lucky enough to call and VOILA!... I was able to visit the same day and was completely alone there for a good hour. Um not very religious but I am spiritual and believe in something larger than me, us, everyone. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Highly recommended to reboot your chakra or just be in the now!! The architecture really does make us wonder how amazing humans really can be!!!
Such a beautiful cathedral. 😍 If you are visiting NJ and into historic architecture, this is a masterpiece and a must do.
Majestic view. It is worth of my time travelling around Newark NJ. Add this to your itinerary when visiting New Jersey.
Stunning.. absolutely beautiful.. the architecture is something to be seen..
What an amazing building this is! It really is a very spiritual experience just to see it in person.
Beautiful church next to Branch Brook Park with cherry blossoms. The architecture is amazing. One of the entrances was blocked with chains and we didn’t know if we could enter. Really wish we could pay a visit and see the interior next time.
4/13/2021When we were arriving Branch Brook Park for the Cherry Blossoms Festival, we passed thru this splendid Cathedral church. Since it’s right by a side of the park, why don’t we pay a visit to this church? So we visited Essex County Cherry Blossom Center and enjoyed the cherry blossoms all along Branch Brook Park Drive by Branch Brook Lake. Then up to the bridge above the lake we kept going for about a quarter mile, then we came to the church.I really admired the beautiful structure and all the details of the church building! Everything seemed so sacred and beautiful to me even though I am not catholic. I wanted to go inside to pay a visit but the doors were locked. When I walked along the left side of the church to keep admiring the building, I saw some signs on the side doors about the public time. And bravo! It’s open to prayers from 7:00am to 7:00pm during weekdays, and 8:00am to 1:00 on Sundays, 8:00am to 7:00pm on Saturdays. But oops, this door’s locked, too! Then I saw some people going inside another smaller door at the rear. So I decided to go there and see my luck. Haha, the door could be opened and it led to an office with staff inside. I asked if I could pay a visit to the interior, the answer was yes. All I needed to do was to sign in on the visitor log.So I felt blessed to be able to see the interior of the church!Once inside, I felt serenity and sacredness. And it’s breathtaking!!After visiting, I asked the staff if I could make a small donation, she pointed an Offering box hanging on the wall right by the exit. So I was happy to make an offering just for letting me see the beautiful interior!BTW, you can drive directly to the church and park on the street.
Beautiful gothic architecture! Right next to Branch Brook Park, where the view must be amazing in the spring. Its one of the largest churches in the US and houses the largest organ in the States. Definitely check this out if youre in NJ or NYC.
This building is the fifth largest cathedral in North America, roughly the size of Westminster Abbey, stunningly beautiful, inside and out.It is 365 feet long and 161 feet wide. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. It is located at 89 Ridge Street in the Lower Broadway neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. We were there on a silent quiet day, got the street side parking. We had recently come from the Europe trip and after seeing this, we are like " this church can compete with any famous church in Europe" and it was in the backyard of our county and we were not aware of this. The cavernous interior is very well maintained and is spotlessly clean. The architecture, the carved wood, the Chandeliers, the stained glass windows, the marble Carvings, the Statues, ornate Doors, and the 14 Mosaics depicting the Stations of the Cross, were all so magnificent that it made our jaws drop. The Altar made of Italian Marble is stunning. It has the largest Pipe Organ which includes 9000 pipes, 54 stops, and is playable from two consoles.Perfect and exact example of French Gothic architecture in the Western Hemisphere. The Cathedral Basilica is well worth a visit.
I visited the Cathedral for the 49th annual Carol Sing. The church is beautifully decorated and the choir and orchestra do a fantastic job of bringing the season to life. The architecture, stained glass windows, and carved wooden panels that surrounds the inside of the cathedral are a sight to see.
A modern-day Cathedral that is stunning! We visited the cathedral on a day layover at Newark. The cathedral was fairly easy to navigate to and there is free and ample street parking, at least on the Wednesday that we visited. There is no charge for visiting the cathedral (although donations are appreciated); just sign in to guest book in the visitors lobby and you can do a self- guided tour. The cathedral is worth visiting for the stunning stained-glassed alone, but the architecture, sheer scale, and beautiful French Gothic structure are also making it a visit well-worth your time. We would have loved to attend a service, but our short visit made it impossible to do so. Im certain the pipe organ, which has over 9,000 pipes, would be glorious to hear!
loved the church, very beautiful.. from the facade to the inside to the altar and the blessed sacrament.. would love to hear mass here next time..
My husband I went there to take pictures in the garden and then see Easter mass. the church is a beautiful building and the mass was nice.Otherwise it was a good time. We went for the early mass at 8 and finished before the Spanish mass at 1000.
Second time Id ever been to the Cathedral in my life. Ive driven by it many more times than that, though and I am always marvelling at how beautiful it is! Definitely a place to stop at whether youre religious or not. Architecturally speaking, its gorgeous! There is so much detail in everything here, I could have spent hours photographing it! Dont know much about the masses that are held there, but Id love to go back just to see the sun come in through the stained glass windows!
One of the most beautiful cathedrals Ive ever seen, and Ive traveled all over Italy. They provide tours of the cathedral after noon church service on Sunday, but the most incredible experience attending the Christmas carol show with the choir. Ive included images from this past years show.
One of the most beautiful places Ive even been! Too bad it was closed. See on the website what time it will be open, before you go.
it is a wonderful and holy place. I have been there three times each seasons: spring, summer and winter. It took my vision when I came New Jersey,
I discovered this Beautifil Basilica on my way to Branch Brook Park to see cherry blossoming and was shocked by the beauty of the Cathedral made in French Gothic Revival style. The history of the construction is long - more than fifty years. Its a must to see the inside also. Basilica reminded me a lot of Nothe Dame de Paris tragedy due to lookalike style.
Stunning Basilica! I had no idea such a lovely structure existed in Newark until I happened upon it yesterday. I just had to go inside for a peek! I shouldve asked about photography. I didnt use a flash, but I hope its ok I took photos to share. Very impressive... built over a period of 55 years! It reminds me very much of Notre Dame in Paris, which Ive visited many times. Just gorgeous!
Beautiful and dramatic. Hard to miss as it ”pops" for the area its in. Intended to go to Branch Brook park for the Cherry Blossom festival but ended up spending more time here. Architectural marvel. Will visit again!
Beautiful place of worship. The Christmas Eve mass was just magical with the choir and service. We felt safe with the level of security in place. There were police and security personnel everywhere in the area: inside and outside the church.
