Parque De La Sal, Zipaquirá, Cundinamarca, Colombia, Jurado
Carved in a salt mine, this unique subterranean cathedral offers guided tours & a souvenir shop.
This place was great. It’s definitely worth the day trip to see it. It’s much bigger than I expected and it seems to expand with every turn once you get to the cathedral area. Great place to see.
Amazing Experience. Very informative and an experience like no other
This place is astonishing. Dont get me wrong I really liked it but the really down part was the journey to get there. Ive never seen roads in such a horrible state. Also they charge a good amount of money for each person and they should beautify the outdoors a little more. It looks like theres a horrible management team.
Amazing place to visit if you are in Bogotá. Take into account that is a round trip of >3 hours in private transportation (from the airport area). I recommend purchasing a tour or at least tickets in advanced via internet, and attending the guided tour where they explain the history of the mines.
Amazing experience to be shared with the family and friends. Give yourself enough time to walk the cathedral. 3hours min.
Simply marvelous. Impossible to miss when you visit Colombia.
Very unique cathedral located 600ft underground. If you go, take the tour - so much to learn. I paid for the highest package and did not regret it. Expect about 3hrs to complete the cathedral tour. If visiting the area, plan to get there at 8am so you can do all the activities.About 30 dollars allows you to rock climbing, cathedral tour, private experience as a miner, history movie, and tour of the town. A must if in bogota - paid $90 for a private driver from bogota and back.
Great experience. Foreigners expect to pay more.
Not worth your time or money…We missed the entrance and went on a small walk up the hill and it was NICER than the Salt Cathedral itself.Do not recommend. Please go visit some of the Colombians nature.
Not worth the money (17€ for tourists). Stations of the cross are all the same (only their names changeand the cathedral is nothing like on the photos. But the salt part is cool.
Amazing place to visit, we took the tour early in the morning and it wasn’t too crowded. It is a truly experience to live.Cons:The transport from Bogotá. There is no clear connections from Bogotá. No public transport to get there. By taxi or Uber takes around 2 hours and the drivers makes the most of this lack of public transport. Either the council or the Cathedral should set up a transport system to get there easier.Cons:The diesel combustion smoke while waiting the train to get out. You can’t barely breath while waiting, aside of the side effects of being exposed to this for a few minutes. They really should address this issue as it ruins the amazing experience of the Cathedral.
The place is fine and interesting but a little bit overrated.
"There is a beacon of light therefore there is a beacon of hope"This place is Heaven on Earth...
The first wonder of Columbia and definitely a place to visit when in bogota a very historic and spiritual place to visit.
Truly an amazing place, go on a weekday to enjoy the peacefulness and take nice pics. The video mapping happens every hour, try to seat at the front rows for a most immersive experience. Dont be afraid to explore the whole place. The waiting time to hop on the the train that takes you out can take a couple of hours, its frustrating. Most "attractions" at the end of the tour are just non sense tourist traps.
Wonderful experience to explore underground salt mine with amazing sculptures carved out of salt. Takes about 1 1/2 - 2 hours to complete adventure.
Didnt like this place. Overpriced for what it is. Pseudo-religious experience. Misleading advertising too, this is not a cathedral it is a salt mine. Why you need to fill it with the stations of the cross God only knows. If you want to see some real heritage go to San Agustin. Two stars cause its a nice town with scenic views.
No words to describe this incredible experience in my life. How people had the idea to build a cathedral underground.Almost in the end of the visit, start the business of selling everything related the cathedral that in my opinion worth.Second time in Colombia, first time at the capital Bogota , just 1h20m and I can say,YOU MUST TRY.
I visited the Salt Cathedral Christmastime of 2006.It has much improved since then. You can still see the industrial scars in the rock - very moody. But they have improved the lighting and the art displayed over time. The actual church part of the mine was more like a large chapel than a full cathedral, but passing through the dark underground mines felt a bit like touring a sepulchre : it put you in the mood to consider the afterlife. At that time they didnt have anyone singing Christmas songs, though the acoustics would probably be fantastic!
This place was amazing. One of the most beautiful sites around Bogota. A must see. I recommend a private guide and get there early before the crowd.
Amazing place! A lot of history, engineering, geography, geology, and much more.
A place you cant miss. Beautiful and quite impressive church built underground.
I thought itd just be a quick stop at a cave with some rough salt pillars and an altar. I was very wrong. The place is quite massive, and though we were generally trying to hurry through on our way elsewhere, we still spent 2 hours there.Theres wifi underground and you go in as groups with a Spanish tour guide... but we kind of just split off on our own because we couldnt understand it anyway and its much nicer away from the crowd and the loudspeaker. At 75 000 pesos per person it is one of the more expensive attractions in Colombia. That said, it is "Colombias #1 wonder" as we learned. I think theres extra tours you can do about the actual mines, and theres a whole park around that I think includes a museum, but we didnt do any of that.
Went there on a Wednesday, which was perfect as there werent too many people. They charge different prices for Colombians, around $7, and foreigners $13, for the basic tickets. The tour leaves every 15mins or so. The tour is in Spanish but they provide guided headphones in English as well. I actually wandered off on my own after 5 mins, which gave me time and space to do things on my own.The Catholic symbols and church are very enjoyable, even though Im nowhere near religious. After the Cathedral, you will enter the retail area. The Café 340 is worth stopping for a coffee and pastry. You probably want to skip actually buying an emerald here as they are well overpriced, like at any tourist attractions. However I do recommend going to the Desal Spa. Despite the price being higher than most places outside, it is still considerably cheaper than in USA or Europe.I paid $20 for a 20mins foot scrub and foot massage. Apart from getting to experience a real salt spa inside a salt mine, the setting/ambience was beautiful and the service was great, too. I will probably be back just for the spa alone, which I was told the entry fee will be about $4 if you booked a service at the spa. If you like spa, this is a must! Even if you dont, you will still enjoy the experience.Bottomline, you will spent aprx 2 hours here. Come early on a weekday. Charge your phone as you will be taking heaps of pix. For the sake of others, dont wear strong perfume as it is a confined space and eventhough it is pet friendly and they provide a trolley for your dog....a dog in my tour group barked for 5 mins straight.P.S. After the tour, stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant, cant remember the name but it has a big cow outside. The meat samlle platter is huge and tasty
Very nice and unique place. The cathedral itself is beautiful, and the walk to get there is impressive. Highly recommend taking the guided tour, you will learn a lot about the history of the Cathedral and mountain.Parking is easy, but be careful. If you are driving they will try to get you to park in the first parking lot you encounter going up the mountain, but that will make you have to walk up the mountain the entrance of the mine. If you keep going in your car you will find a parking lot much closer to the entrance. In terms of the packages you have a basic, middle and upper tiers. The basic gets you the entrance to the mine, a 15 minute movie, and access to the train tog etc out of the mountain if you do no want to go back up yourself to the exit. The middle tier adds access to the Tutankhamen museum (inside the mine), the museum at the base of the mountain and a tour of old Zipaquira. The higher tier adds some extreme sports, plus the miner’s path inside the mountain. We took the middle tier, but the tour of old town was not great (better to do it by yourself). The museums at the base of the mountain was closed by the time we came out, although our kid like The Tutankhamen museum (not great for adults). I was however left wanting to do the miner’s trail. Given this, I would suggest either the basic tíquet or the higher tier, you don’t get much extra for the money in the middle one.Overall a great experience. I had been to the old slat cathedral, and this is different, a bit more touristy once you walk in the corridors inside of the mountain outside of the cathedral (there are stores, a coffee place, spa, and other attractions all inside the mountain). I hope the keep it as is and don’t add more, all the store take some of the mystic out of this place).
There are three methods that you can choose for your journey. And the different price for foreigner.after entering the aisle.it will be so many crosses in here. There is a one story belong to every cross.on summary, this place is amazing and fun.
This is a one kind experience, if you are visiting Bogota and looking for a place in particular this is the one. Make sure to put on some comfortable sneakers cause its a long walk in a deep cave. 10/10
This is the third time that Ive been here but the first time in about 15 years and it sure has changed a lot. Its more commercial or touristy now, for lack of better terms. They practically have a shopping mall down there, which wasnt in the mine before. I probably shouldnt complain since I bought stuff in there, LoL. The "mine" part of it is still good and worth the trip though.
This salt cathedral is the most amazing spot so far in my Colombia travel. The tunnels and cross are just amazing. We are lucky to see a lightning show and a wedding ceremony. I wholeheartedly recommend this place for anyone visiting Colombia. They did change different prices for the local people and foreigners.
Absolutely breathtaking this is worth the trip. The magnitude of this undertaking cannot be explained or viewed in photos.
Dangerous diesel exhaust from people mover “train” to the surface. My group got headaches while waiting at the bottom of the diesel exhaust particulate filled cave. For a place that boasts the alleged health benefits of the salt on the body in the lungs it’s all fully invalidated by the carelessness of the diesel poisoning, a carcinogen, which causes lung cancer and has a positive association with bladder cancer. Most importantly is the staff that spends weeks and months inside the cave exposed to the horrible diesel exhaust fumes. Aside from that, cool hole! With the vast abundance of inexpensive local strata 6 labor may the “first great wonder of Colombia” serve as a memorial for all the souls it still claims daily.
We took a day trip out to Zipaquira to see the Salt Cathedral on a random Tuesday. It opens at 9am and we arrived around 8:45am. It wasnt open yet, but there is a plaza area that you can walk around and sit in until its open. You can rent an English audio guide from the ticket booths. You have to take a tour to go inside, but once youre inside, you can just wander off with your audio guide. Tours are in Spanish only. We waited to go in with the tour guide and then left to do our own exploring with the guide. To get through the entire mine with the audio guide it takes about 1.5 hours roughly. We opted to go for the basic ticket and not do any of the extra stuff. It was honestly very sufficient. The cathedral is truly amazing - I have no idea how people managed to carve all of these things out of a mine of salt!
Soooo worth it! I absolutely loved this place. Beautiful and very interesting. Took the guided tour and it was the best option. Its aprox a 2 hours tour and longer if you want to stay.
It was an experience, I recommend visiting it. It was different and a sight to see. Even of you are not religious, its something interesting. Worth the visit.
If you want to know what a magical-religious experience is you must go there, in town find the best food, the best place we had meet, is impressive
Definitely the best place I have ever been to in my entire life. It was something that I never seen it. If you are a gamer, you might feel like you are in a dungeon that you can get the final weapon or a place to upgrade your classes.
It’s a bit of a drive north of Bogotá. There are lots of different salt cathedrals. After the 4th or 5th we just started wandering around. I believe there is also an available tour of an actual salt mine which in hindsight I regret not inquiring about as I think that would have been interesting.
Truly unique but it’s not worth the time and money. We hired a driver to take us from bogota. With tragic it took over 2 hours. Then they charged 113,000 per person so it’s very overpriced. All you see are crosses of the same type and size, a few coloured LED- lights. Take the stairs down from the angel to the cathedral… it was beautiful took my mind off the 2 hour ride back.
What can I say about La Primera Maravilla de Colombia (Colombias first Marvelthat has not been said before? It is just as breathtaking and spectacular as the descriptions. It is truly a magnificent piece of architecture and engineering, and to hear the story of the miners was truly inspiring. This is a must do for anyone visiting Bogota.
The idea of an underground Cathedral, carved in the walls of a still working salt mine is almost out of a fairy tale. Attending mass was a whole new experience.Unfortunately, it was too crowded and with no supervision. People would remove their masks to take photos almost climbing on top of the crosses. Crowd control in times of covid should be a top priority not an afterthought.
Wow, so deeply felt, the heart in the craftsmanship was displayed so perfectly. Do not miss this on your trip to bogota, just one hour away in the quaint and historically rich town of Zipaquira, a town who fought so tirelessly for their independence. I didn’t want to leave!
A one hour drive from Bogota. The Salt Cathedral is breath taking at the least. Its hard to believe they built a Cathedral 600 feet below the surface. No need for a guided tour package like most vendors try to impose on you. Once you arrive youll be given a audio headset that will inform you and guide you along on the tour. Youll save yourself some money and time. You can expect to spend approx 2 hours. On your way back to Bogota stop at Andrés Carne de Res for another incredible adventure. The food is amazing and this is a must see.
Great experience. All the photos you can find don’t show the immense size of the place. Everyone is extremely polite and the tour is worth every penny. Bring money to buy unique souvenirs too.
What a unique place! I was so surprised! This place is huge! You have a lot of rooms, museums, small caves. You can wander for hours, learning about the history of the place, enjoying the mine and all the other attractions.
Wow, just wow. This trully is Colombias first wonder. This place is breathtaking, when I first entered I was a bit scared and felt kind of claustrophobic when the guide said we were going 590 ft (180 metersdown. But once you start seeing what the salt miners were able to do and how big this is you completely forget how deep underground you are. And the history is so interesting, I definitely recomed going to the VR show, its a fun way to lear all the salt mine history. If you are visiting Colombia dont miss the opportunity to vist this amazing wonder.
What an unexpected place. Its truly amazing to see the sheet scale of the salt mines in person, and then see what they have now done with them. Please not if coming from Bogota out driver told us traffic is always bad. We came from the AC Hotel and took 90 mins there and 120 mins back for a 24 mile total drive.
The trip was very simple. I didnt pay for the tour, but it was cool they had a electronic interpreter for english speakers. I paid for my tickets through Google. Although I think I paid more for my Colombian friends it was a lot simpler. As for the trip it was amazing, very gorgeous, not cold except for a few drafts of wind that I was not able to pinpoint. You dont have to be a Catholic to appreciate the time and effort it took to carve out this Cathedral. But if you are there was a mass while I was there. "Yes" the church is still being used.Ill let the photos speak for themselves. My favorite is called the Dome. Its suppose to represent the gateway to heaven. Second was just the view of the city below. And the cultural artifacts. And many more 😊😊
There are several options of purchase. Some include the church and museums, the most basic one is only the church. The whole trip is 2 km (1km going, 1 km back). Awesome sighting! If you go on a Tuesday it is empty! (Better for pictures). You can request headphones if you don’t want to carry the little speaker guide.
The cathedral is very interesting in its concept. Huge salt mine in deep cave. First rooms you enter are mysterious and main hall is magnificent. But market area really spoils all the atmosphere. Worth visiting if you are in Bogota.
This place is amazing, if you’re not claustrophobic tho! Amazing underground architecture, can even book ur private weeding party here, every single detail is amazing, even tho is a Cathedral, you dont really have to be religious to enjoy and visit the beauty of this place, what they did here is just priceless and you’ll be speechless with all the detailsThere is also a spa with salt based products, a mining option for few extra bucks, plenty of space to be thankful and pray if u religious, lots of art, food, and Salt based souvenirs also replica pf Colombian indigenous jewelry and more
