MoreHistorical beautiful building. The First Catholic Church of the new world after Christopher Columbus discovery...👍
MoreA holy place to worship, a beautiful blend of past and modern architecture and culture. The clergy allows inclusion, thats finding out countries of origin of the attendees and respecting appropiate dress code for the mass/ special ceremony. I always feel a warm welcome. Many thanks.
MoreThe most important building of The Historical City.
Beautiful church
The first cathedral of America in santo domingo Republica dominicana
amazing place 1st Cathedral in America🙏💥♥️🙋
I was lucky enough to not only visit this historic cathedral but I also was a groomsman in a wedding held at Cathedral de Las Americas. It is a very unique and special place. A place of both historical importance and religious significance in the Americas. I recommend reading up on the history of this location to really appreciate it.
MoreIt was well organized and good service. And it showed big respect for the history of this amazing place.
MoreI loved it here, the architecture is amazing.
On March 24, 2022, my friends and I went on a trip to Santo Domingo. It had been many years since we went to the Capital. We wanted to visit the Cathedral: Catedral Primada de America Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion. That is his official name. It was erected in 1512. It is well maintained and beautiful. Admission is $80 RD ($1.50 USA). Its exterior shows its Gothic style with Renaissance ornaments dating from 1514 to 1546.Inside are many artworks, for example a panel painting of the Altagracia Virgin from 1523.The Main Altar has a Baroque retable. Its worth the visit when youre in RD. You cant take pictures inside.
MoreWhat a church..was very bless to be able to attend mass..beautiful building
Great architecture. This cathedral is very popular for visitors
The First Cathedral built in the Americas... Extremely well preserved... Over 515 years old... I should have visited this Sanctuary in the 1980s... Thank God I got to see it for the first time in October 2018... Lets all make donations to make sure this historical Cathedral continues its restoration for eternity...✝️👼✝️
MoreGorgeous cathedral, and amazing history behind it too.
The first cathedral ever build in a new world! Must definitely see. Audio guide is highly recommended- tells a lot of interesting things
MoreBeautiful historic place, full of catholic memories and very well preserved.
The church is awesome. They have English and Spanish. You have to pay for the English sub. One of the most beautiful churches I have ever experienced. Church starts at 12:00 mid day and second session is at 5:00pm.
MoreThe impressive first church in the New World.
Beautiful. The history in this area is unbelievable. Absolutely amazing. This is the first church in the Americas.
MoreThis colonial building is the first Catholic cathedral in the entire American continent. It was inaugurated on February 12, 1546, with the name of the First Cathedral of the Indies. The cathedral features a mix of Gothic and Baroque architecture. Has solid golden limestone walls, an impressive vaulted ceiling and fourteen side chapels adorned with historical objects from colonial times. It was in this place that the remains of Christopher Columbus rested until they were eventually transferred to the Columbus Lighthouse made in his honor.
MoreVery nest. Too much order and excellent tourist guides.
If you are wearing short clothes, the staff will give you a small blanket to cover yourself before going into the church. I was wearing shorts they made me cover my legs to go inside the church. Be respectful if you dont want to cover it, dont go in, then dont be a Karen.
MoreThis is the first church to be built in the Americas. The pictures are self explanatory
MoreExcellent conditions! Is a historical building very well preserved! It Worth the visit!
MoreExcellent Mas Services are held here for those interested in the Catholic religion. The singing voices of the choir during Mas are so inspiring and spiritual that your experience is no less than Holy and breathtaking.
MoreExperience of a lifetime. The first christian and catholic church in the americas. absolutely amazing. I was able to see this church with a tour of Santo Domingo. Highly recommend the city tour and you must visit here.
MoreThe first and the oldest cathedral of Americas is the "Santa Maria la Menor Catedral" in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. A robust structure seen from the outside, but a church built with magnificent graceful columns inside, beautiful colored windows, huge interior spaces.
MoreOne of the top tourist attractions in Santo Domingo. You can pick up an electronic tour guide in Spanish or English. An old Cathedral with some interesting history behind it, but nothing close to what you would see in Europe. A swarm of street sellers waiting for you at the exit, about 1/3 of their asking price is what you should pay if you decide to buy anything.
MoreWe love Bear Paw, such a great camp. We stayed with 5 troops all had a great time.
MoreBeautiful architecture and well preserved. You receive headphones with an audio guide that helps to understand the paintings and exhibits. You have to dress modestly to gain entrance. They offer wraps for free to cover up in case you are wearing a tank top
MoreA sight to not miss out on, beautiful historic place. Very well-kept and it feels surreal to think it has been here since the early 1500s. Entrance was free.
MoreA gothic masterpiece in the heart of the colonial zone, an eternal spot of christianity in the Caribbean, the first ever in the west world, may it serve as a beacon for those who seek a place for prayer and salvation.
MoreIs so peaceful and beautiful
It is the first cathedral in America finished in 1512
The first Catholic Church in the new world! A must see along with the first courthouse, first street, first bar, etc, etc. Especially enjoyed living in the old city during the 500 anniversary of Columbiss discovery. Pope John Pauls visit that year was my highlight!
MoreSuch an impressive site. This was the oldest cathedral constructed in the Americas. Note that they require guests to cover up inside. Consider bringing a shawl or wear long sleeves/ pants. Its much cooler inside. Be sure to see the annexes in the back with old paintings and tombs.
MoreBeautiful Catholic Church in the middle of Santo Domingo. Couldnt have asked for a better way to end our sight seeing tour here. Loved learning about this historic, old, cathedral.
MoreQuite remarkable place, not a big cathedral yet very well preserved.
Small cathedral, but beautiful architecture. The headset guide is nothing.
Know to many in the Caribbean as the first build church in the new world. This historical wonder is not only a feast for the eyes but all senses. Made with limestone blocks, wood, stain glass to name a few architectural materials. The tour was lovely.....ps the bodies under the church was kinda creep but if you didnt take the tour you would never know.
MoreVery beautiful, was great to have headphones and audio player to be informed as you walked through. The history was amazing to learn, highly recommend anyone to visit this beautiful place.
MoreWe stayed in the hotel conde de Peñalba just on the other side of Columbus park and it wasn’t until one of our last days of our stay that I found that this was the very first cathedral in America. I made sure to take some time here in the morning before my flight around noon. I’d never expect to find what I did inside. I felt like I was in Europe.
MoreThis is the oldest church in the New World and is stunningly beautiful. It is open to tourists 6 days a week. If you show up on a Sunday, you can still visit during Mass.
MoreOldest standing cathedral in the New World. The sensation of standing in a sacred space with that much history is amazing. The gothic ceiling is beautiful. Cover shoulders and knees for respect before entering.
MoreWe stopped here as a part of our Santo Domingo Day Trip excursion, which included the audio tour. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the church itself as well as the architecture and design.Ladies must cover their shoulders and knees. If you forget, theyll provide you with a piece of fabric before letting you inside. Men must remove their hats.
MoreIt looks incredible from the outside so I went in with high hopes but its wasnt anything special inside. I guess after visiting cathedrals in Europe, its almost impossible to like anything else. But definitely worth it for about one dollar entry fee.
MoreCathedral is small, but has things to see. Is free for Dominican Republic residents with an ID. I learned that they open the crypt for the public during August. Overall, is not super exciting, but recommend if you are into history and have 15 mins to spare.
MoreIve been here a couple of times. Its a beautiful cathedral. Its the oldest standing cathedral in the Western Hemisphere built in the Spanish Colonial times. The architecture is great inside. There are little areas on the side with paintings, statues, carvings mostly in Latin. If you are in Santo Domingo, go visit this place. This whole street its on has a lot of great sites to see and shops.
MoreArchitecture like no other, great tour at cheap cost. If you are a fan of history, you should definitely visit this place.
