Piazza Cappuccini, 1, 90129 Palermo PA, Italy, Palermo
Home to 8000 corpses dating from the 16th century to 1920, dressed & divided into categories.
A very unique experience and a must do when in Palermo. You can finish this pretty quickly, about 30 mins. Getting there is very difficult as public transport is not the easiest to navigate. Its probably best to take the bus to and from. But be aware that the catacombs close at 12:30 and I believe it reopens a little later on.
Creepy, somber and very interesting. No pics are allowed. Cheap to get in: 3 Euros.
Definitely worth visiting but its not for very sensitive people as there are a lot of dead bodies preserved in different stages of decomposition. The entry ticket is cheap and there was no queue. Its worth noting that due to the nature of the museum and to show respect, its not allowed to take pictures inside.I would say its a must see in Palermo and it does leave a lasting impression.
Cheap entry and the queue went very quickly. Dont go if you dont want to see a bunch of dead people hanging on walls.
I really enjoy it! Its a bunch of skulls, really exposed, some are very impressive, there are children too... You cant take pictures inside by the way
Wish there was more explanation
Strange place and experience. It might be interesting, but on the other hand, an idea to be an exhibit after the death doesnt seem too attractive.
Rather weird experience, not sure how to score it. The price was reasonable. Not my kind of entertainment but one in a lifetime experience.
A must in Palermo. Costs only €3 to enter and it’s totally worth it. Risky for nightmares. Not allowed to take photos inside because it’s a sacred place.
Very harrowing and somber atmosphere. Beware that you may get some people laughing and taking photos (even though they’re not allowed!).
Being a cemetery no pics or video allowed, yet it will remain impressed in your heart. Moving place, life is a gift, and therein you can feel the real sense of this words. Not to be missed. No foto o video, essendo un cimitero. Si tocca il senso di essere vivi, nel profondo. Immancabile.
Is a must in Palermo totally recommend just for respect I didnt take pictures inside.
Great experience. A bit creepy but I liked it a lot. Very different from what Im used to see.
Very grim place to be perfectly honest even though I am happy to have gone. My girlfriend had to leave after a few minutes as it wasnt for her. The full bodys are creepy.
Gruelsome place, not really a tourist spot in Palermo . We should stick to "rest in peace " Dont Go!
Probably one of the most chilling extraordinary place Ive ever visited. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!!! Thoroughly recommended!
Interesting place but confronting. Please respect the no photos or video rule, the dignity of these people is worth more than likes on your social media
Very interesting place, and quite different than all other catacombs Ive seen before. Definitely worth a visit.
Interesting, grisly, not quite sure how I feel about paying to gawk at disintegrating corpses.
I was a very interesting place, but, unfortunately, you can’t take photos.
Its a weird set up. At best tacky and at worst almost disrespectful. Nothing much offered in the way of info. Wouldnt recommend
Freaking beautiful, if you dont have a problem from seeing full dead people. The skeletons of the monks are very well preserved. No photos or videos are allowed inside the catacombs.
Well, do not know how to describe this place. Yeah, lost appetite for some time. Ok, maybe its unique, but, its rows and rows of dead people. It is not scarry, but think twice, if you plan to go with children...
Total waste of time. Even if they are real which I dont believe they are as you can literally touch them and potentially contaminate them. They look like cheap Halloween relics.
At first I thought it would be not a pleasant place to visit but after a while, my sister insisted to go and it was such a wonderful experience. We read about the history of it and how beautiful is the work done behind it. I felt much more respect for the death as always had. "It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live" - Marcus Aurelius
Amazing Place , so emotional and full of history. One of the biggest cemetery of the world. If you go to Palermo you need to visit It!
Very special unique museum.Hundreds of dead mummified bodies, some are almost 300 years old .Amazing
This is a crazy stop in Palermo, almost the worthiest place to be. Besides churchs and monuments, there is a place to the dead, the real embalmed ones. Each corpse has a story to tell but there are ones who shine among the others, particularly the first dead on the catacomb, and the little last one.So, Google cant upload fotos from there, take pictures or video are forbidden. When were ready to enter, gave the tickets to the girl in the entrance and she said to us "enjoy". I thought in that moment, who would enjoy seeing dead corpses embalmed hanging on the walls with clothes.Well, me. And probably you if u go there. This is us.
A must visit. Could be better presented, but it is Sicilly and the place greatly fits the whole.
Very interesting visit, informative and helpful in putting things in the right perspective. Clearly, a memento mori from the hundreds of people looking down on you from their hooks ("what you are I once was, what I am you will be"that you have to be ready to stomach. Parking can be a challenge.
Eight thousand dead mummies might not be your idea of a good time, but this is fascinating, history come to life....or death.
This was a great experience, very insightful. It’s 3€ per person to enter, you buy the tickets as you enter. There was no dresscode and no masks needed in July 2022.
it was a strange experience, i felt i was too close to the remainings (with no protection like a glass wall or anything); there could be kore care for both the tombs and the visitors; overall, an interesting spiritual experience.
Worth to visit during your stay in Palermo. Part of history based on the exibit of mummification of corpse and skeletons of Palermos great citizens.
Definitely a must. Also, lots of group tours so it gets easily crowded but it works well anyway.I would also recommend to walk the 2km from the main city center to get a glimpse of the real Palermo.
Cool place, little creepy, but very interesting.Lovely man on the entrance
An interesting experience, a lot of death bodies is here, adults and childrens also to. The tax for entrance is 3 euro/person. Its close between 12:30 and 15:00. Must see in Palermo!
A must place to visit in Palermo, after which you may take into consideration that our life is short and we will look same as those bodies after our end of journey on earth. So lets be thankful for our life, present and good quality time spent with family/friends!
Is really recommended to see this mystical and historical place.
Fascinating place, worth the walk over and nice temp inside too. Pay with cash (€3 per personbut they let us in for less as we had too few coins.
Its finally opened. There is not a lot of people if come at 9 am upon opening... highly recommended to buy a book before entrance because without special interest you xan easily get bored. Although fir those who understands the matter few hours there will be happy time without any additional tools.Photo is forbidden due to preservation issues but actually nobody watch the rules strictly.
My husband and I were confused by different info regarding whether or not this place is open so we went there today. We were so hoping it was open Unfortunately it is not open yet. ☹️ The gentleman at the office stated they are hoping next month it will be open. So maybe sometime before summer.
Personally not my favourite activity to check skulls and dead bodies, however quite interesting stories through the death bodies
A must go if youre in Palermo and have 1 hour to spare. Very interesting and also spooky .You can visit everything in under 30min. Entrance is 3 euros which is very cheap in my opinion for such an unique place .You cannot take photos inside , but you can Google the photos to have an idea .Again, a definitely must go
It was just something that stunned me. Didnt expect to see all those bodies. Some with skin and hair still on them even after so long of a time period. And then seeing Rosalia Lombardo as well preserved as she was after a century has passed is amazing.
Creepy place to visit, but I think it is a must see in Palermo if you are into history and cultural heritage. You are not allowed to take pictures inside. It is a pity we did not have a guide that could speak to you about what happened there. But we did some research on Google on our own while inside.
Not so interesting, a lot of dead people hanged on the wall. Not so creepy, an interesting way to take 3 euro per person to see the remains of people who live around 1600-1800.
A very unique place going back hundreds of years. Its quite scary and all the bodies are real. Mummified bodies from babies to old age and has the smell of decay, worth going to see
Something different if you like those sort of things. Worth to see for sure. You can literary feel that you are moving back time. It could be little bit overwhelming if you are more sensitive but I recommend it.
Visiting the catacombs is certainly interesting - but not everyone is like that. It is strange to see so many corpses in such a small space. There are adults, children, families ... Lying or hanging figures in various stages of "decomposition". Maybe scary, maybe repulsive - but also fascinating. It is a pity that the main "attractions" - little Rosalia - is in a glass coffin in which there is hardly visible. We were here in June - outside the main tourist season - and the catacombs were about five people besides us. Parking directly in front of the monastery were no problems, we left the car there all day
