501 Calle Norzagaray, San Juan, 00901, Puerto Rico, San Juan
Monumental 16th-century Spanish fortification atop cliffside promontory, cannons pointing seaward.
Great fort! With lots of history covering a large area. However if you have knee problems or hips you might want to stick to the upper level and mid level! At ten dollars a person, which covers entrance to both forts, is a decent price! And if you’re not careful you could learn something new! Lol
We walked trough the paseo de la princesa all the way to castle. entrance fee is 10$ and you can visit this castle and San Felipe if you save your recipe. San Felipe had an amazing view of the ocean side definitely breathe taking we came as soon as they opened at 9am and it was not crowded at all. They had an small give shop, they where some parts that where under construction but it did not interfere with our visit some parts where not well maintained dirty but overall good place
The grounds are beautiful and it is interesting to learn the history of this location and of San Juan/ PR as a whole. We went on a Thursday after first visiting Castillo San Cristobal. We paid $10 at Cristobal and showed our receipt to get in for free at Morro. Well worth it!
Always a good historic experience! Bring comfortable shoes and a small towel 2 help if prone to sweating😅. Good workout for thighs and calves!!It was raining a bit and they were closing soon so they did not charge us an entrance fee.
El Morro is an absolutely stunning example of Spanish colonial fortifications made even more picturesque by its location on the point of land that gives it its name. Just walking up to it is breathtakingly gorgeous with the expansive green lawn that leads up to its gates and the Santa Maria cemetery towards the seashore on one side. Many iguanas make the lawn and the forts battlements home and make for an interesting distraction as you saunter up the hill. Past the dry moat and main entrance youll enter the courtyard where theres a gift shop and different paths branch off to various areas of the fort - definitely budget at least an hour or two here at El Morro if you want to see all the nooks and crannies as the fort is built with several levels. Numerous exhibits about the history and life in the fort will also soak up your time in addition to simply lingering to take in the amazing views from the seaward side of the structure. After finally leaving, dont be surprised if you cant resist taking one last look at this amazing place as you make your way back to Viejo San Juan.
Beautiful historic place that you must visit while in San Juan! The views are breathtaking and you can take great photos here. Entrance is $10 per person to both castles.
A great value & experience at just $10 per person. The castillo is very large and theres plenty to walk through but for those who have difficulty walking, one can explore at their own pace. Our visit sure was very pleasant and we learned more about Puerto Rican history.
Wow! AMAZING place to visit in San Juan, full of history and culture. Very interactive exhibits and well kept facilities. I learnt so much about the history of Puerto Rico visiting this site, it was really an amazing visit. The views were amazing as well. Highly recommended.
Our family only had a day in Puerto Rico and we were so glad to visit the fort for a couple hours and learn so much about its history and the beautiful island. The grounds are very well kept and maintained.
I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed this site. It is listed as $7.00 per adult, but disabled veterans and National Park pass holders get free entry. This place is steeped in history and it takes at least an hour to see everything. In addition to the history, the massive fortifications are unbelievable. I am sure we could not replicate them today, at any price. I could not help but think about the cost it took for those who built it, or be inspired by what humans can achieve. In addition to the history and the impressive fortifications is the unbelievable views. All and all I recommend setting a side a day to spend in this historic section of San Juan.
Absolutely beautiful and amazing experience. Everything is well opened and there is plenty of rooms/places to visit In the castle where it is not to crowded. I highly recommend that you stop by and visit this castle. $10 a ticket and you get to use the pass for 24 hours so you have enough time to visit both castles! You cant beat it! Amazing!!!
Amazing experience at this place. Cost to enter is $10 and cash is not accepted.Well preserved grounds and many floors to explore with views and information throughout.Definitely do not miss on visit to old San Juan.
Such a great place to visit and learn about. Seeing the structure first hand and imagining what it was like then for Puerto Ricans my family to fight various different countries and defend the waters of the Carribean. Truly a blessing to see this place and see and read apart of my families roots.
Amazing views. A great place to visit, learn some history, fly a kite, explore. You can see soldiers quarters, rooms political dissidents were locked up in,cannons, cannon balls, stand on balconies overlooking the water.Plenty of clean bathrooms.Lots of walking. Wasnt too pricey and admission is good for 2 days of visits.
Beautiful spot with ocean view, love to go and fly kite! Locate in Old San Juan, beautiful scene, there is a Morro Trail behind the castle that connect to Paseo Las Princesa, the trail is gorgeous and it is free, no need to enter in castle. Excellent to enjoy view and relax!!
Its quite a walk. Have comfortable walking shoes, sun block, hat and water. Excellent views. One of the best views is where you would least expect it...from the rest room.
Parking is probably going to be the hardest thing you’ve had to do. Impossible to find and the streets are super narrow but once you get in, it’s actually pretty nice. Lots of levels to explore and great views of the beach. Even the bathroom has really nice “windows” to show you the sea outside. Lots of nice history tidbits inside although they could’ve done stuff to differentiate some areas and rooms from others every room or display looked almost identical.
Highly recommend two to four hours for this tour. Audio tour available and adds great value. Entry into both parks is allowed with one purchase. Closes at 4 PM. Be on the look out for iguanas and lizards.
Really enjoyed this old fortress. It has a lot of levels to explore, which I think kids would really like. Although, there are also a lot of steep spots so be careful. Here you will have great views of old San Juan and the Caribbean Sea. Make sure to wear sunscreen. The walk up to here is around a half mile from the town and fully exposed to the elements.
Fantastic experience. The ocean breeze was amazing there is a decent walk to get to the fort. The National Park charges $10 per adult and kids get in free. The gift shop was clutch with Gatorade and water for a fee of course. If you are in the area and have any interest in history this is a must see.
Everytime I come to this place the smell tells me I am home. Its an old fort in the corner of El Viejo San Juan from the top you can see Isla de Cabra and just the view of the ocean is breathtaking. The story in this walls is priceless some places have been fixed to stop the wear of time but the outside and most the insidenisnintact. I love taking pictures from the top of the stairs and overviews the ocean with that deep blue color.....a must ace to visit when in PR.
Larger than life beautiful. The combination of history and the rich cultural environment make this an ideal place; those that love history and outdoor areas will adore this. Just make sure you were comfortable shoes, as there is alot to see.
You will have to pay $10 to enjoy every inch of the exhibit. We recommend getting there earlier than the opening because parking is scarce.
Must visit if you are in San Juan. There is a good trail to walk and get some breathtaking views of the ocean. Its a wonderful place to take some pictures and learn some history. There are some good restaurants nearby as well.
Walking through this for was like walking through history itself. The views are absolutely memorizing and breathtaking. The minor $10 fee to enter was well worth it. There is no air conditioning in here but the breeze is very cool so it wasnt incredibly hot. There are bathrooms and a water fountains for use once youre inside also.
Amazing place with so much history. Well maintained. $10 per adult, or free with your US National Park Annual Pass.I walked around myself and read what was posted. They do have self guided audio tours.Beautiful views of the bay. Awesome photos opportunities. I would recommend this as a stop
Your visit to San Juan isn’t complete without a visit to this place! This for is the older one and is gorgeous! With a light house and 4 to 5 levels deep - it offers gorgeous views of the bar and the Caribbean waters!! Checkout the watch towers, kitchens, lighthouse and more! They’ve 10$ entrance fee (if you don’t have your annual park pass). You can use the same ticket for visiting the other castle too, albeit within 24 hours.A huge shout out to the National Parks Service for their preservation efforts here! 😊
Prepare to climb many stairs. It is really cool seeing a castle that is so old, there are some great views of the ocean. Make sure to wear good and comfortable shoes. Do NOT park in any zone that is yellow or any areas that are clearly marked, make sure you car is fully parked in parking eligible space.
Amazing place. Something you would only think you see in a movie. So much history is here you could spend all day and more looking around. It cost money to get in and BE SURE to be ready to walk... a lot in the heat. Pro Tip! Get the hell out of there before the cruise ships dock and release the hordes.
A very fascinating piece of history to visit. $10 a person under 16. Love ready the history about it while we were in there. Bring comfy shoes, got blisters with flip flops while walking up and down on a hot day. Lots of lizards on the outside walls that are cool to see. Spent a good hour there with myself and 5 teens.
It is an easy castle to get around in. Has a lot of history and well worth your time. Also has some excellent views from the different tourers. Well worth the time and money.
This place is beautiful! We visited on a Sunday and it was not too crowded. Spent more time than expected so make sure you plan at least a whole day to see all of Old San Juan. Please note that all the stairs/ramps are original. there are ramps to the upper levels but not the lower levels, use caution if you are someone with mobility challenges.
A must see when visiting Old San Juan for the first time. Nice views of the bay from the top of the fort. After visiting the fort, would recommending walking along the coastline that surrounds it. Youll likely see a lot of cats.
This is a unique national Park service site featuring a 16th century Castle that was built by the Spanish to protect San Juan harbor from entry by enemy or other undesired ships. Largely built with slave labor, it really stretches your mind to think about the amount of work it took to build, by hand the two castles and all the rest of the fortifications on the peninsula that makes up Old San Juan. The castle is definitely worth a visit along with its counterpart on the other end of the peninsula. The entry fee is $10 per adult, and if you save your receipt youll get into both castles with one charge. Or do what we did and bring your America the beautiful pass and get in for free.
If you in Old San Juan stop by and see the castle. We did a walking tour and it was great to learn the history of the place. I recommend going at sunset for the spectacular views!
Amazing place, very big and takes time for walking all the castle. Very cultural and you can see an old graveyard in front of the sea. Like it a lot and the view is amazing. Something they should improve is the smell of pee in some parts. You don’t have to pay for enter the outsides.
Beautiful Scenery. A Wonderful place to explore and take pictures while learning about the history of El Morro. Walking distance from many amazing local restaurants for a pleasant lunch/dinner stop on the outing. Highly recommend stopping by when in Old San Juan!
This fort is so gorgeous. Its better than San Cristobal, but admission to one gets you into both. I recommend going to San Cristobal first, like we did, to thoroughly enjoy both. Lots of walks in this fort so dress accordingly. Definitely worth seeing this National park.
The UNESCO World Heritage site in Old San Juan is an amazing place to visit. Filled with tourists and locals , the place has wonderful vibes and a picturesque view of the bay. The site is currently closed due to the pandemic but has a number of spots on the fort wall overlooking the sea/ bay and the view is breath-taking.
A must go place if you visit Puerto Rico, a beautiful and historical castle to experience, I mean, just beautiful. I worried about parking when I planned but eventually it was not bad at all. Even if you cannot find the closest parking spot, some walking to the castle is pretty pleasant and enjoyable, so no worry just go.
Been wanting to come here since I was a kid! It has breathtaking views of the island and you learn about the history of what took place there centuries ago! I do recommend to not wear dresses/skirts because it is VERY windy since you’re right on the water when you’re there. Also, when you pay the admission fee ($10you get to visit the castle, “Castillo de San Cristóbal”, for free, which is about a 15-20 minute walk up the road. I’ll be coming back to this place when I visit PR again!
Spend a day in old San Juan, doing the covid time here still is unbelievable busy and so many people dont wear mask. But the view is absolutely beautiful, very enjoyed the sunshine, fresh breeze from the ocean.
Wonderful place to visit. Lots of history about the island. The staff at the location were all very helpful as well. Has a great little store inside that offers a lot of nice gifts.
A must do in San Juan. Be prepared to walk to experience this amazing place. It’s impressive. We arrived late and were actually blessed to be able to go in if only for 40 minutes. It’s beautiful. Staff was courteous and friendly. With all the covid restrictions it was hard wearing a mask and not being able to breath in the beauty this place had to offer. It was actually refreshing to see families just sitting in the lawn flying kites. The sites from above, even the gravesites are beautiful site of how things were. We could have spent the entire day there.
We were only in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a few hours on a cruise ship stop. We did a tour and saw the castle from a little distance and were able to get a few pictures. Would have loved to take the tour.
A $10 entry fee was totally worth this 1.5 hr trip back in time!! The complete size and enormity of this ancient site alone is breathtaking. From the top, you can see the blue ocean, colorful architecture, cliffs, mountains, and hotels dot the landscape.
A beautiful and historically significant spot that you absolutely must take the time to visit while exploring San Juan. With 500 years of history, theres a lot to see and learn here. Theres also a lot of walking, lots of stairs and elevation change, so make sure to wear good shoes. Theres a guided audio tour available at an extra cost as well as a small gift shop. Also make sure to keep an eye out for iguanas. They love to hang out all over the outer walls!
Lots of walking, so wear good shoes. You will need your mask inside. It’s a National park location, so free for military or American the beautiful pass holders. It’s got very scenic views. You will climb up and down a knot of you want to see everything. It was the only touristy area we went to, but it was nice.
The fort is really super interesting. They do a fantastic job of giving cool historical snippets of information as you walk around and explore. Even if you can’t do the stairs due to a handicap, the floor you walk in on is worth visiting. It contains a bunch of rooms and information and views of the ocean and coast.
Absolutely beautiful. Great place to walk around and explore. There is a lots to do without paying. The views are also spectacular. The nearby .9 mile trail is a must - but make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen.
