Calle 40 Local 204 X 41, Centro, 97780 Valladolid, Yuc., Mexico, Izamal
Intimate museum in a private home offering a colorful collection of Mexican folk art & tours.
Really recommend this place, it is crammed full of art from brilliant artisans and has a really genuine homely feel. Miguel was an incredible guide, extremely knowledgeable and friendly and a credit to the whole project.
Amazing collection of Mexican art. This is not a museum, it’s a private collection but with guides who really know their stuff. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in town
If youre visiting Valladolid, make sure to go to this place! It has one of the most interesting collections of Mexican art, combined with a very professional tour. Its a gem in the city of Valladolid, and a place not to miss!
Wow what an amazing place! An absolute hidden gem. Half museum half private house the enormous collection of Mexican art is just spectacular. If you are in Valladolid dont miss it!
We had an excellent tour from David, who was very friendly and knowledgeable of the unique, inspiring art. They say the money from the tours goes to local charities, which is great, but I didnt hear anything about what the rich owners have directly donated to contribute to these causes.
Tour nice but a bit short, you cannot ask all the questions you wanna. But definitely worth a visit. You can also go multiple times as every time its a bit different.
Fascinating private collection of Mexican folk art; many pieces were commissioned by the owners. Our guide was funny and knew a lot about the collection. Tours are available in both English and Spanish, approximately five times a day. Requested donation to local charities. Definitely worth the visit!
This was by far the most interesting place I have visited in Valladolid! Its a (hugeprivate collection of Mexican folk art, decorating a beautiful mansion, which you tour with a very knowledgeable guide. They seem to do tours here on the hour between 10am and 3pm, not sure about the frequency though. The suggested donation of 100 pesos is well worth it for the experience, and in addition you get to help local charities.
Great tour. Amazing art! We were on the 1:00 tour, yes you need reservations. I think I need to go back at least 20 times to take it all in
Amazing experience! Very knowledgeable guide, very special pieces of art, wonderful house!
A very worth while place to visit in Valladolid. It is a private home open to the public and packed with artisanal works from all over Mexico.
A must in Valladolid. Beautiful art collection and a nice guide. We even met the owners of the hacienda.
Excellent private collection of Mexican folk art, all proceeds go to local charities and toward upkeep of the museum.
Very kitsch "museum", aggressive "tour guide" and mandatory "voluntary" donation. Dont come here if you want to experience Mexican art. Go to the Frida house in Mexico city instead. This was embarrassing for all involved.
white saviour complex disguised as an art house. Weird vibe. Mandatory "donation". Dont expect to get any information on the art. It seems all about the owners.
Great experience! They do tours at 10am so be there on time. I think there might be more tours but I’m not sure how exactly it works. The tour lasts about 1 hour and is walking around somebody’s house with loads and loads of Mexican art and souvenirs. It really is worth it!
Whether you enjoy art or not, this is a great experience to learn not only the art history of the Yucatán and nearby regions but also general history of these areas all while getting to walk around a spectacular home! Really love the fact that all donations go to local charities in the community as well. A must visit! They have a few tours that run throughout the day and take about an hour to complete.
An amazing opportunity to view a private residence in the middle of the city with a ton of Mexican art. Best of all, the donations you give at the end of 100% to local charities! The tour guide Miguel was phenomenal! We got there right at 10am and the tour started within 5 minutes after! I highly recommend you visit here! Its well worth it, and they are doing great things for the local community.
An incredible collection of Mexican art in an insanely beautiful private house. Due to the pandemic, they offer tours throughout the day for small groups - I happened to get one all to myself. The guide speaks Spanish and English fluently, as well as a good amount of French and some German, Italian and Portuguese, and can tell you about Mexican culture in general as well as about the individual art pieces to be seen. The tour even included a personal greeting to the very charming owners of the house. Their is no entry fee, but you donate at the end of the tour; the money is being given to charity causes. This visit was the highlight of my Valladolid tour, highly recommend it!
The variety of contemporary Mexican folk art is AMAZING. And the setting is incredible too. It is so with a stop if you are visiting Chichén itzá. So glad we toured. As of today, the open hours in Google are incorrect.
Go! The home is beautiful and the collection is stunning. There is so much to see and the guide was able to highlight special pieces, explain the origin, and has a true passion.
Excellent collection, wonderful guide. This private collection was the highlight in Villadolid. The donations made from the tour benefit local charities. So much to see everywhere you look. Thanks to the owners for allowing visitors.
Great house museum, recently re-opened (Dec. 2020for very small guided tours of up to 4 people. Covid precautions are in place so everyone stays safe. Amazing collection of Mexican folk art, the owners have great taste and its really awesome they use their passion (collectingto raise money for local charities. Our guide, David, was excellent – took his time with us (1.5 hoursand was an extreme pleasure. Go visit!
We visited December 2020- they are currently open for guided tours. We had a very small group for our tour, so we were able to ask plenty of questions to our guide, David. The $5 USD entry fee goes towards local charities, which is well-worth the ~1.5 hour tour. PLENTY to see, very relaxed atmosphere.
Really cool house decorated with TONS of Mexican folk art. Loved seeing museum-quality art in an actual home, as opposed to a sterile museum. Come around 10am for the tour. Lasts about 30 min and costs 100 pesos or $5 USD, all donated to local charities. Well worth a stop.
A must see in Valladolid! Its a private house hosting a very interesting collection of Mexican contemporary art.Donations are used to support local charities.
Wonderful private museum “House” in Valladolid. Amazing that the owners are willing to share their collection of Mexican art with the public. The only ask is for a small contribution to meet the expenses for the guided tours....amount equivalent to $5.00 US. Collection is set in many house venues including kitchen, dining, courtyard, bedroom suites, bars, and pools. Highly recommended just for the social and historical perspective education from the works. Tour guides are very well versed in all aspects of the collection.d tours.
Private residence full of Mexican Art, on the weird side but very interesting. Very affordable, takes about 1.5 hours to go by on a guided tour available in English. Last tour starts at 1 so go early.
So many things to look at makes me want to collect Mexican folk art too but then I would be spending all my time keeping them clean from the dust! So glad these folk art pieces are available to look at and enjoy. Feels like an indulgence of eye candy.
This is like an "open house" to see the home of a couple who have spent half a lifetime acquiring Mexicana. You can see from the pictures what some of it will be like. But it is truly interesting, with lots of colourful, quirky and often crazy stuff. Well worth a visit if you are in town. The (optionaldonation goes to charity.
Such an amazing collection of wonderful Mexican Folk Art as you are ever likely to see! All collected over many years by an American couple and beautifully displayed throughout their wonderful home. Definitely worth a visit!
Really cool house with lots of Mexican folk art. I love that some of the rooms are dedicated to folk art from certain areas/cultures. You really get to see the differences between the styles that way. Its also great that all proceeds/donations go to local charities.Make sure to take note of the tour times and get there exactly on time. They are very punctual. We got there 10 minutes early and were told to come back in 10 minutes. The other couple that toured it with us showed up late and were just added onto our tour, so they missed out on a couple of rooms.
Our guide (Davidwas amazing! He spoke English really well (along with a significant amount of french), made jokes and was incredibly knowledgeable about the art works. He was great at explaining the significance of the art and how it related to Mexican beliefs and traditions. It was really cool to see the art as it was originally intended and the house is gorgeous. David also suggested other sites to see in the area. Considering the only cost is a donation that goes to dealing with local issues, I was very impressed. 100% would recommend (be aware it takes a little over an hour to really see the house)
Worth seeing if you like traditional folk art, Mexican art or architecture. Its an amazing place. The guide made several errors, but probably because the owners dont know the details. They are collectors, just buying whatever they like and not always where the art comes from. Unfortunately, you have to tour in a group (too large for my tasteand are rushed through. But must give kudos to owners for making their private home open to the public daily and donating the money to good causes. Worth seeing more than once to get a better look at stuff and hear different presentations of the guides.
A must-do in Valladolid! A beautiful home converted into a museum with an incredible collection of Mexican folk art. I wish we could have spent more time- so much to see.
Fantastic place and must see in Valladolid. The price of admission of 100 pesos is given to local charities. This incredible house belongs to American expats who are avid art collectors. The house itself is amazing and there is more art than you can possibly see in one visit. Our guide was wonderful and spoke fluent English. He gave us lots of information and answered all our questions. Do not miss a visit to this incredible house/.museum.
Casa de los Venados ---- AMAZING home! If you love Mexican Folk Art - this home / Museum is definitely worth the trip.while visiting Valladolid. Its a Must See!! A beautiful display of lovingly collected Mexican folk art. Tours daily @ 10am are free but a $5 donation top support the local community is suggested -The guides Miguel and David were friendly and very informative. Check out the dining room -- beautiful hand painted chairs of famous Mexicans.
I love casa de los Venados. Its a great reminder that local crafts are more than just simple tourist souvenirs. The house is beautifully decorated with them. The guides are extremely kind and welcoming. There is no cost to enter but you can leave a tip that goes to donations. I highly recommend it to anybody passing by Valladolid.
Wow. A beautiful display of lovingly collected Mexican folk art. The fact that its a private collection, in a home which is still occupied by the owners, makes it all the more impressive. The colonial mansion is stunningly restored and would be worth a tour of its own. Highly recommended. Entrance is by charitable donation. Tours begin at 10 a.m. daily.
One of my highlights from 2 weeks in Mexico. I was totally blown away by the collection and would go back if I visit Mexico again! So much to see, our guide David was entertaining and informative and the pieces were staggering.
Awesome Mexican collection. Arts lover will definitely love it. And its free.
If you visit Valladolid, it is a must to pay a visit to this house. Let me begin by saying that I am not the biggest fan of museums.. But this place was exceptional! Not only it is STUFFED with items from different parts of Mexico, but you also leave with extensive knowledge about the Mexican culture and figures. The guide was extremely informative and enthusiastic. He seemed to love what he is doing. At the end of the tour you can (mustleave a donation of about $5 (or more). We started the tour at 10am. I dont know if there are later tours.
This was a wonderful experience. The artworks are incredible and the House is amazing. Definitely worthwhile.
Great private collection of Mexican folk art that is open to the public. Amazing house and art. So interesting!! David was an excellent tour guide. Strongly recommend seeing this place! Suggested donation of 100 pesos.
A must-see if in Valladolid. An incredible collection of over 5,000 pieces of Mexican folk art housed in an 18,000 square foot renovated Spanish colonial house. Friendly and informative tours each day at 10am, conducted in both English and Spanish, lasting approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Huge private collection, super friendly and enthusiastic guide. The tour took about an hour. They raise money for charity. A must see!
This place was truly amazing. The tour guide was friendly, engaging, and very knowledgeable. The house was filled with wonderful art, and was very fun to tour.
This is a must. The owner are Americans and open their house for tours. There are over 3000 pieces of folk art. They do ask for donations at the end of the tour for helping the locals. It is a lovely place to visit and worth your time.
This museum is very much alive. The three highlights common to many are: The extravagant color used in the works, the knowledgeable guide, and the ability to touch many pieces and use flash photography everywhere.A good demonstration of Mexican culture through the mixture of Maya / Spanish art.One change to make: Guide could be less talkative so its easier to ask questions.
We entered the museum a little around 12:30 thinking that we had enough to see the whole thing before it closed. Our tour took an hour and our host David was great! The house has an amazing collection of folk art and all the proceeds go to charity. Our host explained a lot of the art work and the many stories behind them. At the end of the tour you get to meet the owner of the house and the art. Visiting the museum/house is a must do in Valladolid!
