The source of the logo of the Mateus rosê wine. Old building with lots of atmosphere and a really lovely park/garden surrounding it.

The buildings are well maintained and architecture is very interesting.The well manicured gardens are beautiful with an intriguing tree tunnel.The winemaking area has interesting old bottles of port and wine dating back to 1886.A highlight is the view of the house and its reflection in the pond.There is a small shop that offers a limited assortment of drinks (coffee and beerbeside the house.

A national treasure hidden in the Douro Valley. A cultural center in northern Portugal. An architecture gem included in text books on Portuguese architecture. But most of all to me is its surrounding vineyards and veggie gardens - makes one want to stay forever.

Beautiful castle and gardens to visit if you are nearby. Skip the wine tasting.

What a great place and worth every minute of travel to get there. Even better when we found a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog in a portrait of late Duke. Palace and gardens are stunning.

The beautiful Mateus Palace featured on the bottle of Mateus Rose. Beautiful gardens and an historic house with great original features. If you are visiting the area of Vila Real, this is a must.

Great garden, the guided tour is well worth the price and visit, the garden visit is without guide. The tour guide also recommended excellent place do lunch nearby.

Stunningly atmospheric house and gardens. Well worth a visit and an ideal place to escape from the bustle of main towns like Porto. Guided tours inside the house can sometimes be a little rushed and chaotic and expect lots of visitors in the holiday season.

Went for a guided English tour (a tour is mandatory for access to the house). I felt it was overpriced for 30mins of basic information about the house. All depends on the guide you get. We got to listen to other tours with more informative guides. The biggest let down was the sheer volume of tourists and tours happening at the same time. Just ruins any appreciation you might have felt as we had tours interrupting us and vice Versa during room changes.Nice gardens, although small, but came away with the feeling as empty as the house.

Absolutely beautiful property, but the staff was a bit rude (I think they’re French…), hence the -1 star.To start, parking is difficult so plan to turn into the side street (for freebefore you reach the entrance. I’d personally skip the guided tour ticket and just explore the property on your own. Bring a lunch and buy a bottle of wine, then have yourself a beautiful picnic lunch anywhere on the expansive property.The flowers, architecture and landscape are absolutely stunning. Also…the “grape ale” is a revelation! This place is worth the stop between Porto/Amarante and The Douro.

Very interesting story the wine we all knew did not come from this family or its vines, they sold their name and a picture of the mansion House. Who knew

Another great tourist destination. Respect them they fund themselves. Great architectural designs in the house and very nice gardens. Tales about 90 minutes to do a full tour

Beautiful old early 18 century Baroque building which is depicted on bottles of Mateus Rose. Wonderful garden.

Nice palace but nothing special. Gardens are very nice. Tends to be busy as many of the River boats stop here. Guides are ok but talk tends to seem rote.

We stopped here after deciding to avoid highways on our road trip and randomly passing by, and it was a pleasant surprise! A beautiful villa and gardens. We did not do the guided tour but spent about an hour wandering around and eating cherries straight from the trees. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area/passing by.

Very old and unique Manor house, still used by the family today. Very knowledgeable guide and we saw many rooms with original artefacts and relics. Must do !

The gardens are nice, but the house is not a beauty.

Nice garden. Spend half an hour walking around and rest. 10€ per adult entrance for garden only sounds a lot. Cheaper for kids and students. Nice cafes outside.

Gorgeous place with a special atmosphere. Except being depicted on the label this place has nothing to do with that fizzy rose wine. The gardens alone are worth a visit.

This Palace and Garden is just Marvelous! Youll enjoy your time just walking in the garden. Its really really beautiful. I hope youll have the chance to visit this place.

Stunning place built in the 1800s by the same family. Its almost a museum. Old relics and beautiful gardens. You can also reserve a room for a few days or a week.

Fascinating visit of a still private palace. We enjoyed a lot our passionate guide.

The gardin is indeed beautiful. However its absolutely not worth 10 euros! It took us only about 15min to finish the walk. Felt like another tourist trap. I add one star more for the pinewood corridor.

We visited the gardens in April. Maybe its not the best time of the year to visit, because you cant see the bloom of the roses and the grapes . A Little bit disapointing

Who said all the cool things are in the city...this place has a lot of history...Heck even the President Of Portugal has stayed here...Beautiful Jardim and Casa...I took a guided tour and it was well worth it...A supporter of the the economy of Portugal since 2016

Very informative did 30 min guided tour which covered essentials. Wine tasting interesting comparing to Niagara on the Lake where we live.Grounds and gardens beautiful amazing historical site and info.

Great to see where the wine my mother drank when I was a kid came from. Very scenic area with beautiful grounds.

Great little educational stop while touring the Douro valley! The gardens were great to walk around in, very peaceful. They offer wine tasting but you need to book that in advance.

This is a beautiful and historic mansion with very large ornamental gardens. The guided tour in English was informative and interesting. Worth a visit if you are in the Vila Real or Régua area. There is a decent restaurant opposite for lunch.

Okish but nothing out of this world.. i think the rumours are bigger than the actual site.. entrance fee.. garden.. no view.. okish but would not return

We went for a walk in the gardens and it was nice. €9.50 is a bit too expensive for just a walk in such a small area though.

Breathtaking mansion with 14 generations of history!Definitely a must see while in Vila Real. It is not in the city centre but its a worthwhile detour!There is an option to do a 30 minute tour of the house only, and a 50 minute one that includes a guided visit to the chapel and the beautiful gardens.We did the 30 minute tour and our guide was super interesting, attentive and answered all our questions!It is a bit expensive (we paid 13€ per person to visit the gardens and the 30 minute tourbut in my opinion it was worth the money.

This place is absolutely beautiful and a must visit for everyone. The garden was breathtaking. The roses and the hedges were perfectly trimmed and taken care of. We also went on a guided tour. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and made the experience great. I highly recommend getting the tour.

Casa de Mateus exudes the glory of a former time in Portugese history (mid-1700s). The three primary buildings are the manor, the winery, and the chapel, but the delicately-kept gardens should not be missed.

Amazing Gardens and view. If youre lucky youll get tge chance to taste some graps straight from the vines. Garden entrance is 9.5 E and with a tour inside the house its 13 E.

We visited around noon when the big bus groups were still lunching somewhere, thankfully. An interesting home but you can visit only with their guide.Cost is 13 euros per person including the tour. You must visit the interior with their guide. Garden is very nice. The garden only visit costs less but not worth doing without the house tour.Parking is on the side road about 100 yards/meters before the entrance gate, (across from the restaurant buildingbut it is not a huge lot. Google map found Casa Mateus easily.

Nice guide, interesting house. Be sure you book your visit in advance. I have been in winter and still there were no places for the 1st two tours.

Stunning walk. Stunning house.The garden is above any expectation. The fir tunnels air is to die for.One of the nicest examples of Portuguese garden building !The house is not in the same league but still worths to go with the guided only walks.
