Tunisia, Kairouan
Modest archaeological museum showcasing statues & pottery from nearby excavations.
Very interesting site but unfortunately the museum is still closed in October :/
Beautiful cathedral in the heart of Carthage. It is a shame that the inside is closed at the moment cause of renovation.
great place but u need to make the directions more clean
I know many people say its an underwhelming site but its still an interesting location to visit. Id recommend for anyone who is a history enthusiast. It wasnt as well maintained as other locations but still fascinating.
Kind of a terrible outdoor experience. Not much to see or learn… museum happened to be closed, maybe better once it reopens.
Beautiful historical place indeed
Its not announced that its under maintenance
Interesting ancient place, we get there from la Marsa by lokal taxi driver and it was also good, he was fascinated by history and told us a lot about local hisory
The ruins are nice and you can walk around them. The museum is closed as of the date of this review. The ruins are spread around a rather large area. So expect lots of walking. There are souvenirs sellers outside the main entrance which will try to charge exorbitant amounts of money for "handmade" stuff that can be found at literally any souvenir shop in Tunis.Once you leave the main area of the ruins, you will be approached by very insistent taxi drivers insisting on taking you to the other parts of the ruins. Again, trying to charge exorbitant amounts of money.
The museum is closed and has been for quite some time. The exterior ruins can still be visited. The museum was never particularly good, hopefully when it reopens it will be modernized somewhat. Who knows when it will reopen - could be many years, I imagine.
I love this place! But I feel sorry because we have a treasure that we dont take care of it and we dont spend the necessary amount of money on it.If youre interested in history this amazing place will be a nice monument to visit!
The museum sadly feels and looks neglected compared to 10 years ago. An interesting visit nevertheless
Carthage is complex with hundreds of places to visit not only history but also architecture and Nature together with food and drink makes this spot top to live in Tunisia. Near to airport and port to Italy
Beautiful historic place
It is just so sad how the Tunisians have not preserved these historical treasures. Some like to argue to bring some items back from collections in Europe. I say what will become of those treasures? Current keepers in Europe spend millions of euro to maintain perfect temperature, humidity, and protection from UV light.
When I arrived in January 2020 I discovered the museum was closed. The grounds were open. Many broken Rman artifacts on display. As usually the view of the surrounding area is beautiful.
Very interesting historically but it is sad how little it is cared for like most of the sites around. Wasnt able to go in the museum because it was closed.
the museum is still closed November 2019the surrounding archeological sight is open though, a few ruins to see with poor signageit was nice but i was not very impressed
The place lacked signs to explain pieces, and it had some people from Asia who told me theyre shooting some sort of movie and kicking kicked me away from some areas I wanted to see -wasnt too nice. But its pretty nice just to walk around. The museum was closed too. The ticket is 12 DT and it gets you to 6 other sites. I took a taxi from outside for 50 DT who took me to the 6 places and waited for me, the whole trip took 2.5 hours.
Carthage and carthage museum located in the Tunisia capital city. National museum carthage contains mosaics inscriptions, funeral styles, statues, metal objects, jewellery and articles made of ivory as well as bone. The Roman section in the museum contains statues and some jewels. Christian section contains funeral inscriptions, sarcophagi etc. The Carthage with amphitheatre is a pleasant place to sit back and relax. The rooms are in hexagonal in shape and with dome.
Amazing view, but the museum is always closed!
Very ancient and historical place. Better to visit it with someone who can explain you what this place is about. Touch to History 😊
The museum itself is currently closed for renovations, but the grounds are open. The ticket also gets you into the other Carthage sites, so it ends up being worth it if you are planning on also going elsewhere.
You need at least an h there. A lot to see
Museum is closed for 2 years for renovations. Outdoor sites & ruins are open but the museum is closed.
Since entry was free for students I entered for free so I don’t know how much is the entry fee however going there is sure worth it!U can enjoy the wonderful views while discovering great monuments from the carthago-Roman and Punic Era.
Great experience full of history
Unfortunately, the museum itself was closed for renovation when I went but the grounds hold some interesting items as well as great views of the city. Entrance is included in the 12tnd ticket for all 8 of the main sites in the area.
amazing history inside
Best place to spend a day if you interested in history of Roman.
Of course its still being maintained.
It was closed...no discount thoug
Amazing pice of world history. I wish the museum was open during my visit but it was under repair. Plaques were slightly damaged but the general information was still legible. Overall very good visit.
The building and the area which include the ruins was a little bit neglected. The ticket system was good because you can enter the other ones in Cartage area free with just one ticket. The museum is currently close because of renovation but you can still visit ruins.
Really nice collections and view
Wonderful museum on fantastic location who tells a story of major historical importance
Currently closed for redevelopment (sept 2018no indication when it would reopen
Very nice
Impressive history when you do it with a local guide! The view from the museum is fantastic!
The carthage museun it self is ok, still in the close by anthonine baths or bardo museum it seems unimportant. Not much left of carthage and at this spot nothing. Only from the roman following city Ifrique (modern pronounciation Africa)
I love history and being outdoors so the many Carthaginian and Roman ruins across the area were a fun blend for me. On the one hand the lack of organization, proper maps and thorough explanations are frustrating... on the other the sites have a wildness to them that make for fun exploring where mosaic floors and structures lay across hillsides making for an experience as if you are an archaeologist finding them for the first time.. highly recommend climbing up hills and looking around every corner as many surprises exist. The museum itself consists of multiple locations that require either a walk or short taxi ride between, I recommend starting at the main museum on Byrsa Hill to see the small museum collection and ruins on the hilltop... I spent a full day walking between them all and it’s very doable for healthy active persons. Your access ticket will be 10d plus 1d to use your camera and grants access to all listed properties for one day. Guides offer their services at each stop for reasonable fees if you wish to have fuller guidance and context. Following the main museum I walked to the Amphitheater (small and can be missed if limited time), next onto the theatre (a much larger space and used today for outdoor concerts etcam unlisted site on roadside features a great lineup of columns and just across the street another ruins site... then the Roman Villas (magnificent, climb the hill for a stunning overhead view and go through the main building tunnel as filled w mosaics in various stages of prep for transfer or preservationthen onto Antonine Baths by the sea (make sure not to point your camera at the big white hilltop palace at main ruins as this is the Presidents palace and it’s illegal to photograph government buildings like this in Tunisiathat will make for a pretty full day for most people though if you have time a number of other sites in the complex are easily visited for the intrepid. Enjoy and take water with you :)
Relatively small collection. But it is located at the top of Byrsa hill which queen Dido bought when she settled in Carthage.
Fantastic archaeologic museum - a must visit!
I was very unimpressed with this small museum. The artifacts were small and lack-luster. The signs were cheap and didnt inform me much.
Its a nice place and its a bit hard to walk up to the hill especially in summer.
One of the good museum in Tunisia
Good standard museum with interesting historical pieces
The services there was a bit... well, not perfect, but the musem itself has a lot of beautiful things. Definitely worth to visit...
Very nice museum.
