Please be aware if you visit that they do not allow dogs. Was only just out of my car and got shouted at by a woman that worked there before it was even possible to spot one if the signs that was tucked away in the corner. Had they signs on the outside of the visitors building I could have seen them before letting the dog put off the boot. Would have loved to have seen them and left the dog in the car but I was too upset over the shouting to get out of the car again.

After an easy 1 km walk, you can easily visit and get inside 4 cairns (passage tombs). It was a rainy and windy day, but we loved our experience. We highly recommend!

This is an amazing site! Literally the only people there, road to get there is quite bumpy so best to have a 4x4 but a normal car will make it ... there is a car park and space to turn at the end.... have to climb a hill on foot for about 150 meters.... well worth the trip, 5,400 years old!... worth the visit

tons of tombs to explore! each one is unique and gives you a full sense of exploration. it has a real megalithic aura surrounding it and is full of mystery, but i wont spoil too much! and just when you think you seen all of them, you find there are more! maybe on another hill top, or disguised in the grass, who knows how many more could be buried under the peat. by far one of my favorite megalithic places in sligo, i might even go here again!

Amazing passage tombs and stunning views, 360 degree vista taking in Knocknaree and the cairn of Queen Meabh and Benbulbin. . More than well worth a visit . The tombs pre-date the pyramids. You can see a number of other cairns on the surrounding mountain peaks. When you are up there you can see why they choose it as a special burial place . Easily as good as Newgrange when you take the views and location into account. I dont know how I had nit heard of it before. Pictures dont do it justice, you have to see it.

The views are breathtaking, but be prepared for a change in the weather. It was sunny when we arrived, it then poured down and as we got to the top, the cloud cleared and the view was awesome. There are three places to park, first one before the gate and cattle grid, next parking place at the bottom of stony track. The third one only accessible by a good 4 x 4, do not try in a jeep thats only 2 wd you wont do it especially if its wet. Enjoy, its fresh air at its best.

Incredible landscape , amazing terrain. Take a look at the satellite view of the area to get a sense of the perspective. On a Clear day you can see Croagh Patrick which is 50 miles away. of course the Cairns and Neolithic history is the main attraction, but the big picture maybe explains why our ancestors built these Passage Tombs in this location.

Interesting caves. Very steep walkway up to them. No idea how some people thought it would be accessible to older people. Its been very rainy so the path between caves was quite muddy and slick. Worth the muck though. At the cave entrance, turn around to see the lake shaped like Ireland.

Amazing views and incredibly preserved tombs. Definitely worth a visit. A short walk from where you can leave the car but bring good footwear as the final assent to the tombs is uneven and steep in parts.

Not at all commercialized. Fascinating passage tombs, some can be entered. Powerful experience of the Stone age solstice marker earthworks aligned with other sacred sites in their pristine state. Quite a walk but well worth it.

After the gate labeled "leave gate as found" go straight, keep bearing left. Youll see a sign with a map on it saying that the road is rough but passable- it is.Bear left and follow this small road slowly until the "Pedestrians only sign"From there, keep the sign on your left shoulder and walk up mountain to begin exploring the tombs.Thats it, easy as pie.Wonderful views and a really special place to connect with ancient history. Ill remember this for the rest of my days.

Carrowkeel is situated on the west side of Lough Arrow, overlooking the modern village of Castlebaldwin. It is easy to find, well signposted from the main Dublin/Sligo (N4road below. There are 14 neolithic cairns, dating from around 3,500 BC to be found in the townland of Carrowkeel, and several more on the hill-tops to the west.If you are visiting Carrowkeel please do not climb on the monuments, as the chambers are fragile and many have cracked lintols. This whole area was one of the most important neolithic centres of ancient Ireland. Carrowmore and Carrowkeel are joined by the Uinshin river which flows from Lough Arrow to Ballisodare Bay.The views are spectacular, please visit its well worth it but wear good walking shoes

Well worth a look. It is fascinating the trouble our ancient ancestors went to in such a spot. Fantastic views over Lough Arrow and the surrounding countryside from the tombs. Pick a good day though it is a very exposed area if the weather is poor.

The tombs are free to visit and involve a bit of a walk. The views from the top are beautiful and there are lots of tombs some that you can go inside. The scenery is unspoilt and a real piece of Irish history.

A step back in time...Driving into the site felt like leaping backwards in time. Sheep grazing the mountains and beautiful weather without crowd made for a memorable experience. A relatively easy stroll to the tombs. We were able to crawl into three tombs which provided an eerie, yet awe inspiring experience. Went early and passed many groups on our way back to the car.

This is an amazing place.Carrowkeel has tombs of a similar design to the more famous tombs at Newgrange. In Carrowkeel they are smaller and older. Archaeologists estimate that the tombs are about 600 years older than Newgrange. That makes them the oldest chambers in the world to still have their roofs.Getting there isnt easy. You turn off the road in Castlebaldwin and follow up the mountains blindly. When and if you find them the last mile is a good walk followed by a steep incline up to the tombs themselves. There are three tombs that are easily accessed but there are at least eight of them altogether. The first and third ones can be entered but the second one has collapsed. The rest can only be accessed by hiking over quite rough terrain.

Not well marked, but a lovely walk. You can drive through the gate at the end of the road (though that was a bit confusing at first), and the trailhead from there is clear. After a ways, you will see a " pedestrians only" sign. A small trail goes off to the right, but theres no arrow denoting that, so be on the lookout. The tombs are a short climb from there. Dont stand on top of the tombs, but you can climb inside.

This site has several ancient passage tombs that you can actually enter (climb into). There is no admission fee. This site is located on private land. Its about 35 minutes drive from Slgo. At the end there is a gate, open it (and then close it after yourselfand drive all the way to the top of the hill. Then you need to hike up the hill to the tombs on rather steep unmarked paths for about 30 minutes. If you are doing it alone, you might not be able to find the tombs. I did a tour with Auriel of Seatrails, and really enjojyed it. We were there on a summer solstice day and were lucky enough to see the ray of sun when we were in the tomb. It was a pretty unique expreience.

The location is probably why much of the megalithic complex remains unspoilt. Access to the site is by a fairly robust climb, so be prepared! Once there, however, the whole site is breathtaking. The monuments themselves are awe-inspiring, some with intact light boxes that are used to align with the solstice sun. The views too are genuinely phenomenal. The site is of especial importance to Irish archaeology and myth (see below):Carrowkeel is a Neolithic passage tomb cemetery it’s name: An Cheathrú Chaol means the Narrow Quarter. C14 dating places the tombs at between 5400 and 5100 years old (3400 to 3100 BC), so that they predate the Pyramids on Egypts Giza plateau by 500-800 years. An Cheathrú Chaol is one of the big four passage tomb cemeteries in Ireland, set on high ground above Lough Arrow, and the tombs seem to be oriented towards the area of Cuil Irra, Knocknarea and Carrowmore. There are fourteen passage tombs in Carrowkeel. Some can be entered by crawling through a narrow passage. Six more passage tombs are located close by in the Keshcorran complex. A particular type of crude pottery found in passage tombs has been titled Carrowkeel Ware, having first been recorded in the Carrowkeel Monuments. Close to Lough Arrow and just north of Carrowkeel is another, apparently related, giant passage tomb, Heapstown Cairn. This is part of the legendary Moytura, site of battles between the Tuatha Dé Danann, the ancient gods of Ireland, and the demonic Fomorians. The mountain range containing Carrowkeel is called the Bricklieve Mountains (Breac Sliabh), meaning ‘the speckled mountains’ a possible reference to their appearance when more quartz rock survived on the outside of the cairns, causing them to sparkle in the sun. One can only imagine how these would have looked when first constructed....maybe white (like Newgrangea beacon for miles around.

Local people call this Little Tibet, and it is an unexpected scenery change in the area. Heather covered limestone moorland mainly with cairn remains from A to P, so 16 of them, plus other ancient and ice age relics. 3 of the ancient stone cairns can be entered, B, G and K. A small person could explore O, but very few visitors explore that one. On a clear day up to 18 counties of Ireland can be viewed from the highest point.
