Castle St, Cardiff CF10 3RB, Rhondda
Victorian Gothic fantasy built on the remains of Norman and Roman ruins, with a colourful interior.
Cardiff Castle is a great place to visit. There are the state rooms to see. I recommend a guided tour for these for a small coat extra to the entrance price . The tour lasts about 50 minutes but is an excellent introduction to the fascinating history of the Castle. I did a walk around the Castle walls. There is also a military museum to visit. I have been a couple of times to the castle and not seen everything. The castle is free to enter if you have the Art Pass. The Art Pass is worth getting as it allows free entry to many interesting exhibitions and houses throughout Britain.
Not many towns can boast of having a large castle in the centre of the city, Cardiff can and what a magnificent one it is too.The castle has a long history to tell, so take your time as you wander around. Be sure to visit the museum and see some of the remaining Roman wall. The steps up to the Bailey are steep so not for all.We enjoyed our morning here. Well worth the visit
Really nice castle to visit. I cant exactly remember how much the entry was but they also do student discount, which is worth it. It includes the castle itself, library and the outside grounds. You can easily spend 1-2h there, even more if youre very interested in history etc. There are bathrooms available too and a little van that can give you info about your family name (they did not find mine, so not sure if it costs something)Perfect for kids and without. Outdoor benches to bring your own lunch.
A good way to spend a few hours with kids. Lots to do in order to justify the £39 entrance fee. Impressive house, battlements and castle.
You can view the grounds such as the Animal Wall, Clock Tower & Keep for free but its well worth paying to visit inside the Keep (very steep steps& the Rooms. Plus, definitely pay a little bit more for a guided tour, which takes you to rooms not generally available to the public such as the Nursery & the Roof Garden. Then theres also the Firing Line exhibition (part of paid ticketand the Roman Mural along the Roman Wall (free). I also enjoyed my lunch in the cafe.
A must-visit stop if you’re in town! I heard mixed reviews about whether it was worth it or not to get the ticket and go in, but I’m glad I did. I spent about an hour and a half here with listening to the audio guide on the app and walking around. It’s really cool to be able to go up into the keep and you get some great views from the top as well. The man checking my ticket was also very helpful and extremely friendly!
The castle has a deep history with the city. It is a refurbished castle with great information on the Bute family it also has other exhibits like the firing line which showcases welsh regiments from waterloo to modern day as well as stolen colors from the the American War. The guided tours are informative and show the rooms of the castle in a informative way. The Roman wall could use some love it was dark had trash in it but was still a grand experience to witness
A magical historical place in the heart of Cardiff! It does worth it buying a ticket to see inside the palace and fortress. Just a walking distance from Cardiffs main train station. Totally recommended!!!
What a place to have been happening to visit on the morning of 9th September 2022. Usually opens at 10am but visitors were being advised they were delaying opening until 11.30am that morning- and we are glad we waited in the cafe across the street and returned after 12.30. This meant we were there for the 96-gun salute at 13.00 by the 104th Artillery (I think thats right?- a part of the beginning of the 10 days of mourning for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. So while we didnt have the opportunity to explore the Castle (it remained closed for 2 dayswe and a few hundred others were there for this wonderful start to the commemorations.
A really beautiful castle. Beautiful in and out I must say. The guided tour is well worth it because you get to see all the extras. Amazing view of the city of Cardiff from the top of the castle. Truly magnificent!!
Nice historical site. Spent a few hours here walking around and there are some figures and installations to check out too including the dragon, a wall full of lion and wild cat statues, the fortress etc.Located close to town so can access public transport, shops, restaurants etc.Nice greenery space once you enter in through the gate.
This castle is very nice to look at from the exterior, but it is another story inside. It looks very nice as it reminds us of the old architecture and I assume it has been well maintained for several years. For those who like old architectures/buildings, this place maybe a little paradise. When it comes to the interior, it is not really impressive for the ticket price you need to pay to see it.
Beautiful castle, not the best visit on a rainy day. Steep and long metal steps going up the castle were very slippery with no shelter. The inside parts were fabulous though. Friend visiting Wales loved it.
Lovely place that takes you back in time. Feels like a place out of the movies. Very large ground with a cafe on the ground. No gate fare at entrance into the ground but payment to enter the main castle. Wheelchair accessible. Car park other side of the castle. A family friendly place and awesome tourist site. A historical welsh shop for all your souvenirs just across the street from the castle.
Amazing...well worth a visit.Lots to see both inside and in grounds.Beautifully maintainedLine of fire military 🪖 museum.a gem
Beautiful place, full of history! Very well maintained, helpful staff and lots to see! No parking on site! A very nice park near, where you can have boat trips ( not for free)! Overall, a lovely place where you can find your inner peace!
Great place. You can take marvellous photos even from the outside. When visit, if you can walk out is worth to pay, and see from the inside. If not, the places nearby and linked garden are great as well. From my review, all photos are from the outside.
What an amazing day out! The castle interiors truly are a gothic fantasy, a walk along the ramparts or up to the central motte and Bailey offer an alternative, stunning glimpse into its historic past. Then theres the military museum, WW2 tunnels, cafe and bar. On top of that, with an event on, live music played in the middle. Truly fantastic day!
This was an interesting and fun place to visit and learn more about the history of Cardiff as well as the walls and castles. It was fun taking a photo with the Cardiff Dragon and exhilarating to make a panoramic photo of the city from the tower. Look for the suit of black armor guarding the strollers.
General admission to the grounds are completely free, if you wish to go up the main tower or the house then youll need to buy a ticket which are £14.50 each. Theres an option for a guided tour which is extra which we didnt go for as we just wanted to have a casual mooch around but Im sure its very much worth it. Photos are from "The Arab room" and a view from the top of the tower. Would recommend, especially if you like lots of steep steps.
Brilliant place to visit. Free to go into the courtyard (we only did the free things), but still plenty to see. The house looks beautiful. You have to pay to go into the house and tower, which was expensive then there are add on prices for other things. Theres a few picnic tables so you can bring your own food. Toilets on site. Theres a gift shop and cafe. If you go downstairs in the cafe there is a museum and a wonderful long mural depicting life back then.
Castle is beautiful, as is the grounds.. we didnt do guided tour but still £52 for 2 adults, 1 concession & 1 child and was probably only 6 rooms you can go in which was a bit disappointing although they are stunning rooms. The keep, has amazing views and walking the walls was good and the museum was very interesting too.The big problems for us was the loud music blaring from the "community cricket cup" which we found pretty awful and 100% took away from the peacefulness of the place and finally the toilets which were ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS..filthy, sanitary bins over flowing, no tissue, soaking floor!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Cardiff Castle.Beautiful grounds, which are open to the public for free. If you want to see the other sites within the walls, youll need to pay the entrance fee and it is worth it and reasonably priced.Lots to see, explore and enjoy. Was nice to sit with a lolly and take in the views. Some beautiful architecture with a wealth of history. Highly recommend a visit.
Arrived on Sunday 2 minutes before 5pm, they already closed the ticket sale for the castle entrance and tour, a bit disappointed. Still had lots of fun just walking on the ground, admiring the clock tower, the steep stairs going up to the castle, and the red dragon statue in the square.
A nice castle. I think you can visit everything around the ruins for free, and need a ticket for the castle ruins, the walk around them and the air raid shelter. Tickets are a bit expensive for the attraction provided, considering you can enter other buildings with actual stuff in it for free. A lovely gift shop but again, expensive. Parking around the castle extremely expensive, £4 per hour.
Great castle and grounds in the heart of Cardiff. For those of you that hate to climb a hill to get to a castle this is the one for you! Ground level for the most part except the keep. Lovely area in the living quarters to look through with a great library. The keep is the onlyClimbing requires other than a bit of stairs.
Extremely beautiful castle. We need to take tickets to visit inside the castle but worth it. Staffs were really welcoming and helpful. I really enjoyed the visit.
Very well maintained with beautiful ceilings, not a typical.castle. A visit to the firing lines a must and the Roman Wall. Be careful if you visit the tower/keep as a lot of stairs and quite steep so Id give it a miss if your not great on your feet or have mobility issues.
Great place to visit. Not cheap but worth it. The extra charge small group guided tour is essential. The guide was great, interesting with a theme to the visit and loads of little-known facts to illuminate the experience. All the staff we spoke to made us feel welcome and they all knew their stuff. Well done.
Great place to visit. Good hostoric experience and walking trails. Its situated just in the middle of the city center so sometimes gets detached from its historic value.
It was a very enjoyable visit at the Castle. We also made use of the app you can download using the free WiFi at the ticket desk and you can listen to the explanations for all the points of interest around the Castle. The visit to the house was definitely worth the ticket, the interiors were really nice. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are visiting Cardiff.
Cardiff Castle is perhaps one of my favourite castles in the UK. When you go beyond the castle walls you will see the original castle and it does not disappoint although small it is very beautiful mounted on the mound that would’ve looked at the city for many many years. I have attended the castle outside of any entertainment gigs and also for concerts. I’ve always found the staff to be very friendly, the food service efficient and a great venue even if you do get a little bit of rain which is typical in Wales.
I covered everything in just over an hour on a whistle-stop visit. If you want to listen to the audio guide (free with your ticket), and take yourtime, I think you could spend about half a day there. I believe you can enter the castle grounds without a ticket but have to pay to get into anything e.g. the Norman keep, the walk around the castle walls, wartime tunnels, Roman wall, museum and manor house, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The castle is right in the city centre, which is handy! The staff are brilliant - very helpful in guiding you to points of interest. There is a cafe there too but I didnt visit that. Toilets on site.
Coming from New Zealand, this is the first castle Ive been to so it was really exciting! There was the famous dragon and areas of castle to explore.Near the entrance is a name history stall where I got to find out the origins of my own family name. The specialist in the stall was very knowledgeable, adding stories of history that he knew and it felt great to learn so much about my own ancestors.Id recommend this short visit if you get the chance, its a great break in the day and a chance to be surrounded by the amazing Welsh history of Cardiff.
Great visit to this place of history. Plenty to do even if the weather is not good but today it was great. Very helpful staff who aid you in getting the best out of your visit.
We dont love too far from Cardiff and have always wanted to go to the Castle but still hadnt managed it! Until Madness.... Brilliant night, great space, lovely stewards, excellent all round. Cant wait to come back in the daytime!
Advise you book tickets in advance to avoid queues during peak times and holidays.A very historic site of Cardiff, and most areas are accessible by either displaying or scanning your QR code on mobile. The walk to the very top of the castle is a must with great views. And dont forget the walk through the underground tunnels of old, with its sounds of war.A very good site well located and can be accessed off the main road or if you wish to complete a walk through the park of rare trees, then simply come round from the bottom end.
Please download the cardiff castle app and carry your earphone before you reach castle. The entry fee is a substantial amount (as compared to other castle in UKvisa viz what it offers. Only the castle entry is on payment. Time required for the visit is maximum 2 hrs. Nevertheless the surrounding area is also well maintained and one can spend time with family without the entry fee. Basic snacks, sandwiches and coffee is available. Its a good experience.
Unexpectedly interesting. Amazing rooms. Definitely do both the additional tower and house tours. Both guides were informative and entertaining in different ways. Only complaint was that we bought tickets in advance and then had to buy additional tickets for those tours, rather than being able to get it all at once. So theres really no point booking online in advance. I dont think it was even mentioned before I bought the tickets that to see all the best bits you need to pay again.
Cardiff Castle is an experience you won’t forget. Travel through time with the war time tunnels and a gorgeous climb to the top of the medieval tower; which has far ranging views of the capital city of Wales. Recommended.
Really worth the visit. The Castle tours we thought were worth every penny. There is so much to see. The Bute family home decorations fascinating with such interesting details to uncover.
A dramatic setting no matter what the weather. Lots to see and do, great for youngsters, plenty of room to run around.Food and refreshments available as well as a gift shop. Helpful friendly staff.
Really enjoyable visit. The ticket includes the old castle, the house, tunnels and the fire line exhibition. You can download the official Cardiff castle app for a free guidance and history of the Castle and surrounding place. You can also take your own coffee and food and sit for a free inside the Castle on the wooden beaches, or on the grass. I would recommend the place for everyone who is looking for the history of the castle, exploring history of Cardiff.
Class. Great day out. Lots to see for free but you need to get the tickets to see the rest. £14.50 per adult to see a little more - a little pricey for what you get. You have to more again to see the rest of the castle rooms. Great little museum all about the armys through the ages. Little boys and girls will love it too. Huge green area for family picnis with lots of picnic tables and a nice cafe for all your food and drink needs.
Absolutely beautiful castle and grounds. This year it hosted the winter ice rink until Omicron decided to mess up every ones social life. It has a beautiful banquet Hall for events including weddings, awards ceremonies etc... one of Cardiffs historic gems. The grounds around it are beautiful and great for picnics.
Absolutely must go. The grounds are free to enter but it is worth paying to get entry to the house and a guided tour. Go round the underground galleries under the outer walls. Also listen to the commentary on the website by Hugh Edwards. Its easy to spend the day here. If you dont want to bring a picnic the restaurant cafe in the shop does a very well-presented and tasty sandwich with accompanying salad.
Great place to visit. Wish we had more time to spend. Friendly staff. Be warned, the steps up the castle will take it out your legs if your getting on.
Its a pure pleasure to visit this place. Absolutely brilliant interiors, an impressive bomb shelter, an interesting museum of the Welsh soldier, and a lovely place to just have a small picnic.I almost envy you seeing it the first time!
Great attraction at the centre of Cardiff, plenty to see, the keep where you can climb to the top for great views, although there is an art to timing when to go up or come down the steps as they are narrow, you can book a full tour of the house for an additional fee, the standard ticket allows for restricted access, there is also a small military themed museum beneath the ticket office and World War Two era bomb shelters to explore. Nice day out that will keep you busy for a while, and of course there is a cafe
Pretty good place, not great. Its got a good gift shop on the premises and the castle part is ok. It only takes 30-40 minutes to get through the whole thing. Oh, the War museum downstairs is probably the best part, with a lot of cool artifacts.
