Captain Cook's Monument - Monument in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom
Great place for a dog and baby walk! Plenty of parking spaces even though it was rather busy (bug group of walkers).Fantastic views when you get to the top!
Great walk very beautiful but the only problem we found was with the parking we could not find anywhere to park. Apart from that it was an exelent view from the monument
Love this place, if youre lucky youll get to see the paragliders putting on a show
Great view from the monument, a climb to get the but worth it
Lovely walk from rose berry topping to the momuent
Great place to walk through the woods on the forest road. Then off and around the heather covered moors in full bloom up to the monument, its outstanding views all around with the Cleveland hills disappearing into the distance and the valley of kildale down below .
Beautiful walk with gorgeous views.
Class place great walk great viewing
Visited last evening came to do a little photography on the moors the monument itself isn’t that photogenic but managed to find some bell Heather and a dark moody sky the views around a dramatic good walking especially if you have a dog the walk up from the car park is steep in places but there’s a good path going up well worth a look
While I felt on the verge of dying from a heart attack on the way up, the views from the top make it totally worth it, you can see for miles around. The actual location of the path up to the monument could be made more clear, as well as whether parking is free or charged.
Fantastic views from here.
First time here, been to roseberry many times, definitely to adding this visit to my trips there from now on, spectacular view, and makes the walk to roseberry so much more enjoyable.
Walked from Guisborough forest to the monument with my son absolutely loved it did over 27000 steps.
Not the best day to be traipsing across the Moors. But the walk was worth it.
Lovely walk with family and dog. Views unbelievable but also a lovely walk back over to roseberry topping if your feeling up to it
This is a no frills monument...meaning there isnt a fancy cafe or ice cream shop around and you dont need to pay to visit....which makes it even more attractive. A good steep walk from the car park to the top and then a gorgeous view from there. Adventururers can take a more interesting route than the normal plain steep walk.
The monument itself is not so interesting from close - it is more impressive as a point of guidance from further away, but the view is amazing.
Great views from here and access was steep but easy.
Amazing views, great walks, steepish climb so some good foot wear needed, tricky for very little people ie kids but really enjoyable. Wont be disappointed.
Went for a lovely walk. Parked at Gribdale, and walked to Roseberry Topping then back up to Captain Cook. Only 9km and manageable for any novice walker at a nice steady pace
Lovely walk up a massive hill to fantastic views! Totally worth it!
Good walk up from great Ayton, which itself is a lovely village. Free public toilets. Great shops for snacks, pies, drinks. Good pubs and eating places for after the walk too
Its an impressive looking piece of mountain looking onto you from far and convincing to hike it. I like hikes. This is an entry-level walk/hike Ive done. It took me 20k steps to top and to walk around Roseberry topping. I enjoyed every moment of it. Even walking into private land and being kicked out of there. Or helpful old man providing me with directions while searching for his amazon parcel delivered. Could be great for a family walks too...go do it.
Fabulous walk today from Grib Gate car park at the bottom of Captain Cooks monument. Fresh earlier on but stunning views and a lovely 7 mile walk over the moor. Road up to the car park isnt great especially when you have drivers who dont care about other road users
Love this place. Lots of great memories with my family and friends
I enjoyed the circular walk right up to captain Cook monument then straight down the right through the woods then walking straight up to the roseberry top but we never climbed the top of roseberry just around it then walk straight back down to the carpark its a circular walk and we did 5 miles if you climb the roseberry hill it will take a bit longer to reach the carpark
Stunning views, well worth the walk up!
Fantastic views on a sunny day. Look North to see Roseberry Topping in the distance. Ideal for the dogs to explore. Look West to see Bilsdale Transmitter perched on the hill. Whoever said it was a 15min walk to the monument from the car park was obviously having a laugh.
Worth the walk up the hill. Amazing views, sat at the top for quite a while just watching the world go by.
Moderately easy walk up an great views. Kids loved it.
Excellent walk upto the Monument, great views, we came from roseberry topping and done a loop through great Ayton 👍
A Beautiful and remote spot with stunning views. Great walk from Great Ayton and back via Roseberry Topping😎
A nice easy climb to a selection of tremendous views. Car park makes the climb even easier. The monument itself is impressive and bigger than I remembered.
A lovely place to walk during the day or in the evening, with connections to the Cleveland way and fantastic views of Rosebury Topping especially on a clear-ish day.
A great place for walking with fantastic views of the surrounding area.
We climbed Roseberry Topping and walked along the Cleveland Way to the monument. A great walk but quite strenuous in places. About 8 miles in total. If you want to visit the monument, there is a car park at the bottom of the hill.
Well worth the short walk up from the car park, or as part of a route between the Monument and Roseberry Topping. The Monument is plain, but its the plaque in it which is interesting. Plus, theres a cracking view towards Great Ayton, where Captain Cook spent some of his formative years.
A testing walk up but can rest if choose to. Amazing all around views.Absolutely breath taking.
Great place to visit, first time ever in my life to walk up it and it was well worth the wait. I would recommend a walk up and enjoy the viewd
A great short walk with fabulous views over the Cleveland Hills and towards Roseberry Topping!!
Lovely day and walk to one of our beauty spots in the grime north haha..😉
A nice walk up to the monument. Impressive views from the top. Plenty of free parking. Can be combined into a longer hike to or from Rosebery Topping.
Amazing view and great monument. If you are walking from the car park it’s about 15 minutes each way. We walked from Roseburry Topping Car parked and probably took about 2 hours to get there and 1.5 back.
This is a stunning section of the Cleveland Way. Admittedly, we were very lucky with the weather for early March. Most people visit Captain Cook’s Monument from the North. The path from Kildale is lovely and less frequently used, and it gives you a sense of being away from it all on the Moors. The climb is relatively gentle. It is only when you get to the monument that you suddenly get the view, and it is breathtaking. Take drinks and snacks, because there is no cafe at the top (you have to go back down to Kildale for the tea-shop). Please take all litter home and leave it pristine.
Stunning panoramic views. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny day in January, blue skies, not windy, not cold. VERY steep climb up and I wasnt sure if I would get all the way up, but eventually, I made it and the views were worth it!
The monument is not much but the views of the surrounding countryside, including Roseberry Topping is worth the climb from the car park below.
This was the first time I have been up Captain Cooks monument and it did not disappoint. Lovely walk direct from the car park and a great family walk. Better than Roseberry Topping for kids and dogs as there are no sheer drop offs to worry about
Nice steady uphill walk to the monument viewpoint. Some amazing views of the whole area from the top with some interesting info about our local lad Captain James Cook. You can walk across to Roseberry topping from here and/or to Great Ayton for a little extra on your step count.
Lovely walk. Nice and easy to do with kids. Amazing views from the top. Picnic tables at the bottom with BBQ stands. Free parking. No toikets so be prepared to sneak behind a bush if You need to too. You can walk from Captain Cooks along to Roseberry Topping, also an nice easy walk.
Beautiful place to take walk with spectacular views of the surrounding area on a clear day you can literally see for miles.
