Whimsical, long-running chain fixing up classic and creative pancakes, plus cocktails and ice cream.
The food and service are both nice here. And the restaurant atmosphere is both warming and friendly.
Delicious pancakes, amazing prices, staff is extremely friendly. Cozy breakfast place with a beautiful atmosphere. $5 for 2 pancakes with ice cream!
Went here 3 times a week for the 5 dollar pancake, 2 stacks pancake with 1 generous scoop vanilla pancake. Completed with really cozy place. Perfect
Food was mediocre and most definitely overpriced. Staff were friendly, in particular Harry, who made the entire dining experience a whole lot more enjoyable. This review would honestly be a lot lower if it wasnt for Harry. Give Harry a raise.
Edit: I have become a regular here now. I LOVE this place! It is a gem - the quality of food is so amazing and portions so generous. The vibe of this place is so comfortingly old-school. Simple things like pancakes can be such a treat - I never knew!!! The potato-cheese pancake is dreamy! The service I got first time may be a one-off and it doesnt matter anymore. Highly recommend!!!Loved the retro feel. But nobody came to serve us for a while, so I got up and got the menu on my own. Then finally a lady (she wasnt wearing the usual black that the staff wear; i deduced she was the manager?owner?noticed us and assigned us a server. The price was quite steep but when our food finally arrived, it blew our minds and changed our moods! The vanilla ice cream that came with the pancakes was so good - and normally vanilla is my least preferred ice cream flavour! Overall, high high quality food. However, the kitchen staff forgot my order of their home-made iced tea. So even after my meal finished, I kept waiting. Finally, when I got the chance to call my server and ask again, I could see she talking to the kitchen staff and they hurriedly pour my drink from the fridge. The drink was very refreshing and had flavourful citrus zest, but the long waits and disorganised service took away from my experience. The staff were, however, smiling and amicable.I think the large, almost maze like setup of booths and hiring of very young kids as servers is causing the unorganised mess...
Delicious food with decent serving sizes, and the staff are always on the ball and happy to help. Most of the main meals havent changed since it was Pancake Parlour, which is a positive! The issues would be that it is a bit expensive, and definitely isnt suitable for older people/ physically impaired people as there is a VERY steep staircase to enter the restaurant.
Lovely atmosphere and great food. The $5 special of two pancakes with ice cream was accessed several times on our stay. Wasnt popular on the occasions we were there. Friendly staff. The "mega milkshake" was disappointingly medium sized and expensive, but thick and tasty.
Awsum service, variety of sweet and savoury pancakes. Omg the desserts are simply the best.
Lovely old school dinner experience with a lovely selection of savoury and sweet pancakes and crepes. Good service from friendly staff! I really enjoyed the experience. If you want to escape the everyday hustle an bustle head down to the quiet and quaint restaurant.
This was so amazing. I love Pancakes on the Rocks in Sydney, but I think this might be even better! Those pancakes are so soft! I love that they do an all-day breakfast. Its such a great combination of sweet and salty. The decor is fabulous too. The old timey feel is so cool. Its so retro. The milkshake was so thick that you think it was almost a sundae. It was glorious. Staff are super friendly too and very quick. Service was brilliant. I loved this place. They have a huge sweet and savoury range of pancakes and crepes. Something for everyone.
This place is lovely, very very old school, easy to find, not accessible by wheel chair. Extremely clean facilities and restaurant. They have games to play, huge chess set up ready to play, big menu. The staff were lovely. The reason Im only giving 4 stars is because there is room for improvement, the menu definitely needs an update and it is such a large space it feels like an old pancake parlour but could be alot more fun with some boppy 80s music, splashes of colour and more lighting. But overall, yummy food, definitely on the more expensive side for what you get. Definitely an iconic parlour to visit in Canberra.
Excellent food! So many delicious options of both sweet and savoury pancakes, some crepe options and amazing potato pancakes. Reasonable prices. Good drinks menu. Comfy seats. Great atmosphere.
Its quaint. It has prompt service and good food at fair prices. Renowned for pancakes which were great. Nice memorabilia on the wall.
Food was delicious with outstanding service. The giant chess table is such a great idea.
What made this experience was the staff. Our waitress was the perfect person for hospitality. The food was good, probably not 5 star good but its pancakes not a hatted restaurant. Our waitress went above and beyond and really looked after everyone! And the owner was lovely to chat to.
Excellent pancakes, quaint and cosy ambience and good service. Super-hit with the kids. Quick 5 min walk from the large retail parking space. Place was expectedly busy for a Sunday morning. Cheerfully greeted and taken to an area that could accommodate our 7 member group, though we did not have reservations. Separate kids menu. Drawing paper and crayons provided for the kids. All the pancake items were fantastic. Hot chocolate was average. Overall an awesome breakfast experience. Will visit again
Beautiful place with a nice, warm, old-school feel. Lots of interesting black & white pictures to look at. Food and drinks were excellent! Felt that service was a bit slow. Staff could provide bells or call-buttons at tables for customers to get their attention.
Absolutely love this place. Prompt friendly service. Generous servings. Great family atmosphere and long opening hours. A long time staple of the Canberra scene and a very pleasant environment for friends, family or even on your own. I love the historical timeless feel and soft acoustics (sound absorbing wood). Great venue. Five stars.
Good-Located in Civic.-Looks like heritage interior.-Very friendly and bright staff.-Student menu available.-Kids menu available.-Good portion of food.-Open from 0700 everyday.Bad
Charming and good value. The blueberry pancakes were lovely and had heaps of berries. We also picked up a voucher for a free pancake next time by handing in my son’s colouring in picture (we were more excited about that than he was).
A great find, this unique restaurant serves breakfast lunch and dinner and has a huge menu of sweet and savoury options. My lemon pancakes were freshly cooked and delicious. I also enjoyed a real cup of tea, which had a pot of boiling water thoughtfully included on the side. The kids enjoyed ordering from the kids menu and were very pleased with their pancakes and sprinkles. Service was fast and friendly. Definitely worth a visit.
Lovely and helpful staff to get down the stairs with a pram. Great breakfast on a weekend with fast service and quality food. Just as special as when i was a child. I love that you can see the kitchen and that the staff speak to each other respectfully. Such a perfect way to treat yourself on the weekend. Great food, atmosphere and service.
Really enjoyed a quick breakfast. Service is adequate, food is filling and sometimes you just need pancakes. Good for families. Not good for prams or mobility aids as there are some serious stairs to go down to the dining area.
Pancakes where lovely but unfortunately the service was slow, we arrived shortly after opening before it got crowded and still had to wait over 20 mins then ask a staff member to come take our order as the restaurant was getting busier which resulted in another 30 minute wait for food and drinks.. including 1 beverage not being served until staff had been reminded 3 times that we were still waiting for it. Overall not a great experience with young children
The place has really gone down hill. Customer service is terrible and the meals are nothing special anymore. Arrived for breakfast and was shown where our table was but then the waiter disappeared without leaving menus for us. Had to grab our own and then grab the waiter 20 mins later to take our order. Waited almost an hour for food and even then they kept bringing out the wrong meals. They lost our drinks order so got drinks after our meals were finished. The place is drastically understaffed. Takes way too long for meals to be served. The tables are left with dirty dishes on them. We wont be back for breakfast again.
As soon as I walked in I was greeted and seated in peak hour. Moments after putting the menu down we were served and our meal came out within 5 minutes. The staff are friendly and inviting and the food is great!
Review Context: Family of 4 with 2 adults in early 40s and 2 girls aged 8 and 6 from Sydney. Australian Day long weekend in Canberra.Looked for a place to eat for our picky kids who only eat bacon/eggs and pancakes, ended up finding a place that provided all this in one. There is a kids menu with good portion sizes for the girls. Our 8 year old got 1 pancake with bacon and eggs and the 6 year old got "Lucy in the sky", which is 2 pancakes with ice cream and chocolate fudge sauce. My wife and I shared the "Rather large pancakes" which had 3 pancakes, sausages, grilled tomatoes and fried eggs. The pancakes were delicious, very fluffy and flavour was spot on. The other items were great as well. The staff were friendly and attentive and the with the old world charm of the decor created a very relaxed and warm experience. The kids were offered kids menus with a colouring stencil on the back, so kept them occupied for a while.Prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. The only negative would be the coffee, if compared to the quality that we have come to expect back in Sydney.Definitely recommend this place for families.
Very pretty vintage place and the pancakes taste really good. It’s fluffy and soft! However, the portion is too small. Ordered bacon and eggs pancakes and literally only had one slice of bacon. But other than that, it’s all good.
Friendly and great service. Cant go past the cheese and potato pancake with fresh garden salad. DELICIOUS !! Most recent visit they are adding so munch onion to the recipe. Ask before you order ... the extra onion was way too much!
Pretty expensive for what you get, but what you get is actually quite tasty. Tried a Russian (?Pancake with sweet cream cheese filling, it was great! The pancake was soft and sweet and crispy around the edges, and the filling was nice. $17 for a pancake and a scoop of ice cream is a bit too much though. On the plus side, its BYO with no corkage fee :)
This place used to be The Pancacke Parlour. Now looks like its under new management. The food is not that great, same goes for the drinks. My wife had a coffee and I had a hot chocolate. Both were not good and tasted like they had been watered down. The food was not great either. The pancakes were really dry and pasty. The staff were friendly but seemed disorganized. We had 3 different people take our order, bring the drinks and then food. The price is high for what it is now.
Loved reading the story of the place, had an awesome interior and loved the decor definitely a cool place to eat. Prices are awesome, pancakes are great and the service was speedy. Would love to come back.If requiring disabled access ring and ask before arriving as I only saw stairs leading to the restaurant.
Service is always good. Place closes late at night which is perfect for when I have to eat a decent dinner after 9pm. The savory pancakes/crepes are quite expensive though so we only visit the place a few times in a year.
Excellent meal, great service. We hv just come back since the change of name and its still great. I think its a slightly smaller menu but thats not such a bad thing 👍
Great place to get breakfast, rapidly in a cold Canberra morning. The restaurant is warm and cosy, with lots of diner style booths. The staff here are friendly and helpful and the pancakes are amazing. My only minor complaint would be that they dont serve any brewed coffee, only espresso based coffee
Although the name has changed the pancakes certainly didnt disappoint, with a variety of savoury and dessert pancakes along with a selection of crépes this place provides a filling meal for anyone. The decór and layout of Capital Pancakes allows families or individuals to enjoy a nice meal without distraction, and they have a giant chess board to play while you wait.
Came here for a Friday morning breakfast, after having not been in since it was the Pancake Parlour. I think theyve definitely improved a few things - the menu was simpler (but seemed to have most of the old favouritesand the prices are also lower, with good breakfasts specials. Friendly service too.We got two of the bacon/eggs/pancakes meals - one with blueberry pancakes and one with plain. Everything was really excellent. The pancakes were fluffy, the bacon was crispy, and the eggs were perfect. My pot of tea also came with extra hot water on the side, for top-ups. All in all, we couldnt fault it. Well definitely be back again!
My friend Timothy and I greatly enjoyed our meal here. The ambience and atmosphere were excellent and the food was served promptly. Prices were reasonable for serving size. Will be back in 3 months when I retire :)
Relaxed, friendly and tasty with a great range of pancakes and crepes both sweet and savoury. Lots to like in this Canberra institution including classic decore and a giant chess set. Very family and kid friendly with lots tucked away tables making for a great atmosphere.
bit of an institution! it has replaced the old pancake parlour, but same owners. food quality and menu are pretty consistent with the previous arrangements. we went on mothers Day, where they offered a special menu - not sure what the menu is like typically. Decor is largely unchanged. not fine dining by any stretch, but reliable, tasty fare.
My 3rd time coming here and its still great. Desserts are a bit overpriced but the meals are great. You can get anything with pancakes! Highly recommended for a family dinner out.
The recent changes to this restaurant are all for the better! I went for breakfast for the first time since it has been renamed and it was the best meal I’ve ever had here. The food was delivered super quickly, the prices are lower than before and there are some great new additions to the menu including the amazing blueberry pancakes. Oh my goodness these pancakes were delicious! So fluffy! My coffee was hot and strong, staff were friendly and the decor is largely unchanged which I was relieved about; we love being able to sit in a booth every time. I think I’ll be eating here a lot more often now!
Ive eaten here for a number of years. The new name and new slimline menu are really the only changes. Same great service, same great taste. My friend had their preferred potato and cheese pancake and can confirm still tastes the same. I had the zucchini fritatta and it was mighty tasty. We shared a banana pancake for dessert and it was also well done.the pancakes were all light and fluffy and the flavours seemed burst out of every mouthful. The service was appropriately friendly and casual as befits the vibe of the location. The new menu has a few new dishes to try, whilst still maintaining some old faves. Its great to see a local institution reinventing itself and coming out better for it.
Worn (cozy), but clean; quick and friendly service. Foods a bit expensive for the quality. Portions were good - Not too much or too little. Ordered the Eggs Benedict with hash browns ($23.90), long black coffee ($3.60), and OJ ($7.40). The eggs were a bit overcooked and presented on a sourdough pancake instead of the traditional way. It wasnt a good match and I ended up eating the eggs off the pancake. The hash browns were overcooked, beyond extra crispy with a taste of burn in them. There was nothing else on the plate, so it seemed a bit rushed. Also was served my breakfast before my drinks, and had to ask for the drinks again to get them. My long coffee was served in a glass tumbler like what the small drinks come in. Disappointing overall.
Very nice food, friendly staff!
Great pancakes, excellent service, friendly staff, wonderful decor, great for the whole family, great meal selection and excellent value for money, well worth a visit, the only issue I could make was the stairs to get in the restaurant is downstairs was an issue getting the pram down however the staff came to our aid helping to carry it down and up
Our favourite place in Canberra. Kids love their ice cream pancakes. Cool hang out area.
Soft fluffy pancakes. Fried banana highly recommended.
Ive been visiting this place since I was a child and now love bringing my own children here. Having a spider icecream soda and laughing at yourself in the crazy funhouse shape changing mirror makes you feel like a child again 💖 It is so peaceful down here and if you cant have a turn of the giant chess set then they supply smaller sets for your table. My son didnt want to leave. And thinking sweet pancakes arent your thing .. they have delicious savory pancakes too. Potato pancakes with chicken and napoli sauce with salad was a huge hit with my children plus the deluxe fries with bacon and sour cream. There are crayons and colouring-in for young children who will win a free pancake for their next visit if they hand it in. Which is gratefully accepted by someone like myself who is on a tight budget as coming here is moderately pricey and is a very rare treat.I remember being alot younger and coming to share one of their world famous banana splits down here on a date. A perfect date dish. Sadly now my boyfriend is vegan and while the pancake parlour in Melbourne has a great vegan menu, Canberra does not. Last time all he could have was a lemon drink which was way too sour for him.The only other sad thing is the steep staircase to get down into the place. While I acknowledge there isnt much that can be done it makes it difficult for anyone with a pram, in a wheelchair, older people and for people like myself who have a chronic back injury and find stairs difficult. There may be a lift or another way down but ive lived in Canberra my entire life and have never known about it.
Quite good, friendly service....a little over priced and the meal itself was a bit sweet for some peoples liking although overall it was pretty good
