Cathedral House, 11 The Precincts, Canterbury CT1 2EH, Lai
Norman-built, CofE place of worship with organ recitals, Medieval stained glass and a vast library.
Unlike many cathedrals or chapels visited, this one is always active. A beautiful building and grounds within a city of ancient buildings. Many of the buildings I visited were 14th century. A lovely market area, teeming with tourists.
Canterbury Cathedral is beautiful, with helpful volunteers and some brief and interesting history in the crypt. You are encouraged to take photos (rare!), and there is also a good bookshop, cafe, and toilets. We saw it in a brisk 45 minutes but could spend a little longer if wanting to linger throughout.Note: If you are a UK taxpayer, you can do gift aid and get entry for a year. Just make sure to ask when purchasing the ticket if they don’t raise it.
As expected this Cathedral is spectacular. Not only the cathedral building but the grounds as well. A day to go round and look at everything is not enough and so the ticket that lasts for a year is welcome. A super visit.
Lovely second visit! Better than the first, amazing architecture and interior, stained glass windows are amazing. We went back for service which is daily at around 5/5:30pm, the choir singing and the acoustics are phenomenal, highly recommend going to hear them.
Rich history, great architecture went on a tour and got to walk almost everywhere within the cathedral. If your in Canterbury definitely check it out.
What an amazing Cathedral. I’ve been to a few through the years, but Canterbury cathedral is a real gem. Such a fascinating site with so much to see. The history as with most is deep and the names you see, such as the black prince, Edward the confessor are too steeped in history. The place is supported by a wonderful team who are eager to help and answer your questions. Places like this really do show the world how amazing our little island is. The cathedral is a must see if you’re in the area or visiting the UK - you’ll get the wow factor as soon as you see the entrance. Tucked behind various buildings of old, the cathedral sits on its own ground surrounded by related buildings, such as the monks quarters etc. a fascinating experience which can’t be missed.
The city of Cantebury revolves around this imposing cathedral that contains centuries of history. If you visit Cantebury, you just cant miss it.We went with the 2 hour guided tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and highlighted all they key events (some gruesomeof the Cathedral.Tickets are £14 and it gives you access to the cathedral for the entire day.
Stunning monument.Shame it is currently going under restoration which looks badly needed.Inside is majestic and peacefully.Stain glass windows are impressive. Its not over the top like other cathedrals.Reasonable price to visit.Looking forward to return to see completed and explore a bit more
Luckily got the chance to attend an evensong service. Its free to attend and is a great way to experience the cathedral. Leave a donation if you wish. Works were being done outside which took a little glean away from the structure but it was still a sight. Itd expensive to just go in and look around so be ready for that. Lots of history. You can walk around the grounds for free.
A nice cathedral, but the entry price was a bit over the top at £14 a person, especially when many cathedrals are FREE like the one in Rochester! It was bigger I suppose and featured a nice wooden horse outside 😀
A stunning Cathedral surrounded by many historical houses and places of interest. Its not often packed which makes the Cathedral a top spot if youre in town. The nearby eateries are vast so youll have plenty to see, do and experience.
An ancient cathedral where many events have occurred for over one thousand years. We visited to sign a book of condolence for her majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 to thank her for her many years of service and duty. The cathedral hosts many historic sites, including where Thomas Becket was murdered in the 12th century.
Stunning history. Worth a visit. Get an English Heritage card, for a discount plus if you gift aid, you get free entry for a year, when youve paid once. Incredible building and architecture. Say a prayer, its very comforting.
Entry fee is £14 for an adult. Absolutely stunning Cathedral. You can almost feel the history! You can have a guided tour or an audio/ media tour. The guides really know their stuff! Or you can just wander on your own. Thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon here. Would highly recommend a visit.
Canterbury Cathedral is the first place people visit once in Canterbury. This is a beautiful church, full of the history but unfortunately there is a lot of noise that doesnt allow you to enjoy the visit property. Personally I think this is the only negative note of the visit. The staff is friendly and there are many volunteer guides who are very available and clear.P.S. visiting the cathedral using an audio guide and taking some times to take photos or enjoying the stained glasses lasts about 3 hours.
Amazing place! Such history and still being used today for the glory of God. Was present for services related to the Lambeth Conference, and everything was enhanced by this glorious building. Need to come again and look round more!
One of the most stunning cathedrals Ive ever seen, extremely well-maintained, spotless, and clearly explained. We were fortunate to have a bright day, so we relaxed on the grass and admired the gardens. Highly recommended!
My favourite Cathedral and favourite town. The Cathedral is impressive and the gardens and town that surround it add to the unique character of this town. This place makes it to my top pilgrimage spots in the world.
Beautiful cathedral with quaint, peaceful grounds. It has tours and is definitely a must if youre near. I have one slight quibble that the entrance fee is expensive.
This cathedral stands up to its reputation as the most famouse church of England. The long history of this place is fascinating and i love it.The artichecture is gorgeous and the oldest part are still beautyfull even if ruined.
Stunning architecture. A bit of a queue to get in on a sunny day but efficient system that keeps you moving. Plenty to see and do once in the grounds and cant help but look up.
Historical English heritage, worth a visit for the history, architecture and culture in Canterbury. Amazing experience inside the cathedral and around in the area.Takes around 2-2.5hrs to visit if you also buy an audio guide (which is £5), alternatively you can go with guided tour.Fairly good availability when we visited but possible to book ticket online and check how busy it will be.Be aware a few parts of the cathedral dowsnt allow photography or loud talk.
An architecturally magnificent cathedral. The symmetry is breathtaking and its history fascinating. The Hugenot Chapel in the crypt if worth visiting.
So beautiful! They had an amazing scavenger hunt for the kids and it helped us find the really cool statues and tombs dedicated to the significant people laid to rest there! I definitely recommend a visit!
A stunning cathedral even with the scaffolding and maintenance work going on. There are guides in most areas with a wealth of knowledge to bring history to life. The surrounding gardens are lovely and peaceful. Entrance through visitor centre and shop.
Beautiful cathedral, stunning architecture. We came very early and were about the first to enter the vast building so if you want to take pictures without too much "people clutter" then make sure you are there at the opening hours. Very, very impressive. Actually, the cathedral grounds are a substantial part of the city.
The cathedral has beautiful grounds to explore and you can view the cathedral. I would suggest to get there early if you want to avoid the queues. We went in about 930am and left about 1130/12. You can take your dogs in the grounds but not inside the cathedral. The ticket I purchased allows me to reenter without payment as many times as I like for 12 months. A must see if you are in Canterbury
This cathedral is absolutely unique, humongous and filled with history. We visited during the jubilee weekend and the queues were massive but once we were inside every minute waiting was worth it. The cathedral is a man made wonder filled with details, beautiful sights and an incredible amount on sections to visit. We spent around 90 minutes here absorbing as much as we could, but it felt we barely grasped the surface. The £14 entry is cheap compared to what you get inside. A true wonder of the world
After read Ken Follet best seller The Pillars of the Earth, I was so curious to see the Canterbury cathedral, also because start the Francigena way. Is a important cathedral, building, church, historic place. The flame of candle where Thomas Becket was murdered give you emotion and historic thoughts. It’s a must. A place to visit.
The website didnt say anything about the majority of the place being closed off to visitors - reduced entry of £5 to get it. Disapointed as I would have liked to have seen more and made a special trip to go there. The front of building is covered in scaffolding too. I was rather underwhelmed by the place and disapointed. Will have to come back when the scaffolding is done, no services, no graduations and no farewell to the Dean..Although it does have some stunning architecture from the small areas I did see..
Sadly on this visit could not go inside the main cathedral because of a private event we could only go to the crypt and the gardens but for a mere £5 it was worth it. You still get to see the stunning architecture of the cathedral from the outside and the crypt has lots of great things to see with such a stunning herb garden. I would recommend that you always check for events before you have you heart set on seeing the cathedral just in case but this was still a lovely option!
Visited twice in 2016 and again in 2019, just before covid. This is a must visit for anyone interested in History and Thomas Beckett. I really enjoyed the crypt as it was so peaceful. I had to remind myself again and again that I was in the middle of a city. The gift shop is fantastic and stocks a variety of products. I bought myself letter sealers and a number of informative books. I find its useful that the gift shop can be visited independently without going in the cathedral, so if you have forgotten to buy something you can return another day if you wish to continue shopping. I really enjoyed my visit. Ideal for a family visit.
Amazing experience. So much history and experienced guides who delight in imparting this history. We took a break after an hour or so and went for refreshments. Came back and spent another couple of hours there, a good way to see the Cathedral if you have time. Ticket allows you to return again during the year of issue, excellent value.
Huge space around the cathedral and within. Very unique both in its history and architecture. Worth visiting if you have never been. Huge gardens, multiple inner yards - a lot of space to explore the history of the place
This Cathedral is a must see. The 1400 year old gem holds the prints of its history. So much to explore so much to take in. I am still amazed of the architecture of this beauty.
I loved the cathedral.I dont agree with people having to pay to enter a church though. I though it was quite expensive at £14.But I paid and visited, as it is a very iconic place to visit. Full of our history.
Lucky to have visited during a concert rehearsal and viewed the Cathedral with an epic orchestra & choir backing. Such a treat! Absolutely massive Cathedral full of history even for a non religious person as myself the architecture & stained glass are particular highlights. Tickets with gift aid donations are valid for a year of return visits.
It was chilly but sunny weather. Beautiful cathedral, incredibly built and decorated. We had a great historical time and enjoyed. If you do gift aid when you buy the ticket, you can have 1year anytime visiting ticket. Inside out side it took around 2hours for us. It’s worth to pay and visit. Great 👍
Despite major renovations, much of this medieval treasure can be explored. Access is free if you carry a congregation membership card. We were very impressed with the new multimedia display and the display cases holding the communion containers.
Such a beautiful place to visit. I would highly recommend and suggest you dont skip it. The atmosphere and interior design is flawless (especially the stained glass windows). The building is really big so you can easily take over an hour to explore.Theres plenty of knowledgeable staff onsite for you to go on a tour or talk to them. I would love to visit again when Im next back in Canterbury.
Unfortunately when we visited (January 2022there was a lot of scaffolding both outside and inside the cathedral. This didnt stop us enjoying the experience though. This place is steeped in history and, really, one day is not enough to take it all in. Luckily for your £14 entrance fee, you are allowed to visit for a full year. We intend going later in the year when the outside scaffolding is due to come down. We joined a free tour about royal tombs and it was fascinating, telling the history of both Edward the black Prince and Henry the fourth and others. The crypt is amazing too. If you look carefully on the front, you may notice new stone carvings of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
Amazing cathedral. Inside is spectacular. Bit pricey to get in- £14 per person, but we’ll worth it.
Beautiful building with incredible stained glass windows and stunning architecture. Very helpful and knowledgeable guides enhance your visit with titbits of information about the history of the cathedral. I would highly recommend a visit to this amazing place.
Beautiful, historical building, steeped in history and faith. Mixture of old and modern sculptures and stained glass. Well worth a visit. The grounds are worth a visit too.
STUNNING Cathedral! The very first Ive been able to visit while in England. To be in the presence of God and the deep rooted history is moving. The restorations have been well done and the preservation is wonderful.
Beautiful cathedral! We walked around and saw some of the most beautiful details making up this cathedral. Some of the internal walking guides were available to provide further information or answer any questions, which was useful.I do want to point out that most of the cathedral is under renovation both from the outside and inside, with scaffoldings blocking the view. Was it worth £14 per person? Absolutely not!
I have mixed feelings about here. There is no question that the architecture here is brilliant, and with the older remains behind the main cathedral you can really get a sense of history here. There are a couple of issues at present howeverWhen I visited here a lot of the cathedral was covered in scaffolding, and even some internally as well, which meant I was not able to get a full experience. Also, as a disabled person using a mobilty scooter I was able to access a fair amount of the cathedral, but there is a section that is only accessible for disabled people by a small lift which will not accommodate a mobility scooter which was disappointing.
All the staff are very welcoming and friendly, all are happy to answer any questions you have, as for the building. My timing was pretty good as the renovation work has moved on fairly well. There is still some scaffold on parts of the exterior, and some of the interior roof structure is covered. The rest of the building is incredible, and like any building of this age it is crammed with history. The windows are beautiful, the sculptures and memorials are stunning. Definitely worth a visit and nestled in the middle of a gorgeous part of Canterbury.
Lovely stained glass windows. You must really admire the effort it took to build such a building as well as the time. It looks big from the outside but when you go in it is vast. The grounds are kept well and there are guided tours that you can take or just walk around in your own time. Just make sure that you have a least an hour and a half.
What an amazing place. Grand and full of historical anecdotes. The place is maintained very well. It is one of the most beautiful Cathedral in England. The entry was £14 per adult and kids go free. Pets are allowed on the grounds but not inside the main cathedral.Ample parking on the main street. Good place to spend half a day with kids.
