Museum with displays of historic bushplanes, aerial firefighting equipment & a flight simulator.
They pack a lot of information into one space! I really liked how each plane had a booklet of information with the same categories in it, and you can move through the exhibits to gain insight as to how history unfolded, bringing it all together into a cohesive narrative. Clearly a lot of love and passion has been poured into this unique place.
This was a mix of great Bush plane history and very knowledgeable staff on insects! My favorite part was holding the insects & learning about them.
This attraction is definitely a hidden gem. We were very pleased with the value we got from our experience and would certainly recommend it as one of the best things to see in the Soo. The interactive exhibits were very cool as well as the open planes that you could go inside. The 3D wildfire film was fascinating and informative. Another pleasant surprise was the insectarium. We got to hold bugs and see other cool creatures like chameleons. If you have any interest in planes whatsoever, this is a great spot to check out!
Surprisingly diverse collection of airplanes, with some you can enter and sit on. The 3D film about firefighting is also interesting. Great place to visit for aviation enthusiast.
Neat little museum to go to if you end up in Sault Ste. Marie. Lots for the kids too!!!
Was a great museum. Beautiful planes. Enjoyed the wildfires 3d show.Highly recommend if youre stopping in town.
I enjoyed this place. I spent about 2 hours going through the exhibit. But you could easily double that time if you read all the displays. Enjoy d the water bomber movie.
I loved seeing the bush planes that I had only read about. The movie on forest fires was terrifying realistic and informative. I visited on a quiet day and had lots of time to climb into some of the planes and wander about.
We arrived at 3 pm and were quite pleased with what we were viewing, even watching a short film. Unfortunately the museum closed early at 4 pm as according to a rude staff member a staff meeting was to be held at that time. If the museum was closing before the 6 pm time it would have been nice to be told that by the person taking our admission fee. Outside of that the planes and displays were awesome, but the staff seemed unconcerned with our presence there.
This was an amazing collection of Bush planes. The Wild Fires movie was very interesting and educational. Lots of educational material.
Great exhibits of Bush planes, their evolution, use and history. Theres also an insect museum as a part of the facility. This place offers something for the whole family
The museum is a great place to go for the afternoon. You have to take a look at the bugs and butterflies they have on display both those in collections and those that are alive. Dont miss the firefighting 4D video. Lots of planes to explore and even a fire tower.
The 3D film of fighting forest fires was exciting! As well as numerous airplanes (some of which you can enter), there is an interesting insectarium with many live species in glass display cases. The man who cares for them was very personable, knowledgeable and informative. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Been here several times and its always good. They change and add things. This day was the 75th anniversary event for the Beaver floatplane. Live bands, refreshments, real nice.
I went to a wedding reception it was held in to back of the heritage center and they opened up the hangar door, the weather was perfect for it. Smokers are usually segregated but it was nice to be able to drink and have a cigarette in the vicinity it was just like the good old days.
What a great space for learning. Used for many community functions. Dynamic displays. Attentive staff. Well worth the price of admission. Also very reasonable $. Partnered with Science North and Entomica. Top notch family outing.
I lived in the Sault most of my life and never have gone here. It is worth the visit based on what you pay. The staff is friendly and you can tell they enjoy what they do.
This museum is amazing! I cant recommend it enough! They have a lot to do here. Its jam packed with activities for kids and adults.
Its a fun place to explore and neat to see all the different planes. A lot of the interactive things had broken or missing components though, so that was disappointing. We spent under an hour here with two kids, so the $30 admission for two adults was a bit too pricey for the experience.
A super fun place to go if you are in the Soo area. Great educational materials, awesome displays, very interactive. And very kid friendly! Lots of fun games and things for children as young as 1 to enjoy.
Pretty fun for the kids. Neat planes and historical bush related info. bugs exhibit is really neat, kids like it.
Great place, really good film on how they tackle bush fires. Loads (too much for my brainof info on everything to do with the planes, fires and history. Nicely broken down and displayed. Highly recommend. One tip would be to explain why the bugs are there, that was a bit random to me.
Incredibly interesting museum for all ages
Not very large but quite awesome. as a Torontonian I got a lot of knowledge how the remote area peoples life.
Nice little museum with old heritage De Havilland aircrafts like Otter, Beaver and other small airplanes. Water Bomber was the most exciting plane out of all. Kids had a lot of fun checking out the airplanes. You could hop onto some of the planes and check out the cockpit cabin so that was really exciting for kids. There was also a short 3D movie on the water bomber which kids really liked. There were simulator games for kids to fly the planes on screen. Overall it was a great experience!CL
A great museum to go to in Sault Ste Marie! I loved that you could go inside some of the planes. They were lots of interactive elements and videos at most planes. The 3D forest fire movie was great as well. I also loved the insectarium! We learned so much about insects and I even got to hold a lot of bugs.
Kinda ok place for non museum lovers. You can get to see old planes and that definitely surprises you.
Great museum. Lots of interactive exhibits for the kids to learn about flight and planes. Real planes that you can climb in an experience. But the Insect area was my personal favorite. Staff was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and interested in engaging patrons. Will be back!
Nice museom : inside there are mainly airplanes and entomolog section.Ticket are not cheap was 15$ for adult + tax
This was awesome! Came here with my brother and his son. They really put a lot in here! Cool old planes, some you can go inside and other you cant. Little 3D cinematic experience which was really cool. Good for all ages!
Great place to see classic Canadian bush planes and forestry aircraft. Nice location next to the river. Very friendly staff. Excellent quality clothing in gift shop.
Amazing raw museum where you can touch planes and sit in cockpits
Great museum, lots to see for both adults and kids. Unique and fun, nice gift shop too. Probably one of the better activities in town.
Actually going inside the planes was pretty cool. My boys loved it. My favourite activity was the insectarium. I could have stayed in there all day playing with the bugs.
Absolutely fun place to visit with kiddos. The insect exhibit is nice. The short documentary is amazingly well made too. Will totally recommend as a thing to do in SSM.
Lovely and clean museum! My favourite parts were the wildfire and biodiversity exhibits. Didn’t catch the wildfire movie but I’m excited to come back for another event!
This is an amazing place to visit with your kids. This place offers great different things to do and enjoy. From pass wars planes to some old cars, as well as some simulators and an amazing insectary.
Was a great stop in our travels. Staff are super friendly and informative. I was able to discuss the inner workings of the aircraft engine dyno with one of the volunteers I was also very impressed with the provided rest rooms definitely the cleanest ones I have ever seen.
Very unique museum displays. Great for a wide range of ages. Plenty of interactive displays to keep the younger kids entertained as well as informative and interesting displays for the older crowd.
A nice pleasant surprise!Well maintained place with lots of activities for kids. My kids absolutely loved it, we found this place fascinating too. Don’t miss the 3D movie. An absolute gem and a big surprise was a small section of Bugs and Insects, the keeper was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He showed us every single bugs and insects in every single container that they have, even took some out from the backroom. We love the stick bugs and the leaf bugs. We ended up spending talking to him over half an hour about insects. Our kids got fascinated by them too. Some impressive insects and creepy crawlies they got there.
This museum does a fantastic job of explaining the importance and history of small aircraft that use water as a runway or resource. There are loads of fun activities for young kids and lots of cool, complicated engineering stuff for adults to geek out on. I only spent an hour there but if you can, allow at least two or three. Also, the insect museum was an unexpected bonus! Small, but cool!
$13 per adult, $4 per child was very fair for such a great museum. It gives a comprehensive history of the bushplanes and their integral role in the great Canadian North. The 3D Bush Fire movie was very immersive and exciting. The people in the bug exhibit to the side were very patient and knowledgeable. I highly recommend it.
One of the attractions in Sault Ste. Marie, which will interest both young and old. Many well preserved aircraft and exhibits depicting the life in the Canadian north. Very educational and entertaining.
What a fun place for both adult and kids. I went there with my wife probably 12 years ago and just went back this past Aug (2019with my 2 boys. They had a great time going in every plane they could, the interactive movies and talking to each from the fire tower. We had to pull them out for dinner after over 4 hours there. Plus, the staff were so fun and informative to talk too as we let our boys roam. Highly Recommended.
Wow, this is an amazing museum. You can touch and climb and play and see the planes from the inside as well. There is a 3D movie theatre and a hugh kids zone with even video games. Admission fee is more than acceptable. Really worth to visit.
A cool museum showcasing past and present bushplanes used in the Canadian wilderness. The bushplanes are used for transporting people, supplies, fighting forest fires. There are many planes to see, some you can go inside. A couple of short movies are also available.
We drive 6 hours from Muskegon, MI just to visit the Centre. If you are an aviation buff, then this is a place you have to see. Recommended that you plan 2-3 hours to go through everything and see the movies. Great job from the staff and volunteers.
My son loved it. Its a little run down and a couple of the little game / displays broken. But it was cool to see and get in some old planes. Theyve got two small movie theaters with 4D which is cool. An old replica of the Watchtower this is cool for the kids. In some of the educational displays are pretty awesome Interactive. You can spend a couple of hours there. I will go back again when Im in the area.
This was one of the best put together air museums Ive ever been to. We were visiting from the States, and everyone in town told us to be sure to visit this place. It did not disappoint. Plenty for adults and children of all ages and interests to see. Some of the planes are been set up to sit in. They had one expert on hand that my husband got to know quite well who had very superior knowledge on the use of these beautiful aircraft! If you are in the Sault for more than just a few hours, dont miss this gem!
Great place for anybody who likes aviation!Lots of planes were open to see the cockpits, and while this museum seems aimed largely at school groups, its a great change from boats and ships if you are in the area! Lots of hands on items help to make this much better than many locations where you just look.
