If I could give six stars out of five I would. Everything was perfect and the friendly and attentive staff took our experience from good to great. There are stairs up to the rooms, but you dont have to carry your bags. Its an utterly delightful hotel in a great location. Local knowledge freely and happily offered was a huge help in making our holiday one to remember. And there is cake at 5pm every day!
We made a great choice to stay here. Welcomed warmly by owners on arrval and other staff are very kind and helpful. The interior spaces are very elegant and refined. Breakfast is in cozy restaurant and has many delicious choices. Will definitely choose to stay here again for next Penang visit.
Very nice heritage hotel with common areas for relaxing and gathering. Room is spacious and clean. Toiletries is a famous brand that I like. Breakfast will only be freshly made once we order which hot and tasty. The night shift concierge staff is very caring & helpful who suggested lots of sightseeing places.
I cannot rate Campbell House or the management & staff highly enough! Its an absolute gem tucked into the hustle & bustle of Georgetown. The hotel is a beautifully styled boutique building that looks & feels old world & authentic. The location is perfect 👌Check in was easy & included a welcome drink and an extensive overview of all the things to do while in Georgetown. We got the full run down on the best places to visit while staying in Penang. When we were shown to our rooms we also got a quick tour of the hotel which included the library, reading area and the beautiful terrace area on the top floor. Perfect places to chill after busy days strolling around Georgetown. When booking, I had mentioned that we would be celebrating our anniversary while we stayed with them & on entertaining our room we were treated to towel swans on our bed which was very nice. :)The room itself was perfect. Old worldly yet with all the modern conveniences needed to ensure a pleasant stay. The pictures dont do it justice Im afraid!!! Mini fridge, espresso machine, hair dryer : all the mod cons...The hotel has an Italian restaurant on the ground floor & serves breakfast, however we didnt get to try either on this visit, as we were trying all the local foods. Next time !!The hotel has a no shoes policy upstairs, which reduces noise & dirt. Great idea ! Everyone just leaves them in a small shoe rack on the stairs. There was a DVD player in the room & stacks of DVDs in the library to borrow - perfect if you fancy a wind down to a busy day !Im sure Im forgetting loads, but cant recommend Campbell House enough!
Campbell House scores 5* for everything - Cleanliness, Hospitality, Bed comfort (omg the best bed Ive stayed in whilst travelling through Malaysiaand location. Its slap bang in the middle of Georgetown which makes it extremely accessible for key destinations nearby.CH does luxury impeccably. The small thoughtful touches that make the stay enjoyable, such as branded bathroom products and a lovely slice of cake that they offer complimentary to your room every day is super touching. Plus, as others have mentioned, they offer 3 pieces of clothing ironed and returned to your room free of charge. These are the facilities that ultimately make it feel luxury and provided an unforgettable experience for myself and my partner.Overall, Id highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who would like to stay here, its perfect for couples and I guarantee youll have the best nights sleep of your lives.
Amazing and wonderful heritage hotel. Outstanding service.
In short, this is a must stay here. Leave the kids at home and treat yourself. Brilliant location for everything.Checkin, felt frosty the lady on reception complained my wife gave the wrong arrival time, the driver had been waiting at the airport since the morning, reception did not handle this well. My wife communicated the change of flight time. Four times she confirmed the flight leaves Jakarta at, I was surprised they didnt Google the flight number. We put this agressive welcome down to a bad day. Then watched our luggage be hoisted up through the hotel. This is when you notice how well kept the hotel is immaculate. This level of detail can be seen in each room not just well decorated, but art work selected for its beauty, in keeping with the period, even the telephones are a wonderful touch. A huge bed, lovely bathroom, top quality products for hair and body. Large TV, with curtains that block out the light and windows that block out the noise of the outside world. Air con works well. This place provides a sanctuary for rest.We contacted the front desk once for water, twice for a problem with the safe, both issues dealt with quickly. The service at breakfast is a bit hit or miss, if only they wrote down your order they would not need to keep checking what you ordered. Its NOT like that in the evening, the team for dinner is exceptional.I would definitely come back.
Good stay good Italian food. Great taste and good environment.
I had dinner Italian restaurant, food is fine n services good, ambience cozy.
The Hotel Downgraded Our Room Quietly, Careless on Guests Personal DataWe booked a Deluxe Superior room located on second floor. During checked in, we were being presented a room on first floor. The staff said our room type located on both floors. We reluctantly accepted the arrangement as the staff made us believe that was the same room type just located on lower floor. But later we found out ourselves our room was indeed being downgraded. We raised this issue to the booking platform and get a refund on the price difference via the platform. The hotel keeps copies of guests ICs and only crossed on it after we request to.A deposit of RM500 still on-hold for more than a week after check-out. No slip is issued. Had to call the bank and hotel to follow up.Other facts about this hotel: There is a no shoes policy, but the hotel is lack of proper setup to let guests take off and put on their shoes comfortably, and that spot of entryway is a bit dirty due to everyone take off/put on their shoes there, we sometimes had to step into our shoes with dirty barefeet.Despite these, the room was good with comfortable bed, staffs were generally polite and informative.TIPs for those who want to give this hotel a try: Pay a little more for a room on second floor to avoid tramping footsteps sound over your head. Know the room type and floor you pay for. Good Luck!
Great place to stay in the centre of Penang. Excellent service and really lovely rooms
Very beautiful hotel. Extremely clean. However, if u want to dine in you better make a reservation as the restaurant was packed when we visited.the duplex suite was beautiful. Fantastically decorated. Vintage and heritage feeling. Will visit here again.
Truly outstanding service! We had a wonderful stay together in one of their loft rooms. Five stars!
Campbell House was such a wonderful place to stay in Georgetown, Penang. From the minute we walked in, the staff were lovely and helpful. We stayed in "The Loft" room which was beautiful with a lounge as you walk in the door and the bedroom and bathroom up in the loft (essentially a two story room). There is no elevator, so as long as you dont have mobility issues, this place is so good. Its also in a great central location in Georgetown. We loved Campbell House and Penang and wed have no hesitation coming back to stay. The restaurant that adjoins the hotel (Il Bacaroalso serves the most delicious (and authenticItalian food. The service was wonderful and the food divine. Breakfast was included as part of our room rate and was also served a la carte at Il Bacaro. Cant say enough about Campbell House except...stay there!
Team was very friendly and helpful (e.g. advice on what to do, where to go), ready to go extra mile to suggest things that we could consider checking out. Rooms well-equipped with amenities such as the toiletries and hairdryer. Environmentally-friendly in their consideration as well. Going the extra step to supply rooms with fresh bakes for tea time daily!Interesting way they use to lift your luggages up to your rooms, is a great fun touch to the place. Rooms were beautiful with local vibes.
this hotel is the best location especially you plan to travel in heritage zone. Beautiful room, Great Staff, Love Special Drink and They offers Nespresso and also fresh milk. They serve continental breakfast not buffet but tatse is good.Cons:- I think deposit is too high (500RM)
Great place to rest in Georgetown. A tastefully preserved building and good dining.
Great historic boutique hotel that is beautifully decorated. The staff are friendly and helpful. Location is wonderful, directly in the historic center.
The best experience I have ever had staying at a hotel. Highly recommend for anyone wishing to explore Georgetown and wishing for a homely base to return to. 10/10 experience for being looked after, cant wait to return!
Honestly, everything was perfect : staff, breakfast, room, localisation…One of the best guest house we have ever done in Asia. I highly recommend this peaceful place !
What memorable experience. The owners are lovely, the staff are super helpful with any queries a traveller may have. We also had to leave early a couple of days to the hospital for medical check ups. The night watchmen were super helpful in assisting us. Breakfast is Western style. I was hoping for some Asian flair. But it was good and filling. Next time I would opt for no breakfast and only eat ala carte when I dont want Asian style breakfast as there are lots of options 1-5 minutes walk from the hotel.
Stayed at CH for three days with friends of mine. Every moment was precious, and we’ve never experienced such warm service before. Thank you so much to Nardya and the amazing staff for an experience we’ll cherish forever! We will definitely come back next time we’re in Penang :)
The relaxed reception may have seemed in keeping with Penangs shorts and sandals laidback vibe, but it disguised a real commitment to service and a luxury experience. At no point in our 2-night stay did we feel that we had been forgotten or ignored, and the owners were always happy to chat - about the hotel itself, to make recommendations for food nearby, or just to share everything about their backgrounds, relationships to Penang, and so on. All very friendly, and incredibly professional in making people feel relaxed and welcome. The lovely touch of hoisting your luggage upstairs on a pulley was really cool - it makes checking in an experience to remember. The understated luxury touches were awesome - particularly the free ironing service - 3 items of your choice during your stay, pressed and brought back to your room. This is the sort of service that people will actually want, and we appreciated it immensely.Theres a great little living room on the first floor with books, DVDs, and stuff where you can just chill, and a cool rooftop terrace where you can enjoy the Georgetown atmos without overheating.Theres a welcome shoes-off rule for anywhere above the ground floor, which means the beautiful dark-wood staircase and floors can be enjoyed fully, without damaging them. It might feel inconvenient at first, but it encourages guests to adopt the Penang laidback attitude - to ditch the lace-ups, and get your flip-flops on. It also means everywhere upstairs actually is, rather simply looking, clean. The rooms are all individually decorated, with their own personality. Our bed was insanely comfortable: huge frame, cool bedsheets, with nicely angled mirrors for the romantically inclined! The place is beautifully and authentically restored (our bathroom had yellow tiles from the original English manufacturer, and youll see wrought iron from Glasgow too, throughout the hotel). The high ceilings in the room mean that the fan/aircon combo is never too hot, or too cold, but just right. Our room was also suprisingly quiet, with soundproofing on point; a nice touch was the wooden blinds that open to reveal stained glass, so you get a kaleidoscope of colours when you open them. You know, if you dont want to look at the actual street. The restaurant downstairs is also good, and reasonably priced considering the insane variety of high-quality food available elsewhere. Italian restaurants in Malaysia tend to be overpriced the more authentic they try to keep it, because sourcing ingredients can really rack up. You could eat the fried seafood plate cheaper at a hawker stall, but this felt authentically Italian in cooking and presentation, and combined with the objectively brilliant gluten-free pasta they use (this is the only place we discovered in town that actually understands the importance of gluten-free/coeliac disease), it made eating Italian food in Penang the sensible option. Penang is famously judgemental about food (and rightly so), so the sight of tables full of Chinese aunties eating there was very reassuring.I honestly cant find a single thing to fault about Campbell House, and itll be my default place to stay in future. For my money, this is better than 7 Terraces, E&O - and forget all the overpriced, overhyped places up in Batu Ferringhi.
Warm, friendly staff - especially the owners who made us feel welcome after a long drive up from KL during the recent Hari Raya break. Rooms were pristine and our minibar was stocked with tasty treats every day. Location is excellent - you can pretty much use the hotel as a base to go around the main areas of Georgetown. Highly recommended and would stay here again for sure.
By far the best place to stay in Penang. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. We were given a welcome drink so delicious we could have drank an entire pitcher of them. Since we arrived a great deal earlier than check in, they held our bags for us and even recommended some things to do in the surrounding area to pass the time while they got our room ready. We took their recommendation and were not disappointed! When we arrived back, we were shown to our room. The first things you notice in this hotel is the historic feel. They have done an excellent job making you feel like you’ve stepped back into another time when staying at a hotel was supposed to be a personal experience not just a place to lay your head. We felt right at home. The room had antique furniture, beautiful finishes, and luxury bath products. The hotel has done away with single use plastics so all of the products are full sized, it is a nice touch to an already luxurious experience. The room was spacious with beautiful soft light coming in from the colorful glass window panes. Our room came with coffee, tea, glass bottle of drinking water, and a delicious iced lemon tea…all replaced daily. If you have the opportunity to stay in the Rose Room we highly recommend it. Breakfast at the hotel is an experience unlike any other property we’ve stayed at. It is served down stairs, the restaurant has an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in a movie. The food is unparalleled in quality and you will not leave hungry, we can assure you of that. From fresh fruit, to home made breads, to main courses that rival some of the best breakfast restaurants we’ve been to. This is by far the best hotel breakfast we have had or will have. In closing, this is a must stay off you are coming to Penang! We can’t wait to come back!
Superb from start to finish - Campbell House is a beautiful hotel in a perfect location in George Town. The rooms are stunning, the breakfasts are excellent, and there are nice small touches like a private roof terrace for guests, and cakes and treats delivered each day. They even made us breakfast to take to the airport despite leaving at 6am on our last day. What really makes Campbell House special, though, is the welcome and personal touch from the owners Nardya and Roberto, and the whole staff. They made us feel so at home, always stopped to chat and see how we were doing, and were full of fantastic recommendations and information about the area.
one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in, room was great, the local area I can wander around all day
I have written less than 5 Google reviews out of my own will over the years but I really wanted to express how lovely our stay at Campbell House was.The architecture, interior design, and most importantly, the people gave my partner and I a very homely and warm feeling throughout our stay.Nardya and Roberto, the owners of the place, gave us very helpful and relevant recommendations of places to visit upon our arrival (despite having waited for us for a few hours!). We could absolutely feel their enthusiasm and hospitality. We also had the privilege of meeting Mr Lim, who was mainly in charge of keeping the place safe and secure for the stayers. Being genuine and down-to-earth, he also kindly gave us recommendations of his favourites around the area, catering to our background and preferences, and tirelessly woke up in the middle of the night to make sure we were well taken care of. We also had the pleasure of brief interactions with a few other staffs and they no doubt reinforced our positive impression of the place. Also, the design and architecture of the place, which was put together in an organic and fitting way, was also very unique and truly made us feel like we were immersing in the local culture.Campbell House was definitely an important part of what made our mere 2-days stay in Penang absolutely memorable and we are even considering a return visit to Penang just for this place! Highly recommended. Thank you for the lovely time, Campbell House team :)
I never give all 5 stars for a hotel in most cases unless they are truly deserving and in this case this hotel is quaint spacious and very deserving of even more than 5 stars the people are fantastic, the food is great, the rooms are spacious, the air conditioning works, everything in the bathroom was operational and the price is on par with the areas less swanky hotels. For my Asian and Japanese friends, you will absolutely love the fact that outdoor shoes are not allowed on the guest room floor above the staircase. That means that this hotel is truly truly clean and bug-free which is very difficult to do in this environment.I will write a separate review for the restaurant shortly after Ive had a couple more meals there but the breakfast which was complimentary with the room was not a buffet it was a menu with proper proper breakfast including a fruit starter and I chose the eggs Benedict which was a variation of what youd expect what nonetheless extremely. Watch out for the coffee it is the real thing seriously, I dont wanna be crude but when I went to the toilet I smelled the coffee a second time!! This is not something bad this is something just amazing that you only get with really really good coffee.Weve stayed at over one dozen hotels and resorts in penang and by far this 1 has been the most charming and delightful.
Lovely hotel!Location: great location. Close to most of the attractions & street food in Georgetown.Breakfast: Their breakfast surprised me! So delicious!Only 1 con is the floor is thin and you can hear people walking around in their room (day/night).And be reminded there is no parking in this hotel. You have to park at roadside or other private parking zone (chargeable).
This is a very unique hotel situated in the heart of Georgetown. Absolutely adore its vintage style of style where each room is individually decorated with different retro furnitures. We were wow-ed at each room’s deco 😍 The staffs there are very friendly and helpful. They provide complimentary afternoon tea snacks each day - banana chocolate cake, strawberry panna cotta, butter cookies etc etc. There is also a great Italian restaurant downstairs. Tip: it’s encouraged to choose Deluxe Room instead of Standard Room as the standard room is quite small.
Havent had the chance to stay or eat here so far, but the staff here are so nice. Their building is very photogenic but they didnt stop people from dropping by for pics.
So glad that we booked this hotel, absolutely stunning. Love every piece of furniture and the ambience in this hotel. Staffs are friendly and helpful, restaurant serves great food, be sure to try out their Italian food which is located at G floor. The food was so great that we had dinner at the hotel 2 days consecutively. Location is perfect and walking distance to many attractions. The only downside to the hotel is parking. You’ll have to park by the roadside or walk further to a private parking zone. We stayed at The Loft (largest room @highest floorand water pressure gets really low in the morning. Our bedroom also didn’t have any socket available for phone charging, will have to unplug bedside lamp to charge our phone, which in turn makes our room dimmer (there are power tracks provide on the study table but you wouldn’t want to walk up and down the stairs to get to your phone).Nevertheless, great stay and would definitely come back again.
We were fortunate enough to stay in Campbell House for two weeks. It was the perfect spot for us to get situated in Penang. The boutique hotel is lovingly restored with each room individually decorated beautifully. We loved the location within walking distance to everything in Georgetown and the team in Campbell House took such good care of us, we left feeling like friends. To boot, Il Bacaro, the Italian restaurant is certainly the best western food in Penang! I can’t recommend staying here highly enough - from the gorgeous terrace and the daily deserts to the helpful staff, everything was just wonderful! We loved every moment!
The service is absolutely faultless! From the moment you arrive you are surrounded by smiling faces happy to assist. The hotel itself is beautiful. The renovation is of a very high standard. Bed is very comfortable and thanks to the double glazed windows you are assured of a peaceful night sleep. I particularly love the fact they have left the traditional stained glass and shutters and only complemented by the double glazing without taking away anything from the beautiful look.Highly recommend this hotel and we will be back!
Characterful boutique hotel with very friendly staff. Large and comfortable room. Easy walking to all Georgetown heritage sights. On-site Italian restaurant is excellent for breakfast and evening meals. A gem!
Absolutely loved our stay at the stylish Campbell House. We stayed for two nights, as part of a two-week trip around Malaysia. The location of the hotel was perfect, in the centre of Georgetown and nearby to many recommended restaurants and points of interest. The hotel staff were really helpful, giving us great tips and recommendations (including the free walking tour which we really enjoyed and a local dumpling place), which suited our short stay in the city. Our room was lovely, spacious and clean and was a pleasure to stay in. The hotel also has good communal areas, including a terrace. We did not have dinner or lunch in the hotel restaurant, but the breakfast was nice enough. You cant really find a better location and hotel to return to after spending a day exploring in the heat!
Second visit was as pleasant as the first. Beautifully restored building. Each room has its own old school charm. Loved the attention to detail. Double glazing ensures quiet. The standard of cleanliness is faultless. Perfect service with the friendly staff always ready to help. Great value. So much I could say but best you experience for yourselves…
