Caldeiras Vulcânicas in Ponta Delgada
Description
Privilege
So we felt the vibe and the service here were good, but I don’t think I personally would find the cozida (which is what we had come to trytasty at any restaurant. It’s an array of multiple kinds of meat in a stew cooked with geothermal heat. It made many of the meats taste a bit over or under cooked. They did have veggie and vegan options so I do wonder if they might be tastier to me personally. Call 24 hours in advance to get your cozida. Be wary that you might not like it no matter the restaurant. Also some of the food (soup and frieswere served to us kind of cold here. I think it was because we had arrived first to the dinner service.
MoreOut of the way (in Furnasbut a must-go restaurant in São Miguel! Its menu is an original selection of emblematic tastes using a delightful motif associated with the islands volcanism. Its staff is courteous and helpful, and its setting is both elegant and practical. It is in my top 5 restaurants on the island and the perfect place to end your day in style.
MoreGreat food, service was exceptional! 👌
TL;DR Mediocre food, definitely not worth the price. It was not apparent to us that we needed to order the one dish(cocidopeople come here for, 24 hours in advance, but ok... Mea culpa.Half the menu was unavailable when we went, and what we did order- pork ribs, octopus and some fried fish(not to be confused with the fish and chips, which was not availablewas just ok. Personally, Im accustomed to eating ribs that are tender, but these were still on the chewy side, although that could be local preference if Im playing devils advocate. The food took at least 45 minutes to arrive, and thats after I approached the counter to ask how much longer, at which point the server looked behind her and saw our food was already waiting there... I dont need to spell out how that made me feel about the service and attitude from the staff. What can I say about the food we were able to order... Its definitely not the best version of any of those dishes, especially the octopus. I was told earlier this week by a local in P. Delgada to go to another establishment, and I should have listened.
MoreWe tried Cozido here. So nice tasty food. Good atmosphere restaurant and value for money. So friendly staff👍
MoreGood food and good servive
Delicious. Had a terrific dinner (grilled octopus for me and fork beard for partnerand the wine recommendation was spot on.
MoreI couldn eat at the restaurant because it was fully booked, BUT, right next to the restaurant they also have a small cafe called Café Caldeiras. The guys that tend the bar there are suuper nice, they do good coctails and drinks are very cheap. Also, you can rent a pool table. Very nice place!!
MoreReservations are necessary 24 hours ahead to get the food cooked in the caldeira. We therefore had to order different food from this restaurant and it was decent. The pork chop was good, the risotto was salty.
MoreMy family and I went today and ordered 6 different main courses. Each of them was delicious and generous. Amazing vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options. It’s a must in the area.
MoreVegetarians who enjoy flavor: BEWARE and STAY AWAY! The volcano-cooking is an overpriced novelty and the food is mostly tasteless, like mediocre hospital food before it’s puréed. We had a mixed veg volcano dish. For the price, you’re better off eating bread and salad anywhere else. Servers were mostly absent and seemed depressed. Truly and deeply disappointing. Though I eat meat, it made me very sympathetic to the challenges my partner has in finding decent veg food.
MoreGreat restaurant, service was good and quick. I am not a fan of cosido de fournas even though i was curious about it and really wanted to try. it is good, but i didnt taste this volcanic sent that everyone talks about. Probably my palate is not fine enough. The pasta was delicious though
MoreThe staff and the ambiance are great! The food was good. We did not like the ground cooked food. It tasted bland to us. However the other food we had was great. The Greek salad, and the kids had fried chicken strips. Which they ate all of! The desert was also very good. Chocolate tart and the kids each had chocolate Moose which was super chocolately.
MoreOne of our favorite meals on the trip! Call ahead to reserve the famed Furnas cozida. It’s a busy spot so make a reservation!
MoreNice place, amazing food! It is worth a visit!
Food was fine and good value. Could easily be 5 stars…so what went wrong? The waitress was unfriendly and insisted we hadn’t ordered enough. Somewhat reluctantly we took her “advice” and ended up with far too much food. A pity 🤷♂️
MoreWe were looking for an upscale, nice sit down place in the area and this easily fit the bill. Food was characteristically local yet modern and palatable for all taste buds. Listen to the waiters recommendations!
MoreI will start off saying the green wine and tuna salad were good. The passionfruit soda was amazing. The reason Im giving one star is because the cozido stew smelled horrible and tasted exactly that unfortunately. When I asked if it would be proportionately 1/2 beef and 1/2 cow what we got was mostly blood sausage, pork feet, some beef but mostly pork. My partner only eats beef.Others may find this dish enjoyable as a food preference but for my partner and I it was inedible and turned us off from ordering anything else.It appeared a different server or perhaps the cool came by our table and with quite an unfriendly face and demeanor she asked us if everything is okay and we told us that honestly we didnt like the food. It didnt appear she liked the answer. We took another look at the menu and ordered the chocolate torte. One odd thing we found is that someone new would come to our table and never saw the first server again. We hope we didnt offend anyone. We just wanted to have a good experience in Furnas.Lastly, we were expecting an offer to replace the stew or take the item off our bill completely but none of this was done. In other restaurants if Ive ever had a bad experience with a meal there would be a discount on the bill automatically or free dessert at the very least.
MoreFriendly staff, the food is not very good. Definitely not worth the trip. The vegetarian option I would not recommend.
MoreWe waited for a long time for food, even though we had a reservation. The side dish to our steak was brought to us 20 minutes later, so the steak was already cold. The food was great, but you cant enjoy it that way. At least they sincerely apologized and offered us a drink for compensation.
MoreGreat food, great service! Even when accommodating unusual requests like hot water for heating baby food or last minute chocolate tart take away orders :)
MoreThe geothermal cuisine is very neat to try - make sure you reserve at least 24hrs in advance as it takes time to cook underground. That being said, the dish itself doesnt taste that particularly different than a regular stew and is a tad dry and lacks flavour. But if you like trying new foods, Id still recommend. The portions are huge! Two people can easily finish the one person serving.
MoreDelicious food for a good price. The amount of food is very geenerous and they also offer take away in case you cannot finish it. Definitely would go there again!
MoreVery good restaurant with local cuisine ! The most famous dish of the city is the "cozido", a stew of different meats (chicken, pork, beef, chorizo& vegetables, cooked in a pot under the ground thanks to geothermal energy!
MoreBiggest portion of cozido I have ever seen, even had some leftovers to make a shakshuka in the coming days. Great service, so well priced. One of the best eateries in Furnas
MoreCozido was number one on our “must eat” list while tripping through Portugal and the Azores. So the only questions were where and when. We did the day before reservation requirement and spent a delightful afternoon at Parque Terra Nostra before wandering over to check out the hot springs pools (highly recommendthat are a short walk from the restaurant. Although we are huge stew/goulash/boiled dinner fans this was our rookie experience with Cozido so we cannot do like comparisons. What we can do is say the meal was thoroughly enjoyable. The pork, chicken, cabbage, collards, potatoes and light spices harmonized quite well and scooping rice into the leftover broth was a nice finish. I’ve become a fan of Azorean blood sausage during my visit so it’s appearance in the blend was a welcome presence. As a side note we did the Bruschetta as an app and the interesting take on it just may have made it the star of the show. It came on a toasted Lavada with a beautiful slice of fresh tomato. Between the two was a wonderful rich and soft (I’m guessing localcheese with a touch of spice. A perfect pairing to opening a bottle of red. The service is good and the pricing was in line with dinner for two at a nice restaurant in Ponta Delgada.
MoreVery simple place, tradiotional beef stew definitely isnt worth to order - lot of meet without any orginality and any freshnes, taste as usual stew, nothing from "taste of ground". If order, than portion for 2 will be enough for at least 4 persons.
MoreGreat atmosphere, great food, great service. Chef Paulo is wonderful!! Everyone speaks English and reservations is always a good idea to be safe!
MoreFinally something else than the burger or steak with fries you can find on every corner of the island. The octopus with patatoes was tasty but you have to like garlic and oil, because it is bathing in it. The fried fish was a bit flat in taste tough and the orange cheesecake was just way too overwhelming with a super sweet sauce and crumble bottom with flavours of caramel.
MoreDelicious! We tried the cozido for one (we were lucky and got one without reservationand the steak. Both were awesome! The cozido unfortunately was disproportionate and simply too massive for us. We couldn’t finish it and sadly had to leave more than half in the plate. A smaller portion would be more than enough :and we would be happy to pay the same price! All in all, a great experience. You might want to reserve your cozido or feijoada in advance though.
MoreFood is a highly overrated imo. Ordered the most popular dish called "Cozido" which is cooked using underground heat, and it still possessed that chunky smell of sulfur. Not my cup of tea, but of you like Sulfur-flavoured food then go straight ahead.
MoreGreat vegan option on the menu even though theres not many this was a great dish. Wine was delicious and staff were lovely! Only thing was you had to walk though the pub to get through which was a bit strange and loud, especially with the football on.
MoreI wasnt sure which place should I choose to try famous cozido, and I am glad I came here. Portion was massive, I dont think even two people can eat what I got, everything was super tender and delicious. I hope I will come back here!
MoreDelicious food, you certainly wont be disappointed in that sense and the service was also really lovely. The restaurant is a bit bland though and so was the wine but at least they had plenty of vegetables on the menu! I had a vegetarian dish including lentil meatballs, zucchini spaghetti and a cocunut curry sauce which was just delicious. The portions were very big so I couldnt finish it but overall it was very pleasant.
MoreI have a very nice dinner after visit the furnas around the village.I couldn’t have dessert because I was really full but I saw them and they look yummy 🤤They also have a few vegetarian dishes which is amazing. ♥️
MoreNice restaurant with great vegan options. We had the vegan cozido with wonderful vegan starters (excellent soup, salads, home made french fries, olives). Very nice wine selection as well. Excellent price to value ratio paired with friendly service. Very much worth the drive to Furnas. We are looking forward to coming back!
MoreFirstly: we’ve been surprised in S . Miguel by how kind people are. In this restaurant they go even further by having a very customer-caring service and for ensuring you have a great experience.Secondly: we had the fish and chips and the cozido. Soon we realized that the cozido alone would have fed both of us (and more). It’s a very large portion. Order it for yourself at your own risk. It is definitely a must if you want to experience the typical Portuguese comfort food that evokes slow Sunday afternoons.
MoreVery good restaurant at least to eat the Furnas cozido, only plate we tasted. Nice people.
MoreI suggest this place to eat typical dish!Very professional waiter! They accept the voucher of 35€ give from the government of Azores! If you want to try the typical meat you have to tell them 24 h before!
MoreBeautiful place for a date dinner (quite fancy atmosphere). Prices are reasonable and waiters very polite
MoreThe food is really good. Bom cozido. The staff was very friendly too.
We had the vegetarian version of the local stew. Staff was nice and food was good, a good option when staying in Furnas.
MoreThe food was really good and presented in a different way. They do the traditional cozido, but you need to call the day before. As soon as you walk in the stairs you smell the amazing dishes. One of the best restaurants in Furnas.
MoreFantastic "Cozido das Furnas" (which you need to reserve 24h upfrontand excellent caramelized pineapple dessert. Great attentive staff and nice ambience.
MoreReally tasty food with touristic prices. The kitchen is a little bit slow.
The food cooked in "the ground" was just superb! Check if you need to pre book your food, we were lucky as others had cancelled their dinner. Highly recommended!
MoreWent there to try Cozido das Furnas. We have made a pre order and they have met our special requirements.Food was excellent. Really tasty!! Portion size is absolutely massive.Servers are very nice and friendly. However, they can be a little bit more attentive to the tables. A lot of the time it was hard to get their attention even though the restaurant was almost empty. Other than this everything was perfect
MoreService was phenomenal. Friend had a lot of allergies and they were very thorough. Also had cozido even though I did not make a reservation.
MoreIf I had 6 stars Id give it... Staff was friendly, funny and a great added value to this experience... The Cozido made with the geothermal heat was magnificent with no sulfur taste at all (I was a bit afraid of this). It was wonderfully tasty and it was really well served (we brought our leftovers home and had dinner from it)... Price was very adequate for the portions, we paid 12,50eur for a massive portion of Cozido. The blood sausage was magnificent... Great experience, plus, we got to see our Cozido being pulled from within the earth. Awesome! Oh by the way, reserve in advance, one day should suffice...
MoreDelicious food we had the Cod. For our surprise it was HUGE. My wife couldn’t finish hers. Service a bite slow but really friendly.
