Café Toui - Laotian restaurant in Louangphrabang, Laos
The food here is incredible! We had the Susi Pa (fishand the ginger beef for dinner as well as the beef and chicken noodles for breakfast. Cannot recommend enough, best local food we have had in Laos!
My boyfriend and I had the best meal here tonight. The chicken curry was genuinely one of the best curries I have ever eaten and my boyfriend had the spicy beef stir fry which he thoroughly. The gentleman serving also was also the chef and so so lovely and welcoming. This is our last evening in Luang Prabang and we are so sad we only found this place tonight as I would have come here every evening for dinner.
Toui is a nice guy with an upper scale local food restaurant. His twist on local dishes is something not to miss. Try the local sausage. Its completely different here than anywhere else.
Food was amazing. We had a tofu salad (best tofu Ive ever hadand a fish in red chilli. Really excellent.
Atmosphere is nice. Ordered the tasting menu - 120k. It took longer than Id like to wait for food to be served. You need minimum 2 people. So for 240k I would not say it was great value for money. The only dish we really enjoyed and thought was amazing was the yellow curry. The desert was also interesting. The rest was not really memorable. Also the toilet sink didnt have any clean towels left to use to dry my hands and had to use used ones which was disgusting.
I really enjoyed Cafe Toui, and I appreciate the creative, inspired, yet unpretentious approach to local ingredients. I had the sausages and chicken laap. While traditional Lao dishes, I think they were a bit special here. The room was simple and calm, and the service was kind and unobtrusive as well. One of my best meals in Luang Prabang.
Best meal I had in my 3 weeks in Lao! Delicious tofu salad, stir fried duck and grilled fish. Authentic Luoang Prabang recipes passed down from Mr. Touis mum and readily available for everyone. Very nice restaurant decor with great ambience. Definitely going back again!
Liked the mok pa (steamed fish in banana leavesbut wished it was more flavourful. Ka lee Gai was not bad though the chicken was a bit dry. Most disappointing was the "local crunchy salad" - it was really just a regular caesar salad with a sweet, eggy dressing. And there was no service to speak of. The dude was more interested in the anime on his phone - well, I would be too, but I didnt expect him to throw my change on the table even as I thanked him...
We were looking for Cafe Toui after hearing a foodie friend raving about it, and we found that it had moved and revamped the menu.We were eager to try and the food was so good that we came back again for our last meal before leaving Luang Prabang. The red duck curry with lychee was creamy, rich, and bursting with flavours; the steamed fish with custard wrapped in banana leaf is simply unforgettable. And don’t forget to try the Yum Salad, the presentation itself makes me want to eat salad every day, plus the taste of the sauce - creamy, eggy, surprisingly light, makes it a winner.Overall, a decently priced, high quality food, with lovely service. Thanks Toui!
Good service and the food arrived well paced. The waiter said the yam salad was small but it was actually quite large but we did not see any yams. The peanut and egg sauce was okay. We wanted the lemongrass prawns but they had run out, so we went for the grilled pork and beef platters. Both meats were flavourful and went well with their respective sauces but the meats were just too hard and difficult to chew. There were no locals, but several tables of tourists.Overall, the meal was okay. I would not say it is cheap - including a lime soda, it was around 200000 kip - but it did not break the bank either.
Centrally located, very friendly staff. Great variation of local cuisine. The quality of food also top. Strongly recommended.
Great flavours, service was quick. Fish with local herbs wraped in banana leaves were delicious. Duck curry with lychee and fresh spring roll great also. Recommended
Nice place. Clean, comfortable, good price. But be aware... if you order the pad thai... it aint pad thai. Its more like a soupy spaghetti. Taste is okay. But far from what I had hoped to eat.
Service was quick and staff very friendly. We had for dinner the duck curry with lychee, warm chicken salad and the veggie fresh spring rolls. All delicious! Prices are higher than on the country side but not overpriced at all
Very good food and nice place.Owner is welcoming and helpful.
Veggie curry and prawns with mushrooms were delicious. Decent portions. Nice atmosphere. The only thing we didnt like is the duck dish. The duck was overcooked. Everything else was tasty.
Solid food and generous portions at a low price. We arrived before the lunch crowd, so there were no issues with service.
Food was incredible, but as they got busier the service took a pretty big hit. They seemed to only have 2 or 3 staff working like 30 customers. But seriously, the food was amazing. And my group want spent around $10 which is wild.
Impressive food but the place is let down by poor service... We waited 20 mins just to get our menus. Two dishes were forgotten. Total mealtime: two hours. Be prepared for potential miscommunication due to lack of English of two of the waiters.
We came here twice thinking the first time was a fluke. Our first visit, the staff forgot one of our dishes and we were waiting an additional half hour before we realized they had never started cooking it. During our second visit, we were served someone elses food and the staff was insistent that we had ordered it until going back to the notes and realizing we had not. Next, we ask for sticky rice which is a basic component of Laotian food. We were informed that they were out of sticky rice before we saw them serve sticky rice 20 minutes later to three other customers who had just come in. communication was really the toughest part of this restaurant and we are partially to blame for having used Google translate to do most of our communication.
Good food, just feeling a bit disappointed after our second visit to Cafe Toui on our trip to Luang Prabang. We returned after a recommendation of the Chef Special from our friends who loved this place. We were enjoying the food and service when it just kind of stopped. We did not know if anything else was coming out. We weren’t able to get the staff’s attention for another drink. We waited for about 40 minutes, then we just decided to get the bill and leave. It was kind of weird, they simply just stopped coming over to us and we just decided to leave. Don’t know if we had more food coming, we should have based on cost of meal of 240,000 for two people. Went back to the night market and got some bread to fill us up. Yeah, just a bit bummed. There is good food though, don’t let this deter you from eating here, just our experience. Too bad, we will try somewhere else next time.
Good restaurant, Fair prices for the quality. I recommend!
Really enjoy the food here. Food is fresh and full of flavour. The fish dish and fresh rolls were delicious. Relaxed ambience and friendly staff.
Absolutely great food! Nice and full of flavour :-). We had the pumpkin curry, spinach in oyster sauce and black sticky rice. Everything was beautiful. And enough vegetarian options. Will go agai :-D
If you are heading towards Nam Khong River from Sisavangvong Road, youll spot Cafe Toui. Cafe Toui doesnt just serve coffee. It is a restaurant and a homestay. Before ordering our food, we were served a simple cocktail and some banana chips. We decided to have some Laotian sausages, grilled fish wrapped in banana leaves and a curry pumpkin. When the food arrived, we were so impressed by the presentation. The food was served on banana leaves in a large rattan basket, making the food more appetizing. All the food were flavoured with Laotian spices and herbs and tasted great. We liked all of them. A bit more expensive than some other restaurants but you are paying for better service and high quality food. The meal for the two of us cost us 160 000 kip.
The food here is really really good. Its a delight to sample different Lao dishes. Unfortunately the waiting staff isnt always the most attentive. Theyre all nice, but a bit too shy it seems and some orders took a long time. Overall its still a must go if youre in Luang Prabang and I always come back for the food, especially the Ping Pa!
Amazing restaurant !Here have Lao’s best food & good home stay
One of the best Laos style food in Luang Pra Bang, Highly recommended
At cafe toui you can find great food and great service. The food is really tasty and also the presentation is great. We sent there twice during our short stay in Luang Prabang. Its definitely a place to try if you want to experience the traditional Lao cuisine in a nice setting.
Great food! Tourist priced, medium-sized portions. Dishes start from $5 up. The staff speaks English and they have local dishes with a twist.
First wandered into this café because I wanted to escape the rain. I had a mango sticky rice and a Lao coffee. At the same time, I also read more reviews about this café, most of the reviews were overwhelming positive. So, I came back for dinner. I ordered a chef’s choice, where the Chef will choose six dishes for me, plus a dessert. Kind of like Omakase in a Japanese sushi shop. I loved every one of the dishes. As each of the dishes was served, I thought it was the last. It was perfect for sharing. The service was also great. It’s bit higher priced than what local Laotians eat, but it was good food. Owner is really hospitable and friendly.
I visited yesterday, after reading reviews online I thought thered be a wide variety of vegan choices but there were only a handful.I asked the waiters for vegan food but they didnt seem to understand.I enjoyed the pumpkin curry and free veggie chips they provided. If you are a carnivore Id recommend this place.
Nice, clean, diligent. Come early, relax and dishes come in their delicate time. Priced akin to the west. Curried chicken skewers, fish curry, black sticky rice and coconut/lime/cinammon iced dessert were lovely. Id sit inside, peaceful from road.
The food looked good but we didnt stay as there was nothing on the menu our 9 and 10 year old wanted to eat.Service was good. Decor nice. An indoor and outdoor area.
I’m glad I chose this place to stay for my LP vacation. Location wise, it’s great. Close to mount Phusi, night market, morning market, morning alm, Maekhong river stretch - all walkable. Room has good size, clean room/ towels with hair dryer, big bright bathroom with transparent roof to let natural light shine in. Small downside is aircon has bright green light when turned on and you could smell exhaustion gas if the room’s facing the street. So light sensitive people should bring the eye shade. Owner is very kind and helpful with all questions and help booking transports etc. He’s a chef. Breakfast has superb quality and we tried dinner. It was a hands down for quality and taste. Some might say it’s for non laos but I’d go to the street if i want just what exactly the locals eat. His food is adjusted so people who cannot take 100 chilies can enjoy. Most important is fresh, no msg, very high quality. I’d highly recommend the place.
We notified the owner that we were vegan / vegetarian. He produced an outstanding set of dishes. The freshest spring rolls, thick, flavorful yellow pumpkin curry along with brown sticky rice, and a tofu-mushroom mix steamed in banana leaves. The last dish arrived at the table as two aromatic hot packets. We unwrapped them with great anticipation.... Needless to say, we had no room for dessert.
Tasty food in tiny portionsThis restaurant is pleasant and clean. We came in a big group and our food was quickly served. The food was tasty but in very small portions. I ordered some curry-like dish which was delicious but kept me hungry because of the tiny portion they serve and my husband had the (really smallfish baked in banana leaf.If it werent for the prices and amount of food served, which were similar to restaurants in the same range, we would have ordered more food.
To be serious, really much lower excitement and quality than what ever in ur mind, I still had fun with lots of friend dinning together, but 5 of us, no body like it, I should give 2 star, but we all like the one waiter so he gains one more star. 1 woman can rarely speak English only.
The food here is simply spectacular and the best part is they are mostly local cuisine and original recipes. Definitely try their coconut fish curry noodles (ka thi pha that will simply blow you away. Wash it all down with Cafe lao (sweet milkor lao beer(dark). Ambience is great too, definitely recommended. Oh did I mention that its also a homestay?
Best meal Ive eaten in Southeast Asia in months!!!! So glad I checked this place out!!!! I got the tofu larp and it is just so perfect. Cant rave about it more. The restaurant is pretty fancy. The waiter even came and asked how my food was! When does that happen in Asia? Haha definitely recommend!
I saw this restaurant in lonely planet and Im so glad I took the recommendation as it was delicious. We ordered 2 of the veggie curries to share and they were phenomenal, so much so I felt compelled to write a review. Staff were so polite and lovely, it really is the best restaurant. I wish I was still in Luang Prabang so I could go back!
Amazing food! Very unique and homely. In Luang Prabang there seems to be an endless amount of restaurants serving the same food. Cafe Toui is different , food is amazing, staff are friendly and its great value.
Wonderful, private cooking class that included a trip to the market. The four of us loved the hands on experience and small group size and had a feast with our five dishes. Cozy atmosphere and cold Beerlao rounded out the afternoon.
Food was good but to small portions for the price, and it takes a long time for it to arrive at the table, and when it does it wasnt together even though we were only two people. The service is just as bad as anywhere else Ive been in Luang Prabang. Its a mystery to me why its so hard to get a smile from people here, or a signal of understanding when asking for something. But this is not an issue singular for this place... The cook or owner was very accommodating and nice though.
Wonderful and flavoursome food. Presentation could be improved though and servings larger, given the prices
The cafe is a nice cozy little place with simple setting. I had Souisi Pa (45k kip- local fish poached in coconut milk, basil and red chili broth. The gravy was rich and goes very well with the steamed sticky rice (5k kip). I ordered Coconut Water Semifreddo (30k kip- "frozen coconut milk" with grated cinnamon and lime zest. Very refreshing! The little pieces of coconut flesh adds to the texture. So goooood.
I enjoyed lunch at Cafe Toui so much that I booked a private cooking lesson for the following day. We went to the morning market to buy the ingredients for the dishes I requested and then we cooked and talked for about 2 hours. Toui is patient and kind, as well as knowledgeable about Lao ingredients and preparation methods. He prepares his dishes with love and really enjoys his work. The food we made was so delicious, especially the fish cooked in coconut milk and.dill. It melts in your mouth. You can soak up the sauce with the purple sticky rice Toui serves. Dont miss this place!
Delicious food, a bit pricey compared to other shops but highly recommended. Staff is friendly. Place is a few minute walk to night bazaar.Toui is the name of the owner/chef
I really enjoyed eating here. They serve Lao style food with slightly different ingredients (in my opinion), combined with a very good chef. You can taste the effort they put in it.They also organise super cooking classes!
The BEST produce, meal and value in town. Considering the quality and price disparity in Luang Prabang, from market bargains to fine dining in French owned restaurants... this place is the perfect balance.Lao owned, with fine dining standard meals for a very reasonable price. So if you are a budget traveler looking for a fine dining outing or a discerning diner seeking a memorable meal then try Toui. Hes a former Elephant chef that has taken his experience and passion to create a Laos inspired dining experience that will satisfy your taste and wont impact your budget... which means you can come back and eat again... try the set menu, then come back for the soup, curries, salads and desert. We did for all and compared to every other meal in town this was unquestionably THE BEST.PS. Dont base your experience on the service, as the chef has to do it all (with some help from family), but taking orders and cooking, along with sourcing produce each day at the markets. He really is dedicated to his trade and you can taste it.
