Café Pieper - Bar in Amsterdam, Netherlands
My co worker, who is from the Netherlands, was visiting at the same time we were and we met up here at her recommendation. Busy place, but friendly staff. We had some outstanding pub foods and drinks. The bill came out to just under €40 ... Thats for 5 people and we all had two drinks each. A secret gem amongst the overpriced bars in this area.
The place looked great but unfortunately the waiter chose to ignore us.I really tried to get his attention (he was chattingto ask if we can sit on a table that was empty but still had drinks from the previous party. After a while our legs didnt carry us anymore so we sat down.I tried to catch the waiters eye but he purposely looked away.He then went on to serve a couple that arrived after us and sat on a prepared table (the table unfortunately was too small for our group). We then gave up and walked away. The moment we left, he came to prepare the table.I really dont understand what it was that triggered this behaviour, up until that moment we only had the most pleasent interactions with locals...Makes me very sad.
Very arrogant, rude barman!.. 👎👎
The guys here is sooo pleasant to talk with and the drinks he made was very delicious, definitely recommended!
Nice spot by the canal. Coffee was good, and cost around 3,50 euros. Toilets were clean, but you have to go down steep stairs so accessibility is limited. They only served drinks, no food. We were there around 2pm, so they might have food at other times of the day. They dont accept Visa, Mastercard or AmEx, so I had to go for a bit of a walk to an ATM to be able to pay (who uses cash in 2022? Ive managed without cash my entire stay except here), which was very inconvenient. I was a bit annoyed when the waiter tried to argue that this is normal in Amsterdam and that not even the big supermarkets accept Mastercard or Visa here, which is just not true. Next time I will go to any other café that has a canal view instead (a lot of them accept Mastercard!), but if you have cash youll be safe with a nice coffee or beer here.
Laid back, staff is always nice even if they are swamped. I dont understand the negative reviews about not accepting credit cards. Enjoy the lower prices over the inconvenience of paying cash.
Great spot for a beer and to soak up the culture of Dam. Staff very friendly, gave me a small beer on the house as a welcome to Amsterdam, can’t complain!
Really nice place but me and my friends experienced the worst waiter experience ever.Waiter was extremely rude and non accommodating when we asked if we can split the bill.He responded “This is Holland only one person pay. Normally the guys pay for the girls. “ He then stormed off and when he came back said have we made up our mind to who is paying. This I don’t agree on as I live and work here.
Nice place, but awful service and no option to pay with visa etc.
Amazing place, delicious finger food, fair price, nice staff.
A bar with patina. Good location.
Nice little pub, served quickly when we arrived.
Friendly and cozy bar! Most important good beer :)
Café Piper might be the closest brown café to my place. For that reason… I love it. Great beer, nice people, fantastic location makes it better. If you are visiting Amsterdam to see me, this might be the perfect place to meet. Not in a tourist area and has some serious ADAM vibes. I don’t know how it authentically compares to other brown cafés but I dig it. That’s all that matters. Opie digs it too. It may take me a few more visits to give it an informed five stars. I’ll let you know.
very good place, excellent attention and they welcomed us and my two little dogs
One of the best classic Amsterdam pubs. The owner is a real Amsterdammer
So, if you are looking for a genuine Dutch bar experience that is somewhat tourist friendly definitely visit. However, do not complain that you cannot pay with your credit card, that they dont have a soy latte, you had to wait a bit longer or that you are not greeted by the staff like you are gods gift to earth. This place was around long before your great-grandfather was born and will be around long after you have been turned into dust.So settle down, enjoy the experience, enjoy the view, enjoy the locals and take the experience home with you.
Lovely vibe. If you visit Amsterdam this one is great to just have a few “Fluitjes”
Lovely man serving who was very accommodating. Spoke brilliant English, brought our drinks over to our table for us. Made us feel very included and right at home.
Charming place with the bartender who served us, made an effort in speaking any language, nice lighting, pub style with an underground bathroom. A cute little bar if you looking for some drinks. At this bar I had the first Heineken Ive liked.
Nice vibe and good location. Had a decent selection of single malts, which was refreshing to see. Ran out of the good beer quite early into the night, so that was a bit disappointing. Still, wed come back anytime
Adorable little bar on the canal. Quick service and decent prices for beer.
Absolutely fantastic must-go Amsterdam experience. One of the very classic bruin-cafes (brown cafes, dont mix with coffee shops). The place was perfectly stale and had a fabulous atmosphere of the Adam spirit. What more, it is not the tourists main stream so its never crowded and you can always see locals. The staff was also great, prices very good. STRONG RECOMMENDATION!
Fantastic spot, old style cafe. Perfect to look into the canal enjoying some good drinks or their really tasty bitterballen!
We were waiting on the terrace for 10 minutes and no one came to take the order. I got in the bar and took two beers outside myself. No prices on the menu for beers. We paid for a small and big glass of Heineken 9 euros. We didnt get a receipt.
I arrived and requested a Cafe Americano and it was like being home in the Southern States of the USA. Carolus was cheerful, outgoing and extremely friendly to the customers that were present. The coffee was very good. Enjoyed a couple of cups of coffee and fine hospitality. A great time.I read many of the comments on Google Maps about rude service. I would say based on my few visits if they treated you rudely, you may have earned it by being rude.
Have been twice, staff were great and can offer advice on local beers to try. Great atmosphere, chilled out with friendly people around if youre looking to start up a conversation with some Amsterdam locals
Really nice, traditional feeling bar. Really nice, classic feeling atmosphere
Great little brown bar in the centre of town. Very cozy and the beer prices are very good.Definitely come here for a beer and view of the canal.7/7 would Pieper here again
Cool local bruin bar. Limited selection of beer, does not take credit cards. All in all, exactly what you want (and should expectout of a true Amsterdam bruin bar.
Nice place to have some beers and good talks. Friendly bartenders...
Nice pub ,cash only though...
Super cute, old bar with a sweet old man as the bar tender.
These bruin bars are disappearing which is a shame. It was the first place in 3 days that i used cash, brilliant! They dont even take credit cards. Beer was fantastic and snacks smelt delicious. There were 5 old Dutch locals at a table in front of me laughing, having a beer and a genever. I hope the get to come here in the next 5 years.
Some decent beers, but a place in the middle of town that doesnt accept anything but Dutch credit card or cash makes it somewhat less inviting for foreigners. And becoming agitated because you only have visa and Master card is the reason for the two stars. Plenty of better, more inviting places in close proximity.
View of the canals is great. Very chill to drink your beer and watch Amsterdam walk by..
A small and authentic little cafe with a nice beer selection. The interior reminded me of a captains cabin in an old man o war.
Good location, quick service. The outside seating is great to watch the world go by as you drink in a classic Amsterdam setting.
Friendly staff serving good beers and platters. The small wooden building dates from 1666. Fun steep steps down to the loos. The barman provided playing cards on request so like people on other tables we played a few hands of Queimes.
Quirky old small bar with charm, seating inside and out and a good selection of beers available. I would give a higher rating however even with 2 members of staff working it took over 40 minutes to be served, even with having to go back up to reorder. Shame as others looked like they were enjoying the full experience, unsure if this is typical but would not be my first choice to return to due to service but for the buildings quirky charm.
Perfect place for a beer on the channels. The interior is typical Amsterdam (darkand the menu as well, including the traditional leverworst, zuur and osseworst
Really nice relaxed atmosphere with a variety of tasty Belgian beers
After walking for hours this was a great place to stop. The host gave us great recommendations of local beers to drink, he was spot on! We sat right by the canal & soaked in the atmosphere of cyclists, holiday makers, sailers and life! Highly recommended
This is one of my favourite bars in Amsterdam. Its twisted leaning structure adds to its caracter. Sitting on the terrace watching the world go by is in my opinion a great way to spend a few hours. The table service is excellent and it is reasonably priced for its location. If you are lucky musicians (buskerswill set themselves up on the bridge and put on a show for the people sitting on the terrace. The sun hits the terrace for most of the afternoon. The only negative is there is no food served otherwise I would gladly spend the whole day here.
Lovely and cosy. Beautiful light and location. Excellent G&T, good local beers.
One of my favorite spots in Amsterdam. Fantastic location at the corner of Prinzengracht and Leidsegracht, just down from Leidseplein. The staff is friendly, the beers are tasty, and whether you sit inside or outside its a cozy place to relax.
Lovely bar (brown cafe). Nice to sit outside with a beer.
Excellent cafe great selection of beer nothing fancy just enjoy the essence of Amsterdams cafe life
Café Pieper has a pub feel with very friendly staff. I wandered in looking for a pint and information regarding the local music scene. The two barkeeps made a concerted effort to find recommendations online. Café Pieper is on one corner intersection of two canals. The outdoor seating is a great place to relax, sip a pint and take in the scene.
The true brown cafe with unsurpassed service (continuous flow principleand masterly meatballs. See some famous dutch folks on the occasion.
