Cafe De Thai in Reno

First time I ordered I was drunk and I loved it. Today I tried again with their vegetable curry and that was not curry it was steamed vegetables. It’s so shady they don’t have a phone number. I couldn’t understand why would they have a desert listed as vegan but there’s no more info info or reassurance into their other vegan dishes. I asked to make my food vegan in the description but they put egg on it. I just came here to read all the bad reviews about the curry and I’m feeling nauseous.

We sat outside which was cute and near Virginia street so you can hear and see all the hustle and bustle. We had to stop the waitress to order. We ordered coconut shrimp as an appetizer. The flavor was good but it only came with 5 shrimp and a giant side salad for $13. We ordered 3 main dishes for 3 people (~$16/ea). One came out promptly. The other two were almost 10 min later so we had to watch each other eat. The food was okay. The flavors are there but muted. Everything came out in swimming sauces that looked like they were sitting under a heat lamp. Rice is extra ($2). I want this place to succeed but they need to work on proportions, presentation, service and pumping up the flavor especially for the price.

I hate to write anything negative about a local restaurant but I want people to know the experience I had to warn them. the service was great but the food was awful. I lived in Thailand for two years and this food was not Thai. I ordered yellow curry and it looked like beef stroganoff and tasted poor. When I ate it I thought I would get food poisoning and I was right, I have terrible food poisoning and nausea after eating there. It was also kind of expensive for what I got. Would not recommend eating here if you you want Thai food.

I think the food was supper good but they need more food choices. More options on the menu.

Would be nice if unscrupulous grifters would stop listing their restaurants under multiple names on DoorDash. This business uses ghost restaurants with different names to list this restaurant multiple times. It’s obviously deceptive. What legitimate reason you have to list your restaurant under a different name three times a week?

Ordered from this restaurant on UberEats. I can’t even call what they sent me Thai food. The Pad Thai and Pad See Ew were bland and the noodles were overcooked so you would just get a chunk of soggy noodles together. Not worth the money 👎🏽

Wonderful experience the owner was very welcoming and friendly food was fresh, full of flavor and delicious will definitely come again highly recommend for any time of day. Tried multiple appetizers and had their special of the day I had their Boba tea and Husband had one of their signature drinks.

Awful!!! And got very sick from this place....I ordered from door dash tonight and the second I opened the container It smelt sooo bad...thought I was crazy and after taking one bite Of the shrimp I just told myself "maybe im not hungry" so gave the entire thing to my dad...he threw it away without trying at all and said it is definitely bad and old...read other reviews and be careful!

Ordered delivery not knowing it was this place. It was listed as The Urban Thai Cuisine and was sorely disappointing. We had ordered crab fried rice and honey chicken. It tasted like canned crab with no flavor and the honey chicken was highly questionable~ not even sure it was actually chicken.... The won wonton soup was essentially salty broccoli flavored broth. Do not order from here!

Super disappointed in the pad Thai, didnt taste like they added any sauce just oil and meat on the noodles. Tasted no citrus or tamarind or saltiness just oily noodlesCrab Rangoons were really good

Yuck!!!!! This is the absolute worst Thai food I’ve ever had in my life. Zero sauce. Katsu chicken?!? Don’t order here seriously please trust me. It’s the grossest thing I ever tried in my life. I thought Cafe de Thai was a classy restaurant… it was when I was a kid. I think this restaurant isn’t related and is hoping you will think they are related, or it’s under new (terriblemanagement. Just please trust me and don’t waste your money.

Wow, this place is soooooo bad. I really really REALLY wanted to like it because I live nearby but hey sometimes restaurants with horrible food manage to survive because of their "location" and "ambience."P.S. I never leave bad reviews but when you are eating food that bad a Public Service Announcement is in order.P.P.S. maybe instead of beef red curry you should call it shoe leather bathed in rancid sauce with Srirachi Sauce drizzled around the plate rim to attempt to give it an authentic Thai/Haute cuisine appearance.P.P.S. Thai food? REALLY? For those looking for good thai food, try Thai Lotus. It is excellent!P.P.P.S. The one star belongs to the server (owner?who was nice enough. I almost feel bad for leaving such a negative review for a seemingly nice guy, but... PSA!P.P.P.P.S. If you go to a restaurant at what should be a busy time on Saturday night and it is empty...Caveat Emptor! Lesson learned.

They delivered cold fish nearly two hours after I ordered it and when I called to complain they said "its ok its cold, we cooked it hot before"Disgusting, unsanitary, and dangerous. Stay away!

Dont order delivery. Dont go here! Will make you sick!It took more than an hour and a half and Im like 6 blocks away (ordering at 430pm). The website made me tip $10 in advance for cold food. Dont make the same mistake as me, save yourself $80 and a $10 tip and just go to McDonalds so you dont throw up.

The quality of food is in great contrast with their store environment. Boba milk tea tastes almost like plain sugar water. Other kinds of food is way too salty.

Ordered delivery. Pricey. Pad Thai had little to no protein, mostly noodles. The bit of chicken in it was super dry. No flavor. The red curry had no coconut milk so it was basically stock and had separated by the time we got it. I really wanted to like it but it was really bad. Couldn’t even eat it :(

One of the worst thai restaurants we have visited ever. Food quality is very very bad and tasteless. We communicated the same to server but as a courtesy also they didnot change the dish. I would encourage no one to eat food here. Food was very smelly.

I ordered tiger prawn thai coconut for $24.95 im supposed to get 6 prawns, instead I got baby shrimps. Not only its overpriced it is also fraud. Warning do not order this.

Great food and service. Relatively small servings but extremely tasty. Somewhat of a fusion approach rather than authentic Thai – but delicious nevertheless. I would have preferred less focus on presentation in favor of a larger serving. Regardless, the food was great, the service was excellent, and well definitely go back.

The WORST RESTAURANT Ive ever been in my life!!!!! This restaurant doesnt even deserve one star.The owner at the restaurant was VERY RUDE, the FOOD QUALITY was VERY POOR and he seemed to lack any sense of hygiene. Particularly, the restaurant has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I ever experienced.When we entered, we were told that we should wait around 45 mins which was completely fine, but the owners attitude was totally not acceptable. He was very rude and rush during receiving the orders, threw a pen to us with handing over the receipt and we paid away before getting our food. Eventually, we waited more than an hour to get the food.I was VERY DISPLEASED by his attitude, when I told him he could have treated his customer better, he said if we dont want his food then get out. He then just put the orders on the side table even though I was standing in front of him and said I am very rude.I completely wasted $35 to order basil chicken, fisherman spring rolls, and tigerwood tea and threw all of them away in the garbage can ( as well as my friends). I even paid 2 extra dollars to order white rice and the rice was completely undercooked.We ordered a total of 3 Basil Chickens and it was sour and disgusting, the vegetables in the fisherman spring rolls were not thoroughly washed, which made me scared to even try. Hopefully, the couple bites I took do not give me food poisoning.The two same boba teas my friends ordered were even different in taste and color, the one has lighter color tasted like water mixed with a lot of sugar. He seemed like using the same cup to make with other boba teas. When my friend asked about the tea, he (the ownereven insulted my friends parents and said he should have received better education from his parents. Yes, it really made me doubtful whether he is mentally ill.Again, WE ALL THREW OUR ORDERS INTO A TRASH CAN!One of the employees followed us and apologized, and said that his boss is VERY RUDE.When I pay for the food at a restaurant, it also includes a service fee yet what kind of restaurant is this?I was traveling and my day was COMPLETELY RUINED BY him.I just dropped by the restaurant as most of the restaurants were closed already but Im regretting I did not eat a cup of noodle instead.

The server poked me in the neck with his pen and decided to insult me. I left, but my friends claimed it tasted like cardboard and chemicals at the same time. Evidently not worth the purchase. Do not go here unless you like being harassed and enjoy disgusting boba.

Great experience dinning in. He gave me a choice to sit inside or outside. We sat inside visiting for a convention. The food was delicious. I ordered the basil chicken with a mojito. He offered us dessert but we were full. I will definitely visit again.

Good evening everyone. My husband and I were having a Friday outing and decided to try one of our local eatery options. Cafe de Thai wasn’t very busy ,but we decided to give it a chance anyway. At first, our host was welcoming and got us sat right away. We tried the potato appetizer and it was okay, but very small portioning. Only three tiny sticks with barely visible potato’s on them. Next, we had our noodle entrees. I ordered the spicy noodles and my husband ordered the chicken. What came out in front of us was a monstrosity. An unappetizing meal full of thick cakey noodles and what seemed like frozen vegetables. We tried a few of the noodles to give it a fair chance, but was inedible. When my husband waved down the hostess we explained how the meal was not very good. He proceeded to ask us if we would like a box for our meal and repeatedly ask us for payment. We said we wouldn’t pay for the meal that was inedible and he eventually offered us the small noodles we originally wanted. Which wasn’t even an option in the first place until we complained. At that point we lost our appetite at the sight of our dinner and just asked to have it removed off the bill. The hostess again refused saying “ you pay, or I call the cops” so we settled for the laterite. The cops were in complete agreement that this was poor business practice. I would never recommend this restaurant to anybody. I wish I could erase this meal from my memory.

Cornish game hen?!?!? How often do you see that one on any menu? The prevailing reputation of this dish, that when improperly prepared, Cornish game hen can be gamy, not at the preferred end of the foul spectrum. I am happy to report that my CGH was well prepared at Cafe De Thai, tender, delicious and well portioned! With the key balance of spices as to make a most paletable dish. Combined with a chutney mango salad with Thai noodles, and an iced black tea. A sumptuous pleasing meal! The restaurant was clean, the service attentive, and efficient. In all, a great mid afternoon meal, that would be most suitable for any occasion.

their coconut cake and pad thai are excellent. I shared them with my kid. Their menu is a good selection with modern Thai food. They also gave us one sample of their avocado smoothie. Recommend them

This place is pure showoff. The interior seems decent & attractive, however food lacks everything decent that you’d generally expect from a decent Thai restaurant. We went 20 minutes before the closing time since we reached the area late and all restaurants in the area close around the same time, so we chose to eat Thai. The guy at the register asked us to sit outside since they wanted to clean the insides, which was fine. We really didn’t mind. The person was friendly too. But the major setback was when the food came. We ordered panang curry, Tom kar gai soup and chicken satay. The satay was different in taste, not the usual one that we’d eaten elsewhere( this is fine, we assumed this particular joint had a different recipe/version of the satay). Panang curry was super bad, the chicken was uncooked and the curry didn’t even have coconut-ish taste which the menu mentioned? My partner had to throw the curry off. The Tom kar gai soup had uncooked chicken as well, it was super salty. Against no coconut-ish flavor?. The vegetables inside it were very raw(raw onions are no no in a soup for me).Overall, the 1 star is only for the person at the reception. I’d give 0 stars for the food in total.Do not recommend.

Boba soggy and flavorless. Friendly staff. Cute cup. Coffee flavor is good but can’t enjoy because boba is so bad.

Terrible thai food. Inauthentic food. Very spicy as a base flavor. Super expensive. Difficult to find. No parking. Ownership is rude and petty. Too long of a wait. Even taking in to account the toll coronavirus has on small business owners, this place was just awful top to bottom. There are lots of thai places near by this one, go to any other one. This place aint it. Only thing it had going for it was pretty decore.

So bad! The original owner, Jay would be dying, if he new how bad the food was!!! Anyone seems to be able to make a decent Pad Thai. Not here, it was dry; pasta noodles with olive oil Taste, very bland, chicken had a batter on it and was so tough, the same with the shrimp, which had a gritty less to them, as if they had not been cleaned.Egg rolls were in such heavily batter, all you could taste is the batter or flour. Please do not go and waste your money.

Would NOT recommend unfortunately. I ordered the vegetable coconut soup and it was very bland. Contained large undercooked pieces of broccoli, celery, red and green bell pepper, tomatoes and carrot. There was, however, TWO (literallypieces of tofu. No seasoning I can taste or see. Literally tastes like boiled vegetables in water with coconut milk. Very disappointing honestly. The spring rolls were OK albeit they only me 5 mL of sauce (This is not an exaggeration).My advice to the “chefs” who prepared this soup would be to sauté vegetable with SALT, at the very least, and then add soup components rather than boiling and undercooking all ingredients.

Not good!!!! We order Thai food all the time. We decided to try a new place out. Their Tom gu guy soup was not good. I also found an old container lid in my soup. My husbands chicken pad Thai had shrimp and tofu in it.

Food is very basic and very less cared about! I got a chicken noodle soup with no noodles or any other vegetables except for chicken pieces and 3 pieces of carrot which was not boiled enough and still hard. The chicken in the pad Thai rice noodle was old not sure how old had a weird texture to it, explains why chicken was included in my soup. Also did the mistake of ordering an appetizer which was so spicy, inedible and the quantity looked stretched to make a dish, may be that’s just me. I ordered from them a week ago and it was good, so disappointed with the food!

The atmosphere is great, perfect for midtown Reno. The food is wonderful, the only negative thing I have about the entire experience, if you are a big meat guy... you might be disappointed. Over all loved it.

Hate to say it but this was one of the worst restaurants let alone Thai restaurants I have ever been too. I remembered this place when it was on Longley being pretty good but the food now is inedible. So bad we took a few bites of our the satay and sent it back. Then our entrees came out. Ordered pad Thai and red curry chicken. Curry was like gravy and pad Thai was so poorly made it was incredible. Wife and I had 2 bites and decided too leave. Fritters that came with food were over cooked on outside and ice cold inside. This place won’t be in business for long. Felt bad because waitress was really nice but food was so bad we refused to pay. Paid for the drinks and left. Do not waste your money here

Inauthentic. Overpriced. Small portions. We got 7 different dishes to share in our group. Two of the dishes we ordered were nearly the exact same thing and the ingredients on those were not mixed together. When we questioned them they said it was “deconstructed” so we could mix together it ourselves. I go to restaurants so I don’t have to prepare my own food.Honestly, I never leave bad reviews. But this was such a disappointment. I eat Thai all the time and this was the first time I was let down by a Thai restaurant.

Best Thai food ever! Food is so flavorful, great service, option of Uber eats delivery. I had the spicy beef and pad thai and it was one of the best meals Ive had, very spicy too. Mellow atmosphere and middle price range.

Not so much Thai food as Thai inspired food. It looks far better than it tastes. The curry we had contained raw vegetables, which is fine, until you get to the potatoes. That also isnt how curries are made. 2 stars for the friendliness of the staff, but the food isnt worth it.

I won’t be coming back. The green curry was very sub par and they had surprisingly small portions for what was charged. The service was very slow.Someone in our group ordered green curry but with tofu instead of chicken, which I had ordered. His dish came out as a thin brown ish broth, clearly missing the coconut milk. When he pointed it out to the waiter, he said that it was green curry and that mine was actually green because the chicken makes the color change. The stones on this guy...There are MUCH better Thai restaurants in Reno.

I arrived approx 1:15. I stopped because I saw their sign advertising a lunch buffet. There was no buffet. Server claimed that surrounding big companies called in for big orders depleting the buffet. It took over 5 minutes before being seated. Only one customer staff and he was he a backroom when I first arrived. I got the lettuce wrap and has to ask if that was the wrap filling. It was all ground up so I couldnt tell for sure. There were 3 sauces and condiments of (I thinkof chopped onions, sprouts, tomatoes and some crunchy noodles. Ive had much better other places. The filling gets flavor only from the sauces. The Coconut Chicken soup was not creamy as described. Very average food that is overly priced, a little over $18. I doubt if I ever go back myself so Im mystified why big companies would be ordering quantities of food from them??

My wife and I ordered red curry chicken. We order take out often and decided try this place. While the presentation is lacking along with the the higher than average price. The actual food and taste actually was mediocre at best. The broccoli was not cooked. For the price we expected at least average for Reno but we were sadly disappointed. I would not recommend this place when there are several better restaurants like Thai lotus. Thai cafe corner or Bangkok which offer better food for a better cost. This is also the first place weve ordered where rice did not come with curry and the curry was provided is a takeout box despite its liquid consistency.

We love this Thai restaurant! The atmosphere is calm and serene; the environment very peaceful and the waiter was so attentive to our needs. We love deep, rich curry flavors and this establishment does not disappoint. The scallops we had were seared to perfection and the yellow curry game hen was charred nicely on the outside and tender inside.We felt bad because it was dinner time but the place was empty-I think the location is off the beaten path, but I highly recommend Thai Cafe for lunch or a nice quiet and satisfying evening meal.

Im surprised at the higher reviews for this place. Our experience was quite the opposite- everything we had was flavorless- not what I want from Thai food! The chicken had a weird texture and was super dried out -- I couldnt even finish it. The green papaya salad had a salty flavor rather than sweet, and the peanut sauce was grainy. Dont get me started on the spring rolls. There are other really good Thai restaurants in Reno, so do yourself a favor and skip this.
