Atmosphere was great, but drinks were not. My margarita was tough to take down. They charged my husband $6 for a Diet Coke!

Great music, drinks so stout you feel that youre getting your moneys worth, which somehow feels noticeable with how over priced cocktails have become in Detroit. If your looking for a casual meet up where youll spend more time telling over music at each other, this is the spot... Have fun!!

Honestly don’t waste your money here when you can get drinks cheaper, better service, and better grilled cheese somewhere else. There is a two drink minimum but wasnt aware it was per person. I also got the one food item they serve which is grilled cheese; it was burn and didn’t taste that great. 1 sandwich and 1 corona cost $20. They also don’t have drink prices anywhere in the place.

This is a love at first sight kind of place ... you will know within moments of stepping inside. The proprietor is a Detroit institution. The Detroit Brown is a must for whiskey drinkers. Food is simple ... and not really why you are here. Its a scene. My favorite bar in the city.

Unique and comfortable spot! Stumbled upon this place by chance while visiting Detroit. It’s a gem! Very friendly staff, good drinks, heavenly grilled cheese that came with ranch, marinara, slaw, chips and a pickle! The atmosphere was lovely and made for one of the most special fun memories of my life! Absolutely will be returning anytime I’m in the city.

One of my happy places. I never feel more at home in Detroit as when I’m at Cafe D’mongos. Unpretentious, friendly and vibrant. Perfectly Midwestern. A required stopover whenever we’re home in Michigan. Love, love, LOVE.

This is such a nifty place. It’s a bit of a hole in the wall but still pretty cool. It is difficult to get a table but it’s worth it to wait. The bar is rather small and I wouldn’t say its everyone’s cup of tea. I definitely don’t think my mother or grandmother would ever want to come here but for me the ambiance is incredibly unique and the drinks are very good. The service is ok when it’s busy but it’s a bit understandable when the bar is as busy as it is. I’ve never had a problem reaching the minimum amount for using my card but I do understand why that might frustrate people.

Ive been to this place twice for different occasions and it is PERFECT. This place is awesome and the staff is the BEST. The second time I went there, they were slow when we got there so they gave us a free round of shots and the waiter was amazing. Everyone on their staff is attentive and you CANNOT go wrong coming here for any occasion. *Edited for spelling

Amazing local talent, great people and all around good vibes. We had the opportunity to meet the owner during our 10th visit. Simple yet delicious menu, reasonably priced booze and great people. Support local business. Side note-This is the very first bar I visited 5 years ago while visiting my girlfriend in Detroit .

Terrible service. No prices on the menu. The decor, while funky, is uncomfortable and does not incline anyone to stay longer than 45 minutes. My party was not told that there was a $15 minimum on cards and so I was forced to buy another beer (which was over priced.Dont waste your time. Look at the crowd when you go there and you see its a tourist spot and no locals are there. If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Its eclectic, doesnt mean its good.

This is a quirky, brasserie with loads of character & super-friendly bartenders. Its hipster meets a part of Paris with a Billie Holliday, bluesy vibe. Looks to be a local spot, most are in for a quick drink. In minimalist fashion, there are 3 signature cocktails on the small card drink menu and 1 food option: the famous White Boy Rick grilled cheese. Just order it. Perfect place for a drink. Steps away from Wright & Co. Place to listen to good music and drink something delicious. He has a small menu of very good drinks

If you like grilled cheese and have a strong bladder, d’Mongo’s is for you! Seriously (but I was serious), great people and drinks and entertaining live music makes the place a huge winner. Really local, and the local regulars will immediately know you’re not, but they’re friendly and welcoming nonetheless.

The staff is horrible. I don’t understand how there can be so many great reviews for this place!?!? They are so rude to their customers and treat us like children and yell at you if you have a large party. I have only been here twice but both times were completely horrible experiences. Go somewhere that will treat you with respect. The hostess was the worst person i have ever dealt with in my life and was more concerned about a reservation for their “regulars”. That’s fine and all but don’t treat your customers that are there at the moment spending money like complete trash. I also told her that i won’t be back and she was the worst hostess i have ever dealt with and she said she doesn’t care. Don’t waste your time or money.

Well, I was very excited to go to this place last night after all the good reviews and thinking it was a local Speak Easy. Downtown was busy, Friday night at 9p, Red Wings game, mild weather, lots of people Downtown, tough to find parking. Got to the bar, hostess asked how many (2). She said there were no tables for 2, but we could get a drink and walk around until we get a table but she didnt take my name. Live band was playing, sounded great. Place was very busy, not packed, not full. Waited at the bar for 10 mins to get us drinks. The (2bartenders were too busy making drinks for the bar and the tables to even acknowledge us. The other thing I noticed right away, the place stunk like burning grease/butter, maybe from the grilled cheese sandwiches that I heard they serve, but it stunk badly. I walked around and on the other side of the bar, I found Four empty (4person tables. I asked the hostess why there are 4 empty tables and why cant we sit at one. She said that they cant seat only (2people at those tables. Ok, I have a huge problem with that, there were NO (4person groups waiting to be seated. There were several (2person groups that were standing around. Why not utilize the tables and either seat two (2person groups if they ask us, or just seat US or someone else rather than leave them sit empty while people are waiting to sit and get waited on? I will NOT be going back. So we left and went to The Sugar House and had a great time, way better and awesome staff. And, If you want to go to a true Speak Easy, go to The Relief and Restore in Fenton.

This place was so much fun!! The atmosphere is VERY different and they had live music playing while I was there. Antiques everywhere, even a tiny phone booth at the front of the bar. The place is small, but I think a better word is "intimate". The drinks were STRONG so you absolutely get your moneys worth. Its a fantastic place to go with a group (they have many booths to accommodate parties of 4+and even a great place to go alone or on a date.

Unmitigated amazingness. To simply describe this place as a friendly dive bar with live music and grilled cheese sandwiches doesnt even do it justice. The clientele are run the gamut of ages and personalities, the drinks are cheap, and everything oozes an undefinable character. In a sea of garbage downtown, this place stands out. Must be experienced to fully comprehend how great it is.

A great spot for a date night. If you are hungry then make sure that you eat before you get there or plan on eating after you leave. When I went they only had one grilled cheese sandwich on the menu but it was the best grilled cheese sandwich that I ever had! They have a full bar and an interesting ambiance.

Unfortunately, I didnt spend enough time here, but Im really looking forward to returning. Ive spent many times Downtown on a Saturday afternoon but have failed to get in here because they dont open until 7pm. Thats my biggest complaint. Literally sat at Queens Bar down the street the last time and watched the clock until it was finally time for this place to open. This is what Id call an eclectic dive bar and it has a rather strange lay out. Lots of strange knickknacks hang and sit all over this place. Theres a double bass thats hanging above you on the ceiling (look at my pics). You could spend hours just looking around at everything. Its divided into two sections with the bar on one side and tables on the other. I sat at the bar side but took a peek at the other one and there was live music playing which was cool (didnt have enough time to enjoy it though). The 1/2 hour that I was there saw a rush of people come in as soon as they opened and I can only assume this can make for a lively night if you so chose to spend some quality time there. It just has the kind of atmosphere that demands you to have a good time. Not sure what their beer menu is like but I assume its rather small. They have a signature drink which is Captain Morgan and Faygo Rock & Rye. Its quite tasty. The bartender stated that she filled it about 3/4 of Captains and 1/4 pop but Im not so sure about that. It was not very strong. Not weak, mind you, but not what I was expecting by what she said. The only food they serve is a grilled cheese sandwich. Which I wish I had tried but we had already ate. Too bad because you could smell it walking toward the bathroom and it did smell good!Speaking of bathroom...smallest one ever - I think. A very thin wall separates the mens room from the kitchen/back room and you can hear the conversations that are going on back there. As this is a dive bar, it of course has writing on the walls. Not a complaint really.Looking forward to returning and spending at least a few hours there. Atmosphere is key with me and this place has it to spare! Just open a few hours earlier please. :)

This place was described to me by a few people, and based on the description, I had to go. Even though it does have "Speakeasy" in the name, it still feels somewhat secluded and hip. Probably the best part is meeting all the people who have been there for decades, like the older woman with white hair who will greet you at the door. There is live music, not sure if its always jazz, but is does exist (unlike another posters opinion). The music is not award-worthy, but thats part of the charm. You might want to skip on the food and just get cocktails.

Went on Halloween with a group of 10 as our last stop for the night. Atmosphere is quirky, lively and interesting. However, the owner was there and he turned out to be an absolute jerk. Complained that my friends and I were "only buying beer" and was extremely rude when we were talking to him. Even said "Dont touch me!" when I placed my hand on his back to lean over to him. (Im a 54" female, so I doubt it was fear.)Id been trying to get my husband to try this place for months. Well NEVER return.
