Cafe Berlin - Puerto Rican restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Vegetarian friendly, vegan friendly, gluten free friendly. Staff spoke English and Spanish. Brunch is good and might come back for dinner. A little pricey but worth it.
I cant believe that after so many years of visiting the island, Im just finding out about this place. Try the Salmon Tropical dish! You wont regret it
My husband and I were visiting Puerto Rico for 5 days, and ate at Cafe Berlin for 3 of the 5. We were so impressed we kept coming back! We both eat a plant based diet so we were thrilled with all the vegan options, but there’s plenty for meat eaters as well. The breakfast and coffee were delicious, but the real star of the show is their dinners. The Mejicano platter was definitely my favorite, and was a HUGE portion. Service was great as well, quick, friendly, and accommodating. Can’t recommend them enough!
Food was amazing here. Everyone found something that made them happy. Staff was polite and very helpful. They have plenty of vegetarian options and are vegan friendly as well. Highly recommend this Restaurant. They have the classics of Puerto Rican culture, as well as some new fusion dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed myself here.
Such a bummer! We came here in 2018 and the food/plating was so sophisticated. For $25 mofongo you’d think it wouldn’t taste dry and hard. My spouse got risotto… literally a massive plate of rice and beans with tons of provolone for flavor. Very very disappointing. They must have changed cooks or management because clearly this is not the same restaurant. Better off going to a local casual spot. The 2 stars are for the clean bathrooms…Update: my partner didn’t want me to worry about him on our trip, but we were just reminiscing about our vacation and he mentioned how terribly ill he was immediately after we left Cafe Berlin. If a restaurant has a DISCLAIMER on their front page of the menu, RUN. Why would a restaurant that charges insane prices for an hour wait for basic meals, need to say ‘hey, if you don’t like how it’s cooked that’s too bad we don’t send anything back to the kitchen’ that’s me paraphrasing. What a joke. I’m removing a star from my original review.
So glad that we tried this place out, the food was absolutely incredible and the service from Dema was even better! Thank you so much for making us feel so welcomed and helping us chose meals that we loved!
Love love LOVE this gem in old San Juan. We enjoyed their vegan empanadas, and vegan cheese burger and carrot cake! Service was top notch! Service alone is worth a repeat visit, BUT the food will have you coming back for more! We came AGAIN and shared the vegan cauliflower crust pizza--SO FRESH and delicious! We will be back every time we are in SJ, and we cannot wait! Go. Now.
I love this place. Whenever I have had the pleasure of traveling to this great city I’ve always made sure to stop in for a beautiful breakfast here. The chef(schanged over the years but the high standard of charm and great eating did not. Love love love.
The perfect place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before taking the free old san juan walking tour in the plaza. Food so good we ate here on our first and last day in Puerto Rico.
The atmosphere is delightful, the staff is welcoming, and the food is delicious. There are several vegan options both in food and drinks.
1st time in Puerto Rico, we stopped in for breakfast. Jose’ helped us order the most divine French Toast with fresh fruit and bacon, eggs and guava butter! What a wonderful experience and memories to take with us. Thank you Jose’ and Café Berlin, San Juan. 💜
Amazing! It’s so hard to find restaurants that have a good vegan and gluten free option in PR. This place is awesome. Food is delicious and the servers are sweet. Will go back often and bring family and friends when they visit. Thank you!
Amazing authentic food (with plenty of vegan options!and extremely friendly server as well :)
The menu states that if you don’t like the food it will not be replaced or refunded and I’m super picky so I went with a safe option beans and rice and sautéed vegetables and a coke my bf got seafood mofongo. They gave me peppers and onions for the sautéed vegetables 🥴 his food was also bland. The beans and rice were sad. The service wasn’t great either I thought the soda was flat but the server gave me diet. Realized it when I saw the bill.
The food is absolutely delicious. We are vegetarians but we also have omnivores in our family so this place is perfect. Everything we ordered was great and would recommend it to everyone. They accommodated 17 of us and the staff was great as well.
The cafe itself is very pretty and the service was just okay at best. We waited almost 40 mins for our breakfast- a croquet monsieur and a breakfast sandwich. The potatoes and fries were both cold. The food was just okay. Not worth the wait at all. For two meals, one juice ($6and a water, our bill was just under $50. It took them another 15 minutes to run my card properly and they kept insisting they needed my pin number. Absolutely not. Definitely would not recommend to others.
Place OKFood OKService OK (Raul is very nice)Vegan option OKBUT WAY TOO OVERPRICED. A SCAM FOR AMERICAN TOURISTS. DO NOT GO THERE.
Food was good but prices are a bit on the high side. Vegan options were good but not everything was available. Service was slow but I still tipped well because the food was good.
Food was amazing but Raul went above and beyond. I couldn’t believe the service he provided! If I ever visit again I’ll come back just for him.
Excellent food and service. Faces Plaza Colon. Good for people watching. A great reprieve from the afternoon heat and humidity.
This was our first breakfast choice while on our honeymoon! It has such a great vibe and Tayra M. Was absolutely fabulous. We had such a lovely conversation and the service was amazing.Go!
We had the Vegan Mofongo and Vegan Ropa Vieja which were both amazing. The server and chef were very nice to make us a special salad as well. Drinks were very good also so we had a great experience and recommend this place if you are looking for a vegan dinner at Old San Juan
I really cant say enough. Im in Puerto Rico as a tourist (Ill give you a minute hereand Im a vegan (ugh, I know). Heres some background info, I may be a vegan but my husband is not only super picky but also a massive carnivore. We dont necessarily adjust where we eat for me (I can modify almost everythingbut I do make sure hubs is good (Im never in the mood for drama 🤪). Cafe Berlin was so delicious, and had at least one meal I could eat for every course, we ended up going 3 separate times. The only negative I have is there wasnt vegan carrot cake on any occasion, but really, it just speaks to how great it must be. Highly, highly recommend!
So excited to find vegan options right in the heart of Old San Juan! Menu was in English and the staff was so kind and fun. Such a gem!
This is in a great location, and we like that they had a lot of vegan food choices. The drinks were good, too! They didnt answer our phone calls or Facebook messenger inquiries after repeated attempts to see if they were open, yet they were in fact open when we walked by an hour later. Our hot entrees were served to our table 10 minutes apart, and an appetizer that never showed up was suddenly out when we asked about its status after our entrees had been served. These things happen, and we would still go back to this restaurant. But at this price point, one expects better service and communication.
Wow! My husband and I are vegan and their food is delicious and creative! So happy we found this gem on our vacation. The service is slow but thats island life. Our server was so friendly! Highly recommend 💚🌱
Great vegan versions of local Puerto Rican cuisine. Its pricey but the food is flavorful and worth it.
Cafe Berlin is a little more expensive than I expected but so worth it! They have some amazing vegan options and I’ll definitely be going back.Everything was incredible. I’ve never had vegan empanadas this good. I was also so excited to be able to try mofongo!Service was amazing. We requested some almond milk on the side of the coffee. The almond was steamed and very good.
This place is fabulous! The dulce de leche pancakes were huge & delicious. Omelette was superb. And the San Juan breakfast was delicious. Potatoes & buttered bread that came with were perfect. Great service with a sense of humor.
Awesome place to try vegan food in local flavors and cuisine. The vegan mufungo was tasty. We also had criollo tofu which came with the same delicious sauce, and some yummy sides.I wish I could eat more because I wanted to try other things but their portion size is pretty good.We sat next to the bar and saw them make drinks that looked appetizing and insta-worthy..
We absolutely loved this wonderful place. Beautiful cafe. Friendly staff. And the food is out of this world. In a three day span, we visited twice! The Dulce de Leche pancakes were ridiculous!!!
As vegetarians, this is the best restaurant we went to in San Juan. It was also open on Christmas Eve while many other places were not. Tons of excellent vegan and vegetarian options. We had the dulce de Leche pancakes at the recommendation of the waiter, who said it was the best item on the menu. Incredible!
This was my second time visiting Cafe Berlin. The atmosphere is nice and the food is good. I had the veggie mofungo both times and it was good (but not great). I did order their vegan carrot coconut cream cake that is made by the owner, and that was delicious!
Located across from Plaza Colon, Cafe Berlin is one of the best places to try Puerto Rican food. Being a vegetarian and hoping to try Puerto Rican cuisine, we were delighted to find Cafe Berlin offering many Vegan/ Vegetarian options. We ordered the Vegan Mofongo and the Criollo Tofu for two people. The food was delicious and freshly prepared to order. The elderly gentleman who served was courteous and checked on us to make sure the food was good.Definitely recommend for anyone looking to try Puerto Rican food with a Vegan/ Vegetarian twist.PS: Despite visiting for lunch when we were pretty hungry, we found the portion size to be pretty big. After a hearty lunch, we decided to pack the leftovers to enjoy during dinner.
Delicious food! Very great location for vegans traveling with non-vegan companions/skeptics. I came here two days is a row because they had so much more I wanted to try. I thoroughly enjoyed the vegan breakfast bowl. They know what they are doing in the kitchen. Also tried the vegan mofongo and empanadillas. My cousin ordered the brioche french toast (not veganand loved her food as well. Didnt get a picture of her croque madam or salmon avocado toast she ordered the second day, but she loved them both. We also had the passion fruit sparkling drink and it was delicious, and a signature beverage of this spot. Service was attentive and we were able to be seated quickly both times we visited.
This place is yummy we came here everyday we were here. Everyone was super nice and speak English. I want to take this place home. Great food even for vegan diners. Thanks for being here.
Honestly one of the best places for vegan & vegetarian food in San Juan. Great variety of selections, amazing staff, and a very interesting ambiance. We ordered the Vegan Puerto Rican Mofongo and the Gluten Free Vegan Pancakes. Both dishes were amazing. You could tell that there’s a lot of effort put into the presentation. The taste was as good as the presentation and sometimes it’s not always true at other places.I’d say the highlight was the pancakes and I would definitely order again!
Cafe Berlin is the best restaurant weve been to in Puerto Rico. It is a bit hard to find vegan food in the island, but Cafe Berlin has the best vegan food Ive tried for a non-vegan restaurant. We had the cauliflower stake and the vegan Puerto Rico mofongo and they were both amazing. We wanted to get the vegan cake, but unfortunately they were out. Apart from the food being amazing, the service is even better. Were traveling with a baby and a service dog and they were very accommodating. They brought water for my dog and they even found me a quiet place for me to pump. If I could give them six stars, I would. From now on, this will be a mandatory stop for us anytime we visit the island.
This restaurant is a paradise for Vegans/Vegetarians.. the best way to eat the otherwise traditionally meat based Puerto Rican dishes in a Vegan format.. the Mofongo and Veggie empanadas very delicious.. reduced 1 star for not so good veggie tacos and the high prices
I absolutely loved this place! The ambiance was beautiful and inviting. It’s a brunch place on a very busy street so make a reservation or get there early get a spot. There’s outdoor seating as well but it can get hot and windy( a canopy tipped over while I was there). The prices are affordable and the meals were great. I had the pancake and it was divine. The food is worth the wait.
Amazing food and service! The older guy that served us made us feel really welcome and taken care of. The coffee latte was good! Definitely recommend 👌
Despite the price, I could tell that each plate was made to order and of the highest quality. A whole vegetarian section make our work of finding vegan options a breeze. The vegan mofongo and tofu were some of our favorite meals during our whole trip to San Juan. Definitely a must-try!
This place is amazing. Has the best vegan options in San Juan. I would definitely go back here.
One of the first restaurants you pass when entering Old San Juan; good vegetarian options BUT you’re gonna pay higher than anywhere else you go for a similar experience. The most expensive empanadillas I bought on the island and left hungry
Upscale, nicely decorated cafe in old San Juan with many vegan options. Unfortunately service was extremely slow. The vegan empandillas were delicious, but after waiting almost an hour for our entrees with empty water glasses and no one coming over to refill them, the vegan loaf was pretty underwhelming for the price of over $20. It just tasted like mashed beans. The mashed potatoes weren’t buttery or flavorful. Nice presentation though. Would come back and try something else
Very beautifully decorated eatery. Our waiter was very attentive, and offered his suggestions on what to try based on what we liked. The food was very quick to come out and the Passion Fruit Mimosa was DELICIOUS!
This restaurant was really the cherry on top of my PR stay. I was worried about vegan options during my stay, but there were quite a few. Im so glad we chose this one though because their vegan empanadas were AMAZING. I typically like to venture out and try other places and dishes but we came back the next day. The jalapeño sauce with them is a nice accompaniment. And the sauce of the vegan mofongo? Seriously, I could roll around in that stuff. Its a dish big enough to serve a few people, so split if you can, but you MUST try it!Everything about this place is just wonderful. The food came out much faster than expected but we werent rushed, the food was amazing, the people here were just so friendly and welcoming and I had the best mojito Ive ever had. This place is a must of your near San Juan.
Amazing food with several vegan options. Definitely a most visit place if youre in Old San Juan
I stopped for lunch here on a 4 hour transit in Puerto Rico. Needless to say I was in a rush, the staff is very friendly, the service was normal speed but too slow if youre in a rush. The outside seating was very nice. I ordered the chefs creation and the empanadas. Both dishes were very very tasty. This restaurant closes at 4 on Saturday and they only had one piece of chicken for my chef creation order so I couldnt try other things. Also its a bit pricey even in US standards. For that I took out a star.
Amazing food and service. Loved all the dishes we ordered and the fresh juices. A must to go to places for Puerto rican and Caribbean dishes and they have good vegetarian options as well. We tried the Mofango for the first time and loved both chicken and vegetarian Mofango. We definitely recommend this place for anyone.
