CHIFA REST CENTRAL RG &PC S.A.C. - Restaurant in Barranca, Peru
The good: the service was really warm and attentive. The bad: The flavors were unbalanced, the drinks were poorly mixed, the dandan noodles were just a bunch of sesame and soy sauce dumped onto some noodles, the veggies were just ok. Nothing a mediocre cook couldnt make quickly home.
Thought it was pricey with small portions. Once was enough, there are a lot of other great places to eat in LA.
Modern/western plating and take of Chinese- Peruvian cuisine - tailored toward sweet and savory side. A bit pricey and lean portion. I wish they will be more generous in serving portion to make it a truly family style setup. I found the service to be decent.
As a Peruvian living in LA, my search for good authentic Peruvian Restaurants has mostly been a disappointment. Most of the time I feel terrible for the people whose only experience with Peruvian food is the messy offerings of most Latino neighborhood Peruvian restaurants that never get close enough to even a home cooked Peruvian meal. Also, I have always been so disappointed that it was so hard to find anything more than a hole-in-the-wall or strip mall based Peruvian restaurant, so I could get an experience closer to what you can get when living in Peru (SF has La Mar and it’s such a shame that LA doesn’t get something like that).Well, that was until last night when we ate at Chifa. I was jaded due to my prior experiences and didn’t expect much (I was aware of the hype but since it came from Americans I was not taking it seriously lol). We had the pollo a la brasa and the anticuchos (the least fusion dishes on their short menuand I can confidently say that they came so close to the real thing that it was shocking! A friend of us had the lomo saltado and it also was pretty good (my only note would be that it needed to be saucier). The only thing I didn’t like was the Chicha Morada. It was too tart, definitely not good. But it did not detract from the overall quality.A separate praise is due to the staff and management. Last night was a weird night because while we were waiting for our order to be taken, a car lit up on fire at the next door gas station, right next to the restaurant’s fence. The staff moved everyone outside (although I would have appreciated a louder warning so we could realize about the danger quicker). Thankfully, the fire department came very quickly to put the fire out averting a potentially catastrophic situation. Definitely, this rattled the staff’s focus and likely messed up their flow because a member of our party got his order completely forgotten. He was understandably upset and cancelled his order because they told him it would take up to 40 min to have it ready. To make up for all the inconveniences of the night they gave us 15% off and delicious alfajores for free!! This was completely unexpected but a great gesture. Our server was very nice and behaved very professionally as well.We didn’t try the Asian fusion dishes (most look somewhat less authentic than what you would get at an actual Chifa in Peru), but I bet they taste really good.In summary, Chifa offers authentic Peruvian flavors in a environment that is more elevated than your regular Los Angeles Peruvian restaurant (something Peruvian food definitely deserves), service is good as well. Just keep in mind a few things: it’s busy (deservedly so), dishes will take a long time so plan to share them with your group as they come otherwise you will be waiting too long until everyone gets their food (they warn you about this when ordering), and there’s no parking but you can find plenty close by 😉.
The food and drinks were good, but pretty steeply priced, and a bit much for a lot of fries. Parking early Friday evening was tough that I wouldnt have bothered attempting later when things were more busy. Staff was great, I do think one of our orders was accidentally missed and took some time to come out. Dishes and selection were interesting, and done OK, but not enough to justify the price.
The food was amazing—every dish was delicious. The staff were great + the service was very good. We will be back very soon!
Humberto , Rica and John run a beautiful family restaurant with unique Fusion Cantonese Peruvian and Taiwanese flair. We had the pork ribs and the Zhongzi with beans (the Latin twist). Cocktail was also amazing. Can’t wait to go back to try more.
Ive only had their BBQ spare ribs. The ribs alone run about $27 so like $30 including tax and this is just the ribs. The ribs ARE PRETTY GOOD granted but I can also go to another Asian spot and get an entire meal and still have leftovers for that same price. But its convenient and its across the street from my house so I know Ill come here again. Lol.
The food here is truly phenomenal. The service, ambiance, and overall dining experience were equally phenomenal (if not more). The entire staff was extremely friendly, welcoming, and informative; which elevated my dining experience even further! Each dish was packed with robust, umami flavors— I ordered the Char Sui, seasonal veggies (this was beyond incredible), spare ribs, and Dan Dan noodles. The Char Sui and seasonal veggies were by far my favorite, which doesn’t take away from the other dishes because they were all mouthwatering. The cocktails were also a great cherry on top.Being Chinese/Cantonese myself, Im more hypercritical with our food - and this definitely exceeded all of my expectations. You can genuinely tell that they pour their heart and soul into everything at this restaurant. I definitely want to come back to try the black sesame cheesecake dessert. Dont walk, RUN!
Wow, this place blew my mind!!!First of all, the seasonal vegetables are a must-try. I know, I know -- how exciting could vegetables be? My friend said it was literally the first time in his life he enjoyed cauliflower. It has the perfect smokiness and wok hay which is impossible to replicate at home. The soy sauce chicken was also perfectly succulent. The restaurant is a family-run business run by the sweetest people youd ever meet. Rica is a firecracker and so incredibly lovely, as well as all the family members I spoke to. Its rare to get a home away from home, especially in a big city like LA.Would recommend Chifa to all those in search of a meal made with love!
Went in while visiting, lots to say about this place. No parking lot available, must park on the streets, usually full.Ambiance :Loved the decorations and theme of the restaurant. Designer utensils, themed lanterns, and shaded seating area.Drinks 2/5:I ordered the Lai Cha and chicha morada. The Lai Cha was subpar with an over-brewed bitter taste and additional sugar to compensate, youre better off trying it at other places. The same can be said about the chicha, so I added a bit of water to balance the ratio.Food:I ordered the tiradito and char siu. The tiradito felt like their approach to a traditional Peruvian ceviche. If youve never had Peruvian ceviche before, this place is not the best to go for. Instead, the tiradito has its own merit, own fragrance, but lacks that special kick in spice (4/5).As for the char siu, the Chinese sauces are definitely homemade with a bit of extra charing to get the caramelized layer over the pork. The taste is great (5/5), but I found a hair in my meal after the first bite, not a pleasant experience since the food itself is not cheap (1/5).Overall, the portions are definitely not balanced to the price you pay. So this place isnt a budget friendly nor family friendly place for the average LA consumer. You can share each dish with one person, but its really meant for one serving.Merchandise:I loved their merch, as the colors and design are unique and well defined (5/5).Overall, I enjoyed my visit but will probably not be dining here again. I just hope other places in the area do not begin to buy out the already amazing restaurants in the area.
Given all the good reviews, and the fact that this restaurant is on the Michelin recommended list, I expected much better tasting food. The strong points of Chifa are the ambiance, the presentation of the food, and the great service. Unfortunately the actual taste of the dishes falls surprisingly flat. Lomo Saltado was overcooked and the Dan Dan Mian had a weird smokey aftertaste that had tobacco flavorings. The Zongzi was okay once covered with sugar but tasted like unsalted beans. The saving grace to my meal was the Braised Spare Ribs and the Anticucho, both arriving fresh, hot, and savory. The Alfajores for desert left much to be desired. TLDR I would not recommend this place, especially while so many other great restaurants in the area exist.
Funky and fun space and menu to match the looks. The food is fresh and great but the cocktails are so so.
A real authentic peruvian style restaurant. Everything is served family style so get a few plates order what looks good and share a delicious meal with your date or group.
Absolutely incredible experience!A+ service, amazing food and great vibe! The best Lomo Saltado in the city, Tiradito and Char Siu are DELICIOUS!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
I really enjoyed Chifa. The Chinese-Peruvian fusion menu made for a unique dinner experience. We ordered the Dan Dan, vegetables, ma po, and ceviche. Each was delicious…but in the end, the high pricing didn’t seem justified compared to similarly delicious, but considerably less expensive options in the area.
It was super nice our host Nancy knew the owner before they started the restaurant. We had an A+ service. Chef John was super nice and came and enjoyed wine with us. Food was excellently prepared. Highly recommended if you are able to get a table.
Excellent dishes. A little disorganized but very tasty
Really nice place!Waiters are very helpful and friendlyThe menu is really good, its to taste something different!
Beautiful interior, imaginative menu, but it’s a place to experience, not really enjoy the food because it’s very…lackluster. My friends and I shared bbq shrimp, fried rice, grilled veggies, tea, and Eat Nunchi’s iconic corn jelly desert.Great presentation, but I’d go elsewhere for good food. The hype is bigger than reality.
So great to be back in Cali after travelling. The thing I miss most when travelling in Europe and the Caribbean is good Asian food. This place is ridiculously good! Fusion (in a good way), great prices, atmosphere, the service, and the food! The chashu was to die for!
An underwhelming experience. I cannot recommend going on a Sunday evening, as they are only open 15 hours a week and by the end of that time they are out of many of the main dishes. We ordered a few things. The beef heart was pretty decent and arrived quickly.. Then 25 minutes later, when we were wondering where the rest of our food was, were told that they were out everything else. No apologies. The staff seemed nice but like they honestly didnt care about our experience. We ended up just leaving because the only thing left would take between 30 to 50 minutes to arrive at the table.I dont think Ill be back even tho all the food at other tables smelled really good.
The services so sweet, Jordan so cute and professional . I like her! And the Taste extremely good 👍 Just hope chef can add more spicy 🌶 food in future.
After seeing this place featured on the local news, my husband had to try this place, so we decided to take an hour drive to what we thought would be fine dining. We were definitely disappointed. The Pollo a la Brasa was extremely salty. Best part of the dish were the fries which I could have gotten at any hamburger place for a lot less price. The Lomo Saltado was a little tastier but served over basic fries is not worth the price. Taking the drive for a second chance is a definite no especially since this place has no parking.
Worth the hype. Make sure you make a reservation. We tried 4 different food options and everything was flavorful and fun to try. Presentation and service was amazing too! They have fun cocktails and a beautiful ambiance.
Update: I’ve now been here more than a handful of times and every time I come back it gets better and better. I highly recommend the brûlée char shiu, spare ribs, black pepper prawns, tiradito, lomo saltado, pollo a la brasa. The Chinese fries are great though a bit salty. Garlic rice is a must to accompany the yummy protein. Drinks are great too. They also serve vervet, one of my fave sparkling cocktails in a can!Went here during their soft opening for outdoor dining which was spectacular. The service and ambiance could not be beat. The food was good. Take out your camera because there is a lot of IG worthy food shots to be had. It’s a scene. Foodies and fashionistas and ppl who can’t stand being cooped up any longer. I love their collabs- they had one w Ali Wong and one with Solange and their desserts vary w diff collabs. Dining here made me really miss indoor dining with friends in a cute space with awesome service.
This is the spot for Chinese-Peruvian food in LA.Theres extremely limited seating indoors, so I recommend making a reservation on Tock if it looks to be a good night when you plan to go.The outdoor seating in the back was well organized. The heaters were both effective and placed at a good distance. Never felt sweat and rarely felt a chill. Theres a tarp overhead to keep the wind under control.Meal-wise, absolutely excellent. The pollo ala brasa and lomo saltado are top tier picks. Lomo saltado in particular, as its a national dish and has the feel of Chinese stir-fry with Peruvian flare. One thing to note is that they didnt serve pisco sours at the time I went. I think theyre still sorting out their kitchen, so keep that in mind if thats an expectation you have.
The food and service were amazing! I have told many friends about this restaurant. The Lomo Saltado melted in your mouth and the Braised Spare Ribs just fell off the bone, both were phenomenal, I cannot wait to return!
Really nice decor and great service but people come here to eat. I really wanted to like it. We ordered 3 dishes and all 3 were unpleasant - and i love new food experiences. The last was to come was mapu tofu. We said that after 2 misses, at least the mapu would be fine. It wasnt- kind of a "gelly" sauce and a from the package chemical taste . For the price we paid, we should be at least somewhat satisfied. The only thing that was good was the cocktail in a can. Sorry maybe we were unlucky but getting unlucky for $100 i would not be able to recommend for anything other than decor and ambiance.
Not bad, but not that good for price. Kind of underwhelmed. No particular dish stood out. Cant tell if theyre on all these food guides because of marketing.Cute decor, lots of heart everywhere.
$30 loma saltado is a plate of chewy filet over average fries. By far the worst thing we ordered so stay away! Black pepper prawns weren’t bad but also bad value at around $30. I also dont get how any tiradito can justify being $30. Maybe I just can’t afford to eat in Eagle Rock anymore.Best dish we had was the char siu; excellent fat/meat ratio, flavor and texture.Total for 2 was about $120 but the food wasn’t any more enjoyable than Panda Express(hello orange chicken!).Average service/ambiance. Parking sucked.
~Make a Reservation~ especially on the weekends! We were sat right at our resy time and drinks quickly followed. Everything we had was good, super flavorful and filling. I would recommend splitting everything, family style. Get the pork toro, its basically meat candy. We got three desserts and the cake they have on the menu right now was the star. Id like to visit again next time Im in LA.
I really wanted to like this place, in fact I wanted to love it. I’m Peruvian-American (1st genand grew up flying to Lima, Peru where I’ve eaten in Chinatown and even the more famous dining like Madam Tusan. I cannot stress this enough, this place is beyond gentrified and is NOT authentic Peruvian-Chinese actual Chifa.I should have known something was wrong the moment our food came out within minutes of ordering. Sorry, but no “fast working guys” can realistically make food that quick without it being questionable. It was supposed to be a quality dining experience, not a Denny’s.The anticuchos were terribly chewy (any Peruvian can tell you that it’s not cooked rightand the lomo saltado tasted like it had been bathed in solely black pepper. No wok flavor, tons of onions, CHERRY tomatoes (what?), and absolutely not a taste or dash of soy sauce or aji amarillo.I am so bummed. I have been dying to have authentic Peruvian food after moving away from home and this was just so sad. Tons of LA folk eating what they think is an authentic cuisine…but what once again isn’t.I called them after leaving, because I didn’t want to lay it into the super nice waitress. The person I got on the phone was confrontational after I told her we didn’t like the food, her response to me explaining my heritage was “we’re definitely not the place in Lima, Peru”. When I told her the food wasn’t good she rebutted with “yeah, well you ate all of it didn’t you?”. Yeah. We did. Cause there was like 5 pieces of meat in a tub of onions, and like 4 chewy ribs. And we we’re paying $100+ on dinner for 2, on our anniversary, after a long day of work that started at 5am.After being treated like I was stepping out of line for not diminishing into the crowd of “supposed culturally-versed LA folk” (but actually aren’t besides their experience of eating “fusion elevated” gentrified dining). I was able to get a 50% refund.Definitely not a place worth recommending. Especially after my interaction with an unapologetic and condescending employee. (The main reason I am writing this review). If I had spoken to someone who was nice and sympathetic, I wouldn’t have taken the time to write this.P.S. if you aren’t the place in Lima, Peru then maybe don’t say it’s PERUVIAN-Cantonese. America is a cultural melting pot and many of us are wanting a TASTE OF HOME and wanting to share our diversity, culture, and food with others. Thank you for letting me know you weren’t that AFTER we dined at your establishment (even though it’s advertised on the website as traditional). 🤷🏻♀️The saddest part is I spent more time writing this review than eating at Chifa!!! (30min total dining experience).
The Char Siu is the star! So tender and so much favors packed in a very small package! Si Yao chicken is another pleasant surprise, beautiful place and delicious foods.Service are super friendly and very very attentive!!!!
Food was fantastic. Everything was great quality. Definitely recommend.
This was the cutest place ever ! I’ve been meaning to come here for the longest and made sure it was the first restaurant I went when in Cali - the ribs I had were amazing, fries were nice n spicy and the garlic rice was super flavorful I can’t wait to come again next year
This place is a must visit. I love their menu, sooooo many vegan options. The flavors are very authentic and make every dish to DIE for. Love how they also partner with different local dessert spots to feature a custom dessert on their menu. DONT MISS OUT !!!
I loved the fusion in all the dishes present at Chifa. I knew I wanted to hit it on my trip to LA and Im glad I did. Everything I had was delicious. If I lived here Id stop by alot.
I have been there 2x now. Great food (tried the vegan options), great drinks (I got the chicha morada, my wife got the lemon tea). My only very small issue is the order of food coming out is kind of random, but it comes out quickly and fresh. I also very much recommend the spg sauce to go. It is so good.
We just had a lovely date night at Chifa. We chose to eat outside which was very socially distant and had plenty of shade and heaters. Service was above par, our waitress, Jordan, and come to think of it, every server, was super attentive. Very genuine, and knowledgeable we will be back for the excellent service. The food was also delicious. Not your typical Chinese or fusion restaurant. Super surprised to find so many vegetarian options, and alternative plant based meat replacements which was nice to see. Definitely order the spare ribs and the garlic rice as they are both to die for and we will get those everytime we return. The menu is pretty small, but its all family style so you could get by fine with a couple selections and an order of rice. Order a pot of tea first thing so you can get a free refill. Dessert was also very tasty, but ultimately skipable, which is usually the case, unless its date night. We will definitely be back with friends, and family.
Great spot - amazing design and food was an interesting fusion but really great. Chicken was real good. Vibe in the parking lot on a Saturday evening was cool, worth checking out!
Tried 2x, sadly unimpressed, both takeout. Due to the price, most likely will not ever do take out again. Would give another try for dine in.First order,Braised Spare Ribs - Very good! Tender. Would reorder.Pollo Ala Brasa - Tasty, would reorder.Season Vegetables - Veggies were crispy with delicious sauce, cauliflower, cloud ear fungus, string beans - would reorder.Sesame seed cheesecake - Tasty but it was the size of a eggtart for $7.............Second order,Dan dan mian - SO disappointing it was actually a lil upsetting. Not Szechuan at all, had no spice. Noodles were gummy and sauce was way too thick, taste was very peanuty. I cannot recommend this dish at all.Seasonal vegetables - Disappointing this time, too salty.Si yao chicken - Very tasty! Meat moist and flavorful. $25 for the size is the only con, but yummy.Garlic rice - Overcooked and not very well done, taste is flat.
Overall it was a solid meal. Food was good, though some dishes were definitely better than others. The Spare Ribs were fantastic, and the Black Pepper Prawns were tasty but a little challenging to eat. Popos Soup was nice but a little reserved in flavor, and the Tradition Zongzi missed the mark for me. For drinks we tried the Chicha Morada which was delicious, bright, and crisp. We had the Black Sesame Cheesecake Tart which was quite good, but a tiny portion. The prices were fairly reasonable. We were not impressed with the service. The servers themselves were lovely and accommodating, but the speed and attentiveness of the service itself was lacking. We waited 15 minutes after our reservation time to be seated (not too bad and we didnt mind waiting), but then waiting another almost 20 minutes without anyone coming over to take our order, and we had to flag someone down. The food came promptly, but when we ordered dessert we waited almost 30 minutes, despite the fact that all we ordered was the cheesecake and it was ready-made.If I lived closer Id consider giving it another try, but for now I cant say im itching to come back to Chifa.
This place is new so I’ll give it a break but I wasn’t impressed. I don’t even remember what I had. My wife had some kind of vinegar pork dish that was mostly bones. I do remember that the rice was under done and stuck to my teeth. I also remember the French fries were not good. They were the first fries I’ve ever not finished. No one else at our table ate them either. The restaurant itself was lovely but because of the pandemic we had to eat in the parking lot which was pretty nice and private. The waiters all seemed like rookies and most likely family members of the owner. Lots of awkward moments with them. I’m hoping they fix the problems they have because it’s a great spot and an interesting gastronomic idea.
What an amazing take out experience. Staff was lovely. Food absolutely delicious. The beef hearts were tasty, as well as the yummy chicken dish. Looking forward to ordering again soon!
We ordered takeout and it was so delicious ( I definitely recommend). I ordered the Beef Short Rib and the Ali Wong Special. Both were super filling and flavorful. The beef was super tender too. I also saw the outdoor dining and it looked like a nice spot for dinner. Service is quick and easy and staff are friendly. I will be coming back
Chinesse/peruvian, beautiful decor, great service, feels very nice home food.
Full disclosure, we ordered during quarantine so takeout was only offered in LA county. It’s been sometime we felt comforted after eating and that’s what we exactly got from Chifa. When picking up, we were able to see the interior and could only imagine what it would have been like eating comfort food in that very cool space.Chifa we will meet again when quarantine is over for the full experience!
Exceeded my expectations. One of the things that has kept me sane during Covidtimes is learning to really make Chinese food, and Ive gotten pretty good! So my standards have recently increased from already high standards after trying many of the amazing options out in the SGV over the last couple years (we are truly spoiled with incredible Chinese food here in LA). Needless to say I was incredibly excited to see a restaurant with a fresh take that looked high quality opening so close to home.Theyve been insanely slammed with all they hype, especially for a new restaurant, so I told myself Id give them at least a couple chances considering how hard it is for the first few months of a restaurant even in normal times, but no need. The 1/2 Chicken and the Ribs are both fantastic. You can tell they use high quality meat and the flavors couldnt be better. Dan Dan Noodles were quite different than the ways I tend to make them, more of a thick pastier sauce, but were also wonderful. Makes me rethink my own approach! Desert was unique and really fun, totally not something that was my usual style but we got a kick out of it and it had a great texture contrast.Welcome to the neighborhood Chifa! I have a feeling Ill be getting take out often, Im left very impressed.
Chifa was Amazing. Everything has so much flavor and all the meats are cooked to perfection. Highly recommend.
