Landmark 12th-century castle built by Crusaders from limestone & the ruins of Roman structures.
Byblos Citadel in Tripoli
Description
Lovely old citadel, short hikes, great scenery and photo points.
Nice ruins, cheap prices.
I really enjoyed our visit here. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. I recommend visiting if you love historical landmarks. There is a small amphitheatre and a few standing columns. The view from the castle is beautiful but would say be careful climbing up and down the stairs the health and safety needs some touch ups.
MoreThe entire grounds of Byblos are stupendous. A must see for anybody even remotely interested in history. The Crusader fortifications are okay but it’s the grounds around it that are really amazing. Check out the royal tomb shafts as well. And see the museum in Beirut that has the finds from the tombs. Gold jewellery etc
MoreAmazing place! If in Lebanon make yourself a favor and take some time to visit it.
MoreDefinetely the best archeological site in Lebanon. From prehistorical settlements, through Roman, medieval Crusarders up to Ottoman times. To see it in details reserve at least 3 hours.
MoreWonderful city, with old souks and you must visit the moment of time fish fossils museum if you go to byblos city.one of a kind!
MoreAmazing views, we had a guided tour of the area saw a lot of interesting history, was interesting that Byblos was home to the creation of the western alphabet also one of the worlds oldest cities
MoreVery interesting place spawning millennia of construction and destruction, but gradually falling into disrepair (paths overgrown with vegetation, no maps or anything similar). Not much information on site - try reading about the place before going there and build a mental map. The small museum is open and helps with a bit of context. The most interesting local artefacts are now in the National Museum in Beirut. Allow about two hours on-site to see everything. The entry is still 8,000 LL only (5 USD official rate, 0.20 USD market rate), cash only. No need to reserve in advance and very few visitors generally. Driving time from downtown Beirut is about 1 hour. Restrooms are available inside the area (right behind the entry point).
Morereally nice citadel
So much history in this magical place in Lebanon
Amazing place for sightseeing with lots of amenities, restaurants, old citadel, beach etc. You name. A good place to spend your day
MoreWell, the main point, is that I do not feel the citadel to be marvelous in what it has to present. For a little bit of history, the castle was built in 12th century by the crusaders.
MoreNice touristic destination situated in JbeilOne of the 1st Historical places in Lebanon.A Must visit.
MoreIt was a good trip with nice view. It could have been better if we visited it before sunset because of the hot weather.
MoreAmazing! The view and atmosphere is great... Old history and the view is incredible. The most beautiful place in Lebanon is Byblos. I love Lebanon ❤️For more new places follow me.
MoreSuperbly preserved and full of history.
Breathtaking views from the castle. To be able to see something so old still stand and be able to experience it, is just amazing! Definitely recommend a visit if youre in Lebanon. Just get there early so you can take your time going to all the levels.
MoreUnbelievable how beautiful this place is. The history is mind blowing, the views of the sea is breathtaking as well.My ancestors make me proud :)
MoreVery beautiful and superb archaeological site! Highly recommended to visit
A very important historical site and a witness to 5000 year old history from phoenicians to crusaders . A very beautiful citadel with beautiful panoramic views from atop of the old city and port. Not to be missed.
MoreSo much history! Definately recommend paying a guide to talk you through the history of the place. A must visit!
MoreThe castle was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century from indigenous limestone and the remains of Roman structures. Its an amazing piece of history, and if you plan to visit make sure you ask of the guide Yazid he knows the history very well.
MorePay a small fee to enter the archaeological site of Byblos.First, check the Castle built by the crusaders in the 12th century. From the top, youll see a breathtaking view of Byblos and the Mediterranean sea! Then, walk in the surrounding field where youll find Phoenicians, Egyptian and Roman ruins! Finally, discover Byblos most iconic and photographed house!
MoreByblos is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Approximately 45 km from Beirut. Beautiful city! unmissable. Worth a visit and return if you are in Beirut. Taxi around 15 euros. (Around 2/3 hours to visit the whole city).
MoreThis is just marvelous, i spent around 2 hours at this place and then roam around the whole downtown and its very clean, green and felt amazing.
MoreReally worth it to go and see a place with too much to tell us. If you enjoy a culture trip, you must to go there and see about the Phoenicians. The entrance fee is expensive, 8 thousand Lebanese pounds per adult. I have been there on January 1 and they were opened. You can enjoy the cute city Byblos.
Morethis castle is amazing and Byblos is fantastic, make sure you dedicate a whole day for this city and reach the castle before sunset, so you can capture the best views ever ;)
MoreCool visit. Worth the day trip fromBeirut. Lots of nice lunch places nearby either at the marina or in the Souk area.
MoreUnreal views and a really well kept and clean site. Byblos was a cool little town and this castle was a total gem. Give yourself at least 30 minutes to walk around the grounds.
MoreByblos citadel is an archeological site showcasing the history of this city which is known as one of the oldest human settlements discovered so far. With a history of more than 8,000 years, Byblos has been part of important events through the ages. One of the most prominent one is that the city - which was a phoenician city in the past - is believed to be the birthplace of the phoenician alphabet.Expect to take 1h30-2h00 to visit the whole place, including the museum within the fort.
MoreThis place was great, climbing through the ancient ruins gives you a sense of what live was like 1000s of years ago. The architecture, building style and construction is amazing
Morefrom the crusader area. a place that take you to a time traveling moment where you can imagine the guards on windows. patroling troops in the courtyard.prisoners downstairs.a general in his main office.very awesome place to visit and share picture with magnificent view over the sea.
MoreSuch a very good historical landmark. A must-see when visiting Lebanon. The small museum inside the citadel is enriching and well organized. Only complaint is that I wouldn’t liked to have more signs explaining what each structure meant and what they were used in the old times. For example, there are rooms built with rocks that have no explanation around them. Overall, as a fan of history, I really enjoyed my time.
MoreThere are much finer examples of Roman ruins throughout Europe and the Middle East (Jerash in Jordan being a must see if this interests you). Byblos may well have historical significance, however the ruins that have survived to this day are nothing more than the outlines of former buildings.
MoreMost amazing and historical place in the world. Everyone in the world should have it on the bucket list. Best place really.
MoreWe spent two days exploring the archeological sites of Byblos. There is a lot there and it is all very interesting, with about 7000 years of history across the one site. It is definitely worth the time to explore properly and the town is a very nice place to stay for a few days. The site does suffer terribly from the appalling amount of rubbish that the Lebanese seem to just throw anywhere without regard for the environment - but if it bothers you do what we did and pick it up and put it in the bins.
MoreThe rain gods did not smile friendly only us when we visited Byblos; in fact, it hailed for a solid 30 minutes BUT we were blessed with about 30 minutes of relatively clear weather to explore the site and admire the lightning showcase on the horizon out to sea. What a remarkable piece of history especially when you stop at the top of the citadel, survey the land and transport yourself back to medieval and ancient times
MoreOldest continually inhabited city in the World, The citadel includes ruins dating back 8000 years from the Bronze age, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. I recommend to take the guided tour and to visit the museum. It needs easily +4 hrs (the tour about 45 minutes). The city is magical, it feels like one is walking between the past and the present. I recommend to visit it during the summer, to see the festivals and during Christmas to see the marvelous decorations. Byblos is worldwide famous for their brilliant Christmas trees, they always makes it to the top 10 best trees. Food is amazing, especially fish dishes.
MoreOne of the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Entrance is very cheap and you are free to wonder the ruins. There is a small museum inside.
MoreAmazing! The view and atmosphere is great... Old history and the view is incredible. The most beautiful place in Lebanon is Byblos. ( my opinion)
MoreOne of the must sees when visiting Byblos. Frankly there isn’t much to see in Byblos asides this and the old souqs. I wish they had an English speaking tour guide as that might have made the tour more structured and informative rather than leaving tourists to wander about by themselves.
MoreIts a most beautiful place to visit in Lebanon. Its a historic place that is till fully intact. Its better to take a guide with you if you are not sure of the history of the place. The view from the top of the castle is also mesmerizing. And also dont miss the Lebanese cusine from on of the port facing restaurants.
MoreI dont know if it was amazing visit due to the amazing time, the Christmas vibes everywhere fun and celebrations or Byblos always nice city... but what I am sure of is that was most beautiful sunset I ever seen in my life.
MoreGreat history behind byblos citadel. Thousands of years old palace. Oldest ancient city in the history around 8000years. Recommend to take a guide tour when visit so that they can explain the historical stories. Great sea view from palace top roof.
MoreAwesome historical place, wonderful ancient city, sculptures and beautiful sea view and mountain view at the same time, advise to go and discover
MoreThe city is considered the oldest continuously inhabited in the world. It has more than 8000 years of history. Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Ottoman Turks, and French have all passed through here. The citadel still features the Medieval Crusader castle. The historic center is charming and with great choices of restaurants and cafes. One of the most charming cities in Lebanon.
MoreBeautiful scenic ruins, deceptively small. A proper walk around, and to read all information displays will take you good couple of hours. Guided walks also available. Amazing setting of this, one of the oldest settlements in the world.
MoreA must see for the history buffs this place has seen 17 different civilization and from this port the originally called Phoenician went around the Mediterranean importing and exporting goods. Fascinating history what you will see are the original Phoenician town the Roman ruins and the crusade caste ...get a guided tour around 25$ its worth it as you will understand what you see . It will take you about an hour and a half
MoreIts a castle, but truly not a good looking one.But no comments its an Antique which well preserved. You will get a amazing sunset view and enjoy the breeze and also you can get the entire city view. In its Museum mostly photos are displayed of the antiques which is placed in Nation Museum of Lebanon, do check it out. Timing say closed at 18, but they close at 16, really disappointed. So arrange your plan accordingly.
