Bunratty West, Bunratty, Co. Clare, Ireland, Sionainn
A 15th-century castle and living 19th-century village bring the periods alive at this family museum.
I love a historical site who will let you poke around the nooks and crannies. Short of letting you sit in the Solarium (which is at the top of one of the towers, check it out), thats what you get here.I spent 2 hours curiously walking up and down all the stairs, opening and closing doors, poking around see whats behind each. Think back to what folks must have lived like in the castle and the surrounding reenactment village.A bit of Irish history education and some good photos will be had by most, short of the likely bored teen.
Great experience worth the visit. Castle still in great shape plus the dinner experience is amazing.
We visited this place last Saturday. It was a fantastic place with a great atmosphere. We ordered two hot chocolates, 1 smaller piece of cake and a large piece of black forest gateau. We were charged €18.95 for both. The black forest gateau was dry, bland and almost tasteless. I know what a proper one tastes like. I was very disappointed. Otherwise I would have given this rating 5 stars. Ireland can do better than this.
Our second visit to Bunratty Castle! Its a very lovely, well done visit to an old Irish castle. The castle is beautifully maintained and the folk park has lots to see, do, and learn about life in a castle compound. The shops inside the park are great (we especially love the pottery shop), and the food is good as well.
Great display of life in the 1800s in Ireland. Enjoyed the scenery while walking the streets and roads.
Cool place to check out. This castle still had it set up from the old times. Lots to see and do here. Would highly recommend.
Worth the visit! To complete the full take you will need around 2 hours. There are a lot of gift shop, food trucks and pubs in the area. So, if you’d like to have a full irish experience I’ll suggest to book the full afternoon for your visit.
Loved going to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park! Had things to do for all ages and interests. The trail tour was super cute with the addition of the fairy walk. Would definitely recommend coming here if you’re looking for something to do for a few hours on your trip to Ireland.
Playground very nice...probably more suited to older kids. Stairs in castle bit tough to move through with small kids. Food in the cafe was OK but pricey. Should have gone to JP Clarkes up the road. Still a great visit and would recommend.
Good fun! Entertainment is good. A true 13th century castle. Food is nothing special. But thats not why you go.
Our family really enjoyed ourselves. It was a hot day but there were enough trees to keep us cool. The castle itself was impressive but the historical village was a great learning experience for the whole family. I’m very glad we went on our last day in Ireland.
Great place to visit for all ages. Had food which was nice and not expensive. There is a big playground for the little ones, lots of bathrooms spread around. A few little Shops, and you can go into most of the houses. Lovely family day out. Staff are very friendly too.
Very beautiful, makes you feel like you were in medieval times. Also lovely for kids. We enjoyed i a lot.
A lovely historical site loaded with information. The castle and fold park are across the street from the hotel. A great way to spend a few hours or half a day. Great places to eat nearby.
We loved our time here. The history in the houses and the castle are amazing. We spent hours here and even though it was a very wet day we loved the experience. The staff were very nice and helpful. The place is very big with lots to see. The price for admission was well worth it as you can easily spend the whole day exploring the park and castle. Brilliant we loved it.
The coach loads of student groups ruined it for us. Trying to go up a narrow spiral staircase thats meant to be two way was a nightmare as groups of 30-40 teens pushed past along with their adult chaperones. And then a different group pushed past again on the way back down. And then they were doing some sort of loud cheer/chant in the very small space at the top. Having someone that holds people at the bottom and the top would make it quicker, safer, and way more pleasant. Tickets cost enough that there should be some proper management. Even outside of the castle, there was disrespectful behavior all around like touching animals youre not supposed to touch, sitting on the equipment made for small children, etc. The grounds seemed cool, but we just couldnt appreciate it.
Very nice place, takes about 2 hours to go through. Its nice for kids too.
Not just for kids! Not many people when we were there so really calm and relaxing visit. Great to see historic sites of the castle but also how the rest(mostpeople lived ie very compactly.
Well worth a visit.Kids will also enjoy it.Large carpark. Not expensive to enter.See everything in the castle first. Then follow the map around the folk park. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable.Musicians wonderful. Then a nice cuppa and cake.
Awesome experience! So well worth it! The castle is very well organized with staff throughout to help with questions and history tales. Neat and tidy, with well preserved antiques on display (hard to believe that some are 500-600 yrs old!!The folk village is beautiful - well thought and planned out, the musicians playing all over make it such an authentic experience! We spend hours walking the trails - the fairies, the gardens, the mills... Highly recommend!
Disappointed. When we saw the castle we were really impressed and when we found out it had a folk park we were really looking forward to visiting. However, history was a bit mixed up. The tour guides you saw walking around were wearing inaccurate dress. I dont think velour and elastic were invented in medieval times. Saw some polyester in an 19th century cottage too. Most cottages were a very similar layout. Would have been good to see more time periods and more authentic dress and consistency in periods.Kids seemed to love it. Plenty for them to do. We spent a good 3 hours and it was pouring down.
Very nice experience seeing all the old buildings how the the people use too live mainly on the land just a few cows and sheep. Then moving up in the years to the 1930 & 1940 the schools,Dr surgery pubs and lots of other shops very nice to look back on how times have changed very interesting ☺️
Cool are. More of a viewing museum than interactive. I was really hoping they would have more townspeople in character. But fun to see how things looked back in the day. Lots of the houses had a terrible smell from whatever was burning. It made it hard to go in.
A cool experience with very talented performers. The food was just okay, but the wine was plentiful. You must enter via a narrow spiral stairway and exit the same way. There were at least 5 bus loads of people crammed into the room. I couldn’t help but be concerned that if there were to be a fire, we’d never all get out alive.
This B&B room was great but the ensuite left much to be desired! Just kidding. Bunratty Castle is one of my favorites in Ireland. The Music Festival and Dinners are worth attending and the whole property is lovingly maintained.
Great place to Check out with family. Kids love it but lots of stair climbing to see all of the castle!
Dinner and a show in Bunratty Castle. Performers were very good, and food was okay. Overall a nice experience, but a bit crowded.
Very wonderful I highly recommend it!It has everything you could want in one place! The staff are very freindly and hard working.IThe banquet is exquisite the performers top rate!
Old historic castle with beautiful old houses around the castle.. Tea rooms n shops were available there.
This is a worthwhile stop. Its a little touristy and there are a lot of buses that stop too, but renovated castle is amazing and all the houses are interesting too. Make sure you get as far as the walled garden.
Nice place ... Though I didnt visit the whole castle, but there I went for dinner which will be organised inside castle. It was a lovely evening with a nice welcome drink and food . Vegetarian and vegan also gets tasty food though options are lesser than non veg but you will be full..There are Beautiful artists who sings dances and narrates. They will only serve food as well.. its a must visit place if you are in Limerick or planning to go to Limerick. See the castle and have a royal meal.
This castle is very complete with artifacts that make you feel like you’ve gone back in time! The detail they put into everything, especially the folk town is incredible! They even burn peat in the houses make it a multi sensory experience!
Brilliant place to visit, great for all the family. Huge history. Be aware that access to the actual castle stops at 4pm. But a great place to visit
Great place to visit with family and friends. The visit kept us all occupied for nearly 4 hrs. Can walk through the restored castle and village and get a feel for what life was like in the 1500s. Good adventure for children and educational for the young and the old. Refreshments and food are available on site to buy and the the Bunratty shop offers lots of momentos for everyone. Many B&Bs in the area too.
Really nice visit, all the guests loved it and the banquet is well worth doing as staff and all concerned really do go all out to make the experience.Plenty parking, gift shop, cafe and toilets on site
The castle itself is not so big but the whole area around it is really beautiful, its a good experience.
I love this place. I wish I had more time there. I could have spent hours there. Absolutely gorgeous. So much to see. Great gift shop too.
This is a great place for 9 months to 90 year olds for sure.We stayed at a B&B right down the road so started bright and early and it took best part of the day to go around and see the whole area.
Bunratty is the most beautiful place for a family day out the castle its self is amazing and the village its lovely to be able to go inside all the houses so much to do and see well worth a visit and would highly recommend you could literally spend the day there exploring
Great place to look around and its dog friendly too
Great experience, Beautiful castle, would definitely recommend you ad this to your schedule, great for pics, also you can find food and a couple of stores when you stop here,
Beautiful castle and well kept. The grounds around the castle were beautiful too. We booked our tickets online for the end of the day and didn’t realize there was a banquet taking place shortly. They rushed us in, being that we are from the States, and we received a personal tour from Paul and Anje. These two were lovely, helpful and very informative. They went above and beyond to make our visit so memorable. Thanks!!
This was a wonderful experience, they do their best to bring you back in time to a mideval era and treat you as Lords and Ladys for the evening. Or visit included music, dancing, mead, food, and entertainment all in one. I would have given them 5 stars but they lacked options for those that are not fans of wine or have certain food restrictions. You should see this place for yourselves, it is still a wonderful experience indeed!
We loved walking around Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. We shared our experience with a global Heygo audience. Seeing how people lived in old Ireland was fascinating. Wonderful staff and plenty to keep you busy for hours. Great facilities for families, groups or adults.
My family and I have had a membership here since our first child was born in 2010… it’s a fantastic place anytime of year! It’s great for walking, exploring, learning and bring guests! Can’t recommend this place enough.Today was our first day back since COVID, so we went for a nice long walk and just hung out - fantastic!
Yes, you should visit this place. It is worth it. Amazingly preserved 15th century castle. The rooms are very well maintained and furnished. Beyond the castle, the park is actually a village/ town replica and the houses there are lovely too. The furniture and decorations do a good job taking you back in time and imagining olden Irish day to day life. Due to Covid not everything was opened, but even so it was well worth it. Oh…the petting zoo and the Irish wolfhounds are a lovely bonus.
Highly recommend the Bunratty Banquet in the evenings. You must pre-book though.🍖🍷🤩You may even get chosen to be the Lord & Lady of Bunratty for the night 👑🤫
We had a lovely time at bunratty, went to see Santa with our grandkids, it was a very perfessional experience and everything was kept within safe distance with plenty of hand sanitising stations around. There was lots to see and we went on a train with the kids they had great fun
I love this place, its a fantastic day out for everyone families included. The site gives you a great insight into life in old Ireland, both from the perspective of the castle which is fascinating and the old homes and businesses that you can visit and explore. Its grants a unique perspective on how different life was for our ancestors. The site is very big but easily walkable over the course of a few hours. The food here is also lovely and the kids play park is brilliant too. Absolutely worth a visit.
This is a nice little historical stop. The castle is beautiful and thoughtfully decorated with authentic, period antiques. The grounds and village are a wonderful way to walk through history as well. We really enjoyed all the animals and the faerie trail too!
