Budapest, Szent György tér 2, 1014 Hungary, Budapest
Exhibitions on life in Budapest from Roman times to the present day in splendid palatial rooms.
Well presented and really interesting museum. We spent about two hours here but could have stayed a lot longer.
The complex was not the most straight forward to get around. The museums themselves were nice, but school children made some of the exhibits a bit challenging (loud)
Wealth of history. Loved it
I would not spend 4500 HUF for it, not that interesting. Only maybe interior of old castle will be interesting for you.
We learned so much about Hungarys history and its people and its architecture. Worth visiting, walking around, reading and taking it all in. The Castle district is a work in progress and is/will be Budapests pride. Hauszmann was a great architect.
The exhibition on the 1st floor is awesome: great content, you can learn a lot about history of the Hungary and spend hours there!- Other floors (-2,-1,0are about the history of the building, imho doesnt worth attention at all.
Just no. Went in, its a mess, only copies, some explanations. In the end, we did not even finish because the museum just does not give the willingness to.
It just doesnt do a good job interacting with people leave why should we care taste in the mouth.. As a PS you have an extra bit but it not obvious when you buy the tickets so you only know when you are getting refused entry.
Quite rich and entertaining presentation of both Hungarian history through the everyday life of Budapest over the past centuries. In the lesser floors the medieval exhibition is really interesting considering that its curator was Gyorgy Terei, an archeologist. We also had the chance to hear a presentation from him.
You can spend a whole day reading about the history of Budapest or just make a quick tour in 2 hours. There is a musical experience area where you can play the instruments and one section offers modern interactive fun experience.
Collection and info in general are great but geez if feels like a maze. Not enough signs, no sense of direction, lack of information about temp exhibits that need to be purchased separately. Museum itself is really nice, admin seems to be lacking though.
Just glorious lovely architecture!
Nice and elegant museum with nice exhibits. The lady at the ticket office was attentive and kind to me.
The castle itself is very beautiful and interesting to see. The museum has some interesting stuff, a bit like a maze though very easy to get lost!
It’s an ok museum, there were not a lot of things to see. It is divided in three floors. From the bottom floor you can still go down to see the ruins of the antique castle. Guided tours are also available. You can enter for free with the Budapest card. Closed on Mondays.
The best places in the museum are:1. Saint Stephens hall2. Cellars3. ChapelThe Saint Stephens hall is wonderful😍On National holidays there will be a long queue if you would like to visit Saint Stephens hall.
One of the best history museums Ive ever been to. Buda Castle itself is very impressive, but the museum was world class; the exhibits are all staged in the original excavated sections of the castle, so as you move lower you get into the original parts of the building that went up in the 14th century. How cool to learn about how water was brought into the castle while standing in one of the original underground cisterns. This is definitely a must see attraction when visiting Budapest, especially if you enjoy history like me!
One of the most amazing cultural and unique place in Europe the Buda Castle
Nice museum to visit. The audio tour is mandatory to understand all items. Several stories with stairs and elevators. Gives you a good understanding of the history of Hungary, Budapest and the Palace.
It was a nice thing to have done, it was cool to read about the history from Budapast almost till the day of today. The price is great for what you get, really a trip worthy for museum lovers.
My girlfriend says its a very nice museum. I am not a man of culture so I will trust her. Jokes aside its a cool place to visit, not entirely sure how the pricing works for certain areas on the higher floors.
Once youre in Buda Castle you must visit the History Museum. You will see and learn the history of the city. You will find the traditional clothes and many beautiful sculptures. Totally worth the visit!
Very interesting. One can learn about the entire history of Budapest in an interesting way.
A very thorough and informative experience that charts the history of Budapest. I had no idea just how turbulent a history it has had through the ages. The reconstructed areas, discovered during the recent archeological digs, are excellent.
I was expecting to learn a lot about the history of Budapest and Hungary. However this museum is 80% focused on the castles history. Expect many artefacts and such. For me this was not interesting.
Well worth a visit
Interesting to get some information about the city but it was a bit of information ocerload which made the story of the city hard to follow. Perhaps this is just the nature of the citys history but it felt a bit all over the place. Didnt look around the rest of the museum other than the Budapest history section but it seemed like quite a large museum so a reasonable entry fee (~5GBP)
Fascinating place to visitThe castle has been built destroyed and rebuilt so many times in history and they are rebuilding it again
Interesting Turkish-Hungary history
Amazing place, MUST VISIT. So much history.
Interesting museum with lots of exhibitions. Some of the exhibitions on the upper floors were closed which was a bit of a shame. Would have also liked to see more royalty exhibitions. Overall not bad for the price we paid. They also had student tickets for under 26 year olds which was a bonus
Im sure the Palace part is very beautiful but for lack of sufficient explanation, I missed the guided tour, paid for, they dont want me to move on to the next one, allow me to come back, or reimburse me. Scandalous. The place is a maze, in the bad sense of the word, you can easily miss rooms. So Im evaluating my experience, not the place.
Average museum. A couple of exhibitions, without many interesting artifacts/items. Not very tourist friendly. Most of the text there is in hungarian, navigation helpers are non-existent and many of the rooms are locked or temporarily closed. Budapest has better other museums for visit.
Huge museum which offers a very interesting journey throughout the different periods of Hungarian history. The only disadvantage was that the musem has a funny way of marking the correct direction flow. I strongly advise studying the map of the museum not to miss any rooms.
Many interesting exhibitions, especially the St Stephen exhibition.
Very interesting museum, great exhibits showing the progress of Hungary throughout the ages. The castle is also huge and a great place to walk around and to experience.
Average museum excibits - recomended mainly for specific interest in museums. Quite few excibitions, many ladders, maps should be presented in beginning instead on the final of the route. Recommend only if you have plenty of time. Certainly other areas of Budapest of greater interest exist
Very informative and clear exhibitions and information on the history of the castle. Not the clearest layout with the entrance on -2 level and the maps showing each exhibition up on 1 and 2 levels. The whole thing feels like it peters out as you head upstairs but the gothic statue collection and the ‘1000 years of Budapest’ exhibit upstairs are worth it.
Very confusing place! Ive been to hundreds of museums and, apart from Budapest, never felt so lostThe room are not numbered, you are provided with a "map" and good luck finding your way with that, Im sure I missed a lot of the exhibition because the curation is so chaoticIn terms of artefacts there is hardly anything here, a few marble elements and some limestone allegedly from the 15th century, I dont know if those are replica or originalsThe staff hardly know any foreign languages so they will not be able to help with anything, the price of the ticket at 10 freaking euros if you want to take pictures is outrageous
Cool museum/labyrinth of hidden spots. During my visit there was an amazing exhibition about the Nomadic peoples. Super cool
When I visited, parts of the museum were closed due to renovation and some objects missing due to being on loan. Nevertheless I still enjoyed the remaining exhibitions. In particular, the 1000 years of Budapest history exhibition was well laid out and informative. Also visitors should note that they need to pay for a photo pass to take photos. Not knowing this, I was approached by an attendant who politely informed me and then joked that he would let me take one more photo for free so I should choose wisely. This friendly approach by the attendant was greatly appreciated and they deserve commendation.
Nice for a short little walk through if you are not into history
The experience will be more enriched if the Museum was opened. Unfortunately during my visit its closed. My pictures are all from outside the premises. I must say that the place is as grand as to hold a museum inside. So the ratings are based only on the surrounding areas.
Lots of walking to get to but the views are breathtaking from the top of the mountain.
This museum is packed with the history of Budapest from prehistoric era up to the current condition and you could easily spend a few hours here. It is located at the rear area of the castle district; after taking a photo at the fountain of King Matthias, proceed further to the right for about 150 meters and there you go. A permit for photography is needed in the museum.
Great Experiance.Loads of details and information about Hungry, their royalty and the history of the castle.
My wife and I visited. It is worth the visit - theres enough to see, and Budapest has an incredibly interesting history as it "switched sides" so many times. Theres work of art, and you can descend into the basements. The structure itself is beautiful. That said, it really is a shame how badly the museum is set up and run. First off, the closing time is ridiculously early, which causes a lot of people to clog up the museum during the afternoon.Secondly, many of the signs are just to elaborate - too much details. They have written entire novels on the wall, in every room, on every floor - its too much. The great museums of this world are great because they know how to select what is worth showing, order it logically, and present it in such a way that visitors can digest it easily. None of that applies here - the signs are bad, the different floors and the rooms/artefacts within them are order weirdly. You are not making that journey that, say, the Smithsonians let you make.
The museum is in one of the most beautiful castles however it’s the worst managed place. It closes at 4pm in winter time despite google says 6p. I got there 3:27pm and the ticketing office still sold me a ticket (half price thoughand then told me they close at 4pm. I had to go in and by 3:48pm I was kicked out, merely spent 20 mins in that museum and when I tried to talk with the people there, they became very nasty!!!! World No.1 WORST MUSEUM!
Unfortunately it was a below average experience for me, perhaps because Ive been to many other history museums. Its certainly an interesting museum but seems to lack the depth offered by similar museums elsewhere.
Not enough depth to satisfy a history buff, and poorly curated. The opportunity to see the mediaeval rooms that have been excavated is great, but the rest of the museum is disappointing. It assumes you already know the history of Hungary and so doesnt explain a lot of crucial points (in both the palace exhibition and the one on the history of Budapest), making it hard to follow the what/why/how. Also, the layout of some sections about the palace is confusing and not chronological. Unless you already know a lot about the history of Hungary or are just interested in seeing the mediaeval palace components, consider whether you really want to come here. They also charge extra if you want to take photos. :-(
