Budapest, Szent György tér 2, 1014 Hungary, Budapest XII. kerület
Palatial venue for the Hungarian National Gallery plus displays from Gothic altars to sculpture.
The Buda Castle rises above the city of Várhegy, the hill of Budapest. The Castle has always had a turbulent history which reflects the different ups and downs of the history of Hungary. Today the Castle, which is often called the Royal Palace, is home to a number of cultural institutes, including two museums: the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest Historical Museum. The castle is made of a number of wings, going from wing A to F, arranged around the Lion Courtyard, which is surrounded by the National Library, the National Gallery, and the Budapest History Museum. The Hungarian National Galleryoccupies four wings of the palace, where there are the artworks made by Hungarian artists, from Middle Age to today. Do not miss a visit to the collections of 1300 and 1400, exhibited in the former throne room. There is also a very accurate collection of Hungarian Romanticist paintings. The National LibraryTo the west of the courtyard, opposite the Gallery, there is the National Library which occupies the F wing of the palace. The Library was founded at the beginning of 1800 by Ferenc Széchényi who donated his private collection which was made of more than 1500 books and manuscripts. Today the library holds a copy of every single book published in Hungary.Budapest History MuseumThe most southern wing of the palace is home to the Budapest History Museum, which covers the history of the city from prehistory to modern days. The museum offers the opportunity to see some ruins and reconstructions of the Medieval palace, including the Gothic chapel and the Knights’ Hall.
Its a great and a spectacular place.I never thought this castle was so big and so huge I really had the moments of fun there.I suggest you visit.
Beautiful castle with lots of instagram spots and picturesque view on Pest side. For making cool photos better to come in the evening, when city lights are on.Also there is a brilliant collection of Hungarian paintings inside
Super amazing and impressive castle. The experience of exploring this magistic place will be in the memory for ever. Strongly recommend to visit from the early morning till the late night... ❤❤❤
I was a little worried about the weather as it rained the night before but the sun stood strong and we were graced with a beautiful view of the city.Entrance to the museum was free due to the public holiday and going up to the top of the tower was not a long wait eitheronce we got to the top we were definitely not disappointed. You do have to be prepared to leave any large bags and coats behind in a free cloakroom. There was about 2/3 minute queue for this. They do allow you to take your phone up through the museum. It may have been because of the public holiday that we were also graced with seeing a short parade outside the main entrance - which was fun and then they stopped for a photo shoot! There are two lifts that will take you up from the bottom to the top which is great for those who are hard of walking or with young families. There was hardly any queue for this. That also steps that can take you up.There are some construction work going on, but this does not take away from any of experience.Definitely worth coming out to see this.We did not buy any food/drinks- so cannot comment on this
A small village enclosed within parts of the old castle walls, Buda Castle is situated with lovely views of both sides of the river and the surrounding hills. The church is a small gothic church with picturesque towers surrounding it on one side by the Fishermans gate, so named from the fact that the fishermen used to live there. Now its a charming spot to enjoy the view.
Lovely castle and a most see tourist attraction.Offering a great panoramic view of Budapest from multiple viewing points.Explore the premises and enjoy the architecture, sculptures and lively garden. You can visit the castle grounds throughout the week at all times, without a ticket. The national gallery and the historic museum have their opening hours and you need to purchase individual ticket for each.
Buda Castle is a must-see landmark when visiting Budapest. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic castle was first constructed in 1265. Later a royal palace was added, now housing the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum, but theres just as much to see around the castle grounds – for free! There’s also bars and you van enjoy sunset there
Astonishing piece of architectural mastery. There is a renovation/redevelopment going on right around the castle, which may be unpleasant for tourists now but in a few years it will be a centerpiece of historic importance.
Buda Castle is a beautiful place where one can feel the once grandeur of Hungarian royalty. The Soviet renovation has changed the interior to a more simple look, but splendid nonetheless.Tip: Teachers, with a valid educator ID, can visit the museum fee free.
You can visit this castle every day of the week, thus I recommend not to go on mondays since the national gallery and the historic museum, which are located into the castle, are closed. You can enjoy a great view on the city once you get there. You can also see the famous changing of the guard in front of the office of the prime minister.
Going up here was really exhausting for us as we came up on foot. For those that dont like walking they is teleferic that will leave you up. The views here are breath taking. They is a nice spot to take pictures with the whole of Budapest behind you. They is a bar also available.
It was not a very pleasant experience. Getting to the place was very unclear. A bridge we had to cross was closed, transportation that is not always understood and the high cost of a cable car. In the end, we arrived at the museum, we were asked to pay for entrance to the museum without being able to explain which exhibition we were going to and when we did enter, we discovered that there was no information written not only in Hungarian, but not in any other language. Very long, disorganized and very tiring, requires 3-4 hours to go through everything calmly.
THE BEST HISTORICAL WALK-Take a walk all the way up to the castle or buy a cheap ticket to get there with the teleferik.-Amazing monuments, gardens, paths and fountains within the castle. Free entrance-Beautiful buildings make you believe you got back to the past.-The view is awesome from up there.-Get there with bus, train, lime or taxi.-You can eat, drink and buy some souvenirs from there too-There is a museum inside the castle. Go take a look
Really nice place with an art gallery. This is a really nice place to rest a bit before you continue to Bastion or the city center. If you are looking for a place to park nearby, just look at four streets to the east and you will find big parking with lots of free spots. However, you will need to walk for about 15-20 minutes. It is worthy. Trust me.
Great views of Budapest, we used the castle tour bus to get around as its mostly up hill didnt visit the exhibitions but had a good walk around
Nice place to stroll around. Its at walkable distance from the Fishermans Bastion. Nice view of the Danube river and Parliament building.
What a beautiful, magnificent building. Via public transport we ended up at the back of the castle and at 40 degrees celsius were not looking forward to the climb to the top. Happily surprised we were when we found a couple of elevators that took us immediately to the center of the castle. So keep an eye out for those
Its not really a castle and it dosnt look like a stately home either. It just looks like a normal old building anywhere in Europe. Its a shame really when you think this city has the most beautiful parliament building in Europe. Theres lots of construction going on with new buildings being added to it.The views are the only good thing about visiting here. The staff here are not just devoid of any customer service, theyre just rude. I love castles and beautiful historical buildings, but this unfortunately is neither.....
We didnt have time to go in, the buildings are interesting and the views from the top are beautiful. Some parts of the yard and the caste were under construction. We went there on foot but one can use the Funicular, it seems fun.
Buda castle is must visit place in Budapest. It is elevated above rest of the town and offers great panoramic views of town, river Danube and Hungarian parliament building across the river.Entry to the district is free with a number of accessibility options such as escalators, elevators, funicular railway as well as steps. The museums, cathedral, viewing terrace of fishermans bastion and galleries above the castle need a ticket to buy. At a few places there is a guide map displayed but almost no directional signs are seen.At many locations construction and maintenance work is going on.Overall maintenance and upkeep is good. The place was full of visitors despite the immense heat (36°Con the day of our visit.
Definitely the place to see over the City. Loads of places to sit with your picnic and just gaze at its history. It gets busy but not rammed, at least not this Spring. Not much shade, but places to rest like the park.
It was a great experience to visit this big Castel. Its something magnificent. The view from there is breathtaking also. I highly recommend to visit.
Amazing place to visit. Even and children were excited. There were many monuments, fountains and sculptures. To the top we went by lift and it was amazing experience. You can see Budapest and Danube. Must visit if you are in Budapest.
Once youre in Budapest you can not miss this place! If you are lucky you will see soldiers orchestra! The view from here is beautiful! Walk around the castle to see everything!
Buda castle on the buda side is a must visit, a place where you can see all of budapest so its a great view especially around sunset.Entrance to the gardens is free of charge but you need to pay to enter the castle. The walk down from the castle is enjoyable and you will reach the riverside once down the hill.
Mesmerizing place to explore. The top viewing point was so awesome and whole city can be seen from there. Be ready to have water bottle with you if you are visiting in summer. Sunset from the top is the best..!
Museums aren’t my preference for tourism but the architecture is phenomenal. It would be great if there were more benches so that people don’t sit on the monuments obstructing their view.
Beautiful palace in a beautiful city. It is like a fairy tale, across the bridge in the Danube. But the walk is long, and the castle is uphill; although there are that lovely gardens on the way, that distance under the sun can be daunting. From Pest can be easily one hour or more walking -in my experience, because the chain bridge was closed- so it may be a good idea buying tickets for the tourist bus or hiring a taxi. Up in the castle, there are restrooms and many little cute restaurants. Not to be missed in Budapest.
Absolutely amazing. The buildings are huge and the views are stunning. From one side, you can have a good view of budapest.I didnt enter the building/ museum. I do plan on visiting next time.Lovely place to visit and have a walk around. Be prepared to walk up to the castle 😆, however, I did find a lift that you can take to get up/ down. There are places to eat and but drinks around the castle also.
Must see in Budapest. You will have a great view to Pest side and its easy to reach by foot or with bus. You can take the furnica up but I suggest you to walk up and enjoy the view and gardens and secret places of the Castle.
Amazing castle absolutely massive, loads to see and amazing views of the city from certain points on the castle. We got lucky and saw security riding horses.I recommend going the whole castle as each area has its own unique parts to it
So beautiful! Absolutely a must-see in Budapest. The architecture is stunning and the castle grounds are lovely to walk around on a nice, sunny day. There are great views of the city from above on the castle’s balconies, also. The few staff that we spoke to were very kind too which was a pleasant bonus!
The buildings are beautiful. It actually is made up of several annexes, which in turn are various museums. We visited the National Gallery for a temporary exhibition. Beautifully lit up at night, recommend going at dusk, lot less people. Cafes on site too.
If you visiting during the spring in the evenings then carry an extra coat, its pretty cold and windy up there. But for some of the best view of Budapest, its worth visiting.
Great tourist spot to visit. It is located near ‘Fisherman Bastion’ and ‘Mathias Church’. Easy to reach, it’s offering a complete experience thorough part of Hungarian history, along with a great view of Danube and Budapest City! I do recommend!
This the Main attraction when you came here in Budapest. This is Situated un Buda side. There are many building inside to visit. They have side walks as well. Many of the building are under renovation. But you can see them from Outside.
Magical and majestic! You can easily explore this phenomenal castle all day. Still, it wont be enough - youll want to come back the next day. Great place for a walk, for photos, for rest. Unique atmosphere, so beautiful and magnetic. Incredible panoramic views of the Danube and Pest!
Honestly no words to describe this beautiful site. This is worth a visit to anyone, whether during the day or the night, it is a spectacular sight to behold. All I can say is, check it out for yourselves. The views will absolutely rock your world and if youre like me and love taking pictures, then prepare to take over a dozen on the awesome panoramic views.
This place is stunning and beautiful day and night. You should visit twice at least when the lightening changes. Also, you can see the pest side perfectly.
Very impressive castle. When me and my girlfriend went we walked up to to see it in all its glory. Then once at the top you can walk all around a wooden promenade which is sign posted. Then you can get the train stair lift down for a small price which I would recommend.
Amazing! Both the castle outside but also the history museum and national gallery inside the buildings. Be sure to go also toward the behind side (not just the front facing the Danube). Looks wonderful also by night.
Loved they have plenty of options, lot of places was under contraction and weren’t available. Was pretty cold (January after all)And walking in it felt like being part of history, the view the city is great. Not very high but is good
It is a very nice castle museum. I particularly liked the exposition of the Hungarian painting of the XVIIIe century which is located on the second floor if my memory is correct. The building is beautiful and the view from the cupola is great. It gives a good overview of the city and its buildings.
The Castle district area offers a wide range of historical venues including museums and the views of the Danube and the Parliament building are beautiful. Construction and renovations are continuously upgrading the complex.
Such an amazing place to visit. Unfortunately the funicular is not working until mid Jan but the walk up the hill is really acceptable, not tiring at all.We walked around & took many pictures. Enjoyed the architecture & the gardens as well as the view overlooking the Danube to the Pest side.
Absolutely amazing experience. Something very unique in Europe. You must visit during day and night to appreciate the beauty and views. Very well renovated and maintained castle. Had the opportunity to visiting during Xmas. Beautifully lighted Budapest. Kudos to whoever in charge!
It is an amazing builng or I should say combo of buildings. Such a special architecture, amazing view, very special historical monument. It is worth having a walk around and see a series of special buildings in this area. For example, the recently renovated stable of the castle. This was my second time in Budapest an hence the castle, and I was still amazed
A lovely place to visit with much of historical information, including photographs, statues, and architecture. Wear comfortable shoes because this is a large area to roam around in, and admission to the museum requires the purchase of a ticket. Free entry to Castle.
Simply amazing. Its what you must see when you visit Budapest. Unfortunately, though, we visited it, last week and it was full with workers everywhere. Hopefully, this was because they were getting ready for Christmas, otherwise, they should end their works really soon, it was a bummer. Other than that, its a wonderful place. You can get there with the metro or even on foot. The view is breathtaking. Really pretty place.
