Co. Meath, Ireland, Drogheda
Renowned prehistoric landscape dominated by 3 neolithic passage tombs, plus 90 further monuments.
We bought tickets the day before. The interpretive center before the site is a must. The interpretive center is very well done and has lots of good, relevant Info. The cafe was just okay, i think our family annoyed the workers with our slow decisions. The experience itself was wonderful. The bus drivers were very nice. The tour guide was nice. They moved us along at a good place and kept everything moving. All 4 of us really enjoyed this experience.
Everything went out very smooth and the guides were so nice. They made the trip even more fascinating. I wished I could stay there all day and listen to what they were saying. I recommend this trip if you are fascinated by history.
Amazing visits to both Knowth and New Grange. Guide at Knoth was one of the speakers Ive ever heard in an educational context. She was awesome.
Great experience. Something different, easy and interesting to do in Ireland.
This was one of my favorite sites in Ireland. Its a must-do if you are into history. Entry is reservation only for specific time slots so be sure to book in advance on the website. The tour was well-organized and on-time. Staff was courteous. Our guide into the tomb was so knowledgeable and made the experience very entertaining. Great experience
Book your tickets in advance! If you plan to do the tour of two sites plus Newgrange chamber entrance, plan for a ~3 hour visit.
Amazing however the archeologists that decided how to rebuild this structure completely disagreed with the archeologists that decided how to rebuild Knowth. 180 degrees different. This kind of lets you know that it’s all a guess.
I am a driver from Carrig Tours. We had an elderly disabled lady in our small group visiting Brú na Bóinne. We had the good fortune to meet an OPW bus driver by the name of Brian who drove the ladies to the sights. I want to say that he could not have done more to assist that lady and take care of her comfort and well-being. I can report that she said he made the whole trip for her . I want to say that he is an incredible ambassador for your facility and Ireland. He absolutely deserves to be acknowledged for his professionalism and sincere kindness.Brendan Ó Gorman
Well worth paying for the guided tour! The visitors centre is well thought out, with interesting interactive features and all the information you need to know about the passage tombs. The cafeteria had great food and a wide selection of beverages and pastries.Seeing the actual tombs themselves was incredible. Highly recommended!
A mandatory location for people interested in history, archeologicy and anthropology. Probably the oldest mankind monument on Earth (with Stonehenge)
Excellent and well preserved and maintained megalithic tomb site. I didnt go inside because of claustrophobia. Beautiful vista of the Boynw valley and fields.
Absolutely amazing experience, they really took care to involve everyone and explain everything, a gorgeous visitor center with all excellent facilities, separated baby changing room, a bottle refill station right next to the door that takes you to the buses who tour the sites, a big gift shop and a wonderful café/restaurant. A thorough exhibition explaining everything before you go on to the sites, worth every penny for this incredible part of History! The tour guides and bus drivers are all super kind and friendly but you MUST buy the tickets with at least one week advance or you wont be able to go.
A beautiful and spiritual place to visit. So many things to see and do. A very nice gift shop along with a very tasty restaurant.Rock formations were amazing. A great experience for young and old.
STRONGLY recommend booking ticket online before attending however the displays in the visitors centre are excellent and interesting. The cafe downstairs was busy but there was a good selection. The gift shop was brilliant.
Great 1/2 day spent at the tombs.
You must have an advance ticket during the summer months. They are sold out for 5 days now. If your coming to Ireland this is a most along with giant causeway and the cliffs of Mohr
Well worth a vist but be sure to book your tickets in advance. Tours are 24 per group and include the visitor center, plenty of time at Knowth to look around at the rock art and get on top of the main monument, and Newgrange where you get to go inside in groups of 12. The passage to the chamber is tight, low, and requires turning sideways at one point. Once you reach the chamber there is plenty of space.A cafe, gift shop, and toilets are avaliable at the visitor center. There are also toilets near the monuments. Make sure to speak with the guides as they are happy to share what they can and will help improve your visit.
The visitors center had great exhibits as well as a good Cafe. The guide for the tour of the mound was knowledgeable and engaging. This was an excellent place to visit.
This is truly one of the best kept secrets in Ireland. The Brú na Bóinne visitor center is off the beaten path in County Meath, with a world class mini-museum about the ancient history of the Boyne valley and the regions numerous megalithic monuments. There are interactive exhibits, interesting to both children and adults, and a wonderful restaurant and cafe. To fully take in the experience though you must book timed tickets to guarantee you can get bused out to the ancient passage tombs of Newgrange and Knowth. Tix can be purchased online at the visitor center website 30 days in advance. Of the options the "Newgrange with inner chamber entry" is the best, and well worth the cost, although the Knowth tomb tour is fascinating in its own right. Getting to the buses from the visitor center is about a ten minute otherwise easy walk/hike over the river. Entry to the inner chamber is not accessible for wheelchairs, and may be challenging for some who are very heavy, as the passage way becomes quite narrow in places. The knowledgeable and witty tour guides, megalithic art, natural beauty of the river and valley, and the remarkable prehistoric structures make this one of my favorite sites in all of Ireland.
An absolutely astounding historical spot, nestled in the beautiful Irish countryside. The history of the location is astounding, and the guides all were passionate about the history of the site, a sharing the stories of the discovery and area.As there are limits to the site access, be sure to buy your tickets in advance so as to not be disappointed.
Amazing experience. We booked for 2pm on a Sunday. Book in advance for sure! You start with a visit in the visitor center for around 45 min and then a shuttle bring you to Newgrange for around 30 min visit with 20min with a guide.Really worth it for the price!
Great visit if you get to the site it’s self. Bit off a mess having Center 30k round trip from the site.. as for the price of food inside it will be hard to find more expensive in Ireland for what is provided. It makes the cliffs look inexpensive . Bring a packed lunch and enjoy a good day.
it was a nice stop on our way to Belfast from Dublin.
Thought provoking place - you get so close to 5,200 year old art
What an AMAZING sight! These tombs are even older than the pyramids of Egypt and have been preserved with great care. The tour guides are incredibly helpful and informative of the area. I highly recommend visiting here and learning the history of the Neolithic people!
Group loved it even though they didnt get to see newgrange itself as there was no spaces they said the visitor center was great. Large carpark, everything beautifully kept and a lovely cafe. Very happy people here
Ukrainians built it ! Believe it or not but that is what our guide told us
Its stunning and one of "MUST SEE" when visiting Ireland. Older than Stonehenge, much more interesting and definitely worth it!
This is a great WHS.Arrived late in the afternoon in early November hoping there were spaces. There was but I didn’t realise the last pm group (3.15pmcan only go to the Newgrange site. This was a shame but still awesome as this is billed as one of the best prehistoric sites in the world...5,000+ years old.The siteNewgrange is awesome and the Boinne valley is stunning. The construction of the tomb is very interesting and you get to go into the inner chamber. The effort that our ancestors put into building this was immense.FacilitiesModern centre with parking, toilets, gift shop, cafe and information film show. The best thing is the informative displays they have there.Price - €7 for Newgrange visit.Accessibility - the centre is but you have to walk over a stepped bridge to get to the bus (short drive to siteand I didn’t see anything amenable to wheelchair users. The same is to be said and you definitely won’t be able to get into the chamber as it is restrictive.Other languages - English speaking guides only. Don’t know if there are audio guides.Cons - I felt rushed to leave they wanted to lock up and when they leave any vehicles will get locked in.Bóinne Valley - stunning historical valley with many other attractions. My visit 6th November 2018.
Looks fabulous from the entrance site. What l didnt know was that you need to book in advance. There were no tickets available for the whole month of May! I was there on 6.5.22. Apparently this happens a lot. Take heed - they wont let you in. I had spoken to several Tourist Information offices on my Ireland visit and nobody mentioned the two venue mini bus your with guides you have to book in advance. Disappointed to say the least. Other people turned up at the same time as me. From the USA - they were disappointed too. Hopefully this messages helps others planning to visit on the future.
What a way to learn about Irelands earliest settlers and Mesolithic heritage. Highly recommend doing the Newgrange and Knowth tours with the OPWs knowledgeable guides. Friendly staff and spectacular exhibits.
Fantastic archeological site! This is an UNESCO heritage site and the guides were awesome. The inside of Newgrange was amazing and the only other place, Ive been, like it were the Great Pyramids of Giza. A major difference here is its much older than the pyramids dating back to the neolithic era. Adults and children all learned a bit and enjoyed. The carvings are impressive and it was impressive how old they are.
Fascinating site with a nice visitor centre with lots of information about its history. Busses to the sights and very friendly guides. Well worth the price of admission!
Wonderful day. These neolithic structures are incredible. The guides are superb and the educational materials great. Also a freshly made sandwich and decent tea in the visitor centre. Everyone should see these places
Lovely to be able to walk in and see the craftsmanship on the interior. I’m sure it’s spectacular to see on the winter solstice. But they do a mock up of that for you with the lights off and then the sun rising. They give you a lot of history so there’s really no time to look around on the outside. The buses are very timely.
Amazing experience where you can see and touch stone markings made by someone over 5000 years ago. The tour guides are very nice. You get an explanation and a tour inside the tomb (you cant take pictures insideand then you can explore the outside on your own.
Great tour. The docents were knowledgeable and very engaging and know the history well. Knowth was an exceptional experience. Visitor Centre really well done, efficient, clean and memorable. Tour very good value for money to see such extraordinarily special place.
Fascinating 5000 year old Neolithic passage tomb. Go to the visitor centre for tickers and the museum. A bus takes you to the tomb and back. No tickets sold at the site. The visitor centre has an interesting museum, lovely cafe, clean toilets and shop. Plenty of parking. Short walk to the visitor centre. €5 entry, but free to English Heritage members. An iconic and amazing World Heritage site.
Absolutely sick. You dont get much time on the self guided tour but its amazing nevertheless. The guides are very knowledgeable should you have a question. Look out for "influencers" if you want a bit of extra fun on the side.
Interesting place. Alas, not too much info is given on the site itself, only at the visitor center.Note you are not allowed to go into the tomb itself any more. No guided tours as well. So basically just walking around for 25 minutes and thats it.
Such a scenic and mesmerising place. Tour guide brings you back thousands of years before the Egyptians arrived. They paint a picture of what life was like back all those years ago. Fantastic visitors centre on site with in-house restaurant. Dont miss it.
Incredible! Worth the visit. They do not have a souvenir store but what a wonderful place. The craftsmanship and history (over 5000 yrs old).
.Newgrange - World Heritage SiteNewgrangeNewgrange is a 5,200 year old passage tomb located in the Boyne Valley in Irelands Ancient East.
The hair on my arms and neck stood on end being in the presence of this place. Partially because its older than the pyramids and its location is breathtaking. FYI, The visitor center is currently under construction, so myself and partner got to view it on the tour for free!
Amazing site!! That takes you back to simpler times. When our ancestors built things not thinking of the impact it would have thousands of years into the future. Giving us a glimpse into what real team work is possible of building.
1000 years before Stonhenge. 500 years before the pyramids. You are able to go inside the sacred space and see the carvings and recognize the historical significance of the place. Be aware though that is a very tight fit. If you are claustrophobic, it may not be the right thing for you. I would still go but just stay outside and walk around...
So glad that they have restricted tours for here. Keeps the crowds manageable and allows you to have a bit of time exploring the site not having to jostle elbows. Would so much love to come back on the solstice to see the light come into the chamber for myself, but the guide did a nice job of mimicking it.
Breathtaking look back into the past, as this is one of the oldest archaeological sites in the world. You are able to go into the actual tomb during the guided tour, however photos inside are not allowed. The staff were amazingly kind and helpful. There is a small bus ride from the entrance out to the site.
Fascinating that this is older than the pryamids! You need.to go to the visitor center first and ride the shuttle over, you cannot park at the site. Great tour and reasonably priced. Bonus: beautiful countryside views on the way and while youre there.
What an amazing place! Its not every day you get to step back 5300 years in history and experience the genius of stone age man. This whole area is dotted with passage tombs, megalithic cathedrals and henges. We went into Newgrange and the experience was incredible. Walking around and seeing how well the site has weathered the last five millennia is something to behold.
