I have been coming to Browns since it first opened in Bristol, man many years ago! Always enjoyed it!

very cozy place, the hostess was pleasantly greeted and led to our table. wonderful waiters. The food was delicious, except for the octopus, since I only found 3-5 pieces of the whole dish. it would be better if I ordered a bird)otherwise everything is great! well definitely be back.

Great vibe, and as others have said, would be perfect for a big group of people!The breakfast/brunch menu was very extensive. They only have one vegan option, but it was really tasty! I loved the beetroot hashbrown and the smashed avocado & toast - very well seasoned! The scrambled tofu was a little lacklustre (mostly spinach). The non-vegan options were very good, too (according to my companions). The portions were very big and filling!The toilets are very clean and spacious.The staff were very friendly and accommodating, although it was very empty when we came (11am). The booking was very easy, and we were able to cancel and rebook at very short notice!

Booked in for afternoon tea, took quite a while for drinks to be brought out and there were no gluten free scones available which hadn’t been highlighted to us when ordering. We had specifically booked this afternoon tea due to the good gluten free options.I think the selection of sandwiches could be better or adjustable like we tried but the waitress didn’t quite seem to understand that one of our vegetarian guests couldn’t have fish. There was a delay in one of the afternoon teas coming out at which point I flagged down a manager and he was quite dismissive. The manager did give a discount for the gluten free afternoon tea. The sandwiches/cakes were delicious but I do feel overall it was a disappointing experience due to the service.

I love this place so much! ❤️ The decor, the vibe, and of course the food and drinks are amazing. Only a touch on the pricey side and completely worth it for the quality. Highly recommend to anyone for a classy lunch or a fun get together, and the staff are so helpful and nice

This was a family visit for a birthday celebration, seven of us in total. Venue suitable for young adults, parents and grandparents. Very nice surroundings, good good and service very good

Distinctly average and not up to the high prices. I had a disappointing Long Island Ice Tea that tasted much like a watery rum and coke; a crab and avocado starter that brought out little of either flavour; and a steak whose accompaniments were cold.For three people, two courses, two cocktails and one glass of wine, it came to £142. To leave feeling entirely underwhelmed smarts a bit.

Service was slow. After waiting 20mins to pay the bill we had to get up and go to them, considering that we were the only people in there. There was more staff than there was of us I’m disappointed. Food was good. I had the pancetta pancakes. Very sweet.

It was over two years since my friend moved to London and we had eaten our final meal before her move, and planned annual revisits and last Friday we had the first opportunity to do so. Covud19 and other health issues had prevented earlier meet ups.We were both not disappointed with the new Al a carte.menu. I had scallops salmon and profiteroles.my friend had the mushrooms, vegetable pie and home made brownie.With a bottle of procesco the total bill with service was very good value.Thanks to everyone who kept the food coming will be coming back again soonten months on and a return visit by friends from London ensured another visit. The menus on offer at the time of our booking allowed a great selection on offer. starters were prawns and mushrooms on toast. mains which were fabulous was the fillet steak and scallops the other main was the mussels in a beautiful sauce. the fillets were cooked to perfection with melt in the mouth scallops complete with two sauces. we finished with an Eton mess with crumbling melt in the mouth meringue. the lemon posset was beautifully presented and packed with flavour.the drinks were prosecco and a chilled beer which was served in a chilled glass maintaining the correct temperature. instead of a sweet one of the party had a double expresso.the visit to Bristol to tell me a date had been set for the wedding and a great way to enjoy talking about the future complete with great food impeccably served with a smile on the face of the staff thank you once again

Waitress/service exceptional (lovely woman from NZ, she was brilliant).Food very well presented and cooked (my steak just a touch over but not a big deal..). It came in good time.Exquisite setting.

Good food. Nice venue. Pleasant staff. Key learning would just be initial meet & great and 1st drinks order which was a little slow. I accept not Michelin star but that handover and initial attention is often key. Wasnt that busy. We were slow eaters and main course arrived as soon as starters finished.Minor stuff in the scheme of things and would come again.

Very friendly polite and efficient welcome at the door. Shown to a table close to an open door (without askingto get some fresh air as very hot day. Good amount of time given to choose what we would like. Very interesting and varied menu, difficult to choose!Perfect, food and presentation.I cannot fault our lunch visit, will recommend to everyone I know and cant wait to come back!!

Went for afternoon tea. It was fine, but only fine. Nice but not amazing. Service bit slow to be seated and not impressed with automatic 10% service charge. Price seemed expensive for what we got.

Ah, ye dog days of summer are here in Bristol and I hath been suffering in the heat, but resisting the temptation to dive into yonder harbour a second time. Might end up with polio or worse..."Master, allow me to fan thine heated brow with a tree branch," one of my loyal slaves said to me."Nay, I hath a better idea - let us seek out a tavern and enjoy a fyne beverage and repast." I replied.And so we chose Browns. What a delightful experience. I enjoyed a two course lunch for around 14 guineas (give or take a few groats).Delicious salmon and steak fries. Excellent efficient service that wouldve impressed King Charles II. (God rest his soul).I only wish smoking pipes was still legal indoors, but I keep forgetting Im not in the 80s any more. The 1680s that is.I do hope to dine here again soon and try the Camembert appetiser next time. All praise to Browns!Your most humble servant,Edward Colston, Esq

Very expensive, medium rare and medium fillet steak was well done, when I told waiting staff. They said " Ill give feed back to the kitchen, and walked away, no compensation for what was an expensive meal.

Just had drinks on the balcony,in the sunshine, people watching...staff very friendly and helpfulOrganised, tables cleaned, nice atmosphere .

Great experience and amazing food! Came with my parents for a sunday roast the first time, already thought that was great. Yesterday was equal to the previous experience. Would recommend to everyone I know!

What I love about Browns is that its honest food. Theyve never bowed to fashion to produce dishes with foam or smoke, or with your sauce brushed onto a roof tile or whatever the latest fad is. You get meals you recognise, made with great quality ingredients and cooked to perfection.

Great food, very poor service.When making a booking I specified a graduation meal and asked to be contacted if there were any special deals or anything they could do to make it special - No reply.Waited over 30 min between finishing the starter and receiving the mains. Had to flag down a server to get the bill and then they still didnt come with it - had to get up and go to the bar to pay.Ill be going elsewhere for my own graduation. Have had much better service for cheaper in other restaurants. Was supposed to be a special celebratory meal but we were really sidelined and made to feel very unimportant.Edit: when I specified special treatment, I did not mean to be treated better than other tables, but to be treated better than... basically ignored lol

We thought the service and food quality was excellent. We were all extremely hot on arrival -( the hottest day in the UKs history), but were welcomed with a carafe of cold water and seated in the bar before we thought about placing our drinks order.Service was well timed - attentive without feeling rushed or too slow.The only problem we found was my daughter was looking for a pasta dish and not keen on the crab and Prawn linguine option. Could you add some simple pasta dishes to your menu please?(She had the chicken and enjoyed it). We were hopeful of a lemon sorbet but you only had Raspberry - but again it was delicious.thank you for a memorable meal for her graduation!

We were impressed and relieved at Brownss flexibility to change our booking at short notice - thank you for this. The member of staff waiting our table was brilliant; Im afraid I didnt get his name but he did a great job and we were very impressed. Above all, the cooking of the fish & seafood in particular absolutely blew our minds! The scallops were to die for, as was the cod.The only let-downs were to do with menu items not being available/already being out of stock even though it was early in the evening (though I imagine there had probably been some supply chain issues due to the weather), and the lack of air conditioning. I appreciate that the UK is seldom boiling hot, but as the climate shifts and we get more hot days a year, it would make a huge difference to have air con and not just ceiling fans, as the temperature was really uncomfortable. I cant imagine how uncomfortable it must have been for the restaurant staff!

Really poor vegetarian and vegan options. Only 1 vegan option for mains and 3 vegetarian (inc the vegan). Never normally have to struggle with options when I go out to eat in general. Really disappointing as there wasn’t really much I could eat as one of the few veggie mains contained aubergine, which I don’t like and there was very limited other options to chose from. Poor considering it’s a fancy restaurant. Please add more non meat/dairy items!

Came for some post-graduation drinks, the bartender was very helpful in recommending cocktails. Mojito was refreshing and sweet. First time we had tried a Negroni and it was delicious!

One meal was luke warm but when the server was notified she dealt with this quickly and provided a new hot meal within 5-6 minutes.

Stunning building, great atmosphere and delicious cocktails.We’ve been on terrace enjoying drinks and a sunshine !!! Will be coming back soon for some more

Upon our arrival, they didn’t seem to know we were there for afternoon tea and the table wasn’t set up. They did rectify this. Then there was no decaf tea so one of us had to have a soft drink which was disappointing. The cakes and scones were delicious but the sandwiches were disappointing. They had clearly been made earlier in the day as the edges of the sandwiches were dry and crispy. The fillings were also stingy. There was barely any cheese in the cheese and chutney one. The service was good though.

Sticky tables and veggie choice was poor. Aubergine main was honestly one of the worst things Ive ever ordered in a restaurant (tiny portion and undercooked), but the staff were nice enough to refund. Everyone else enjoyed their meals.

Booked a birthday dinner for my boyfriend and Browns delivered the perfect evening. Excellent food, wine and cocktails plus a level of service that is rarely seen these days. A special mention to Eszter 😍 She was fun, friendly, attentive and genuinely seemed to care that we had a good time. Highly recommended and we will be back!

My lovely seafood dish was enjoyable to a point (perfectly cooked seafoodbut there was too much salt in the sauce, for me.Friendly staff, even though slightly busy.

My favourite place in Bristol to eat when we visit our Son ,Josh, a third year Medical student. The menus and food is fantastic but the staff and service is what makes every visit lovely

Great relaxing breakfast. Had steak & eggs with some warm sougher dough cob and butter. Loved it!!! Ive never been here before but will 100% go again. The staff are lovely and the gothic period building is stunning.Made my day x

We had an amazing time. Staff is extremely friendly and the food is sensational. The place is beautiful and we will definitely be coming back. We came for brunch but will certainly try their other options

+Atmosphere and venue are great.+Waiters were nice enough-Starter (camembertwas Ok. Nothing special. Crisps that came with it were covered in frying fat.-Mains came out immediately after the starter. At least give me 5-10mins for the starter to settle.-"Schnitzel" was overcooked and dry. Lemon & Thyme was barely noticeable. "Dressed salad" was 3 leaves of wilted cress. Overall a complete joke to be served in a restaurant, especially for the price charged.- Fish with chorizo risotto dish was OK, but chorizo did cover the taste of everything else and made it very salty.

A very nice restaurant up to the usual Browns standard and a superb 2 courses for £14.95 offer weekday afternoons and early evening. Service was friendly, informed and timing just what you want. Tried the smoked salmon and steak fries both prepared as well as anybody could hope for.

My friend and I today enjoyed a super brunch. We had fantastic service by Jaffa and Ella. What a pleasure to receive such wonderful service. Well done to you both

Although we were greated with a blunt question: have you got a reservation! Our sweet kiwi 🥝 Bethan waitress completely changed our experience! Gladly she was not the one who asked us that. Food was delish, drinks also and the environment was great for a Sunday evening! Not at all crowded. Definitely recommend.

I was taken to Browns for Mothers Day by my daughter. It is not often we are able to eat at such a prestigious restaurant. Being very busy, and, having previously read the reviews, I was expecting a wonderfully cooked meal. Unfortunately that was not the case. My yorkshire pudding disintegrated when I put my knife on it to cut. It was very overcooked and dry. The vegetables were cold with the exception of the cauliflower cheese which was delicious, as was also the beef. Sherry trifle was missing the sherry, and the Liqueur coffee tasteless. My daughter saved for a long time for this special treat, as I have been shielding for a long time and worried about going out into the world again. I do not think I will be going there again. Also the balustrade enclosing the upper dinning level was very dusty.

Lovely building and interior. Decent selection of meal options for lunch. We both had burgers which were fine. Service was quick and efficient. The place wasnt busy but it was a Monday lunchtime. Id eat there again.

Classy restaurant close to the University. The menu includes many typical dishes with some vegetarian and vegan options available. Particularly recommended the camembert and squid appetizers, the fillet and the pot pie. The price is above average, but its in line with the restaurant target and the quality of the menu. Staff is great. Totally recommended!

Nice place with great vibe. Cool decor and great staff who make it a pleasure to hang out there. They have a rich menu with plenty of options for everyone - we had pies that were quite good. Portions were generous, food was very rich but could be better balanced and with more sharpness. They have a good choice of cocktails too and an interesting wine selection. However the espresso martinis we had could be better. Overall a good place to visit and great to take a big group of people. Also- you definitely need a reservation cause the place gets very busy!

Very lovely, though I feel the food doesnt meet the standard of the decor.What a lovely place Browns is and its a truly lovely place in which to dine and drink. Its reminiscent of an overseas Empire club from many, many a decade ago, what with its lofty ceilings, large windows, impressive lights and grand piano.The food itself is jolly nice, though Ive found after a couple of visits that theres a certain - (pause here for dramatic effectje ne sais quois missing. My perfectly adequate ribeye seemingly adrift amid an ocean of ceramic plate, accompanied on a seemingly lonesome date with pot of fries; delightful monkfish presented in chunks (its a lovely fillet and beautiful when lightly pan fried or poachedatop vegetables including, quelle horreur, broad beans, tantamount to culinary naffness. (Enter name of suitable colourful vegetable here as an alternative).None of my party left unhappy, so dont get me wrong, as its the whole package to be relished, Im just saying that for >me< its "a B++ on the homework young lad, room for improvement, eh?"Ill be in again next week, regular table please.✌️

Delicious food, friendly helpful staff, such a great place to go, highly recommend.Vegan options are great and different to what you find in most places which is nice.I asked for a smoothie to be supersized because I just fancied a smoothie for breakfast and they kindly obliged. Thank you!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another restaurant chain that understands dog lovers love good food too. Again a Switched on waiter found a water bowl for our pooch without being asked. Lovely menu that caters for a vegan diet and the fact that this Browns is housed in the most beautiful Grade II listed building, made the meal all the more spectacular.

Great food, service was slow but our waiter was a good guy and couldnt fault him. Will definitely eat there again and hopefully general service is better. (Have upgraded to 4 stars because the restaurant had the courtesy to respond and also I think 3 was a bit harsh, the food was banging after all 😅)

Pleasently surprised by the standard of the meal we enjoyed here. The whole event was top notch. From the waiter remembering three peoples orders without using a notebook to the token birthday desert for my wife, [see photo].We had scallops to start, beautifully presented, although not quite as warm as Id preferred. I went for piece of hake from the specials board, very nicely cooked with a mussel risotto. All the meals we ordered were well enjoyed.Towards the end of the evening we were treated to some live music, an excellent saxophonist entertained us creating a great atmosphere. I will recommend this establishment and hopefully return soon.

Met a friend here for brunch as I looked the look of the menu. We both had Eggs Royale which were delicious, great location and lovely ambiance, however, service was a little lackluster, food took an age to come out and the orange juice tasted watered down, though this could be down to the ridiculous amount of ice in the glass. You effectively pay for a third of a glass of orange juice, the rest made up of ice!

I love browns! My go to place. We always come here on birthdays or date night. The food is always very tasty and there is a good selection to choose from.I always book and show up early for a drink before had.The staff are always lovely and polite. Service is great. Never has a bad meal!
