Storied 19th-century fortress used by German military forces during World War I & II.
Maybe with tourist guide would be more interesting
Cool
Tells a lot about the German National attitude
Lovely for walking around when weather is not great but clearly need good management and some love and care (aka investment). Sad to see dilapidation, lack of direction and thinking whats next... so much potential lost like many places like this in Poland. Breaks my heart.
The fortress itself is magnificent albeit in a pretty neglected state. The exhibitions are quite poor, with no common theme. Historical background is not presented almost at all, you have to do your own research. Id say worth a detour if youre into forts but tamper your expectations.
Good nice place for Poland history. Very nice place. 👍
Did not meet my expectations - overpriced. I was informed about restrictions (very inconvenient to meafter purchasing ticket.
This is an interesting historical place which is worth visiting when you are in Gizycko
I loved this place. Very fun exploring the entire premises.
It was worth visiting. Went on a rainy day and still enjoyed it.
Horrible. There is no point in going here - you see nothing, the trails are in very bad condition, signs where to go are very unclear, nowhere it is written how long each trail takes. Do yourself a favour and skip this place. If I could I would give it zero stars.
A fine example of a 19th century Prussian fortress affords a pleasant hike around the walls. Close to town center and wharf
Great place, however the museum expositions are very weak. During winter some of them are closed. This place has great potential, and its placed in beautiful area... Hope it will change for better soon.
The ticket is for 15zl/person although we managed to enter for free(special day). Lot of walking if you like to see the whole fortress.
Here is huge potential in this place. Unfortunately, it required a lot work. Fortifications are in bad condition. Very short a general panels with information about history. Poor visibility of the signs of the tour paths.
Well preserved and some excellent restored buildings giving a history of defences against attacks on the Prussian state by Russia. Comfortable shoes necessary but beware little explanation available in English on the exhibits.
A huge waste of time. The fortress is a neglected group of old buildings with no common historical context provided. There are several parts and groups of differently themed exhibits but hardly any explanation as to what connected them. The map that you get at the entrance is a list of points of interest with minimal description. Definitely advise to keep away.
Good place for family trip.
Quite interesting place
You get your bang for your buck. For 15slots you get a nice walk with english typos in most of the info panels.
Interesting place but underfunded and exhibits a little boring. Guided tours could be more informative and tell us more about the history of the place back in the 1800s.
Very interesting museum, very badly taken care off, with a little bit of effort this museum could be 10 x better.
Sightseeing for about 2-4 hours. There are routes for exploration enthusiasts, for which headlights will be very useful. I recommend combining route red and green. Unfortunately there is not enough information about history of the fortress. In one pavilion is an interesting exhibition about Gizycko city. There are couple places for a break with a nice view on surrounding.
Quite a nice place to see, definitely worth a visit. You can go on your own and just read information boards next to each building. It may get quite boring, as many parts of fortress are look-a-likes.
Quite nice place. Everything ok during visit. I expected more intresting exhibits.
Very interesting history, the site managent must to improve the signs and the information for the travelers. Many buildings are broken and not open to the public.
Really good place for a walk
Interesting historical site to visit. Theres a detailed sign next to every building to explain the function of each place. There are 3 touristic routes to follow, all of them relatively easy to do. Some of the buildings are pretty much damaged and forgotten, while some others have a nice exhibit.
Huge territory to walk. Many exponats to see. Peace of Prussian history. Sometimes it feels great for urbex exploring. Check the old skuba-diver club. Would be impressive if there would scrap of field dedicated for a tavern on lake shore.
What a ruin. There is nothing to see the, its all not maintained and theres nothing inside. Thats why they put the ticket office immediately in the entrance so you dont see there is nothing there.Look at my photos and see: its just a ruin.Avoid. There a lot of other things to do around.
Mazury are vary well known for their lakes, forests and as prime nature vacation destinatio. Boyen Fortress is one if several witnesses to the much less know importance of the region: role in the history, especially World War I. Each year in August there is "Operation Boyen" reenactment with "Grochówka" (military style split pea soupfest, historical military parade, antiques flea market and more is a must if you are in the area. Family friendly.
Good walking place, however not much of attraction. A bit of expositions but in need of work for make the place more interesting.
It is a interesting place but it dont have English signs in the exhibition and museum. It is apity then I really hade liked to read about the fort, the city and the history.
Great place for a walk. Especially with a turistguide who will tell you a little bit more about the history.
Great place to have a walk and feel the military history, every year is better with more expositions, mind it will take some hours to walk around the whole complex if u want to look into / walk through every attraction
A large fortification built in the late 1800s modified by the the Germans in WW2. Brick buildings and earth covered curtain walls, a beautiful walk around the ramparts and a few small museums within, guided tours or just wonder around the wooded grounds.
This was an impromptu visit at the end of winter in Poland. Will come back in summer. Great place to explore and learn the rich history. You probably need good 4 hours or so to do it. Take your time and explore.
Historical place. And it is always nice to see places where you can feel history. Only one minus - there is no signs or anything. And if you will go without guide - even with map it is difficult to notify where one or another past of fortress it is.
Recommended when you want some break from lakes. If u have time - take a walk arround the walls (outside fortress), but be prepared for some climbing along the bars surrounding the amphitheater:)
To start with.. most of the tour is in polish, when you invite foreign tourists and ask them to pay please be so kind to put info in other languages as well. You have to pay for entrance, if you want some brochure with description - pay additionally. Fortress itself as an architectural heritage is amazing, though potential for tourism is undeveloped, large part is abandoned. Content in fortress is boring and, as mentioned, in polish. Further, there is one shed rebuilt, which is an extraordinary example of waste of money, has no value at all. Finally theres a place called gunpowder lab - reconstructed, restored part of fortress, again millions invested, but has nothing to do with what it used to be - few guns from various historical periods, best I guess is a wooden spear made by themselves from local hazelnut tree stick :))give 2 stars only because of the potential and architectural, historical value. Expect little, just a walk tour and you wont be disapointed.
Small fortress & don’t wast your time visit it.
I missed English text in the gallery building and some more clear description and markings of the routes. However it does look much better than couple of years ago and its going in the right direction :)
Nice walk but could be more informative.
Impressive fortification and very passionate guide!
Nice place for a walk and sightseeing, well preserved, allows people.to feel a bit how was it there during the war.
Very interesting place for lovers of fortifications and military. But honestly it still needs a lot of work and money to bring it backs to its glory times. But if u are around Masury, u should visit this place. Its a good idea to get a guide tour, becouse there are no any plates with history of the place.Ticket cost : 15 PLN =~4€.
What a terrible experience : the perfect definition of EMPTINESS! So much potential, and so little effort to emphasize it... Dont waste your time here, there is NOTHING worth seeing :([edit] : I cant believe that some people rate this more than 3 stars Oo !
Well organized, you can learn a lot about the place. The museum is surprisingly big and has some nice weapons on the display. 😎
Do you speak Polish? No!Anyway, you can enjoy history in this territory and what great garnisons people used to build those days!Mosquitoes are very angry there!
This fortress is amazing to walk through! It covers a huge area and the outer walls are still intact all the way around. It is perfect for catching a glimpse of medieval history. As far as I could tell the fortress doesnt have guided tours, but there are three clearly marked trails of different lengths and there are information boards in Polish, English, and German at every point of interest.
