Boulders Penguin Colony - Nature reserve in Hermanus, South Africa
Enjoyed seeing the penguins .Absolutely a wonderful experience.
Loved the place. Nice cute penguins all over. With the same ticket one can walk down to the beach and if lucky get to swim with some penguins.
Twas kinda cool but not worth driving 60kms for. The penguins are just there, no show, just there. One can even see em without popping a cent. Can even swim with em for free. Paying is free will.
I love penguins. It is a very unique place to observe penguins on the beach.
What a special little place! Absolutely adorable little penguins everywhere!!
Boulders Penguin colony is such a wonderful place. The Penguins can be see in their natural ecosystem at very close range. There is also a nice shop for those who feel like buying souvenirs. Not far from the colony, the Seaforth restaurant serves delicious food. I had unforgettable memories and I definitely recommend it.
A beautiful short drive from Cape Town is where you will find African Penguins. Located near a place called Simon’s town, the penguin colony is another must see places. The drive itself takes you thru some beautiful scenic route…don’t miss this. There are many places where you can stop to take pictures. When you get to the penguin colony, you have to park in a parking lot and then a 5 min walk takes you to the penguin place. After paying the entrance fee (170 rand per person), you walk on boardwalk to get to the penguins. You see them in their natural habitat and they are really mesmerizing. One can watch them for hours. The only issue is that sometimes there can be too many visitors so you don’t have as much time to watch the penguins. There is another place where the crowds are less and it costs less (30 rand per person). It’s called Stoney Point Nature Reserve. It’s a little further out but here you can take your time watching the penguins. And the drive there is simply incredible. You drive along the coast with unbelievable scenery and winding roads. See my review if this in a separate post.
Great location to view these cute creatures :)
Great parking location. We then chose to walked along the wooden footpath not knowing what to expect. We could see nests along the way and great views. On reaching the signpost to enter for penguins we paid and was told we could use the same tickets at the main entrance to see the colonies.I do admit I thought we would see penguins. We managed to see one on the shore and we stayed an hour to enjoy the beach. We walked back along the wooden footpath and got to the entrance for the main colonies. It was spectacular. They are beautiful, well kept and happy feet! Its absolutely worth the visit!
So cute! Loved watching the penguins play in the waves.
Really wonderful experience, brilliant for kids. You have to pay to enter so check the website beforehand.
It was so special watching the penguins go about their daily lives. Lots of people around but the penguins werent bothered. Some still small some on eggs others just dozing quietly
A total tourist trap outsider and quite expensive for international visitors. But once inside the entrance its well laid out and worth the visit!
A very beautiful and excellent shop for tourists, the beauty of the view and the arrangement of the garden in terms of cleanliness and coordination caught my attention.
Beautiful beach to swim and a nice view of all the penguins.
The Boulders Penguin Colony helps to conserve the African Penguin ( or Jackass Penguinwhich is now an endangered species. You can pay to into the colony - free entrance of you have a Wildcard. You can also see the penguins as you walk along the path - this is a well maintained planked walkway. You can see some penguins nesting close to the fence. There is another path through a gate which leads to beautiful spots where you can picnic on the rocks and swim in the bay. Beautiful clean white sandy beaches.
You have to pay to see the penguins on the beach . But you can use a free way next to the beach and you can also see the penguins. Very close.
Clean beach, friendly staff. No complaints.
The penguins were fun to watch. Great views of Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay. Take your ID for discounts 😉
What an amazing experience. And not as costly as one would think. Its a scenery out of a painting. Good walk for kids and the elderly . Calm, beautiful and mesmerising.
If you were to visit with kids, they would definitely have a wonderful time
Stunning natural environment for the penguins to enjoy their sunbathing and swimming. This is a dream and I love going to visit the penguins. Most of the areas are gated off where you shouldn’t walk to leave the penguins to have a safe breeding zone.Pro tip: I’ve paid to go inside the area and wouldn’t necessarily recommend paying. You can go visit them for free if you go towards the left from the parking lot. Go towards the beach and you’ll see plenty of penguins sunbathing, swimming and hanging by their dens.Pro pro tip: bring a blanket and picnic because it’s a beach. You’ll get to hang out with them and have a good time with friends or a romantic date.
Great idea for some time out of the house! The “facilities” are in good condition, and for R42 (SA Resident adultsit’s pretty cheap! You can get a great view of the penguins and if you want to take photos you will get good ones no doubt.
What an amazing outing! Blessed to be able ro see these unique creatures up close. Penguins mate for life and that is where I popped the question to my life mate...
A lil bit of beautiful Atlantic can be seen with amazing green sea view and with lovely penguins 🐧
Great place for penguins, i wish if there was a closer to contact with them and staff for guiding
Lovely experience but really tiny walk way to see the penguins. We spent about 15min there as it is a tiny section to view the penguins. Remember to bring your Id or driver for the rsa discount or you will pay full price.
I didn’t think you had to pay to enter there, but you do ;210 rands for international ppl. Definitely worth coming in the morning when there is no one yet!
Capetown southern point of africa seeing the photos. Lots of penguins and birds easy parking
So refreshing to see animals NOT begging for food and super cute scenes of penguins with their babies! We aĺl loved this trip to Boulders! And all for R40 odd bucks pp!
The penguins were adorable! And it was nesting season so you got to see all the mama penguins taking care of their eggs and laying on them in the sand. We also got to see several penguins swim while the waves were coming. They do close earlier at 5pm so be mindful of that
🐧VERY CLOSE meeting with lots of penguins 📸🎫 Low budget ticket (~15$)Groups or single visits🅿️Arriving with car 🚘 👌🏻🚌TOURIST BUS STOP
Great place to get photos of and to view the penguins in their natural habitat but it was a bit expensive at R170 considering the cost of other tourist things nearby
Beautiful place were bit windy but penguins were everywhere to see great experience
If you love the ocean...you must check out Boulders as these beautiful creatures are adorable as I always end up at Boulders to watch these penguins as roam around.
Sweet spot to observe the penguins. From this entrance you can only observe them from a platform. If you want to go on the beach, swim and be closer to the penguins you need to go to the “beach entrance” which is 300m away. We were misguided and went to the platform. There’s an entrance fee for both entrance (need to pay 2x).
Maybe it wil be nice for kids or people who never saw penguins in their life but it is short walk and then you can just watch the penguins while they are lying in the sun on the beach and that is it
Managed to avoid peak time, walked the boardwalk down to the beach to see the colony. Penguins in their natural habitat, the place is well maintained. Will definitly go again.
I havent been in years but it was definitely worth the drive. We truly are blessed to have the opportunity to share the beach and sea with penguins... where else in the world can you do such things and in such a beautiful environment as well. BONUS you get to contribute to Sanparks as well 🥰
Great place to check out the penguins. The walkways make it very easy for almost anyone to gain access to look at the penguins. There is a route with stairs and one without. You can get really up and close to the penguins lounging around close to their homes. Then you can go out on the other route and make it out to the beach where the penguins head out to go fishing. Great if you have a Wild Card as entry is free. Parking is a bit of a challenge on busy days and this is the only reason I cannot score them higher.
Choose a good day when we went to Boulders beach it started drizzling and it was cold so our visit was rushed..after a long drive..parking can b difficult to get since its for both the beach and the penguin visitors...the penguins r so cute and well behaved 🐧🐧loved it..its worth a visit
Nice and relaxing walk from the parking area. Theres a little market with traditional African souvenir sellers. The walk is free and you can see many penguins along the walk. Its child and wheelchair friendly. Great photo opportunities. You can choose to enter the paid area where you can actually swim with the penguins or the free walk. Locals and foreigners pay different prices,😔 . A great place to visit. There are a few restaurants on either side of the walk, also a little tuck shop that sells chips and soft drinks. Enjoy!!!!
If you are in the area, please make a stop and watch these amazing animals. It was the first time for me to experience Penguins in real life and to see them in their own habitat! .. It was just so peaceful to be able to sit and see what they do. 🐧
Penguins!! If you have a chance to watch Penguin Town on Netflix before you come here, youll appreciate it that much more. It was so wonderful watching them doing their penguin things 🐧We could have stayed here and watched them for our whole trip❤
R40 Entry per adult for South Africans citizens. Bring your ID book or driver license to get your discount. You can pay with cash or card.Definitely worth the visit. Great family outing! Wheel-chair friendly. Beautiful views. You get to see some penguins up close.Best times to spot the penguins are early mornings and evenings.
Great place to visit, take a walk through the special viewing paths made to see and also smell those little penguins.
This place is so cute and dreamy with hundreds and penguins running around. It is a fun place for kids and small family outing. The great thing about this place is that you can always stop for nearby lunch after right around the corner.
OMG! Visually, this place was so dreamy with all the penguins. Please do bear the smell though :-D They are so funny to watch, please do visit in the evening time, the colors are good and you will have a good view of the dolls. The train ride to here is something not be missed for the solo travellers.
Totally worth a trip to see the penguins, but do yourself a favor and visit on a weekday. The weekends are busy and the beach is small. If you prefer to save some cash just take the boardwalk and youll be able to see plenty of penguins along the walk.
Penguin Nest ( Boulders Beach )This is a nice place to see Penguin in their kingdom. Well maintained by authorities for animal welfare. Photographers can spot nesting, feeding, fishing as well as hatching. There is also a public beach nearby where you can enjoy a bath. This place has a parking, accessible to wheel chair & washrooms. There is no restaurant on the site but nearby there are a lot of them in Simons Town.Time required to visit is 1-2 hrs. There is a lot of walking about 1-2 km.
