Boubou Hama Museum - Museum in Tillaberi, Niger
The museum and the zoo are in the same place. When we arrived to buy the museum ticket (XOF 1500), we also asked us to buy the camera ticket (XOF 1000), but the staff inside the museum told us that we could not take pictures. Its none of their business when you go out and ask for a refund. They told us after the ticket was sold, no refund could be made, really shouldnt cheat tourists like that.
So better and easy
I was sooo surprised when I saw that one.
I hope you like my picture
Hreat
Animals are in small cages and they seem weak. They cant move freely. Especially the hyena in a very small cage. I felt deeply sorry when i saw their conditions. Something should be done to make them more relax!
Boubou Hamma Musée National is the national museum of the republic of Nigèr, located in Niamey.I heared it was established in 1959.The museum is houses a park, zoo & a recreational area. I visited there in 2019 and in the museum I learnt different traditional dwellings of Nigerien cultures.Im Nigerian, I visited here on my Travel across West african states.
Was so interesting
The place lacks of content other than the impressive gigantic dinosaur skeletons.
Not bad, but it must be improved in order to be more attractive
Museum National Boubou
Its a good tourist attraction site. And a good culture conservation center.
Seeing the animals kept in the tiny cages without water or comfort hurt my heart. Interesting dinosaurs. Was hoping to see inside the museum but it closes for certain hours. Posted a photo to help others.
Poor animals caged in very small places and nothing to play with.. 🐯💔
The "Zoo" must be shut down NOW!!. It is unacceptable to have animals caged like this, just horrible.
wonderful place to spend the day
Very cool place. I have never been there, however it looks nice.
2 dinosaur skeletons and some other animals. Skeletons are located behind the local handcraft bazaar and cant see them clearly.
Way to many (Name of the country)
Distraction
Good
It was good
Cool
You get to be very close to the animals, which is nice. But, the animals are cared for a little differently than in the States. It would be great to see the animals well being thought about more. It is just a little different that what I am accustomed to. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and it wasnt too crowded. There was a little market that you can purchase souvenirs from too.
Good place
Educational and interesting
Saw nice animals and the museum
You will find pre-historic dinoseur fossil here.
Very good place to visit
Nice
Zoo not a museum.
The mini zoo will make your eyes bleed
The museum consists of three parts: the zoo, the art workshops and the actual museum, whereby the parts are mixed and presented in smaller buildings on a large outdoor area. In the zoo, the animals of the country are cruelly kept in tiny pavilions: lions, monkeys and even hyenas, also river animals like hippos and crocodiles. In the art workshops wood figures, silver jewellery and leather products are manufactured and offered for sale. The museum itself shows some of the most typical artefacts, whereby the most impressive one is the replica of a dinosaur skeleton found close to Agadez in the Sahara. Furthermore, there are musical instruments, coins and notes, weapons, traditional clothing and other finds from excavations in the Sahara, thematically arranged in individual pavilions. Then there is a very shady exhibition about the uranium exploitation in the north of the country, but no word about the miners working conditions and about the conflicts with the Tuareg, on whose grassland the yellow matter is being mined. The entrance fee is moderate but photo permit is charged on top. You can book a guide at the entrance, which is not necessary but can be helpful and they are much appreciative if they get a small job.
i was shote and i got deaded
Desolant
Good
National museum named after Nigers first parlement president Boubou Hama. Home of many cultural history and different animals show. it includes also a school for professional studies such as leather handcrafting art, jewelry galeries and shops.
Good
The only attraction I found is "dianosaur fossils" in the museum.. ofcourse zoo has many animals, but sadly they in very bad condition.. I felt sad to see.. The services could be better and the arrangements for those animals could be comfortable, but responsible people/officers for zoo dont bother it seems.. I hope they will try to do better arrangements for those innocent animals. If not, then better set them free in their natural habitat..
Original, and best place to meet local artisans 👌🏾 plus the mini Zoo gives it a real African art touch
We go here to look for souvenirs made by Nigériens. Zoos are generally depressing with a bunch of locked up animals, but the artisans always have interesting items for sale. Bargaining is normal. :)
I’m sorry my niger I have no water
Just commsa
Very wonderful place...Musée National Boubou Hama is the national museum of Niger, located in Niamey. It was founded in 1959 as Musée National du Niger. Its first conservator, Pablo Toucet, designed the concept of the museum, according to which it was part of the Culture Valley of Niamey, proposed by Boubou Hama. Adjacent to the museum, also part of the Valley, are the Franco-Nigerien Cultural Center and the Center of Linguistic and Historical Studies by Oral Tradition. The museum is located in a park, it consists of a cultural and a scientific section and a zoo. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.
Cool
Its more of a zoo with old animals
When it comes to a place like this museum/zoo, you have to look at in two ways. If I was to compare it to a museum/zoo in the United States or Europe Id give it two stars tops. There really wasnt much to the museum part but the stuff they did have was interesting. Even though I dont speak French I still really appreciate the display on traditional garb, the scale model of the oil refinery, and the display on uranium mining (I didnt realize Niger was the fourth largest producer in the world...and the attendant in the room was very enthusiastic explaining it all to me even though I couldnt understand a word he was saying). If you compared this museum to most other museums Ive seen in Africa it would get a high 4, maybe 5.The dinosaur display was incredible! Never in the US or Europe would you be allowed that close to the actual bones. That alone is worth the entrance fee.The zoo was very sad and depressing. The animals are in way too small of cages in just concrete floors. They also didnt have anything to entertain themselves with. They just laid there bored out of their minds or just extremely agitated. Im sure they are doing the best they can with what they have but still very sad.
The history is great to experience. They have fossils, tribal dress, old tools, agriculture and economical history... the list goes on. If you buy items from the local artisans, they will show you around. Some speak good english, French, and hausau. Unfortunatley, the buildings with the historical stuff are peppered throughout a poorly kept zoo. Some of the animals have open wounds, tiny cages, and dirty water. The place smells atrocious. Avoid the entrance in front of the Gaweye, too much traffic. Instead enter near le petit marché. Its only 1500 FCFA to enter. Also, they dont allow pictures. They may fine you if they catch you. If youre a history buff, its worth the visit. If youre an animal lover, skip this one.
Saddest place on earth. Gross, sad, disgusting place. Human sized apes kept in cages they cant even stand or move in. Should be illegal. Zero stars
