Bolton Abbey, Skipton BD23 6AL, Bradford
Augustinian Priory church ruins, dating from the 12th century, in picturesque, riverside surrounds.
Brilliant. The atmosphere is terrific when walking around the ruin area your almost transported back in time. Fiery Freddy Trueman is at rest in the cemetery here. Was lucky to be able to visit Bolton Hall which is not open to the public.
Love Bolton Abbey. Parked at the pavillion and walked over the bridge to the Abbey. Good paths. Interesting views but upset at the stepping stones are out of action due to missing stones but didnt affect a lovely afternoon
Beautiful place , car park £15, hope the duke of Devonshire puts the prices down with his £50,000 a year tax cut off the government. Stepping stones (dangerousstones missing and not replaced . The Abbey and grounds are stunning
A beautiful place to visit, nice walk by the river and across the stepping stones (if brave enough!Lovely Priory and Abbey ruins
Beautiful Abbey steeped in history .The grounds were brilliant loads to see and do .some of the hills are quite steep but all in all a fantastic day out
Bolton Abbey is somewhere I have revisited every few years from being a child, it is magical and offers the chance to capture great memories. The walks are lovely and the views fantastic. Bolton Abbey and Strid Wood offer something many other places don’t. It’s a shame not everyone can pick up their rubbish when leaving, as there are plenty of bins available to get rid of it.
A beautiful place to go by yourself or with your family. Lots of families out enjoying themselves. Really nice walks to go on too with great scenery.
One of my favourite places in the world and has been since I was a child. I am now 40 and it still has the same charm as it did back then. If you want a nice pleasant walk/day out with the children, I would highly recommend. If the sunshine is out, you can even enjoy a paddle in the river.
Stunning! Beautiful riverside walk to this gorgeous ancient church ruin. Car park very pricey but the friendliest, most welcoming and helpful staff on the planet! I LOVE Yorkshire!
Parking is a bit expensive and you have to stay in the one car park. Not good for disabled people or people with poor mobility. But I absolutely loved Bolton Abbey xxxx
Beautiful place. Disgusting parking charges. The walk is lovely along the river and to the waterfall but they charge £15 for parking which I personally think is horrific. £15 whether youre there 1 hour or 12 hours.Basically just capitalising on nice scenery because thats all that is there. As I say nice place, ruined by greed.
A lovely place, the Priory, river and surrounding area is simply beautiful. Also the start of the walk to Simons seat!
A lovely walk with beautiful, historical views.
Lovely place for walks and outing.Kids can enjoy a lot..Nice view from the river bank also..
Scenic abbey near the Wharfdale - very picturesque. It’s very close to Skipton and can be a good option for daytrips around the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Fantastic place to visit and a wonderful area to explore.
Again lots of walking trails and fun trails for smaller children. Plenty of car parking and space by the river wharfe. You dont feel crowded, toilets and cafe at the car park, lots of trails at Strid wood
Just beautiful, stunningly scenic beyond words, and the river is awesome for open water swimming at the right times of the year. If you do visit, take your empty products away with you, its the Yorkshire Dales.
July 2022. Visited Bolton Abbey. Been wanting to travel there for sometime and wasnt disappointed. Set in a fantastic position on the banks of the River Wharfe, I pondered what life as a monk wouldve been like living there in the 12 century. Very peaceful I guess compared to the buzz of the tourists and traffic it now has passing through! Will be visiting again as I didnt get to see the Strid or Simon Seat. Brilliant day, worth going to see.
Visited Bolton Abbey on Thursday 23rd June.First time visit here went with my mum. The day was very hot so walking was a bit hard going because the humidity was very high ( we both have copd and arthritisWe started off by going to the strid car park (3 car parks in total). The cost was £15 which got you into and around the whole grounds. First off we had our breakfast on the strid carpark cafe which cost £11.50 for 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and beans and little tomatoes plus about 6 pieces of toast and a cup of tea. The other items were a bit on the pricey side but what isnt these days!! After we had finished we then started the walk to the strid ( river wharfwhich was a long way away up and down steep paths. There are benches where you can have a sit down here and there.( definitely needed!!When we finally got there it was worth a visit ( pics uploaded). After this we then went to another car park (forgot name?where you can see Bolton Abbey and where the stepping stones are across the river ( some stones are missing so you cannot get across without getting wet). Walked down a longish path from the car park to the river and view of the Abbey ( no pics of Abbey, etc. My phone battery died. Sorry)We had a good long day ,weather was superb but to visit the whole site would need another day or two for us anyway!! ( not young kids no more lolI would definitely recommend anyone to visit if you like the countryside and walking its a beautiful place and I would love to go back again.
Lovely place to visit. The abbey is great and the river makes it even better. Its especially good fun watching people making fools of themselves on the stepping stones and getting wet to some degree or another.Theres a nice walk alongside the river up to a cafe and toilets. Cross the bridge first for a harder walk up some steep slopes.
Great place for families to relax by the river, great to see the Abbey and read the history behind it. There is a walk around the river its beautiful however not completely suitable to do full lap if you have a pram/wheelchair. Must see the stepping stones and have a picnic by the river in full view of the Abbey. Can get busy here at times great place to make memories
Lovely priory in the grounds of Bolton Abbey. Amazing windows and altar with floral designs behind it, see photo. Grounds are largely ruins but some quite extensive remains in places. Good guide book available. Great atmosphere in the inside of building. I found it quite spiritual to think how many previous generations of people had walked with ground before me.
Awesome day out, nice area for a walk and picnic
Lovely location for this Abbey Church and ruins. Grounds and graveyard very well maintained. Graves mainly 19th century, and a separate section for cremated remains. Car access available only for those attending Sunday services. Magazine indicates an active community support for the church.
Great place to walk around and have lunch!
Lovely place for walks and picnics on the grass. Deducting a star because £15 for 1 days parking is insane. I think its cheaper to park at lake Windermere than here and theres arguably more to do in Bowness-on-Windermere than at the priory. Ill be taking the bus here next time for sure.
Bolton Abbey is a beautiful piece of history, surrounded by picturesque Yorkshire countryside. A lovely day out with a picnic and ice cream.£15 entry for parking is on the steep side, but ultimately it is a destination that you must visit if in the area!
Beautiful place for a day out
Beautiful abby and grounds, with a couple of cafes, a used bookshop, and gift shop on the same property. The church is still in use, and although we didnt go into the service being held, we caught glimpses of the inside of the church and heard some of the singing. We will certainly plan to attend at some point, it all seemed beautiful!
A sunny day, ruins, history and beautiful surroundings. It was delightful to wander round and learn about the Abbey and then enjoy the river and park.
Brilliant day out for all ages, you can picnic by the river or take a long walk out along it and back the other side. Beware of using the stepping stones at the moment, at my time of writing there are several missing creating rather large gaps to traverse!
Lovely walk. Peaceful and beautiful. Enjoy it alone or enjoy with the family. Highly recommend.
Amazing place, massive walk. Good for pushchairs and friendly people
Absolutely stunning!!!! Great value for money. Lovely walk with lots to see.Only down fall is not being able to change dates after booking
Excellent views and surroundings. Plenty of walks, great for kids go run about and kick a ball etc. Toilets clean. Will definitely visit again.
Absolutely stunning church. Really felt at peace in there. After what has been an awful few months, it was exactly what we needed and a perfect way to complete our trip to Bolton Abbey
Nice sunny winter afternoon wander around the grounds. Neatly kept and good paths. Ice cream van, but it was a little cold for one today. There are several longer walks along the river, but I just stuck to the Abbey grounds this time.Lovely place to visit.
A top destination. The abbey sits in stunning surrounds, and with the stepping stones and welly walk has a couple of activities that will keep the kids entertained for hours. We stayed much longer than we expected.
I visited Bolton Abbey, it is a Very beautiful and nice place for picnic, with beautiful. countryside, landskap. Enough parking spaces. Kids will enjoy . You can book a parking space online. Toilets are clean and accessible. Prices of cold drinks n icecream are fairly high. Lovely place for walks. Staff is very friendly.
Very nice place, nice walk, but for me the cherry on the top was the waterfall. Not the easiest to access, but worth the effort. One of the best places in the area.
Lovely summers day out. Lots to see and do. Great for a walk in the woods or along the river or if you fancy a BBQ.
Bolton Priory located within the grounds of Bolton Abbey is a fine example of preserved ruins. You could easily spend a whole day here. You can do a walk along the river, cross the river via the stepping stones or the bridge. There is a walk in woodlands too as well as a walk for children with slides and places to explore. The grounds are picturesque and peaceful. The grounds are ideal to have a picnic. Theres also an ice cream stand by the ruins and River. When I visited it was a very hot day and there were loads of people swimming or paddling in the river.I turned up on the day without pre-booking the parking and it cost me £12.50. If you pre-book itll cost £10.If you visit youll enjoy your day!
I just love the place. Its beautiful area. Priory, river, stepping stones, woods. Cafe on the middle walk to rest and grab some drink or sandwich. And souvenir shop is there too.
Beautiful place and wonderful get away for couples and families with children and dogs. This place will charm you and will stay long in your memories. Rustic England in a nutshell, the Duke of Devonshires Yorkshire Dales estate of Bolton Abbey is a thoroughly charming place fora camping holiday. With some 30,000 acres of rolling countryside and woodland, flanking the scenic banks of the River Wharfe, theres plenty of space around here for campsites. And, if it sounds a lot to get to grips with, its a well-drilled visitor experience that starts for most at the petite estate village of Bolton Abbey itslef, seven miles east of Skipton. The estate has 80 miles of footpaths in total – heather moorland to woodland trails – with detours through evocative-sounding destinations like the Valley of Desolation and many of the paths are pushchair-friendly (kids love the riverside; theres even a beach area below the priory ruins). I would definitely recommend to visit this place. 👍
A excellent day out highly recommended for a healthy walk and sight seeing, the waterfalls well worth viewing in the valley of desolation £10 fee to park your vehicle then you have access to acres of beautiful and historic buildings and walks in magnificent and stunning countryside
The landscape is awesome. It’s well designed to for all ages, especially the Welly Walks; walking along the riverside, woodland and moorland paths. My advice is wear appropriate clothes and check the weather before setting off.The kids had lots of fun running around and also had something to showcase at school (Show and Tell). A place to be with the kids during school half term.Interestingly, saw some families having a BBQ, by the river towards Barden Bridge.
Lovely place, and amazing value when you consider the small fee charged to enter and park, we payed £11 and spent most of the day here. Some of the attractions have restrictions on dogs, and dogs need to be kept on the lead at all times which is a minor hassle, but probably welcomed by those who dont have dogs. This is all detailed on their website which is very informative, up to date, and accurate. We visited the ruins, walked in ancient woodland alongside the river on very well maintained gravel paths, saw the rapids at Strid, ate ice cream, and paddled in the river. There are a number of picnic sites all over the estate, but we decided to use a table shaped boulder by the river which was rather picturesque. One way systems are in place due to Covid which not all people followed, but you didnt feel crowded due to the sheer size of the estate.
We stopped off here on our way back from our break in the Dales. Easy pre book system and only £10 to park and roam free. The scenery is gorgeous. Sitting by the river listening to it flow past was so relaxing. Well worth the stop.
What a beautiful place to visit! We visited through autumn with all the lovely golds, oranges and reds beginning to come through.Finding Bolton Abbey was easy and they have their own car park with plenty of parking. Also at the car park is a post office, tea rooms and wc.There are several different walks on offer for all abilities and ages meaning plenty of adventure for all including the stepping stones across the river. Maps are provided at the main parking. Parking isnt free, cost £10 for parking for us on a Saturday visit. The Priory is a magnificent place with beautiful stained glass window which are just magical when the sun is shining through them. There are other car parks further along the walks if you wish to explore the top part of the walk separately.Dependant on the walk you take this can be both a good couple of hours out or maybe even a full day with picnic.I am definitely glad I visited the area and would come back again.
