Boll Family YMCA - Personal trainer in Detroit, United States
I enjoy this place it clean and safe.Water Aerobics is one of my favorite class and the instructor is the best.
Great gym for the price.
I’ve been coming here for 10 years and I always enjoy the classes. I’ve taken Silver Sneakers, Strength training, Tai Chi, Yoga, the works. I train year round on the indoor track. My daughter loves the rock wall and swimming. The staff and instructors are friendly and wonderful.
The staff are friendly but the hours are annoying, and the workout equipment is sub par. They don’t have enough workout equipment and a lot of the machines they do have are either useless or unusable.
I can only speak to the preschool swim class, but I’m so happy that I enrolled my daughter (3.5 years oldin swim class here! She started with basically no water skills, and five lessons later can jump into the pool, put her face in the water, and swim a bit with a kick board. She’s much more confident getting in and out of the water and is always eager to get out of the house on swim class mornings. Her teacher, Malachi, was excellent with the kids: super patient and kind, gave clear instructions, and kept the class moving while also giving individual attention to each kid. Also, the family changing room is nice, and the pool is well-laid-out for lessons for little kids.
Great fitness center. Staff are super Ive been a member for over 15 years.
Staff is very nice and helpful! Swimming pool area and locker rooms are very clean.
I am giving a 4 star only because it seems the only time you can get a lane in the lap pool is at the Crack of dawn. Dont even try in the evening 😒 smh
The people are friendly, the facilities are clean and in great shape. Overall great experience.
The experience I had on the 7th of this month afternoonish when I went to just get info and a schedule the young man was very rude he wouldnt answer questions I asked just nasty. A very racist undertone. He looked to be about 16. I wish I got his name but he has very poor customer service.
Took my grandbaby for swimming lessons. Clean roomy. Excellent instructers and support staff. Program cost very cheap
Everyone is very nice. I used the pool with my kids both times I visited. The life guards were extremely kind and helpful. They made my experience wonderful. Because of that I’m going to make sure I change my ymca home membership location. A lady at the front fixed my family account and made checkin smooth. Thank you
Tried to get my nephew into the summer program went in was giving PAPERWORK by MANUAL and for MY records took a picture of the application along with paying the fee .. Come to find out MANUAL gets amnesia and tells me my nephew isnt listed and I wasnt there and to make things even worst ( he claims they never had paper application I dont appreciate the lies especially when dealing with children .. And its just Lies after Lies .. just be honest and take responsibility ... If you didnt submit it or misplaced it .. acknowledge that .. Also the fact his manager or higher up JENNY spoke with me and DIDNT accommodate me atleast for my 9 year old nephew .. especially after seeing the picture of the application I took .. its clear the employee dropped the ball .. not me .. not my 9 year old nephew .. I really wanted him to have a fun summer .. but with dishonest people I guess that wont be possible
This facility is a Downtown gem — pristinely maintained, expertly designed, big enough to host activities that can appeal to a wide range of interests. As an organization, they communicate regularly and effectively with members.
Great facility and staff! Manuel at the front desk is particularly helpful.
Didnt go for a work out, went to handle other business. Lobby clean and orderly. Staff was quick and efficient, parking is always a challenge for me.
Everything I like the facilities the staff is the best a very clean quiet peaceful environment to be in I highly recommend this Y they have pretty much everything that you’ll need in a work out facility.
My favorite exercises are basketball, HIIT jump rope and lifting heavy dumbbells. Those exercises are best with big open spaces. Before the pandemic basketball was great but there werent many open spaces for jumping rope and stretching. Since the pandemic, the Y has provided many more open spaces. Coupled with the existing equipment rooms, I feel the Y now offers resources for all types of workouts. The staff is always great, the other members are kind and the facility is beautiful.
Been a proud & active member for 7+ years. Awesome classes, well kept facilities, friendly staff. They always improving the facilities and offerings and are communicative about changes. The Boll cares and keeps getting better and better!
Very good gym. I was impressed also with the basketball court and the area for running.
The staff in this building is very kind. Movie theater . Parking on the side and in the deck across the street great place.
Great facility, it’s just THE FRONT DESK!Not the best customer service skills. Impolite, they don’t listen and you have to repeat the same thing over in order for them to hear what you meant.I could’ve swear I was talking to a rude teenager, not the head of admissions. I can see they hire anybody during this pandemic and even before, Smh terrible.
I love the pool and the locker room is beautiful.Only negative is-no free parking
pools arent nearly as good as the Livonia Ys, but overall pretty nice.
Nicely managed. I use the lap pool and it has been very clean so far.
This YMCA is a first rate friendly, clean, and pleasant environment. The run/walk indoor track is highly recommended. Ive been a member for 5 plus years and have had consistently positive experiences!!!
Sylvester keeps our gym spotless. He works really hard keeping it safe & he cleans regularly. Never skips a beat! Give that man a raise because he deserves it!
I have been a member of the YMCA since 2013. When I needed them the most, they were the type of support I needed via multiple levels. Others may be cheaper and offer more razzle dazzle. However, the YMCA is clearly an option for "good" for our Downtown Detroit community.
Have been going there since I was a teen. More than 10yrs later I am still happy with this branch of the Y and so are my children😌
Its a great place. They are doing everything to keep us safe during the pandemic. Equipment and staff are A+++++
I love the Boll Family Y. Ive been a member for years. These days, I use mostly the pool. Great exercise, great facility. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And the Y does great stuff for the community too.
I have reported the organization to the Consumer Finanical Protection Bureau. I paid for a one month member, and was put on auto-pay without my knowledge, or consent. When I went into my account I was unable to switch it off. I checked the FAQ, and the entire website. There is no information about how to cancel, or remove auto pay. This is illegal according to the Federal Trade Commission. What a shame for them.
The great classes offered are by far my favorite thing about the gym.Fun and motivating instructors. Most staff are friendly and welcoming.Located in the heart of downtown.Offers programs for kids in the community and child care for parents who want time to workout. However, there is no parking and you will inevitably get a ticket (or severalif you are a member if you drive. The hours are very limited on the weekends.I find the price high for what is offered and they aren’t a part of the global network of YMCAs so if you travel you can’t use any other Y, which doesn’t make sense with the price being so high.If they invested in a sauna and steam room, it would be a major improvement. All and all because of the classes and sweet staff it is my daily happy place!
If you are looking for a place for the whole family to spend time enjoying each others company while pursuing a healthy way of life this may be the place to do that. My family and I have found this place to be run by all professional staff in evercompletelyt of its operation. The building is always "SHIP SHAPE," or clean. They offer so many resources you have to go to their website because I do not want to type them all and could not if I tried, lol. But I believe it is worth the cost for singles or family. The latest weight machines treadmills and ellipticals stair steppers free weights a completely modern wellness center. Two or three pools. A "CHILD WATCH," where parents may drop off the children for fun, enjoyment and safety while they themselves utilize the Ys resources for fun or exercise. Check it out you will not be sorry. Peace.
Literally every worker there has been helpful, kind, and goes above and beyond in answering any question. I lived in the south for a few years, and one thing that Southerners love is that they have that restaurant where everyone is super polite. I can guarantee that this YMCA has workers that are more polite than the best restaurant youve ever been to.
I called to cancel my membership a year ago and now found out Ive been being charged $56 on a monthly basis. I called to see what the mistake was and was treated poorly by management and was instructed I needed to cancel in person. That was not brought to my attention 12+ months ago when I cancelled or thought I did over the phone. Beyond disappointed and furious about the lack of remorse and understanding. I still have to go in to cancel and now Im out $672 for a service I never received the benefits for.
I really enjoy the Boll YMCA its clean , everyone is friendly and the trainers are very helpful. My one problem is the parking. I do have the parking app of my phone 2 hours for $2.15. I was wondering why there is not a parking lot for the YMCA since our tags are used to get in why cant we us it also to get in the parking lot. This would get more people to work out and less time circulating the block for a parking space.
The staff in the welcome center are knowledgeable, professional and courteous. The lifeguards are alert and very watchful. The lifeguards deserve a raise too. The YMCA is clean, spacious and fun.
Decent YMCA with a classic weight/treadmill area, basketball/racquetball court, workout studios, and a daycare. The classes have great times during the day and the instructors are awesome. Monthly membership prices are good for the value
Worked there for a few months in child watch. Didnt get paid for my first two days because the director J. Castleberry says she wasnt able to put it in on time. Dig that.Love the kids but my boss mustve just qualified because you can tell she doesnt know what shes doing. I on numerous occasions was to work the child center afterwards. Center is ran like a mad house. I wish i could give it no stars. I dont have any credential or cpr/first aide but was assigned to watch up to 4 infants or more. Teachers having altercations in the classroom with infants and also a parent in the classroom. Smh. Both teachers shouldve been fired. Not enough food to feed all. Seen a teacher often twerking in a class full of 1-2 year olds. I wouldnt recommend my pet there. Some gets spanked. A infant head hit the floor and staff lied about what happened to the parent. A coworker assumed the infant could seat up with no help. Coworker has no past experience with infants. Some teachers bring there own preteens- teenagers to help out in the center. Smh. Question yourself: do those cameras really work? Would you want your child there? The director of Jeanine Castleberry just cover things up, talk to the parents and not tell them everything make it sound not so bad or she directs one of the of the teachers to do that. Casselberrys assistant would do a better job than she does, Miss Johnson.Sleeping teachers. Always out of ratio. I was only supposed to watch classrooms when teacher wants to go on lunch break. But teachers calling off, walking off, and quitting with no notice... Certified teachers being offered 9.70 hour smdhThe director is informed of all incidences. Plus its cameras in every room. Not sure if they work. But i doubt it because too much be going on. I see why YMCA runs threw directors. I was fired. Was sad and glad at the same time. I will miss my kids from child watch. Especially Nico Westin Natalie Isaac and Arie. I very much enjoyed creating Arts and Crafts with them. I also was told Child Watch has never been so much fun. That means a lot to me.
I Havent been too pleased with my experience here. I called on May 3rd, the time was around 2:30 pm to 3 pm. The front desk guy was rude, short, and when I said thank you, he said uh huh. If your inquiring about a service that your paying for, please dont act like Im bothering you when Im the customer. No one at the desk returns messages and half the time they never have a clue about anything. The professionalism with some staff is mediocre for other reasons I prefer not to get into. Im just not too pleased.
Wow I wish I would had read the reviews before I came to this place. I am in tears and literally hurting on the inside. My 3 year old son woke me up this morning asking to go swimming. I work nearly every day so we hardly spend time together. I called YMCA 3 times to confirm the pull was opened to the public before I arrived at 0945am. It took two people 30 minutes to sign us in as guest. They took my money and for whatever reason wrote down my credit card information. By the time we got dressed to get in the pool my son and I were kicked out because they were having classes. As we were getting dressed he was crying because he thought he did something wrong and he kept apologising to me. I did not know how to explain to a 3 year old how you guys made a mistake. Instead I had to apoligize to him as if I did something wrong. Oh on top of that! They didnt give me my money back. She said they had to wait until Monday?? Telling from the comments.. Doesnt sound to promising. Please dont waste a special moment in this place 💔
Great facility! There are plenty of options for anyone at all fitness levels looking to get in a workout or class. Staff are helpful and welcoming. Always familiar and friendly faces. A greatly diverse and all-inclusive membership.
been coming here for a bit. good location, amenities, nice atmosphere, and very well kept locker rooms. the multiple levels are a bit weird(4 floorsbut are accommodated well with larger elevators for those unable to use stairs easily.
This is a nice facility to workout and I really enjoy their fitness classes too.The gym has a nice view of Downtown Detroit and the facility is clean. My only complain is that sometimes is hard to find parking especially if there is a big event going on in Downtown.
I registered my daughter for a program online. The program ended up being cancelled and I was told to expect my refund within 3-5 days. Never happened! Called several times to find out why and was always put through to an answering service to leave a message. Left several messages and never once did I received a call back. Finally, two weeks later, I called any and all #s I could find and actually reached a person. Found out my refund was never processed and to expect it in a few days. Flat out unacceptable!!!!! And if I could, I wouldnt even give them 1 star.
The pools are usually a yellowish color due to the huge amount of pee content. The Branch Operations Director, Tom Bender, decided that it was fair to cancel my ymca membership, but only after collecting dues for one more additional month after electing to cancel the account. He cited that there is a policy that required a member to come in person to cancel the account but he somehow was able to cancel my account without me coming in person. It happened 34 days after originally requesting for it to be canceled. It seems very strange that his procedure is only important to follow before he receives an additional months pay. Otherwise, the account would still be open now.
Great facility, friendly staff, good atmosphere! I just wish there was a sauna and or steam room for the overall work out experience. 5 stars regardless
Great equipment in weight room. The staff is the best. The weight room has a killer view of Tigers Stadium. Best gym in Michigan!
I sent my child to their child care facility for three months. At first I was quite happy. All the teachers seemed great and the kids did a lot of activities. I was especially excited that they went to the library every week. Until one day I walked over there to find out that they go over to the library to watch videos. I noticed the care providers would yell across the room to the children, instead getting up and talking to them on their level. The last straw was when it came time to sign a new contract, they increased my automatic debits by $80 without informing first. When I told them this would not work for my family, they took the money anyway. Upon asking for a refund, I was told it would take 2-4 weeks to get back over $400. Im not quite sure WHY it only took them 1 day to take the money, but it takes at least 14 to return it. Upon trying to contact the executive director, I was repeatedly ignored. I would not send my child to their facilities for child care. Theyre more about business and their bottom line than the true care and nurturing of children.
