Simple Indonesian eatery with a relaxed vibe featuring noodle & rice dishes, plus soup.
Completely delicious. Really enjoyed the spring rolls, rendang and tea. Wish we had this in Richmond! Terima Kasih!
Excellent food and a very friendly staff. I recommend the fusion rolls.
I dont know that I had ever had Indonesian food before this, but it was excellent! Such good and so many flavors. My friend and I both enjoyed the spicy sauce in the spoon.
Thank you for taking good care of us last night Daniel.Mark and his partner are the best restaurant owners I have ever seen in all of the 47 or so states I have been to, as well as other countries. I am sad they will be closing in December, but will have many happy memories of getting delicious, healthy food while always receiving genuine kindness from all of the staff here.Everyone needs to come see for yourself what I mean over the next 2 months! Someday I hope to travel to Indonesia, but doubt even the restaurants there will compare to what I have enjoyed at BoBoKo…6 stars!
Amazing food. Waitress was so helpful. Every dish was fresh and flavorful!
I WISH I COULD FLY OR TELEPORT. TO THIS PLACE.Excellent service from David and rest of staff--incredibly friendly and careful with any food allergies. Food was fresh, aromatic, delicious. I asked for extra spice and I recieved it cooked in there perfectly and balanced.Vegan Dishes: Vegan Rendang (Jackfruit!Potato and Tofu curry, and Tofu summer rolls.Respective to Bangladeshi cuisine: the Rendangs flavoring and color was reminiscent of Korma with a warming undertone of ginger, moist and dryer than traditional curries, but still packing a ton of flavor. The Potato and Tofu curry was spiced liked chicken curry, also very warm with ginger and coconut milk. Summer rolls were very fresh. TOFU used in these dishes did not have freezer burn taste or old chewy taste. Every bite tasted so fresh. AND THEN THE BILL. Very very affordable, and portions generous. All the best to this place.
So So amazing food. Now I understand why this place has 5 stars.
Being from Asia, this was an absolute find! The food was delicious and the flavors were on point. Service was top notch. LOVED IT!! Two words : EAT HERE!! 😊😊
Absolutely amazing! I loved how everything was made to order and you can add or change the spice as much as you want. the atmosphere and the workers were all Super friendly and knew which table ordered what. It made me feel so relaxed and at ease. After living here for 17+ years, This is definitely a hidden gem and a must!!!!!
One of the best restaurants in the valley! Just wish they were open a little later.
Incredible (veganfood, attentive and friendly staff, affordable prices.
We love Indonesian food and the taste is very lacking. We had the chicken rendang, veggies with tempe and Indonesian fried noodles with tofu.
Food is excellent. Staff always makes you feel welcome. When you leave, you always feel like you want to go back. The staff is great!
Food was amazing, and friendly service, what more can you ask for? I had the beef rendang and it was bangin
WonderfulIts very small (just 7 tablesso one waitress works the tables, but also one owner works to go orders and also keeps an eye on the tables. So between the two of them the service is great.Food is fantastic too, we went there for 2 days in a row and tried about a half of the menu (like the place the menu is pretty small too). There wasnt one thing we didnt like.If I am ever in Harrisonburg again will definitely make it a point to go again.
This place is amazing. Stopped in from Long Island and I’m blown away with this deliciousness. They were able to cater to all my allergies. Service was also exceptional!! Our server was Daniel.
One of the best restaurants in Harrisonburg, hands down. The potato/tofu curry and the fried rice are my usual go-tos, but this is one of those menus where everything on there is guaranteed to be delicious. Its a small restaurant, but everything is just right, really cozy space and very friendly people. Always worth a stop whenever youre in the Burg!
Please take the time from your busy day to dine-in or carry-out from this delightful menu of Indonesian cuisine. Beautifully presented, fragrant and delicious. Something different! Highly recommended. Great staff also!
This is not authentic Indonesian food and yes I am Indonesian. Let’s start there. The website says it’s “inspired” by Indonesian cuisine and yet “Indonesian Cafe” is attached to the restaurant name. It’s a bit misleading. If Indonesian food flavor palate is normally a 10, this place’s flavoring maybe goes up to a 4 if I’m being generous.Let’s start with what I ate.Sate - first of all the color of the sauce is incorrect, like they used too much water and not enough of the peanut sauce (bumbu kacang). The chicken was not it for me either. I ate one and honestly didn’t want to even finish it.The sambal has no taste to it. No spice no flavor. It was almost like I ate tomato sauce. I had to get someone else to taste it in case I was hallucinating but nope they agreed. No flavor no spice.Nasi beef rendang - while the rendang was soft, it’s also flavorless and not what rendang should be. Like they didn’t simmer it long enough to absorb any of the flavor. This felt more like beef stew (minus the stewof some sort more than rendang. The stir fry vegetables doesn’t normally accompany rendang, maybe pecel would have been better. I tried the stir fry veggies, and it was just okay. Odd but okay. It’s definitely nothing like anything I’ve ever tried in Indonesia.Soto - let me preface this with saying that I use to eat soto at least once a week. I LOVED soto and even better when it’s cold outside. This is not it. It has hints of what soto should taste like, but it’s like they didn’t simmer it long enough to absorb the flavor. It’s also like they’re missing a key ingredient that I just can’t name. In fact, I sent a photo to another Indonesian and first thing they said was, is that Tom Yum? (Thaias a joke because it was not soto.I don’t want people to be misled thinking this is an authentic Indonesian restaurant because it’s not. I don’t want Indonesian food to be misrepresented that people think that this is how it should taste like. This may be inspired by Indonesian food but it’s certainly not Indonesian food. I was so disappointed.
Amazing. We were visiting Harrisonburg for the weekend and were drawn here by the excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. Delicious food and absolutely fantastic service. The only downside to this place that it is not located near me.
An incredible hole-in-the-wall environment with unique menu options and very friendly staff. There’s only a few tables so the service was very attentive, and when there was a little mixup, they quickly and kindly brought out the right dish. The vegetarian and vegan options here were next-level, and I am so glad I got the chance to try the Jackfruit Rendang, something I really liked but wouldn’t have gotten to try anywhere else. Would highly recommend! The portions are a tiny bit small, so make sure to include some apps or dessert.
All the vegan/vegetarian menu items have the same trio of slightly overcooked vegetables. The jackfruit rendang was flavorful, but it was way too mushy and had lost all its natural texture. The housemade tart was delicious.
One of the best meals I have ever had. Service was over the top. I wish I didnt live 2 hours away, I would be there several times a week if not. Keep up the fantastic authentic work BoBoKo. Thank you for a fantastic experience. I will be back
We had a spring rolls and fried rolls as appetizers and also ordered a few entrees. Everything was delicious and the sauces were great. The sambal had great flavor and just enough heat.
We were in town for a snow tubing trip in Massanutten. We decided to venture out one night into Harrisonburg and found this place on trip advisor as one of the top places to eat. It is a small cafe with maybe 4-5 tables. We arrived early around 5pm and were seated right away. I did notice of the tables were already reserved so that’s an option also. We also noticed alot of people picking up food to go. So even though a small place, it was quite busy. Our server was very pleasant, friendly, and helpful since it was our first time eatinghere, and for some, first time eating Indonesian fare. We perused the menu and decided to share a bunch of the entrees. Chicken satay, spiced salmon, Beef redang, Indonesian noodles, papaya salad appetizer, and macaroons for dessert. Each entree came with white steamed rice and a vegetable medley. All of it was delicious!! We barely had leftovers( the rice only!!!yes even the sauces were sopped up quickly, esp the satay sauce. I could just eat that alone with a spoon! 😂The food came out pretty fast all cooked to order. I would highly recommend a trip here if you’re in town and want something different. We would definitely come back next trip here. The kids (age7loved it too!
A true hidden gem on the outskirts of downtown Harrisonburg. The food is flavorful, service is attentive without being "too much", and its just a fun environment. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is well-versed in Indonesian food or those who have never tried it before.
Stumbled upon this restaurant during our day trip to Harrisonburg and it was the first time my friends and I tried Indonesian food! It was generally yummy. We were adventurous and wanted to try tempeh but we didnt love the tempeh summer rolls. Probably wouldnt get that again but the other dishes were good!
OH. MY. SWEET. DELICIOUSNESS.Best random stop ever!Everything was delicious, unique, scrumptious, fresh, just wonderful. The atmosphere is quaint and lovely. Our server was freaking fabulous (Hi, Daniel! Thanks again!but the other server was just as awesome, and everyone was so friendly, warm, helpful, and kind.I live in Arkansas and 10/10 I will drive my tail back to Virginia just to eat here again.
Great food!! We had the fusion spring rolls. Each of us got entrees from the street food section of the menu. Shared the mango, ginger, Nutella spring roll with vanilla ice cream. Service was quick and charming. Very clean. We will be back early and often. If you favor quality over quantity this is your place. They do an active takeout business.
Ive never had Indonesian food before and I really enjoyed it. I got the chicken noodle soup since it was a rainy day. It has a nice lemongrass flavor and was exactly what I wanted. My girlfriend ordered the butternut squash soup and that had a much deeper flavor than the chicken noodle soup. So of youre on the fence between the two, Id go for the butternut squash!
I’d give this place a 6 if I could! They were so sweet and the food was DELICIOUS. It turned out after we waited a while that they’d lost our order, but they immediately refunded us completely, expedited our order, gave me a free tea refill, and two macaroons!! They apologized profusely for the delay and were just so kind. On top of that, they have great and clearly labeled vegan options, and the food is super flavorful! 100% recommend! Thanks for a great experience, Boboko!
Great Indonesian food with a wide variety of dishes. Highly recommended if youre vegan or vegetarian, as they have a multitude of options. Wish they had more seating but cant complain otherwise.
This was a purely chance find while we were on our way back from West Virginia to our AirBnB in Virginia. The menu I really good balance of vegetarian/vegan and non vegetarian dishes. I ordered the Asian fusion spring roll which was a fried spring roll with spinach and goat cheese filling. The roll was very crispy, seasoned well and the cheese was oozing out when I bit into it. The hot sauce accompaniment was perfect side to compliment the sweetness of the goat cheese. For the mains I ordered the traditional dish Nasi goreng, which had an accompaniment of pickled carrots and cucumbers, with tempeh satay. The rice was perfectly cooked and beautifully flavors in a soy-ginger based sauce. The flavors of the rice was matched with the subtle tanginess from the pickled veggies and the sweetness from the peanut based sauce from the tempeh satay. The hostess was very polite and helped us with recommendations for the dishes based on our needs and taste.
Absolutely delicious! Extremely friendly staff, they welcomed me when I walked in and even helped me understand the parking permit stuff that gave me some trouble. I had the Beef Rendang and two Macarons. If I wasnt passing through this city I would definitely make this a frequent place to eat.
Smells and tastes like Omas house! Authentic Indonesian food with some modern twists. Owner is from Java and super friendly. Every dish we tried was amazing. Definitely coming back. And soon!
Great, GREAT food and very friendly staff. I was apprehensive about liking anything on the menu but I loved everything I tried and wolfed down my entree (chicken fried rice). Their hot sauce was so good I got some to go and their desserts were to die for. I wasnt even hungry for dessert but I finished mine and had some of my brothers.
Never had this kind of food before and we were just really impressed. Nice flavor, friendly and pleasant staff. Our server made very good recommendations for first-timers like ourselves. Reasonable prices as well.Be warned that the Indonesian coffee is quite strong, but yes very good :)
The staff was incredibly friendly and the food was incredible. We stopped in the other night for the first time and realized that all the inside seating was taken. It was a bit cold out so we didnt want to sit outside. They let us know they could deliver to Pale Fire so we sat over there instead. The food was so good. We will definitely be coming back to try everything on the dessert menu as that all looked incredible. Overall a great experience and cant wait to try more on their menu.
I stopped by on a multi-day drive for dinner. I found them via the Happy Cow app (I am vegan). The staff was so, so friendly and the service was very quick, even for dine-in. Vegan options are clearly labeled on the menu. I had the spring rolls and fried rice. I cant recommend them enough!! The pickled vegetables in the fried rice take it up a notch.
We had never had Indonesian food before but while visiting the area we were very intrigued to give it a try and we were not disappointed. We were warmly greeted by our server, Anna as soon as we walked in the door. Its a very small space but they are taking Covid precautions seriously. If there isnt room, I like the fact you can order food and take it to the brewery a few steps away. They are only allowing a certain amount of patrons in, all staff wear masks and they ask that you wear masks as much as possible. This made us comfortable and we appreciated it. We had the sampler for the appetizer. Some of it was vegetarian. We are not vegetarian but it didnt matter, the flavors were amazing and it was all delicious. The food is very fresh. We shared our entrees of the slow cooked chicken and salmon. Again, both excellent. So much flavor. I was also very impressed by how good even the vegetables were. I hate carrots and I ate all of mine. The iced tea is also delicious. We were full so didnt have dessert but I dont doubt it would have been amazing. If you get a chance, try this place. Next time we are in the area, we will be back. And special thanks to our server Anna. What a true joy she is. So so kind and sweet. What a pleasure she made our experience! BoBoKo is a gem.
We enjoyed the food. Excellent service.
I LOVE Indonesian food as I grew up with it. This restaurant knows how to stay true and authentic. Lovely rendang meat and nasi. Compared to other Indonesian restaurants I’ve visited, this one had a limited menu (not that wide variety given the rich Indonesian kitchensand perhaps quite expensive as well. But still LOVE this.
Whilel looking for another local place to eat we came upon this restaurant which was listed as the number one place to eat in the Harrisonburg Virginia area. That kind of standing requires a visit! We decided on the appetizer platter to start. On it I found the best spring roll I have ever had. They call it the spring roll fusion. Filled with spinach, goat cheese, apple, and golden raisin, it is a go out and get it now! Our entrees arrived and both were really good. I got the beef rendang which I give a woud recommend but I believe Ill try the chicken next time instead of the beef. My wife got the Indonesian fried noodles and it was definitely a would recommend. We then both ordered dessert, the banana Nutella spring rolls and the mango ginger Nutella spring rolls. They were both a woud recommend! I have to say that the recommendation by other locals was well wanted and I really enjoyed this restaurant.
First time having Indonesian food and it was great. Fast and friendly service. Lots of vegan options also which is awesome!
Excellent food and even better service! A small dining area to grab a taste of Indonesian fare. The tempeh spring rolls, vegan rendang, and macarons were outstanding! I would highly paying this place a visit if you drop into Harrisonburg!
Great authentic Indonesian food with wonderful engaging staff in small cafe atmosphere. Will definitely return during next trip to Harrisonburg.
Freshly made macarons!...oh, and also a great selection of culturally rich food that you should find extremely delightful and surprisingly nuanced.Service is friendly and prompt. The only downside of this place is that it only seats about 20. But you should stop in anyway.Highly recommend the goat cheese spring roll, and of course the macarons.
We arrived on a whim one Saturday afternoon in August, not knowing what we were in the mood for, except something different. We were greeted by a well-spoken red-headed greeter, server, raconteur. The dining area is small, even cozy, with just enough room between tables. Overall the area is bright, clean, and well appointed. We felt very welcomed and sat immediately. Our new friend is very knowledgeable about the menu, her explanations of taste and recommendations we’re spot on.For beverages, the iced tea with a hint of vanilla is an addicting combination and frankly the best iced tea I’ve had yet.We started off with the appetizer platter, two each of crispy spring rolls and summer rolls with a sweet soy peanut sauce. The summer rolls are delicious, but the crispy spring rolls are outstanding; made with spinach, goat cheese, apples, and golden raisins. This platter is portioned for two to four people and well priced at $11.25.We had chicken rendang, $13.95, it is slow-cooked in coconut milk and exotic spices. Served with rice, mixed vegetables, and Indonesian crackers; it was fantastic. The experience is first-rate, as is the food. The portions are generous with prices being very reasonable. The only thing little about Boboko is the size, the food and it’s people are tremendous. This needs to be on anyone must-try list.
This is a cool little place to feel like you have traveled to Asia. Delicious!!
The food was delicious! The chicken randeng and beef randeng were both extremely tastey. A little spice but not too much. The flavor was unique, the spices were perfectly balanced and the vegetables perfectly cook retaining their crunch but so flavorful. The mango ginger nutella spring roll were to die for. Definitely will visit again when we are in Harrisonburg!
