Recreated Black Forest village farm of 16th-18th centuries, with storehouse, bakery, mills & crafts.
Great place to see the culture, traditions and life of black forest people...it takes atleast 3 hours to walk around and see the places... Great fun for kids...
Nice museum in a beautiful location
Great experience especially when you attend some of the interactive events such as the Mill house.
I got a lot of pleasure. Beautiful place.Must visit again🙌🏼
There was a lot of maintenance work going on around the village, which I understand is necessary but it took away from the old-worldy experience. The buffet which was included in our tour was OK. The highlights were the buildings themselves and the demonstrations of butter making and cuckoo clocks.
Fun n beautiful when weather is lovely
Very interesting examples of life in a farm. We saw a demonstration of butter churning and of quarters for people and animals.
This was a great day out for myself, my dad and my son. Wish we had had more time there.
A great way to spend the day. Trip advisor says it should only take a couple of hours but my family felt rushed when we were only there for 6 hours. We could have easily spent the whole day there and we wish we did!
Lovely place, great history and the buildings were remarkable to gobthrough. And we had a really good tour guide for our tour.
Excellent half day spent here.Be sure to check out the moving story of Schondelmaier-Christie (Christina Aberlewho was born in 1904 in the big Vogtsbauernhof farmhouse.
A beautiful and interesting museum with plenty of things to see.Highly recommended for families as well as groups and individuals.
Although we had to travel quite a way to get to this museum it was well worth it. They have a train station specifically for the museum which makes it much easier to get to. There was so many traditional houses and you can walk around every single one. Free tours in English are offered and we had an amazing tour guide who I think was called Sylvia who showed us around a couple of the houses in a very small group and gave us so much information we wouldnt have learnt otherwise. Unfortunately when we were there there was no staff in traditional clothing which I was really looking forward to but our experience was amazing anyway, I would really recommend making the journey there.
The price is cheap for what they offer. A must see.You have to park outside and pay €4 and are deducted from the ticket price.
Well laid out and easy to get around. You can visit many houses and see the "old" way of living. Some demonstrations about some old equipment. Very clean all around.
Interesting museum featuring buildings of various designs from different areas of the Black Forest and demonstrations of different tasks and crafts. Several piicnic areas and activities for children.
We had a lovely experience at the museum. It is informative and well designed. The space is very nice and the onsite restaurant was a winner. Food was good and service was extremely kind. The black forest cake was very good!It was a very well spent day!
Wonderful exhibition of the show house of olden days
Its on everyones list. But my concern was, is this just a Disney-thing for families? As an adult with no kids, am I going to get anything out of this experience? This was our first day in the Black Forest region. To steel myself, I fortified with a glass of outstanding white wine at the cafe, and a slice of cake — which turned out to be the only one of the trip. How lucky that both were remarkable. The menu, too, filled with regional specialties, is legit. And then... I proceeded to loose myself in a fantastic afternoon. Exploring the gardens, watching the grain mill work, petting friendly cats, watching bees, imaging life in deep winter, eyes red from smoke, making clock parts, and feeding cows downstairs...It was really an outstanding visit. For English speakers, do not miss the twice daily tours: it brought immeasurable context to life in the Black Forest 100 years ago — as well as access to spaces that you cant go to otherwise. We picked up one half way through our visit, and revisiting things we already saw had an entire new perspective.I left with a deep appreciation for the culture, as embodied by every day living. We caught the bus there and the train back, but I still didnt see everything I wanted to. I cant wait to come back.- luggage storage available at check in- great cafe, and cute cafes outside the complex, too- remarkable gardens- outstanding architecture, and the story of the woodworking school behind it all.The perfect introduction to the region.
We visited as part of our Family German Road Trip and the place was charming. The exhibits are fascinating, with different time periods for various additions and growth of the original farm. If you’ve been to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, US, it has a similar vibe with “history come to life”. The playground is exceptionally large for kids, bathrooms clean and food kiosk with tasty options. Well worth a 1/2 day visit.
A consolidation of regional life of black forest. Resonably informative but not quite easy to follow. The restaurant is awaeful. The most ordinary black forest pastry.
Great place to visit and have a good impression of the old life style of the region. Its is kid friendly and you can have lunch there
Discount entry for wheelchair users. The pathways are fine gravel which is hard to push through and very dusty. The structures are authentic with large transitions for entry. The structure interiors did not appear to be furnished from the 1400s...
Great outing for a family. Very interesting open air museum to spend the day. Nice for kids to explore the houses. There are also two playgrounds which are very nice. One has a water feature so a change of clothes is a good idea.
I love this kind of museums and this one was as I expected- very beautiful and interesting. The houses, the objects, the animals and people were fascinating. It is a fairytale place.
Absolute must visit. Very informative and much fun for young and old. Such great history and well preserved. A beautiful setting and good restaurant facilities.
We paid €24 for two people including parking. Everything was nice and close together so you could easily go between each building and event. We went in June, so the English tours werent running yet (I think they start in July), but we managed to catch a few of the Mills in action and could catch the gist of what was going on.They had a lot of written information around that was in 4 different languages including English, German, French, and Italian (I think). It was an awesome day out looking at how people used to live in the black forest.
Lots of preserved Black Forest buildings with well curated displays. Everything is very well labeled, some just in German, but many in French, English and Spanish as well. The gardens are meticulously cared for. Exhibits on farming and agriculture are the most interesting. Lots of animals for the kids. Worth the visit.
Exceeded expectations based on previous reviews. We had a very interesting & enjoyable day. The houses are reconstructed with skill & attention to detail. A good day out. We thought very good value & excellent for all ages.
True vibes of past in present. Well preserved houses, farm equipments, and people belongings. Huge respect for the family who donated their ancestral belongings for the museum. Entry Fees are Charged.
Lines can be long but its worth the wait. The Museum is interesting, the tours are well laid out and the people working there are nice. Food and Souvenirs are expensive but thats expected. Recommend if you have small kids.
Wonderful wholesome experience. Lots of fun things to see and do. Great place to spend an entire day exploring and learning all about the architecture and culture of the region. Kids will love it. Good facilities and great food on the premises.
This place was so incredible - authentic buildings that were placed here for preservation. Just the history alone makes it worth it, but the beauty of the museum farm is absolutely exquisite. The day I was there, it was incredibly green. I loved walking from one historic farm building to the next and seeing how people lived and worked hundreds of years ago. This place is definitely a must see!
Really lovely spot to learn about the historical buildings, lifestyles, and work in the Schwarzwald region. Lots of English signs but not consistent throughout the exhibits. Enough to whet one’s information appetite.Tip: Don’t use the bathroom near the parking lots. It costs 1€. The toilets in the museum compound are free to use and really clean.
Takes you to the lives of rich landlords of yesteryears. Feel good place
This open air museum was a very good surprise. It very educational and very interesting for all the ages! I really recommend it
Very neat museum where you can walk through all of the houses, touch the displays, and interact with the animals. We thought it would have been in a more wooded area, but that didnt detract from the experience.
It is a beautiful place with lots of information all over, plus free guides at certain hours. There are also lots of workshops showing everything from washing laundry, to pottery, cooking and more. The interactions with the workshop staff are friendly and informative. There is lot of parking. Visiting the museum, one gets a price reduction to parking. In spite of large crowds, one can find hidden spots to enjoy and soak in the atmosphere.Large cues are possible but the ticket staff work quite fast. There is also a fairly large playground for the children
Clean, healing and beautiful place for enjoy cool summer vacation. Please try local Cherry cake. So delicious!
Such an incredible place to visit and explore! The kids loved feeling like they went back in time. Everything is taken good care of. The facilities are very nice and the exhibits are excellent. Such care has been taken to do the time period justice and preserve it.
Excellent examples of traditional historic buildings have been relocated to this open air museum. You can go inside each one and see how people lived in the area from around 1600. Some of the houses are quite similar to each other. The surprises were the really old houses with 1950s and 60s furnishings because they had had continuous occupancy until then!
We had a great morning visiting the open air museum! Interesting and beutiful. Descriptions are in German, English, and French. A rich history to explore. You could easily spend several hours here or come several times and still not see it all. We had a delightful lunch at the restaurant on the grounds. There are also several places to eat right outside the gate as well.
A great place to visit and get to know the building and homes from different centuries of the history of the black forest. You can walk inside most of the building and there is staff walking around dressing like in the old days. There are houses, workshops, farms houses, etc. Very fun for the kids.
This is an open air museum which shows the way people lived in the old days in different parts of the Black Forest. The houses and the stalls have all been rebuilt in line with their very original features. They can all be visited inside. You can also appreciate the different styles of the houses according to the different areas of origin. The overall experience is nice though not the most thrilling attraction you can think of. The museum also hosts some animals and the opportunity to see people dressed in the very traditional attire of the Black Forest.
The museum shows an idea of how people used to live in the past in the Black Forest in various farm houses from different areas in Schwarzwald. I found it very interesting and for the kids there are some fun creative activities (for additional costand playgrounds including a splash playground with water activities for warm days.We enjoyed our visit very much and it was more than we expected!
The open air museum was something we were looking forward to visiting and we had excellent weather for it at 35c and bright.Coming in it was pleasant and everyone spoke good English. Inside there was a large variety of houses and farming tools from old German towns. The houses had been transported and rebuilt here and were beautiful, well kept and fascinating. There were a varity of animals, including goats, horses, sheep and cows, as well as great tools. The museum is accessible to dogs. The one downside was the lack of concrete information in the museum, it was missing some context for the buildings we were seeing, and a lack of explanation for the history behind them. The toilet facilities and the cafe were clean and tidy. Overall the site was well presented and cared for.
A wonderful glimps of how time has passed in the Black Forrest. One original farmhouse that used to be the only museum piece, but through the years they have collected 8 or 9 farmhouses and taken it down board by board and brick by brick and then they re-built them there in Gutach. I did give some advice that they should have more dogfacilities, like water/drink places all around, because we have our dog with us this vacation. They gave me right and said they are going to discuss it. The museum is very recommendable for all ages. Many thanks also to the lady that was weaving. VERY NICE !!!
Nice Museum to know the history of black forest and their habitants. Houses, chapells, farms, beautiful view and a good restaurant will take you in a wonderful experience. Dont miss the black forest cake.
Great place for adults and kids! Small, but just enough to do and see to get an idea of how life was like back in the 1500’s in the Black Forest. Totally worth the drive and your kids can run around on the playground and have a bite to eat next to it. Very convenient!
A fascinating and well-maintained museum with numerous exhibits and detailed descriptions. We spent several hours here and could have spent many more. The buildings themselves are amazing, and the level of care taken in their authentic furnishing shows. I understand that in the summer they even have reenactments of the lives and industries of the people who lived in these houses. From the pictures I saw online I was a bit worried that this museum would be too geared towards children, but I was totally wrong. I experienced constant wonder.
