Black Cat café in Gikongoro
Description
Privilege
Best vegan sausage rolls in London! Fantastic coffee, milkshakes, food and wonderful staff.
MoreGreat place to visit if youre hungry and want a lot of amazing vegan food. Its not in the best location, 15 minutes walk out of Hackney Central, but its sure worth the visit. The food is amazing and the coffee outstanding. Prices are reasonable. Look forward to returning.
MoreVery tasty vegan food, nice people, not expensive and great atmosphere.
Lovely lovely place, been coming here for years, friendly staff, relaxed environment, just all around great vibes, I love black cat 😊
MoreGreat vegan cafe, will surely come back!
Popped in Sunday for lunch! Nice place, staff were nice food was good and Im not vegan either.
MoreFantastic place with comfortable wooden seating benches, pillows along the windows seating, eclectic posters and decor and buzzy but not overtly loud or obnoxious convo happening. Although £12 for my lentil burger made me blanche, the generous sides of salad and housemade slaw (I asked for no fries nor burger bunmade it all worth it. There’s so much on the plate I boxed half for home (I had drank a smoothie before I had arrived here). The slaw in particular is divine: it doesn’t have that gross mayo gloppiness I usually despise. It’s quite fresh. There’s a lovely vinaigrette on the greens and the burger has a moreish artichoke sauce. The staff is friendly as are the customers; dog-friendly too!
MoreAlways great food, big portions, good prices, friendly staff. Casual, cosy atmosphere. Best vegan cafe in Hackney.
MoreReally lovely cafe. The food was incredible. Ill be back to try everything on the menu!
MoreThey simply are the reason I am vegan. Theirs is the best food I ever have had—not the most "authentic" or "gastronomic" or complicated, but simply the best. Slaw with vegetables that are cut so that they are still crunchy without being hard or reduced to pellets. "Chicken," with breading that is crunchy without being too thick, that is the perfect consistency for a sandwich, vegan mayo that tastes like a winning competitor rather than an imitation, pickled cucumbers that would win first prize at a Midwestern county fair, and even fresh lettuce (rather than lettuce that is old and bitter). Even the chips are at the perfect level of doneness and saltiiness. Ive been looking forward to returning here for four years, and it was even better than I hoped for.
MoreBest vegan breakfast in London. Ive had about a million meals from here and the worst Ive ever had was an 8.5.
MoreFavorite place in London. The food is absolutely delicious, the portions are huge, the place is really nice and cozy, and the people are the nicest. The sandwiches and the vegetable pancake are great, and the cakes and muffins are also amazing! Thanks a lot!!
MoreHighly processed vegan food. No rawness, only chemicals, seed oils and pea proteins pumped into pretty shapes.
MoreI absolutely love this place! I’ve been coming since it was Pogo and I’ve always enjoyed their food and ethic. The place is full of the diversity of Hackney, reasonably priced as the portions are large! Staff are super friendly. Get down early for an epic Sunday breakfast, you won’t be disappointed!
MoreExceptional café with great food and drinks. I stopped going to Pogo about 10 years ago, because it turned into a hyper-political clique of hippy shambles... with terrible food to match (except their burger). Black Cat is what this space should be; polite staff, well-prepared food, and a strong animal rights ethics. Monday has a discounted menu, too.
MoreAbsolutely great. My favourite place to eat in London. Food is fantastic, portions are huge, lots of options, great vibe, great value, and great ethos.I always leave so full, and for half the price of anywhere else. The meals usually come with tonnes of salads and bits too. Really appreciate it.The kitchen and people that work there do an amazing job.
MoreAbsolutely outstanding food. I got the noodles and I was amazed by the quality and how well the flavours mixed together. The fishless bites were actually incredible and they do indexes taste like fish! The price is fair, especially if you considered how generous the portions.
MoreNice place with delicious food! The meals are quite big. We got the English breakfast and camembert sandwich and both were really good!
MoreFriendly and unpretentious, huge portions of food. I had the tofu burger with chunky chips cooked to perfection.
MoreLove this place. Delicious food with generous portions. Such a relaxed atmosphere. Want to eat everything off the menu!
MoreFood in this café is fresh, tasty and simply delicious. Portions are generous and ingredients clearly quality and fresh. We came here first about 4 years ago and there was a more extensive menu there and more traditional health vegan food so when yesterday we saw the smaller menu with what looked more liked the current trend for “dirty” fast vegan food I felt disappointed. When the food arrived those thoughts changed fast as there is nothing “fast” food about their sandwiches, salad and chips. I had the chick-pea tuna melt toastie and it was packed full of a delicious mix that was exactly like a tuna melt but not soggy, nor too full of mayo. Perfect texture, balance and seasoning. My husband had the Seitan deli sandwich and was equally delighted. Chips were lovely too.We visited on a Monday lunchtime and cafe was full. Great atmosphere and a trendy vibe. We’ll be back.
MoreLovely vegan cafe, the menu changes often but the food is always lovely! No alcohol, but they have hot beverages and soft drink.
MoreMy favourite vegan cafe in all of London. Been coming to this café for a number of years. The food is great value and high quality! I miss the book selection as they have had to reduce the non food section but some literature is available still. Check out the vintage Profane Existence zines while eating some delicious setain.
MoreHad my birthday brunch in Black Cat, I had the Caribbean style curry, it was nice, but wasnt very Caribbean except for the fried plantain that accompanied it. The portion sizes were HUGE, I dont think that any of us were able to finish the whole meal. Its in a strange place, you wouldnt really expect it.I will definitely go back.
MoreAwesome seitan toastie. Generous portions too! Very friendly place. They were happy for us to use laptops to get some admin sorted whilst we finished our drinks (mid week and restaurant not busy - we checked with staff they were happy before use).Would definitely recommend!
MoreHad a lovely "chicken" burger that was very flavoursome! Also a cappuccino, choc and PB milkshake and a choc and PB brownie, all really delicious! Would happily come back to support comrades making delicious food! 😀
MoreUsed to come here when it was the good old Pogo cafe, way before veganism became trendy. If memory serves correctly it used to be run by volounteers. Can not say that it has changed a lot. Overall a very good place to go but the reason for the 4 stars is that the service can a bit a bit hit and miss. Still worthy of a visit.
MoreBlack Cat Café is an incredible establishment. The food is so good here, and with such large portions.Located just a few minutes from Hackney Central and the Hackney Downs and with late hours for a café, its one of the best spots for a cosy afternoon that stretches into evening.Since reopening after lockdown, it now offers table service and the social distancing inside the restaurant is a great standard, with every other table marked to stay empty, giving you and your friends a reassuring distance from other diners.
MoreGreat value for money! The food is consistently delicious (if sometimes a bit saltyand the changing menus makes every visit exciting. The staff are always very friendly.I love coming here, and feel glad to support a co-operative that are committed to offering great vegan food.
MoreExcellent cafe. Lovely atmosphere. Ridiculously generous portion sizes.Love what these guys stand for and what theyre doing. Food has always been great here, the menu ranges from healthier options to veganised fast food. Really reasonably priced and always feel like theyve got their priorities right.
MoreWhat a great place! Some of the yummiest food Ive had in a while - and Im not even a vegan - using original ingredients and flavours. I love the place, too, very relaxed & welcoming atmosphere. Staff is super friendly. Cant wait to be able to hang out here again!
MoreExcellent vegan food. Fab salad bowl. Inexpensive sorbets. All good.
Probs one of my favorite brunch spots in London! This restaurant is all vegan so I love that I can get every thing on the menu. I always go for the fry up (they only serve this on weekends). It’s so delicious! I’m not usually a baked beans fan but I end up devouring the beans they use here. The tofu scramble is also seasoned well and I think they make their on mock meat! Which is cool. The potatoes are also nice and crispy. You can either choose to have a pancake or toast and I always go for a pancake! I feel like £9 is a reasonable price for all this vegan goodness in London! I’ve also had the curry here for dinner and it was also nice and filling! The cafe is located in a quiet part of hackney in the middle of a lot of houses, so it’s quite peaceful. They also have a variety of vegan baked goods at the front counter which look amazing!
MoreDeeelicious vegan food! Visited a few weeks ago and enjoyed my late lunch :a very relaxed and laid back atmosphere too. It’s maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing but the food makes up for it. The only negative was my boyfriend said his oat milk coffee didn’t taste great, but I’m more of a tea lover and so this wouldn’t put me off coming back to eat all the food... (and more tea ;)).
MoreNice cozy place. I liked the vegan food here. I hope they increase their options as having good number of options always make you feel hungrier!
MoreMy first time in a Vegan coffee shop and Im impressed! The staff is friendly and attentive. You can definitely feel good vibes in this place. Two thumbs up ladies!
MoreNice atmosphere, friendly staff with awareness to issues of food sensitivities. 100% solid vegan food
MoreCosy, friendly, tasty. Great ethics, workers cooperative, vegan, upholds values.Coffee not great but food really was. Filling, large portions and tasty. Been several times and I’m never disappointed. In the summer the windows open up and you can sit on a coffee bag in the window sill and chill. Relaxed vibe.
MoreFantastic. Airey atmosphere, engaging staff. Lovely friendly staff. Yummy vegan fare. And a workers co-op to boot ✊
MoreFood is absolutely flavourful, wholesome and delicious! Very hearty portions with quality ingredients, so it’s worth the price. Staff are friendly and helpful. Cosy, airy cafe yet professional. The kind of vegan cafe that makes it easier to eat healthy and lower one’s carbon footprint as their foods are tasty and addictive, and with the spacious, comfortable and communal style space they proffer.
MoreAmazingly beautifully prepared and presented dishes. Bright and colorful. Tasty, healthy. Really big portions.Excellent
MoreIt is safe to say I love this place! Its spacious, has great food and friendly staff. The pastries were good too, although the sausage roll was a little dry and could probably be better if heated up :)

MoreHad an excellent time and delicious food at the Black Cat Café. A straight forward and friendly feel to the place. It seemed like a lot of the other guests were regulars. Their peanut curry with rice felt home made in the best of ways. The espresso was adequate, but then Im very picky with my coffee
MoreLove this place. Food is tasty, portions are big and it was surprisingly cheap for what it was. This will become one of my fave places for vegan food.
MoreGreat atmosphere, very good quality food and big portion sizes! Highly recommended!!!
MoreWe travelled an hour from West London to visit this place as it was highly recommended! Gutted that the full English was sold out but was happy with the dishes we got instead! The seitan was well marinated and everything tasted great. The portion sizes were very filling too! Cant wait to travel back and try out more.
MoreCosy Vegan Cafe, one of the best vegan places I have ever been to. This cafe has a relaxed atmosphere with about 7 main dishes to choose from. We went for the beef burger and the lasagna. Both came with a fresh salad. Both dishes were extremely tasty and hearty. Have to say its probably the best burger I have ever had! Had a mango and raspberry pastry to follow. Was slightly dry but still great tasting. Loved this place. Will be back to try the breakfast soon.
MoreI visited on 18 Oct 2017, and ordered the beef style burger. There was an array of uncovered food on the counter that I had to speak over to place my order - is this a good time to mention that I had a stinking cold. There were little silver buckets on each of the tables, containing dirty crockery and THE most filthy salt dispenser that Ive ever seen. My coffee was just about warm. This place is a health hazard. You have been warned.
MoreAwesome little vegan cafe in Hackney. Definitely a hidden gem in East London.Staff and food were amazing! Whilst you wait you can also pick a book up to read and it can be related to vegan recipes or artistic stuff.I ordered the savory pancake with salad, black rice and potato salad. It was tasty! My friend who ordered the fishless and chips was also tasty. The vegan fish tasted almost like a fish with the texture and the looker like skin. They also have window seats they opens up completely so its cool when the summer arrives.Eventhough its self order service i would still give it 5 stars because the food and price is on point!
