Taking a caged bird on a stroll is one of the local elderly’s favourite pastime. You should visit this market if you want to know more about local culture, or just to see colourful, talking parrots. However, note that a lot of the beautiful birds are kept in really small, crowded cages, which is sad to see. :( Alert if you’re an animal activist.

This place is full of scammers. They sell sick birds to people and then blame the weather when the birds die. There are many reputable bird sellers in Hong Kong on Facebook groups, but stay away from here. Nearly all their birds die within a month. Mine died after only a week 😭

Its not that big now not many shops openPrice for birds has increased considerablyI brought a budgie from the first store grandpa last year to replace my old budgie that passed away was $280 HKD , yesterday I had to go buy another as my second old budgie passed away this time price was $580hkd wow big increase ,refused to bargain saying everything go up due to pandemic, I found another shop had some budgies most shops only have Finches, parrots and love birds.Lady owner quoted me $500 HKD for a budgie I told her I came from a long way and would love to buy one to keep my lonely budgie company, In the end I paid $450 plus a free bag of bird seeds .Hopefully when things get better, more shops re open and prices can drop down to a more realistic price . I had no choice I didnt want my bird to be lonely.

i got a bird two weeks ago happy that i found a little companion only for him to pass away yesterday.. now i know that this place is cruel and the cages are awfully small for birds. they’re sick and distressed. i hope some animal rescue centre rescues them. 💔

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of putting these little creatures in cages, so it was a bit of a pain to walk through the bird market. They have dozens of different varieties of small birds and parrots, some places in extremely small and crowded cages. We also saw a pair of beautiful Macaws chilling on a bird stand. For reference, they were priced at 26,000 HKD in Sep, 2021. Most stores don’t allow you to take pictures, so in case you’re planning to go there to grab some Insta-worthy shots of the beautiful birds, don’t even bother.

Must see in Hong Kong! So close to the flower market. Although I was sad to see some of the smaller birds in cages and so many grasshoppers etc..in bags and cages... being an animal lover💕 It was nice to see that some of the bigger birdies were in good condition and overall happy.A nice man with his amazon was there to greet us and his bird was quite talented, if I had more time I would have took a pictures with him on my shoulder.

Yuen Po Street Bird Garden (also known as Bird Marketis one of the most popular street markets in Hong Kong, offering great opportunity to experience some unique part of local life and culture.Bird Garden is a traditional Chinese-style garden or a market all about pet birds and songbirds. Besides, it is also a small oasis in this busy and hectic city surrounded by a cacophony of songbirds. The Yuen Po Bird Garden is actually a small lane, the traditional Moon Gate is at the start of this pedestrian alley. The Chinese had traditionally liked to keep birds as pets. Here you see the old men with their cages taking their birds for "walks" much like you would take your dog to the park.If you go early in the morning, you might get a chance to see them feeding the live crickets and grasshopers with chopsticks to their birds.Just a bit further in, you start seeing the market stands, it is a small area with only a few shops but what it lacks in size it more than makes up with the variety of birds, there is everything from delicate canaries to colorful parrots...

Better known as the Yuen Po Bird Garden, we found this place fascinating! This is actually a small lane, with the traditional Moon Gate at the start of this pedestrian alley. The Chinese have traditionally kept birds as pets. Here you see the old men with their cages taking their birds for "walks", much like you would walk your dog. They then hang the cages from the tree branches and, together with their fellow bird-owners, play card games or just simply have a chat. Stalls sell all merchandise for birds, including live crickets and grasshoppers. Sometimes you see owners feeding these to their birds with chopsticks. There is also an adjacent Flower Market and Goldfish Market but, for us, this market was the highlight!

Take a taxi around 4-5 PM to the bird market and walk your way down back to to the ferry : bird marker, flower market, eat dumplins at One Dim Sum, Gold Fish market (not really a market, more Gold Fish street), sneaker street, ladies market, walk down to Yaumatei Temple, check out the fortune tellers, some speak English, Temple Street market.Bird market by itself is small but interesting.

Some beautiful beards and exotic variety but if youre sensitive to the conditions of animals, I would not advise a visit. Not all animal are treated the same and have a lot of space to move around freely. Still and interesting experience all the same.

As an animal/bird lover this place is great to walk around & look or even take pictures of the birds(some owners dont let you take pictures & it is better for you to respect them). There are many different species of birds in here for sale. Not only that, they do sell anything & everything thats bird related; cages, perches, toys, bird food and such at reasonable prices. On the downside, however, as a bird lover, it just seems so cruel to me that a lot of the birds being sold are kept in cramped & overstocked cages. Its sad, really. Some of the budgies & cockatiels are sick but still kept in the same cage amongst the healthy looking ones. I wouldnt recommend purchasing, unless you take your bird right away to the vet & get it checked. However, the street is still nice to walk around in, with all the screeching, talking, chirping etc. I usually go here to get supplies for my birds.P.s. Do take a look at the flower market nearby as well, highly recommended!

I did not like ! Although lots of different colored birds. And although I never judge cultures. It seems very cruel to me to keep so many birds, most of them freedom birds, in very small cages.

Good place for bird supplies, live birds and such at reasonable prices. A lot of the birds being sold are kept in cramped, overstocked cages, some larger macaws/parrots are tied to their perch and talk to you. The street is nice to walk around in and look at the birds, the store owners are very passionate about their businesses. Not much appeal unless you are a bird owner/bird watcher.

Although I hated seeing all the caged birds it was a great place to see what the locals do. Not many tourists. Amazed to see the maggots, live flies and bugs on sale as treats for your pet birds. Huge variety of song birds. Worth a detour for. Great walk through the flower market too.

A popular haunt for songbird supporters, the visually engaging Yuen Po Street Bird Garden is designed in the style of a traditional Chinese garden. The park has dozens of stalls selling exotic birds, beautifully crafted bamboo cages, porcelain water dishes and other bird-care paraphernalia.

A shame such places still exist. Went there shortly before closing time- overcrowded bird cages were sorted into tiny narrow and nasty "ware houses" like any materialistic product. I wish an animal welfare organization would just simply prohibit this business. Hongkong´s live animal markets are simply a horror trip for people with ethical thinking and moral demands. They speak for Hongkong itself: A simple mess - besides the existence of modern skyscrapers you would not believe you´re entering the 1st world: Noisy, dirty, narrow, old-fashioned and wasted with garbage in its outskirts...

The market is quite cool and photogenic with a few lanes of sellers selling everything from the birds themselves to live bugs to feed them. If you feel quite strongly against caged animals I reccomend not visiting here as all the birds are caged. If you can stomach it then I highly recommend a look as it makes for an easy and interesting detour from the neighbouring flower market.

This was a charming, quaint location on a second floor park with outdoor bathrooms. There are indeed a lot of birds for sale but conditions were sad with significant cage overcrowding and depressed exotic parrots with clipped wings and chains. Many vendors are eager to sell the birds. If you are a bird owner, there are a lot of bird supplies for sale.

Authentic market, really small with stalls only to one side of the bird garden. On a sunny weekend day its lovely to see local residents bring their birds to socialize with others.. Not touristy, right beside the flower market.
