Bill's Place - Gastropub in Hancock, United States
The food was mediocre, at very best. The so-called Maryland Crab Soup tasted like Campbells tomato vegetable soup with a small amound of crab. However, it was the only place to eat on the bike trail for many miles. The atmosphere is authentic hillbilly red neck. (If you liked Deliverance, you will like this place). The owner was nasty. The barbeque potato chips are good however.
Great place to eat, not fancy, just good food and service!
Its an oasis right on the C&O. Beer to drink and to go! Food! Nice folks!
Awesome place! Cold beer and good food. Great service.
Nice place, good food and great owners, employees and customers! A very nice relaxed atmosphere.
Close to the bike trail, quiet place to park bikes across restaurant.Cash only, intake waitress was friendly, checkout person was not. Low food quality.
Best fried bologna sandwich ever, and just a really cool place. Must stop destination riding the trails through Little Orleans.
Its a first Sunday tradition during the rally
This place look like a local Hangout. My daughter went in to order cheese sticks, and said they were really nice. Anyone my daughter likes I like.
Great burger and beer. Stop in if you are biking by or at the camping near by.
Best Dive Bar ever. Excellent bar food at super cheap prices, and probably the coldest beers in Maryland!
Wonderful experience. Great burgers Cold beer!
CASH ONLY. First impression is this places primary business is being a bar. Entrance is right at the bar, and lights are turned down a little like a bar. Once you get past that then the place is fine. To the right were a few tables and chairs. Place was clean, staff was nice, service was good, and we liked the food. Nothing fancy, but good. For campers, there a small corner that is like a store that might have something you need. If I go camping at the nearby C&O site again, then I could see returning. Just have to make sure I have plenty of cash, since it is CASH ONLY.
Ive been hitting Bills for beer and a meal whenever i camp in Greenridge. Ive been going here since probably 86 or 87 Id guess. You have to understand that Bills is a local establishment first and welcoming to "outsiders" second. If you arent a "yuppie" that expects to be walking into a TGI Fridays youll be welcome. If you dont act or think youre better than them as you cruise down the trail on your $2000 bicycle, youll be welcome. The food is good (not vegan or gluten free or low callike from your grandmas kitchen and inexpensive. A basic beer selection but its cold and inexpensive. Manage your expectations, be respectful and you will be the new local. 👍 Bills loses 1 star for being cash only. I get it but come on is 2022 for Gods sake.
Bills Place is so worth the drive. The owners are very friendly and the locals are great. The food is a absolutely delicious. I had the homemade MD Crab Soup and fried bologna sandwich with Spicy mustard, it was on point. Ill definitely be going back to try a few other things. Thank you guys for a fun night out.
Good food, rustic atmosphere. The owner makes you feel like family. Wish I had taken pictures. You have to go to feel the great vibes there!
We stopped here while riding the GAP and C&O trail waiting for our shuttle to the local inn.Eclectic authentic Americana bar and store. Minimal menu and the all important cold beer.
Here’s the thing, you need to put Bill’s place in context. It’s the only restaurant/bar within at least 20 miles - the only business too. If you’re on the C&O, probably at least that to the next store/restaurant.This is the kind of local dive bar where everyone knows each other, so when you walk in, they will look at the door to see if they recognize you. The food is what you would expect. The $4 hamburger is better than fast food. The chicken salad sandwich is yummy. The bowl is crab soup is filling. Oh and for beer, it’s an excellent selection of pilsners, and I don’t mean from local breweries.Next time I camp at 15 mile creek, I look forward to going back to Bill’s!
Awsome place! Exceptional food and service! Vast knowledge of the Little Orleans area! Service on and off of the C & O Canal, and the Potomac river
One of the best places i visited while attending the EAST COAST STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY. fresh food for the best prices and during the rally there was live music outside.
Everyone - staff and local patrons were so great! I got hurt and was unable to finish riding on the C&O. I ended up spending a decent amount of time at Bills while waiting for a friend to come get me from Pgh and was lucky enough to be able to talk to the the staff - such kind, gracious people! I also got a chicken salad there - the grilled chicken was legit AND they used homegrown cherry tomatoes on it.... Glorious!!!!
Cold beer, good service, and wild patrons. A must stop when your riding at the Apple mountain rally.
Very nice place cold beer and they have about anything you need in there. Very friendly people! Highly recommend you to stop by.
It was a great place. The food was excellent and the people are friendly. My father and I are visiting from New Jersey and we plan on coming here repeatedly.
Loved this stop. Good food cold drinks. The pork chop sandwich and fried bologna sandwich will not disappoint. Plenty of parking. If your in an RV avoid the tunnel.
Not welcoming at all. Stopped on our bike ride on C and O trail, for a small bite and a beer before heading on to Hancock (from Cumberland). Staff was not at all friendly ( though sign said cyclists welcome)...we sure didnt feel it! Last time well stop there and we certainly wont encourage other cyclists to stop there either! 1 star was too many....too bad its one of the few places to stop on the Trail.
Very good deep fried chicken. Not spicy or salty. You can sprinkle salt on it yourself. My friends had burgers and said they were good. No cell phone reception. But reception is close by. One very large TV and a juke box with music choices of Grateful Dead, Country, and more. Comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff. A favorite stop for cyclists and motorcycle riders.
Great piece to stop after some time the river. Good beer and food for really good prices, nice friendly atmosphere.
This is an excellent and unique option for those riding the C&O who want food and drinks. Just know this is a bar/restaurant in a very, very small town so they kind of do what they want. Be polite, know your place, and you will enjoy it. Also, its cash only!
Stopped here twice on my round trip GAP/C&O towpath ride. Both experiences were about the same. Condescending staff, unfriendly atmosphere, and low quality food. The only plus was that it’s cheap. Both times I walked in, they looked at me like I had two heads and made me feel immediately unwelcome in their otherwise empty bar. Thought I’d give them the benefit of the doubt on my return trip (I was also starving), and that was a mistake. For this stretch of the towpath, I’d recommend just packing your lunch and skipping this place.
I’ve never felt more unwelcome then I did when we walked in today, the bartender was nasty and belligerent!! Should I add from a stool he sat on, didn’t even get up. He used profound language towards us before we sat down. If your not a local and or ride there on a bike you might as well keep going. Drove a distance to get there against others advise. (should of listenedwhen we pulled up we should of know it’s not a friendly place from the attitude of those sitting on the front deck. If your not local keep going!!
Locally owned and operated...BEST FRIED CHICKEN EVER!!! FORGET POPEYES and KFC! Wish I lived closer!! Great service..just a good ole home town spot! Canoe rentals and camp needs as well!
Just attempted to eat lunch at Bills - but the creep seated behind the cash register barked loudly at me, hollering that I had mud on me and that I better not sit down... Bills is located right on the C&O Canal trail - and it was a rainy day - and I had just ridden over 40 miles on my bike - so I wonder if this happens to every cyclist that tries to patronize this (emptyrestaurant. They are the only place serving food for miles around and apparently have all the business they need. Avoid at all costs!
Stopped by this place mid-afternoon 9/25/19 while riding the C&O Towpath and it appears to be permanently closed. Sign said the building was for sale and the door was padlocked. Think twice before counting on this for an essential stop on your trip.
Delicious and exactly what I needed! If you are camping or driving through they are perfect for a stop. The food was really great and offered better options than other places in the area. If Im ever through again Ill definitely be stopping there ( also a great beer selection with 1.50 cans on Thursday 😊😊😊)
Great place to grab a quick bite when biking the C&O and the Western Maryland Rail Trail!
“Gastropub” lol. This is a dive bar at best. We stopped here at around mile 45 of our C&O bikepacking trip. I had high hopes for this place but when we visited, there was some motorcycle meet up going on. Definitely felt unwelcomed and in the way stopping for some food here. Food was disappointing but better than another cliff bar from my pocket. Very much the only place to get a warm meal for miles on the C&O. Beggars can’t be choosers I guess.
Very cool bar nesstled in the Blue Ridge mountains. Simple & perfect with a food & drink menu thats the same...simple but good. A lot to do in the area from exploring Greenridge State Forest by car, mountain bike or foot, kayaking/swimming & camping are all right there. If you like exploring & finding great new places along the way this is one of the areas great hidden treasures & an excellent starting point for such an adventure.
Super friendly and affordable. Nice little snack shop inside. Decent selection of beer. 4/5 due to cash only.
Greatest group of people in the world. Cant wait to go back. The bikes were amazing, beer was cold, and the food hot. Loved it. If you get a chance stop by and get a cold one.
Stopped in while riding the C&O trail. The food was good and staff was friendly. Its kind of a mix of everything, part bar, part restaurant, and part corner store. So if you are riding or camping on the trail you can get some quick supplies from Bills.
Great place great people too. They know a lot about whats going on around the place, bikers, to bike riding on trailer to tubing and kyaking and canoes.Stop and check it out. Good food there and you feel at home like you know them. Its 50 plus years of history at Bills.
Bills place is the only restaurant in Little Orleans MD. It is right off of the C&O canal, so it is a must stop. The food there is decent and prices are great. They were very welcoming even though we were covered in mud from head to toe. We had the ribeye and crab cake sandwich and both were good. The fries cauliflower were awesome and it is a must try.
Tasty food, tasty beer, excellent company.
Bills places has been around for a long time, always been one of my favorite places to go. Its a one stop shop that has all your camping needs, plus its a bar, and restaurant.. Highly recommended
Really cool place !There is a bar and grill. Food is pretty good. You can rent canoes here and the C&O Canal is nearby.Lots of trails to hike and lots of dirt roads to explore.
Very unfriendly. We stopped to get a quick lunch and ice cream on our C&O bike trip and felt super unwelcome. On the plus side, they do have flushing bathrooms. Cash only.
Its the only place to eat or drink along a long stretch of the towpath but be aware of what it is. A cheap bar with cheap food filled with a mix a passers-through and locals. It will fill your basic needs but this out-of-towner wouldnt recommend being there past dark on a Saturday night. Still, nobody can say that it is a generic restaurant. You will remember it.
Stopped by this past July on a tour from Pitt to D.C. Bills is closed on Tuesdays which we didnt realize. We had an offer from the grown daughter to give us a lift into town. But the step-son opened briefly for a few minutes to grant us access to water, soda and snacks. My ride buddy & I didnt stay very long but were welcome.
stopped by a couple yrs ago on an early Sunday morning, place was locked up yet Bill was sweeping the floor, opened for me and i enjoyed a couple of hours of down home conversation and cooking.not 1 bit of racism as 1 viewer commented and i have a heavy accent.Bill explained the history of the area, his business and just good old chat.type of business we used to have in every town with great hospitality and pride.i highly recommend anyone to go enjoy Bills Place.
