Big Tikka - Indian restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand
Had the most amazing night there once again. The food is constantly outstanding, especially the butter chicken, honestly the best Ive ever had!! (Not sweet like most places). The staff there are so lovely and accommodating, especially Sathish, youre awesome! Thank you!!
Great restaurant! The waiter got my drink wrong but quickly changed after I pointed it out - huge props. The eye fillet steak was also well done - but still tasted great. Definitely a place to visit once.
Yeah really unsure about this place now. Must have changed ownerships. Had a table just wanting the norm vindaloo or butter chicken etc… they said they don’t sell that on the menu …. So we say we fine… so we asked what’s similar and the dude said nothing is the same so we were all confused af at this point. Totally just unhelpful to the fact that when we come to a curry house, we know what we want. Apparently this is all thrown out the window. and will add we were the only table there. I asked the girl for a half pint beer. Came back with a pint glass half full. We cracked up. Told her bars usually serve that in a half glass. But won’t be back again sorry. Never again. Ps. Spice… I asked for mild. Was bland af. Just sucked.
Hands down the best Indian food we have ever eaten. As there were four of us we shared a number of dishes and everything that came out of the kitchen tasted wonderful. Excellent service and atmosphere, this is a gem of a place in Takapuna. Highly recommend.
The staff there was AMAZING. Great and friendly service! I would definitely go there again!
Had food here with some friends to celebrate a birthday, had a great time.Food was great, theres a variety of choice to order across different regional specialties. 5/5Service was friendly and accommodating 5/5Price:a little bit on the expensive side, expect to pay around 35-40pp/55-60 with drinks, recommend to share curries and rice.
As a Brit I know Indian food and this didn’t disappoint.Dishes are beautifully crafted and deliciousWe shall return!
have been coming to big tikka for years, as it’s the best choice for indian food on the shore (maybe even in all of auckland). the burgeoning menu includes favourites like rogan josh and butter chicken, but also less common regional dishes (the curry in a loaf of bread was a memorable example).the food is consistently delicious, and the service is similarly superb. five stars all round!
Youll love this place from the moment you walk inside. Enjoy the quiet ambience and fantastic food. Their menu is varied and includes some wonderful dishes you might not have tried before, like the Malvani Kombdi Cafreal (a flavourful goan-style chicken curry). Their naan is also the best Ive tasted and always cooked to perfection: crispy on the outside with a fluffy centre. Do yourself a treat and try it out.
The food and service are always amazing, I love the peaceful atmosphere which makes it well worth dining in instead of just ordering it to take away.
The best indian restaurant Ive had the privilege of visiting. The food is authentic which may intimidate those unfamiliar, yet they help you choose what youre looking for in a graceful manner. Great relaxing atmosphere, ambience and music. We became regulars after the first visit.
From the moment we walked into to Big Tikka the lighting was great, the restaurant was warm & cosy & music was relaxing . We hadn’t been to Big Tikka.before. The food, service & ambience was fantastic. Due to staff shortages at the moment the chef even served part of our meal. Thank you for a great experience - we’ll definitely be back.
My favourite restaurant in New Zealand. The food is clean and beautiful, and the service is impeccable. I highly recommend this place for people who want to experience Indian cuisine that really stands out from the crowd.
THIS is Indian food! Fantastic food every time, beautifully presented - going back till we’ve tried all the curries. Each dish is so interesting! Professional, friendly service - feel taken care of. Cozy ambience. Order the chilli cheese naan - a MUST
Had some takeaways from here and would never go back. Some of the starters were nice, but that was about it.I ordered the Africa one and only 6 pieces of beef and it tasted watered down. For $29 including rice, I felt I got cheated as not much flavour and the portions were so small for the price
One of the best indians Ive had in auckland and Ive been to a few. Very different. I had the goat curry and wow totally amazing favours were very different to what I hhave had previously. Will be back again to try their veggie dishes.
Possibly the best Indian Restaurant in Auckland! The menu is original, authentic & well executed. Flavourful food with depth, great staff, great service & reasonable prices. If you like Indian food, don’t miss this restaurant.
Probably the best Indian restaurant in Auckland, no cap! Many restaurants have a habit of attaching the word Authentic on their cuisine without getting the flavours, the colors & the spices right! Whereas in reality they are far far away from being even remotely authentic. Big Tikka comes very close to achieving this. Their north and south indian curries are very flavoursome, the naans are well cooked and soft. They have surely done their homework and researched on their dishes, and it shows! For tourists or residents craving Indian food, this restaurant is highly recommended.
Service and portion has definitely improved!! The taste is/was great as always. I am guessing the owner(sdo review the comments and feedbacks provide to change/upgrade their service.
Great place for Indian food have been longing to eat such food.Have eaten Indian food all over New Zealand but this is the only place where you get the the exact Indian flavours in the food, fresh food and chicken was dam tender and soft at the end of day that is what you want
Went here for lunch, good menu, and the food was nice, full of flavour. Good staff and service. They could handle vegan and halal restrictions which is great.Going to be coming back here with others to try dinner experience.
Outstanding dinner experience from friendly team.Delicious food ,especially biryani and parotta were awesome. Definitely will recommend to our friends and family .
I ordered Malvani Kombadi today. I am originally from Malvan and I have never seen the Malvani Kombadi like this before. It is only Coconut Milk I can test. Are you guys trying to fool foreigners or Malvanis? Please do not defame Malvanis with serving testless food. Food is very pricey (I think you are concentrating on packaging rather than foods taste). You spoiled my dinner.
Delicious food and excellent service from friendly staff.
Initially ordered from here and the food wasnt good, however the staff were extremely kind and not only refunded our meals but gave me a free curry later in the week too try the new recipe- The new butter chicken was much better! 5 stars for customer service.
This restaurant was one of my favorite restaurants. We came to order takeaway during the lockdown, when we arrived home, I found the butter chicken was completely burned, and the side of the naan was burned too. Kodi illu was the only dish that I enjoyed tonight.overall: disappointed dining experience, be serious about cuisine, dont fool customers with burned food.
Amazing presentation, exquisite flavour, a pleasant and inviting atmosphere, and kind staff
Very good indian food and with good customer service. Mango matka kulfi was too good.
I really used to love Big Tikka and it was our go to Indian restaurant in Takapuna. ...until they completely changed their menu. They cut out a lot of vegetarian dishes, noticeably increased their prices - while cutting the portions in half! The size of their mains is ridiculously small now. The taste of the dishes has also suffered. We had a paneer dish and a simple vegetable one. The paneer one was super dry and had not enough sauce at all, the vegetable one tasted really off. Really disappointed .
Great service, attentive staf, the ambiance was inviting. Had prawns and fish for starters. Prawns were nice. Fish was a bit fishy for me. The stunner was the mains meal, I had the grilled salmon with this sauce with was so flavourful and rich. It was delicious. It came with ĺemon rice which was divine and a flaky paratha.
We came here on Friday night for an early dinner with my wife and 1 year old daughter. From the second we walked in till the second we walked out, the service was some of the best I have seen in NZ ! They were amazing with my daughter, playing with her, carry her, make her feel special it really really made our night. As im sure you are aware having an evening out with my wife and a 1 year old is never easy and thanks to these guys our evening was absolutely perfect. We did have to leave early but the food was delicious and we have takeaways for when baby goes to bed !!Thank you big Tikka for your warm welcoming atmosphere. 🙏
Great friendly service, those that make the difference. I had the chicken tikka masala, the nicest one I had in a long time. Will be returning for more!
Been this place first time after heard good review. Our experience was not great! Lets talk about the good thing, First we have ordered Starter Chilly Paneer and Aloo chilly both are the same style only difference was paneer andPotatoes. Taste was good which gave us high exception on Mains. But that was disaster. We have ordered two vege curry, both very very high price then normal Indian restaurant. We were sure this is called “high end fine indian dine” but the taste was not next to simple takeaway shops. The service was so slow as well. The ambience was good but we were more in to food and that was not up to the price and standard. Been to other high quality “price” indian restaurant but they are not even near to the taste. After meal, we have heard sorry from the lady who has served us but that was not fault to say sorry. I am really sorry to write this review but I have to because that cost money and time but in reward we got unstratified experience. Surely wont be going again. Thanks
It is not worth for the money. The size of the meals are too less for the price they charge. I had a chicken biryani from this place and the biriyani barely had some meat. I had also ordered a curry and it had less meat when compared to other Indian restaurants. I would not recommend anybody to go to this restaurant if they want a sumptuous meal for a reasonable price.
Nice ambiance, great service and decent food. Quick serving after order as well. Ordered 3 items and was quite satisfied with 2. The pahadi murg curry was recommended, but ended up to be a little bland for us.
Service = 4/5; Taste = 2/5; Value for money = 1/5; Menu options = 3/5; Vibe = 4/5; Hubby rating = 2/5Big Tikka is a pricey contemporary Indian restaurant in Takapuna. The atmosphere and decor is spectacular with an open kitchen, but the food and prices were a disappointment. Although the entrees were delicious, the curries were flavourless. To read my full review go to honestfoodiereview.com and follow @honest_foodie_nz
So good, amazing ambience, very attentive service, the food is always so incredible we all order different dishes each time and Ive got to say it Im wowed by them all. I have Indian roots and this is by far the best Indian cuisine I have had in NZ! I take all my friends here, clients and business partners appropriate for all occasions. Ive also been here with my three year old and the staff were amazing and accomating even when flat out busy!Seriously impressed.Worth every penny!Youre in for a treat!
[sorry for the messy plate photo]Ordered 2 starters- Chilly Paneer and Chicken Seekh kebab. 3 Mains- 2 Paneer dishes and 1 chicken tikka masala.Just overall presentation - 5/5 for all.Taste -Chilly Paneer starter - 5/5Chicken starter - 2/5 - it was too smelly and over powered with green cardamom flavour. You guys really need to rethink on that recipe.2 Paneer Mains - 2/5 - it was extremely tangy1 chicken main- 2/5 - again very tangy.Overall mains were very tangy... not only for me but for others too in my company. We ordered all different naan preparations. All were 5/5.We paid like $175 that includes drinks and food. Just if any curry dish is for $25- $32 , then I would expect it to be really really good. But it was really not all to the level I expected.Overall dine-in experience was good. But, the food was really disappointing!!!
Despite all current negative reviews decided to try as never been and place had been recommended in past. Having had many curries all over NZ and the world I can advise the following based on our experience. The Curry was indeed a much smaller than average portion and had only 2 small pieces of chicken in.....when questioned was told that is correct and new policy was only 125 grams per portion now.. but more like 50 grams! Not good enough sorry and happy to have paid a few more dollars if required to get normal portion. The taste of Chicken Tikka Masala was OK but noting great and probably worth no more than $10.00. They brought me another piece of meat some 20-25 mins later when nearly finished. Would have given just 1 Star but given 2 as Beer and Naan bread were superb. Maybe should just order these unless they start to listen to their long standing customers reviews who are not going anymore. Service was good and staff polite also. Wont go back as many other better options around.
We are out for tea with the father in law and he has taken us to this Indian in Takapuna. I have to say it is not often I rate an Indian as a five but each meal we had was very good. Recommend for I and Ian the food is not spicy hot but very tasty.Six months later and the food is still goos. I had the dry chilli chicken which is in fact very succulent. My partner has fish curry and eat everything.
We had a party here last month with about 25 people including loads of children. I have to say I had the best experience the food was amazing and serving was very fast. The place itself is beautiful with an amazing decor and felt very homely. The staff was super supportive and helped us arrange the tables and were very calm with the noise the children were making. I think if we were in another restaurant they might have thrown us outside but the staff here was super supportive. Hats off to the entire team for making me and my husbands party a success I will surely recommend everyone to visit!:)
Delicious food, although its a bit pricey for dinner. I normally come here for lunch sometimes, and its much more decent with a large portion of food. Love their cheese naan and butter chicken curry. Even my Indian colleagues agree that food is nice
Went to dine. We ordered paneer and garlic & cheese naan. Really nice food and service. Price is not too expensive. In dessert, Falooda was very nice. You can see the chefs making the food. Parking is in nearby streets.
Something special going on here! This is our family’s new favorite Indian Restaurant and we have frequented over 25 different ones in the Auckland region.Lucky Takapunians!
Its no my favorite food but I have to say that this visit fulfilled my expectations, the customer service was extraordinary and the food delicious.
Lunch special was awesome. Try the butter chicken and chili garlic naan (if you like spicy food)
We came here for lunch, good lunch promo! $13.50 for your choice of curry that comes with rice and Naan. Great for sharing!Delicious food but wished dishes were spicier and lesser on the sweet side.
Food was amazing, staff was good, could have been more energized and more friendly.. but overall it was a good experience
Its like entering passport control at an airport, no one smiled, or welcomed us when we arrived, we were shown our table and then left on our own. Once we discovered the menu (no one showed us where it waswe made our choices and ordered.I ordered the:LUCKNOWI BIRYANI (MEDIUM$20.50Choice of beef, lamb, prawn or freshvegetables slow cooked with basmatirice, mixed spices and coriander.I went for the vegetables option. When it arrived the plate seemed to be just rice and grated carrot with a few, and very small, heads of cauliflower and the occasional, like one, mushroom and a shaving of radish, with a few peas.I asked the manager over and checked I had the right dish, saying there wasnt any vegetables (I was expecting some nice steaming broccoli/cauliflower etcbut he said no this was correct, and then said "According to you there isnt any vegetables" when I asked what he meant he repeated this line and offered to get some more. When questioned whether I was getting some value (rice and grated carrot for $20.50he answered with his catch all phrase According to you.I declined on the offer of more vegetables, my friend asked for his to be made as a takeaway and we left. This was a wonderful experience of hospitality gone bad. However if you go just up a few doors they serve wonderful dumplings at Basu, and great friendly hospitality.
Looking for the perfect example of bad restaurant with extremely poor service and arrogant attitude. Look no further. Big Tikka wont disappoint you with their bad/tasteless food. Most, if not all, of their gravies are cooked using the same base sauce. So, it doesnt matter what varieties you are thinking to order, chances are very high all of them will taste exactly same(both veg and non-veg). We visited this place last week and order veg and non veg curries. All the three items that we ordered had very sour taste and full of tomatoes. On complaining no one bothered. So we ordered another chicken gravy hoping the second time it would be better. But guess what, again they brought the new curry with exactly similar taste to the other items despite knowing the reason why we ordered again. This time the argument was ``we use fresh tomatoes. Throughout the whole experience not for a moment we felt that they care for their customers. Overall worst Indian food in the town.
