Betty Maes in Huntsville
Description
Privilege
My family and I dined in. Usually the food is pretty good but today it wasn’t. I ordered a porkchop, macaroni, and cabbage. The porkchop had a lump in it, the cabbage was salty, and the macaroni taste like the box macaroni. We came from Tennessee and it wasn’t giving!
MoreWasn’t good like it was back when it was at the old location. The red velvet cake had the consistency of pie, the collards were chopped big and they were hard, the turkey leg was the best thing on the plate- good falling off the bone but the yams were also hard not even cooked all the way. A small cornbread muffin for all the food on the plate wasn’t even sufficient. It tasted like boxed jiffy mix. I try to support my fellow black business owners but this just was not good. It was not IT and I spent 31$ on two plates for me and my husband, sad to say Money wasted.
MoreWhew She Ready! Great taste on Smothered Turkey leg.
Went here for lunch with a friend. We had five plates to go. They forgot all of our bread and two plates were missing their second side. The catfish and chicken were very good. The greens, peach cobler, and beans all tasted awful and were clearly burnt. The food was not bad overall but definitely could be better.
MoreFood is always hot. Service is always friendly. Portions are generous
I’m from Cleveland oh someone told me that this was a good place to get Soulfood so I decided to try it. I drove all the way across town to get here walk in and be told “we close early today” it was 2:24 and the close time is posted as 3pm. We want to support our own but they make it so hard……the lack of professionalism is something I will never understand…..definitely won’t take this drive again.
MoreToday was the first day I visited Betty Mae’s since they moved to the new location and I have to say I was very disappointed. The mashed potatoes was dry and unseasoned and so was the pork chop and the lemon cake was chunky. I decided to eat in and the tables were dirty and hadn’t been cleaned. I will not be back!
MoreSoul food truly for the soul... Go to meal fried catfish, roll. yams, green and pound cake. Hint a drink comes with meal opt for another side. Promise you its good 👍
MoreAlthough the food has fallen off a bit it is still work the visit. Price still good. Fast service.
MorePhenomenal! Got the smothered turkey leg, collards, cabbage, and okra; ALL of it absolutely delicious.
MoreWe drove up from Florida and Googled Fried Chicken. Thank goodness this restaurant came up as number 1. WOW what great food! The fried chicken was akin to my mother’s! The best chicken we have ever had in a restaurant. And the green beans and Mac & Cheese were outstanding. Will definitely visit again on our next trip through Huntsville. You have a gem here!
MoreFood is for the Soul.. great spot.. can get a little crowded.. Food is Amazing
Food was good! Fish plates are really fish nuggets.
Okay but hear me out, I just ate here for the first time ever and I don’t usually leave reviews…but they deserve all the stars! Oh my heavens, Betty Maes, thank you :)The food was phenomenal. The staff was Hospitable. The daily special is a steal! Do yourself a favor and GO HERE NOW. RUN! Don’t walk. You can thank me later!!
MoreGreat food. The oxtails are hit or miss but everything else was very good
Fried Catfish is great! You want find better in Huntsville AL, and sides are like your in your Big MaMas kitchen. If your a Southerer strongly recommend you put it on your list of places to go.
MoreFriendly people especially the owner who is very personable. The food and the prices are grade A .. when I return to Huntsville I definitely patronize this business again.
MoreAwesome prices! The turkey leg was HUGE and delicious, well cooked. The okra side was also very well served. Three of us ate with 3 drinks and desserts for under $40 before tip and it was nice portion sizes. When people say traditional Southern food or Soul food, dont think greasy like I did, this was really well cooked and nothing was super oily. It was fried of course but fried well! I left without that heavy feeling you usually get when eating fried food, no bad reflux after either. The only negative is the older building, so be prepared for that if youre super picky about aesthetics, otherwise I am glad I trusted the girls at work and checked it out! (Kims and the Dark Side coffee shop next door are good spots as well, will definitely be back to all 3!)
MoreNo frills dining with a lot of friendly people.
Never had a bad piece of Fried Chicken here, even during pandemic times, this place delivered. Always enjoy having lunch here.
MoreMy meatloaf was like sloppy joe it was very wet the peach cobbler was burnt this my first time eating here and it was just bad I may give them another try one day but my cabbage and okra was good
MoreGood soul food served with a smile. Enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.
Fried catfish, fried okra, collard greens, and peach cobbler was all very good. Very casual atmosphere. Not recommended for a date though.
MoreNo long wait for food at all & very very good fried catfish fillet cornbread the 💣 love it all. Great customer service! Got my business weekly!
MoreExcellent Good but recent horrible hours. It is so refreshing to have seasoned food. It would be even better if you could get it on Saturdays. What restaurant is closed on the weekend?
MoreWasnt the hype I heard it to be and definitely could tell no one cleaned that day! Order to go chicken and dressing it was burnt the yams were runny and mushy...I got a spoon full of turnip greens didnt get my fried green tomatoes that I paid extra for...only thing I liked was the honeybun cake ...I dont see me going back for the food maybe the dessert
MoreI would give the fried food, potato salad, red velvet cake, and peach cobbler five stars. I also recommend the coleslaw & cornbread. Im not a huge fan of the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. That being said this is my go-to meat and three and one of my most favorite restaurants in Huntsville. She makes everything except for the rolls, lemon cake and maybe one other desert herself.
MoreNormally a great place to eat, I ordered mine to go, as I had groceries, ordered fried chicken, fried okra, cabbage and pound cake. When I got home, found I had fried pork chop, black eyed peas and green beans and peach cobbler. The pork chop was over cooked and too salty, the black eyed peas tasted like straight salt and the green beans were mush with a hot sauce flavor . The corn muffin was swimming in liquid. Very disappointing as its usually good. The young lady brought my order out to me without calling a number.
MoreI see all of these good reviews, will I guess I just caught them on a bad day. I went once and I will not be back. The food was so so. The staff was super friendly, loved them! The restaurant was not clean, I almost fell on the slippery floor. And I got sick after eating here. I really wanted to love this place, unfortunately I did not. Btw, the stars are for the staff, they chose them well!
MoreEating here will have your taste buds and soul connecting, and you will need a nap to recover. The food also leaves you full and wanting more. The staff here are amazing and friendly. 10 out 10 i would definitely eat here again.
MoreGreat people and great food. I had my first oxtails here years ago, and OMG!! Now, whenever Im back in town (especially on a Sunday for the oxtails), Im coming for a plate. The prices have increased since I was last there, but it was well past due. Ill pay with no problem. I wish I could bring them to Atlanta.
MoreHaven’t been here in years and the one day I come, they are out of everything. I get it and then I ordered chicken and dressing and wasn’t even told that’s not what they even have. The cash register went down. And, I’ve waited almost 2 hours for nothing! I get they are busy but, this was too much! To be fair they did offer a free meal. But, it just wasn’t a good impression.
MoreCant believe Ive never left Betty Maes a review. Ive been visiting since before they moved from their old location on Grace. The food is very, very good.Their new spot is on Memorial Parkway and definitely has more of a restaurant vibe than their old one. Its a clean and comfortable place where you order at the counter and pour your own drink (there are only four drink options, by the way: diabetes inducing sweet tea, lemonade, and Kool-Aid, along with unsweetened tea). To my knowledge, all food comes out in styrofoam containers. They offer changing meats from day to day, and a fairly diverse number of them, at that. Fried chicken is a mainstay, though, and Betty Maes competes with Gs for my pick of "best fried chicken in Huntsville." I would say that Gs is generally juicier, but Betty Maes tends to have more flavorful breading. Both are delicious; I think it just depends on what kind of experience you want and whatever your preference is on a given day.At any rate, I always go for white meat fried chicken. I tend to be given a breast and a whole wing with my meal. Plates run for about 11 bucks and you get a meat, two sides, a dessert, a roll or cornbread, and a small drink. Considering how loaded these plates are, its a good deal.Yesterday, I selected yams and macaroni and cheese as my sides. For my boyfriends plate, macaroni and cheese and fried okra. We both selected rolls, banana pudding, and sweet tea to complete our meals. Service was a touch surly on this visit, but the food came out quickly and kept extremely well on the drive home.Overall, the food lived up to how I remembered it. Delicious soul food thatll keep you full the whole day, no problem. Betty Maes is not afraid of salt, sugar, or pepper: this food is seasoned. One of the bigger pieces of yam was slightly overcooked, but the rest was perfectly soft and sweet. A word of warning: their sweet tea is a touch too sweet for me, and I love very sweet tea. Itll hurt your teeth! The banana pudding comes with an abundance of Nilla wafers, as it should.Definitely check out Betty Maes for some of the best soul food in the city. Dont be shy!
MoreNOT FOR VEGETARIANS/VEGANS: It took me a minute to track down a menu and Im glad I did before I went so Id know theres nothing to eat here for a vegetarian/vegan. Per the menu, all the vegetables are cooked with turkey so you cant even order a plate of sides. Really disappointing because I was looking forward to some good soul food.
MoreIve had the smothered pork chops, fried chicken,, and fried pork shop. All were really good. My favorite sides are the macncheese and fried okra. The greens are good too. Cant forget the cornbread. Grabbed me a.sweet tea to go with them every time. Friendly staff, quick paced during lunch time. There normally was a wait during lunch, but it was worth the wait.
MoreI have a love hate relationship. I love the food and the price its very few places you can get a meat , two sides , bread, dessert and drink for ,$10. The fried chicken is delicious so are the greens and red velvet cake. It is hard to get a call in though , then they can be rude and your order isnt correct.
MoreHungry? This place will give enough food for lunch and dinner from ONE ORDER. Delicious soul food and huge portions, served fresh. The red velvet cake is moist and delicious. I’ve tried places around Huntsville, and Betty Mae’s is, HANDS DOWN, the BEST in Huntsville.
MoreThis is simply a charming place to eat. Its a little hole in the wall. But it is a spot for that "home cooked meal" type of dining.I recommend going for lunch when they do a meat plus two side dishes for $9. You cant go wrong with either their fried chicken or fried catfish. The fried okra is pretty solid as well.If youre in Huntsville, I suggest giving the place a try. It will be worth your time.
MoreFried chicken, mashed potatoes and fried okra are out of this world. Dont forget the cookie pudding!
MoreMy mom and I had a great meal here today. We went to a doctor’s appointment in Huntsville and this was a great little Yelp find on the way home. We had smothered pork chops, mashed potatoes, rice, smothered chicken, collard greens, green beans, cornbread and more! The collard greens were 10x too salty, ( and the staff asked us 5 times if everything was okbut i had so much food that it didn’t matter! The staff were great and the food and prices were perfect! We aren’t close by here very often, but when we are, we will be back!
MoreBest catfish ever!! If your looking for real food, this place is it. Home cooking just like my Mom and Grandmother use to make. The catfish, fried chicken, fried okra, mash potatoes with real chicken gravy, everything was spot on. Staff was very friendly and the place was very clean. I have a very, very short list of my favorite places to eat and Betty Maes is one of them. I honestly think I could eat there every night and never get tired of anything. I was so stuff that I couldn’t even eat my peach cobbler. Go enjoy, you won’t be sorry. Oh and make sure you wear your stretchy pants, lol.
MoreHands down the best soul food Ive ever had in my life! This catfish will melt in your mouth. The okra is fresh and crispy! It is one of the best meals in Huntsville! A full meat and two with dessert and a drink! Its a big deal people!! Go there!
MoreGood Place to go for southern style cooking. It was my first time going. The lines were long but worth the wait. With your meal you get a meat, two sides, roll, dessert and a drink - very reasonably priced. I would go back again for sure.
MoreSo good!! I was visiting on vacation and I wish I could eat their food back home. Their catfish is beyond delicious and the neck bones were just as good! I was craving catfish so much since my great grandmother last made it back in the day and it was perfect. Friendly staff and fast service, highly recommended.
MoreMy first visit was on a Sunday at 1pm so they were super busy. They handled the throng of people quickly and professionally. Its delicious soul food. If you dont like a little extra salt in your food or extra sugar in your sweet tea, dont go. They have some of the best fried chicken in North Alabama and their peach cobbler is too be coveted. Portions are large so you definitely wont leave hungry. Weekday daily specials are only $10 which includes dessert and drink. We will be taking visitors here in the future.
MoreI want to give it 5 stars. I was really excited, based on the reviews. But it was salty. The catfish was perfect, except for the excessive salt. My husbands roast was salty enough he couldnt finish it. Funny thing is, Im someone who always adds extra salt to my food. But I had to agree with the rest of the family this time. The sides, other than the flavor of salt, were bland. The lemon cake was good. And the fried chicken was good. The people were really nice.
MoreWasnt bad but not very memorable. Great service and portion size. Loved the koolaid. Give it a try.
MoreThe food was awesome. I had the fried pork chop with mac n cheese. Both reminded me of home.
MoreOmg this food was amazing..... we got he chicken and dressing, Mac and cheese, cabbage, county fried steak, and green beans was phenomenal. The lady there was very helpful. I’m not from Alabama just visiting.
MoreOne of the best Southern/Soulfood places around. Just like Momma used to make back in the day. This food is delish. The country fried steak, macn cheese, & turnip greens are the bomb.
