Remains of a sprawling 13th-century fortress that once housed 20 churches & a mosque.
An incredible collection of old (13th-16th centurychurches, with beautiful architecture and frescoes! But the culture of the village isnt at all snobby, but is generous and warm. We stayed in Berati Castle Hotel and ate in Onufri restaurant. In both places, we really appreciated the politeness and warmth of our hosts, their buildings and services. Exceptional.
You can conquer it on foot or by car. A short walk past the castle and the ruins of the mosque will take you to the viewpoint, where you will have an amazing view! Be sure to treat yourself with a glass of fresh pomegranate.
Very nice view, also a nice walk!
its a nice place, the prices go up a little bit because its a tourist place.
Visited September 2022. Amazing castle ruins and free to explore. Wonderful views from the viewpoint. We didnt stop for a drink but there are lots of cafes at the top.
City View was super amazing from the top of berat castle, its 20 minutes walk from Gorica bridge. The track towards the top is steep & if you are short on time, use a taxi & it will charge you about 500 leke. However, getting a cab near the gorica bridge is a little tricky.
Family visit with kids, nice town, well worth the visit. We would return again as there are still things we didnt see. Nice cuisine, good prices, kind people.
A steep climb to get to but worth it, great views, great atmosphere, the citadel is a living town with small walkways, restaurants and open houses offering local drinks, food and hospitality. Beautiful place and no areas out of reach. A must...
Magnificent landscapes, historical buildings, local cuisine.
Amazing views and worth an hour or 2 to explore the town that live in the castle walls. Best at sunset
Very atentic old church. Must to visit.Old icons. Amazing.
A very beautiful castle.A lot of sightseeing parts to offer.Recommend it!
A must visit castle in Albania!Big enough,it offers you different checkpoints inside of it.Also you have museum, some churches and bars and restaurants too.We went there at the last week of the month, so we didn’t pay nothing at the entrance. One of my favorite places to visit was the water cistern. Recommend it.
A nice place to visit with an amazing view over the city.
Beautiful castle. Relatively untouched and fun to walk around. Loved seeing the locals still living in/around the castle itself.Lots of rubbish lets it down. And the water cistern is something else...
Easily accessible by car, parking right nearby, astonishing view, really admired the pavements and the walls as well the local houses inside. Small and coquettes restaurants inside with authentic cuisine. Dogs allowed, pet friendly!
There is so much to explore in the castle, a person can wander its alleyways and climb its walls for a whole day and still discover more hidden corners the next day. The views from every angle are worthy of a postcard.
Beautiful views of the sunset over the church and the valley
Its amazing that people still lives around the castle and you can find a lot of restaurant and shops in the castle streets. i recommend watching the sunset from there. Admission is free.
One of the biggest castle in Albania and the one where still live people. Not very organizzed. we visited it on sunday without ticket. you can see all over the city.
super beautiful place, very historic and full of of traditional corners. there is a small village inside the castle, full of restaurants and hotels. the panoramic view point is amazing.
The ruins of the castle are free to enter and there are some caffes around. Definetly a go to spot for spectacular views of Berat and the history preserved within theese ancient walls. It was fun exploring the old streets. There is free parking next to the castle gates but the climb there by car is Very steep if you access it from the river side. It is also accessible form the north. Go explore!
You can park right in front of castle gate. Entrance fee was not required when i visit.
Very interesting castle,With a birds eye view of the city.A few old churches.
A must visit place in Berat. The views form the wals are breathtaking and the old structure give a unique atmosphere. We climbed to the castle from the steep route starting from a staircase between the two bridges and passing through the st. Michael church (a nice place to stop for catching breath). I recommend taking this rout afternoon when the clif is already mostly in the shade.
You can easily get there by car or walk, besides the castle, can have an view of the town Berat and the mountains at coast.
When you visit the castle be sure to walk around the cobblestone stoned streets to meet the locals. Ive included a few photos a beautiful lady who spends her days knitting baby clothes. She is very welcoming and in need of our support
Incredible historic place that is still inhabitated. I highly recommend it! The people are really nice. I suggest you take a tour with Toni, the local guide, to find more about this wonderful citadel and to visit the churches inside. I want to come back to Berat after a wonderful experience here.
It is not only castle but there is whole small village there. Lot of restaurants, small gift shops and beautiful view on the old and new parts of city. You can go up by car or walk. Entrance and parking is free. Dont miss this place in Berat.
Its a very steep walk up but worth going all the way even its just for the view
Very interesant remains of a huge medieval castle (many hectar surface!!). There are still permanent 200 inhabitants inside, beside hotels and shopping places. The ruins start from Roman era and continues thru otoman occupation till modern times.
The castle is nice but it lacks further maintenance and restoration. The entrance fee is 400 lek which i dont think is little (many castles are in better shape in Italy and with free entrance). The view of the city and the old town from the top its what you pay for.
Beautiful day to pass on this city! I recommend taking a water bottle with yourself as you will get really thirsty walking around the castle! In other words, a trip on this city with your accompanies is a very good choice, because you have many things to see!👌🤙
Access to the castle is unrestricted, you can walk around really freely. There are bars, restaurants and souvenir shops at the top. Also there are some guesthouses. The walk up to the castle is a difficult one, there’s is parking at the top so if you have access to a car it might be wise to drive up.
Berat CastleDay 8-08Unless you have a local tour guide to tell you the history of the castle, it is just another castle. The castle is also an enclosure for the citizens and the king of early days. The climb to the top is not for anyone who have lazy feet. The slope is steep and made with large stones, which have been "polished" by years of travellers. The view on the top is awesome and priceless, worth every ounce / gm of energy dissipated._________________________________The entrance to the castle is a large gate built on giant rocks. It is an unusual castle because there are still inhabitants within whose lives are entirely different from the city of Berat. There are ten of the thirty-five churches left. Along the castle walls a big square is the bust of Constantine the Great, the Roman Emperor, who was considered a protector of Christianity. The water cistern is interesting. The water used to come from higher altitude, which in turn channel to other parts of the city.
Such an amazing place to go, if you visit Berat, the Castle is a must
Berat Castle (Albanian: Kalaja e Beratit), also referred to as the Citadel of Berat and castle quarter, is a fortress overlooking the town of Berat, Albania. It dates mainly from the 13th century and contains many Byzantine churches in the area and Ottoman mosques.[1] It is built on a rocky hill on the left bank of the river Osum and is accessible only from the south. It is situated at an elevation of 214 metres. Wikipedia
A most when in Albania! Definitely a city you have to visit, is super beautiful, you can find good food and friendly people
Huge castle walls with ruins and Old Town inside! Some great views down to the city that are on top and just below the castle walls.
Beautiful ancient place. Nice for calm walking, seeing landscapes and feeling the atmosphere of old Albania. Best time to visit is sunset
Impressive castle, impressive views. Beautiful buildings and homes within the walls. Nice to sit and enjoy a coffee and take in the ambience. I didnt eat there but was told by a local the restaurants do good home food.
Fantastic old city with amazing architecture, great historic castle on top of the city, with lot of Orthodox church
Entrance is paid but I dont understand for what I was paying for. For 300 ALL you receive couple, mostly broken or faded tables with basic description of churches, chapels and mosques. All of these are either closed or dirty and stinky as used for toilet. Streets surroundings are mostly neglected, falling apart or covered with trash. Castle area is more like a street market combined with restaurants than interesting historical place. It is only worth to visit to feel how life inside of castle walls could look like.
Beautiful place. The entrance fee is 400 leke, and for that you get to see a small castle town, where people still live. The houses are very nice, as our guide told us, local people go to Italy to earn money and renovate their houses here. In some places you can even see how people live, some families invite you in. The castle is full of old tiny churches, there used to be 24 Orthodox churches and 2 mosques here, only 8 Orthodox churches left. You can also visit the icon museum here. Stunning views of the town from the scenic looking viewpoint.
The Castle of Berat is absolutely worth the visit. We went especially for the Castle to Berat! It is one of the biggest Castles that I have ever visited, and will take you at least 2-3 hours if you want to see everything. The price of the ticket was 300 LEK ( 2.5€ ). You can either climb or go by car up to the main enterance of the castle and park outside of it.The City of Berat is part of UNESCO and very very rich of history.Take the time and visit it, you will not regret it.Fun fact: It is the only castle in Albania that is still inhabited.
Castle is smaller than expected. Only on one side has a 300lek entry fee but the pedestrian entrances are free...?? Its a really nice blend of old and currently existing. Wish some of the Orthodox churches in there got some more attention. Good views of the city and nice winding streets through occupied and unoccupied houses.
There are 2 ways to get in but I recommend the official one. You can go up to the castle with a car but the way is steep so keep that in mind. Parking is free. The entry ticket costs like 300 lek but its worth it. Group discount available from 13 people I think. Optional to ask for a guide but I recommend it. The scenery is stunning and the place is very interesting. Our guide Tony was well spoken and showed us the most interesting places. I really loved it. You can really see the city from up there.
Now, in June there arent many tourist. This is very beautiful castle town. Entrance for children is free, for adults 300 lek. We find parking in down town, near river. Way to castle is built of stone blocks, and street are very slippery and steeply. You must be careful. There are almost 1-2km to entrance. You can go to entrance with car, but only 2 cars were there. It is very slippery. When you entrance, there are many homes, restaurants, bars. But nowhere toilet. The views are unforgettable and unreal. If you are in Albania you must stop here to see this piece of history. Many places in castle are ruins and dirty. It is unreal to walk around the castle town , where people lives many centuries ago, and where people still live. This town castle is live.
The castle area is super huge and just amazing! Entrance fee is 3€ but of you are a group of 4 and more than only 2€ per person. There is a few coffee shops with terraces and some souvenir shops, prices like everywhere not higher. U can walk around the castle everywhere u want to. The view from every corner is just outstanding. Visited on June and it was not a lot of people so I can feel comfortable. Would definitely recommend to visit.
A living castle! Great place to spend a night in a hotel, have a dinner in the rose garden and a morning coffee in a shade of a crooked ancient street.Best time for walks - after the sunset.
