Bellwether Wines - Winery in Penola, Australia
Great place to taste wine and then drink the said wine around the the bush camp.
We visited Bellwether last year and loved the shearing shed cellar door, the wines, the garden and the ethos of the place. Then we saw the glamping tents and knew that we had to come stay. The tents are really comfortable. Not powered but they provide lanterns, little gas heaters and hot water bottles. You can charge things in the bathrooms and cellar door. Breakfast is provided each morning - house made bread and fresh eggs and you can help yourself to the produce in the garden. We also ordered a camp oven which was partly cooked and then we finished it off over the fire in the camp kitchen that they left blazing for us. The camp kitchen is fully stocked with everything that youll need - microwave, kettle, fridge, toaster, gas stove and oven, bbq and the fire. The toilets and showers are clean and plentiful and there us even a claw foot bath. There is a toilet and shower with wheelchair access. The surroundings are gorgeous. Every evening the sheep come and graze around the tents! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have recommended it to others.
Staff are great. Dog friendly camping. Camp kitchen is excellent
What a fantastic place to bring the family when traveling, we spent two nights here and enjoyed it thoroughly, our kids had the best time with the farm animals, great facilities and one of the best camp kitchens. Friendly and helpful staff, my wife even took a soak in the claw foot bath!!!
Such an awesome experience! Great range of wines, different varietals and a couple of cows to feed which was an awesome added bonus! Plus a doggo that loves lots of pats โบ๏ธ

Sue and her team could not have been more welcoming and generous. A group of friends camped (some glampedand we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Quirky well equipped camp kitchen. Great communal camp fire areas and a huge amount of privacy between camp sites made for a comfortable stay. Not to mention spotless clean bathrooms. Great wines, excellent food and a really great experience. We will return.
We went there for the brunch and it far exceeded our expectations. The food was delicious and the atmosphere coupled with the service made for a really special brunch. They were also super accommodating to our pup who enjoyed lots of attention! Will definitely be back next time we are this direction and will be recommending to friends and family. Thank you
Really disappointed
Wine was exceptional, service was even better
Amazing staff, would highly recommend and definitely will be back!
Great winery. Fantastic old shearing shed and surrounding area . Glamping and camping available. Great people who know their wines.
The wine tasting experience in Bell Wether when we went ticked boxes well.I recommend people to go there when the day doesnโt get too busy like what we did as the place doesnโt have big indoor space like Wynns and Rymill. We visited Bellwether the weekend before long weekend (Queenโs birthdayand there was a pouring rain in the region in the early winter. The perk of rain was that we almost had entire place for ourselves besides staff. Btw, a cold weather outside made the visit even better as the rustic interior design and burning fire made us all feel welcomed immensely.Their wines are quite a mix as they got their grapes not only from Coonawarra but also from other regions in SA for a fun twist of this little place. If you got bored for Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz for this region, try this place for a change. For me, wine tasting is an interactive experience rather than an expert-panel judging, although decent wines are essential. Thanks for Kyra making the experience interactive. She even gave me a small behind-scene peek and a souvenir card to keep. What an amazing experience!Btw, the outdoor environment is also incredible and I probably will come back to stay in the famous tent for 1 or 2 nights.
Exceptional experience for our wedding anniversary. We had every meal catered for all weekend, so all we had to do was relax and enjoy ourselves. The artisanal wine is also a stand out, with love and precision clearly exhibited in every sip.The degustation dinner experience was also a stand out with chef Kirby Shearing crafting simple but elegant meals and Sue matching the wines to complete each course beautifully.Looking forward to doing it all again ASAP!
Had to visit a relly who worked their.Lovely setting & great to see the wine making process around the seated areas.Love to return to try the food & have more tasting of the wines.
Fantastic time at Bellwether - Sue, Kyra and young work experience fella (Bobbytook great care of us. Camping experience is top notch and the wines delicious, weโll be back. Thanks
beautiful building, lovely wine
Lovely hosts.. beautiful wines and lively location..close to the other wineries too.
This was such an amazing experience. The tasting is hosted in a former 1860s shearing station with lots of character and great touches. Whilst enjoying the great wines by Sue, you may be able to see the chef preparing from scratch from local ingredients all the dishes served for the overnight guests .The wines are quite unique and do not necessarily follow the expectations of the region, which is refreshing. The wines range from well done to absolutely fantastic and the tasting experience is also one step up from most wineries (thank you, Rachel!!).Everyone was lovely and the setup is simply great. We will be back to stay at Bellwether and dine/drink there. An absolute must stop in the region. Call in advance to book a tasting, as it is not a well-kept secret that Bellwether wines are fantastic.
Lovely wines, some different varieties and super awesome staff.
Quirky, interesting, nice wines an absolute must visit when in the Coonawarra
Loved it, was a miserable rainy day, but the hospitality, the warm fire, beautiful antipasto and wines made us forget the weather outside.......an awesome addition for us with young children was the "holding" yard set up as a play area!!!! Let us sit and indulge!
We had a great afternoon here. Great wine, food and friendly service. Amazing spot for the kids to run around with a tree house, swing and animals. Definately worth the stop!
Nice bush camping setting
We had the most amazing time here. Donโt drive past pull in and stay the night & have a ๐ with a glass of wineOur kids wanted to stay another night. โบ๏ธ
Wonderful winery with a wide range of wines on tasting. The camping/ glamping facilities are stunning with powered and unpowered options available. Staff welcoming and friendly.
Would highly recommend this place for a visit.Kate was so informative during our wine tasting. She was lovely enough to give us a tour around and give us a brief history of the old shearing sheds ..Great experience and a must.
Unique little cellar door with lots of good wines.
We had a simply wonderful long weekend glamping at Bellwether winery. Sue is an absolute force of nature and an amazing host. The camp kitchen has everything you need (once you find it !), the fresh eggs and homemade bread each morning are a delight and the gorgeous highland cows, Mabel and Lolly the dogs, sheep and birds everywhere made our stay - as if we were as one with nature. The tent is warm but comes with a portable gas heater just in case - we just sat by the campfire each night and crashed. Loved it and highly recommend it for camping friendly folk
Called in last weekend and the hosts could not be any kinder. Wines where great, everything was explained about the wines in the region. When passing by, dont go passed stop in and enjoy. Also glamping. Well done girls, you have done an awesome job. Thanks sheree
Great wines and a stunning location. Special thanks to the young woman who welcomed us, presented the wines and showed us around. Thanks to the beautiful dogs as well !
Brilliant few days and nights spent at Bellwether. So comfortable and welcoming. We had fun foraging in the kitchen garden for meals cooked in the outdoor kitchen. The glamping tents were impressive and so comfortable. very family friendly.
We visited Bellwether over Easter and we are lucky to have found it. The staff were welcoming and the wines are unpretentious, reasonably priced and delicious. This is a hidden gem.
We arrived just in time to enjoy a tasting ran by Sue the owner and winemaker. The wine was fantastic with varieties from all over the country. The rose was a real stand out.We camped there too. The facilities were great with a proper camp kitchen and good bathrooms.
Such a friendly place! We were lucky enough to be given a sneak peek behind the scenes of this beautiful cellar door. Our wine tasting was relaxed lots of fun. A passionate team, a wonderful location, a definite "must-visit" when in the Coonawarra.
We camped here over the Easter holidays and had the most amazing experience. Beautiful camp grounds with great space and very good facilities plus there are farm animals to delight the kids. Sue and her team are wonderful and warm and are the best thing about Bellwether. Camping - Cellar Door - Farm, what a brilliant combination! Thank you for an excellent stay and we will definitely be coming again.
Great place!
What an amazing experience. The highlight of our stay had to be enjoying the first 2 courses of dinner out in the vege garden. The tents are great very comfortable and warm on a cold night. Cooking breakfast in the camp kitchen with the fresh eggs and produce was a great way to end the experience.
Lovely stay here over new year in a glamping tent in the paddock behind the winery. Didnt get to enjoy one of the hammocks in the trees this time but have marked it down as a must for next time.In comparison to some of the bigger, flashier wineries in the area, this feels like a local secret, one youd only hear about from a good friend that really knows great food and wine.
Great wines and beautiful surrounds. They offer glamping as well as powered and unpowered camping. Magnificent setting and a great getaway.
Came here for a wine tasting and ended up staying for one of the best degustations I ever had.Sue knows how to make exceptional wine and Kirby creates magic in the kitchen. Will definitely be coming back next time Im in the area.
You should not miss this winery! The wines are beautiful.
