If its a really hot day the mine tour is a great place to explore and cool down at the same time. The mine stays at a constant 10 degrees Celsius year round.
Impressive place. Nice tour of the mine.
Nice place it has lots of mines underneath and the mine tour was the highlight of the place😍 Must visit place if youre planning for bell Island trip
I must see for everyone visiting Bell Island. The mines are the heart and the soul of this island and the mine tour should not be missed.
We were so glad we took this tour today (Sept. 4/2022The guide was very good at explaining the conditions in the mine for generations, her father having worked there until he was injured and lost a lower limb. It’s eye opening. The minors had no easy task and worked under extremely hard conditions. Such an interesting and informative tour, we would recommend this tour to anyone who visits Bell Island.
Exploring the mine was indeed a unique experience! Must visit attraction at bell island! Recommend it.
My husband and I visited the mine on August 27/22 and it was a truly amazing tour, our guide Geraldine was awesome, it’s very sad to know how many lives were lost and with the little ones attending to the horses, it has given me an appreciation for life knowing what those miners had to work in, what we go through in our workplace is nothing compared to them.
Brian was the best guide on this tour a must see if visiting NL
Amazing, Dad could go down but the museum was fascinating
Tour was great, listening to my parents talk about my poppy (Freeman Penneyand great grandfather, (Samuel Penneywho both worked in the mines. Was also shocking that the tour guid knew my grandfather (Poppyand share some stories of them at the Old Newfie club in Cambridge Ontario.
Very informative and interesting tour with a nice museum, Geraldine knows her stuff and was delightful with our group
Our guide For was awesome. The tour is a must thing todo
Really enjoyed the museum and mine tour. Highly recommended. Must do when visiting Bell Island 👍
Very COOL mine tour, highly recommend it. Lots of history to be learned!
We enjoyed the short ferry ride to Bell Island to see this very interesting museum. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and gave us loads of information about the mine, the workers and their lives back then. Well worth the visit.
Lots of information in this small museum!
Bernie was an amazing tour guide. Funny and full of knowledge. The mines brought you back in time and were amazing to see.
Bernie was a fantastic tour guide, and I had so much fun touring the mines. A dont-miss if youre in the area!
Glad to have crossed it off the bucket list! So much history to take in and its quite surprising. The tour was well done and interactive. Our guide Fox was funny, well put together and knowledgeable. Made sure we had a good experience! Highly recommend visiting if you get the chance
Mine tour. Great experience. A must visit if you enjoy Historical tours. Tour guides. 1.3 hours. Very enjoyable.
What a great place to visit. So much to be thankful for. The staff are fantastic. Today we had Geraldine as a guide, she was phenomenal. Personal ties and a lot of factual information about the procedures and processes that went on to create such a marvel for that time. Early 1900’s to 1966 was a very different time and the men and the children worked long, hard days. Tony and the other amazing horses were an indispensable part of the history too. This was my 6th mine tour, I’ve dove it 5 times also. Very cool place. A must for all.
I loved visiting the Bell museum. We got to go down in the mine and get a tour. The tour was amazing! It was informative, hands on, fun and the guide personalized it! I cant recommend it enough. Also, they serve the best coffee!!
Impressive site with lots of stories. A necessary stop on Bell island.
Really neat tour! Our guide Geraldine was awesome! Highly recommend. Tour is about an hour long, we did it with small kids and it was a good experience.
Great tour. Lots of info, cool sights and a great guide.
A look at the history of mining in Newfoundland on Bell Island. Tour included a walk through one of the mines that was shut down in the 60s and then reopened. Ferry across to Bell Island is very inexpensive. Highly recommended.
Very interesting place. A reminder of of one of the really important places in Newfoundland industrial history. Guides provide insights into the hardships faced by some of our ancestors.Too bad the Federal & Provincial Tourism departments dont see the importance. Much of the funding for the site seems to have been delegated to the local residents.
A beautiful island to visit and if there the mine tour is a must see. Some really good history of the island and the 71 years of iron ore mining that took place. Some of the history involves WWII, a surprise. And you get to visit the mine for about an hour. It is 6 degrees C so bring a jacket. Geraldine was our fabulous tour guide!
If you are going to Bell Island, GO ON THIS TOUR. Truly an incredible, humbling experience. It blew my mind to see the conditions that these men used to work in. Our tour guide Geraldine had a personal connection with the mine, and shared a touching story about her dad. When we walked in, my fiancée saw a picture of her great grandfather on the wall. Beautiful place, worth every penny.
A very cool place to explore and it was made even better by our tour guide Geraldine! I really liked how personal the mine is to her and her family. We felt very welcomed and learned a lot!
Unexpectedly excellent tour and even better because it was in an underground mine and our guide was so passionate about it. We loved how he described what it was like to work here and how important the iron ore was in world history. World class.
Awesome tour....just started back up a week ago Brian was awesome...lots of good stories... dont miss it!
The guide was very knowledgable and shared personal stories of the place related to his family.
Thanks Brian for an awesome tour! What an interesting spot.
The museum is amazing as is the mine tour. Bonnie did an amazing job on our tour
The best tour of my trip to NL. Our tour guide Brian has a lot of interesting stories! I would recommend this museum to everyone.
Very informative, different and was more interesting than I expected. Its an old mine, most of which is submerged under water, but you see quite a bit and learn the history and hard work that went into it. Staff and guide are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Small museum, gift shop and cafe. Gives you that little town or family run operation. Its not that expensive and the tour is about an hour in length. Its cool to chilly, so be prepared with some extra layers, also, is obviously dusty and dirty, so dress appropriately. Its something to experience at least once and you can fully appreciate the history of the place.
Amazing tour!!! So much to see and our guide Bonnie was wonderful. It was very interesting to see the mines and would highly suggest going.
This is one of the best day trips you can make from St. Johns . If you make it to the #2 mine tour make sure you end up on Bonnies tour, she is incredibly knowledgeable and has so many personal connections to the mine youll be hard pressed to find a more informative tour guide in Newfoundland.
Quaint hotel under renovation great food prepared by owner. Tour of #2 iron ore mine excellent !
We took the tour of the first 650 feet underground of Mine #2 which goes over 2 miles under the ocean (Conception Bay). The mine, opened in the late 1890s, has been inactive and left in a native state since closed in the mid 20th century. Working conditions then would be illegal under todays standards and laws. Impressive...must visit on Bell Island.
Great tour. Learned lots. A must do if you can get there.
If you can take the tour with Bonnie, do it. What an incredible experience! Shes a real Newfoundland story teller - she could sing me the phone book and itd be happy. This is a stop not to be missed when you are on Bell Island. Dress warmly... The thermometer in the caves said 5c
Great place to visit. Lots of artifacts in the museum to Learn about. We had a Great tour of the mine and bought some nice souvenirs from the gift shop. The tour guide Bonnie was amazing and very knowledgeable and gave us an amazing tour.
Beautiful! Went to the minesAmazing iron ore rock formations and the guide was entertaining (ask for Ed)Unbelievable what the miners went through - very dangerous job. .
Dont put off visiting the mines anymore. Its a once in a lifetime experience that will leave you changed for life as you learn of the heartache and struggle of the miners and their families surviving the harshness of underground mining and the severe climate on an island in the North Atlantic.
What an amazing tour. Our guide Ed knew all of the details and provided not only a tour but an “adventure” . Would recommend to all visiting the island.
Nice little museum and an educational visit to the underground Iron Ore mine. Also have coffee shop, gift shop. They have a Bell Island map and Ferry schedule there. Note the ferries dont always leave on time.
The mine tour is awesome. Tour guide Bernie is very knowledgeable and funny, her character makes the tour very interesting! The fact that you can actually walk into the mine is super cool! Definitely recommend to anyone who are interested to know more about mining industry on Bell Island.
The museum had great artifacts from Bell Island past. The mine tour was awesome with our tour guide adding personal touch.
