Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial - Historical place in Kigali, Rwanda
Amazing preservation of the place, which kind of immerses you on a virtual journey whilst you are being told the story... I really love the memorial stones
It was humbling. My respect for the Military went up!
Enjoy my visit . Enjoyed the guide and stories . Glad to visit
Well preserved, no entrance fee (donation recommended if you can give). Really moving experience.
Didnt know the history about this but it was worth seeing. Young soldiers probably on thier first mission killed for hate when they were doing thier duty.
Its a memorial place
Well conserved place full of history. No entrance fee, just donation if youre able to
A piece of history. Ive never experienced war in my life, but to see what has happened in Rwanda 🇷🇼 Never again! Peace and dialogue and respect for one another is always better . Nobody gets better with wars, it only produces set backsThese officers that died in this were very young officers who were on peace keeping duties. These pillars represents each of the fallen soldiers
Not much to see but a claustrophobic reminder of the danger UN peacekeepers face, and the impossible situations in which member states put them.
Sad place to visit in memory of the sacrifice of 10 Belgian soldiers brutally murdered by the govt of Rwanda during the 1994 genocide
Sobering spot that really makes you think. The madness of war really gets to you here. The place is a bit hidden these days behind the covid testing facilities, but can be found with a bit of effort
The memorial touched my heart.. in addition to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, this place gives a visual snapshot of how grave the situation was. I was heart broken to hear what happened to the Belgian soldiers. This places take you closer to the history of Kigali.
Kigali tour was amazing, Belgian war memorial
Hard to find the right words to describe this place. Its certainly humbling to most people. Hard to understand why some like to pose in the door frame smiling where people were shot dead.
Still have some construction works undergoing. Good place with a tent near by to host events. At the time of arrival there was tight security. Accessibility restricted to some extent.
A space to reflect, learn and pray. The brutality meted out to the Belgian peacekeepers and former prime minister demonstrates how low we can sink as human beings. But contrast that with the restoration going on in the nation today, which is a tribute, at least, to what those who lost their lives were working for. May Rwanda continue to find its humanity again and reach the Godly potential we all have.
It has a long history behind Belgian commandos died while on peace keeping mission in Rwanda during the Tutsi genocide. It requires people with strong hearts to visit the place
Small, informative and moving. Kind of hidden within the convention center grounds, but the security guard was very helpful.
Rich history. Well maintained and detailed flow of events. May they RIP
A quite special location with a lot of background information about the UN soldiars who got killed. Not that easy to find and parking is not available.
Very sad place to visit but worth the visit.
A must see if you are in Rwanda. 🇷🇼 A little bit more explanation would be appreciated.
Detailed information about the 10 Belgian peackeepers who were killed duing the 1994 genocide in Rwanda trying to protect the Deputy Prime Minister. They failed to do this. She was found executed with her husband and they were promised safe passage is they disarmed themselves wnnd then attacked and killed after their colleagues did not show up to rescue them. A story of indecision, duplicity, bravery, fear, powerlessness. Told in a bullet riddled building with detailed story boards through 3 rooms.
Awesome place.
Heres another sad story worth learning about. Yes we wrote tribute and took beautiful pictures in the stones. Its free entry and its next to the Kigali exhibition and cultural village
A sober reflection of cruelty of humans against each other. When two fight, much more than the two suffer
This Memorial is a testament to post genocide Rwanda and the forceful introspection the Country is taking. It is also a Memorial and caution to the costs of inaction of the international community in the face of genocide. The brave international peace keepers who lost their lives here must be remembered; victims of inaction by the international community and a tragic example of the dual edge of following orders and complying with the directives of international bureaucrats that sometimes leads to success but in this case ensured death. Standing in the space where these soldiers lost their lives is powerful and is required to honor their sacrifice if you visit Kigali
This is ZEBRA CHOCOLATE
I salute your bravery! Rest in peace as we shall remember you!
Hereos died in a place they werent supposed to die
Emotional experience about the genocide which claimed the lives of around 800000 people.
10 Beligian UN peace keepers who were protecting the Prime Minister of Rwanda in 1994 were surrounded by the military and murdered at this point, check it out for more information about the peace keepers.
Highly emotional location.
Touching. Sad.Good to keep in memory to prevent reoccurrence
Nice place, dont forget your history
Yet another reminder of how much hatred, can be like a world fire, engulfing anyone in its path, regardless of origins or intentions. This is the place where, on 7 April, 1994, the then Rwandan Prime Minister and 10 Belgian Commandos/ UN Peacemakers, detailed to protect her, were cornered and shot dead ...
Its a bit weird giving a place like this 5* but it was extremely fascinating and well run and was in the middle of being painted too.Its not very big so only took around 30 minutes with the guide happy to show us around and explain things. The sculptures are especially impressive.
You see holes in some walls made by machine gun bullets. It leaves memories of how the Belgian commandos fought hard till their last breathe.
They was trying to protect the ex prime minister.
This is the place where you can have a good relaxation in case of some stresses
A good place for some sober reflections on the past.
Incredibly moving memorial to the 10 Belgian commandos murdered during the initial phase of the Rwandan genocide. Although small, it is very raw and well done.
If you are in Rwanda please visit this place... Small place with a huge lesson
Well never forget Belgian peacekeepers&genocide against Tutsi in 1994,RIP to all.
Please to remember brave men who died for the peace.
Small but impressive place. Can know better about history of Rwanda.
This is a MUST see in Kigali, Rwanda.I found the visit to Belgium Camp Kigali memorial site where the ten Belgium peacekeepers were murdered at the start of the 100-day Rwandan genocide very heart-rending because the barracks are preserved in the exact condition it was in on the day of the massacre. It is almost as if time has stood still for the past 24 years from that fateful day on the 7 April 1994. Poignant also maybe for me because I was a soldier once and could read into the concealed signs of the conflict and feel the anguish of the ten young cornered Belgium peace keepers before their slaughter.DirectionsTravel south from the KN2 round-a-bout on KN3 Avenue pass the Gorilla statue, the Mariotte and Serena Hotels until the road makes a 90-degree right turn. There is a small sign on wall of the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village pointing left, proceed for 50 metres and turn right into Belgium Peacekeepers Memorial.
Sad place and be there learn what happened
There is a lot of lessons here! If you are in Kigali you must visit it !Make sure not to get lost, because the area around it is closed, its entrance wasnt clear the time I visited it, so I was around searching and asking for a while.
Good, small place to remember the Belgian victims to UN-operatin in Rwanda.
