Landmark medieval fortified tower on tiny river island with rooftop terrace offering estuary views.
Belém Tower in Evora
Description
Such a spectacular scenery. There were many people in line to enter, so I didnt go inside as I didnt want to wait. Its very beautiful outside you can sit on the side and enjoy the view.
MoreBelen Tower is a really interesting historical monument and is worth visiting if your interested in medieval, Portuguese or military history. They only allow around 40 people inside every 20 minutes, we had to queue for around 30 minutes before entering. The tickets cost €6 each but was worth it in my opinion.
MoreWe took a waterside stroll up towards the tower, which by itself is quite worth it. There was a small queue for entering the tower, but no more than 10 minutes. The tower is quite spectacular, but also very spartan, minimalistic. No plethora of information, history etc. It has a certain naked charm, might not be to everyones taste, but I liked it.
MoreA historical landmark with a lot of history making it the UNESCO World Heritage List attraction it is today. You cross a short bridge over the water in groups to get to the entrance into this quite small tower with rooms, narrow winding stairs, lookout points, and an open deck. Near the base are windows in the walls designed to allow cannons to fire upon enemy ships. You dont get to go right to the top though, and the viewing windows in the upper areas have limited view. Its quite a fascinating place to visit if you get the chance however theres a couple of drawbacks. The tower is small inside and the crowds including the one way flow needs to be managed. This means that the line to get in moves very slowly so you could be up for quite a wait on the sun. So if youre particularly interested in the history of the tower or have plenty of time, you might need to time or rearrange your visit with the rest of your itinerary.
MoreSmall unique castle architecture, perfect for people who are interested in the history and design of the infrastructure. Surrounded by the beautiful sea, it’s perfect to stop by to appreciate the art. There is a very small sand section in front of the castle.Unfortunately we couldn’t go in, but the castle isn’t that big to explore so taking photos outside is good enough.Lovely quiet area around the castle but it is definitely a place you don’t stay for long and is just a quick stop by.
MoreWhat can you say about this key landmark of Lisbon? Its beautiful. Unfortunately, we arrived after it closed (ticket office closed at 5, last admission is 5:30but still spent time admiring it from three sides. If you have the Lisboa Card, admission is free.
MoreWe went on a Sunday and instead of the €3 entrance fee it was free. Tickets are available from a booth in the park. The queue on a little wooden bridge with no shade to get in took about 45 minutes to the drawbridge.People were being let in by groups of thirty or so.There are about twenty stone steps up to the first level and then another queue to get into the main tower. Be warned, its 70+ stone steps up a tight spiral staircase. The views from the second level are better because its possible to go out on the balcony. When you get back down to the first level you can hang about and take more photos but then theres another wait to get out.We had a look around the ground level where the cannons were located. There were no toilets, no places to sit, no drinks or snacks or gift shop.
MoreOne of the most iconic landmark of Lisbon. My all time favorite place 😍Pictures taken in the morning(just after sunriseand evening(just before sunset).
MoreA bit of history. 6€ to enter. Takes about 30-45 minutes to walk through. Most of the time is spent trying to go up and down the stairs as it’s a very narrow staircase for both directions. Nice view from top.
MoreI went on a very rainy/foggy day but you can still appreciate the tower. The view from the outside is amazing, sadly I didnt get to see the inside because I was lacking of time. But I would recommend going there if you are already around the other tourist places.
MoreOne of the must-see points of Lisbon and Portugal. Totally worth seeing!! Amazing view, amazing atmosphere. Highly recommended! If you would like to visit inside of the tower, you should buy tickets which are sold in the park around the tower!
MoreVery interesting place with lots of history!Only drawback are long lines, lack of information to listen to while inside, and tower rooms are bare empty.Views of the tower and from the tower are amazing. Good place to see while in Lisbon.
MoreThe tower has an amazing architecture and I had the chance to see it from land & river as well. But I feel like it is not a must to visit it from the inside. There queue was long and we had to wait in the sun and as you enter it you have to sit again in a queue to go up and then down. The view from it was nice, but there are other places in Lisbon from where you can get the same view. I totally recommend visiting it, but not necessarily from the inside.
MorePlease be aware that despite buying tickets in advance you gave to queue outside in the sun for well over a hour. So best to get your tickets on site so that if you are not happy to queue up you can decide to leave and not waste your money. The queue continues inside, lounging around in the sun, end or cold because the tower can only accommodate single file of people given the very narrow stairs. So again be prepared to spend over an hour lining up. Definitely not a place to bring babies and small children. Also not ideal for the elderly and disabled.Viewing the tower takes a maximum 10mins, but, queuing up over 2-3hours.The view over the river is beautiful and the fact that the tower was made to accommodate comforts for the king, meetings took place here and retention of the trap doors through which prisoners were thrown down as well as the line of cannons are pretty good.Watching the sunset from here is also great and we did wade into the water full of fishes, to refresh our weary legs. Unfortunately a lot of hats get blown off here. So mind yours despite the sun and heat.
MoreSplendid location by the river. Can get super crowded. I would suggest not waiting in lines (yes, there can be at least two, one on the end of the bridge and one after getting in, before the entrance to the tower on the first floor- the interior is nice with a balcony with beautiful views, but if you have to wait in line for more than 30 minutes, I dont think its worth going in.
MoreThe Tower of Lines! Really neat tower on the coast of the Tagus overlooking the river. Its technically on an "island" with a wooden bridge to get in, which accommodates the long line you can expect to wait in. After getting in, you can enjoy views from between the parapets while waiting in the long line to go up another floor, where you can read about the room while you wait in line to climb the spiral staircase to the next room. Awaiting you upstairs is a very similar room where you can wait in line again to get to the top floor, where youll find a line to walk back down the stairs to where you came from! Each room offers a decent, semi-obstructed view of the river/coast and a little plaque explaining the history. There are also some neat cannons for photo-ops once you get back downstairs before you exit. Neat history, cool architecture, and plenty of time to read about and admire it while you wait in the Tower of Lines!
MoreBeautiful place and definitely worth a visit. Can recommend buying to lisbon pass if you visit this and other attractions! As you skip long queues some places!
MoreOnly visited due to buying the combination tickets with the monastery. Was very underwhelming and you probably get better views on the outside. You can skip to the front of the queue if you have small children (which was probably the highlight of the visit). Once inside there was a lengthy queue for the top tower but wasn’t greatly impressive
MoreIconic place. Must go in Lisbon, but high temperature of these days and long queue to get in… if I go beck in time, I would just enjoy the outside, since inside is empty of anything, apart the very interesting architecture.
MoreVery nice architecture. It looks like a mini castle. The small water pool next to the building makes good opportunities for photo shooting. If you want to avoid the crowd and the heat plann an early morning visit. There is a small restaurant in the nearby which could be used as a refresher. The views are also breathtaking.
MoreIf I had to give this the title of a movie it would be The good, the bad and the ugly.Let me start with the good. The tower looks beautiful from the outside and the views from inside it are just as much. On a very hot day (just like it was when we went therewalking inside the tower and feeling a slight cold breeze is just refreshing. The bad and the ugly (I have to put these two together). If you want to visit it (not sure if its always as crowded as it was when we wentbuy tickets online and get ready to wait in a line.I bought the tickets for it online 2 hours before we got there. Otherwise we wouldve had to wait at least 15 minutes in the queue. Dont worry. Theres more queues after. We waited another 15-20 minutes to get inside the place because theres limited capacity and I think that they waited until everyone that was already inside came out.Did you think those were all the queues? No. We wanted to go up the tower as well so we waited another 20 minutes in another line to do so.Im just saying that if you wanna see the Belém Tower you better have patience, a hat and sunscreen.4 stars for the tower, 2 star for the queues.
MoreI always wanted to see Belem Tower and Luckily I was able to travel to Portugal and visit it. It was gorgeous as I first saw on the photo and fall in love. It was my first time in Portugal and I love the cuisine, I love the people, architecture etc. everything about Lisbon. Must visit
MoreOne of the top attractions wow, a modern world wonder!I suggest buying Lisbon card if you plan to visit many sights of the city, in this way entrances to certain attractions are either free or with great discount.A few tips for the first time visitors, be prepared to carry plenty of water in summer. Its high on top of the list on visitors wishlist and if you decide to get inside the tower itself, have patience. Long queues are forming due to the nature and structure of the Tower, an old monument which has 90 stairs no lift and only one person at a time can take that staircase. Not recommended for people who are a bit claustrophobic or out of shape (breath whilst climbing stairs). Its just as nice from the outside as from the inside!
MoreWhat a historic place that holds such beauty and strength. You can enter inaide for a set fee and experience the view from a historical point and place of history. It can be a bit windy, but so worth it. Right next to a beautifully luscious greeeen garden. Absolutely gorgeous!
MoreThis is a very pretty late medieval fort guarding the entrance to the river. It consists of a series of memory rooms with a few paragraphs of information in each about their significance. The entry level contains a selection of replica cannons which is quite nice to see.The staff do a very good job of ensuring the tower is not over crowded but this means a queue builds up round the the bastion walls and we were waiting 25 minutes to take a look inside the tower.I feel that there could be more Information around the walls of the bastion for reading while in the queue. Most people in the queue currently end up looking at their phones and willing the queue to move fastest but this is a great educational opportunity. All in all it’s worth a visit but go early to skip the tower queue, at the moment there isn’t really much else to keep your attention for the queues duration
MoreThis was originally a fort, which became a prison and is now a museum you can tour with tickets. It is on the marina, close to Portugals April 25th bridge (Californias Golden Gate!and is quite beautiful and "romantic!"
MoreWent here because of the reviews. Went to the monastery first then walked down to the tower, it is a bit of a hike over a walking bridge with stairs. Once we got there it was 6euros per person so not bad on price but honestly, could have saved the $ and just looked from the base of the tower. Once you go in there is a like courtyard. You wait 30min or so to go up the tower to see the same views as the ground level and you don’t get to go to the top. The rooms are small and empty. Not worth they hype.
MoreCertainly the main Lisbon landmark is the Belem tower, standing right on the Tagus river in the same name part of town.It dates back to 16c when it was used as a ceremonial orientation landmark for famous explorers returning from world voyages entering Lisbon harbor.Built at the peak of colonial Portugal it resembles outstanding flamboyant Gothic - Manueline architecture. However, despite the exteriors beauty, the interiors are underwhelming. This June I did not enter it, as I was there inside 9 years ago and left pretty disappointed - mostly empty with some cannons and open terrace, left after 10 min.I enclose pics from both visits, so conclude yourself.
MoreIt was really cool to see and take pictures! We got there after closing so werent able to enter inside. But it was worth visiting even just to see and take pictures outside. It is unique compared to most other sights in Lisbon.
MoreReally nice tower right on the water. It looks better in person. I took off one star because the view isnt that much better than the public path and the sand from the wind make it really tough to take photos closer to the castle. Still very cool
MoreGreat place to check off the bucket list but not worth paying to go inside. In my opinion the lines are extremely long and there are much better castles elsewhere to visit in Portugal! Fun spot to take pictures though!
MoreThose who know will know that this is the birth place of the Pastel de Nata. THERE ARE NO OTHERS! an easy half day to spend, going for coffee and tasting the local delicacies. Not far from central Lisbon. A simple tram ride away. Definitely a priority!
MoreAmazing place with so much of history. Not very far from the city of Lisbon and it’s easy to get to. On a sunny day this place glows and the later it gets in the day, more the people. Worth visiting.
MoreBelem Tower is inscribed on the UNESCO list of the world. Full of an amazing story. It looks very beautiful against the background of the Tagus River. It should be added to one of your sightseeing points. I recommend you to see it with your own eyes 🙂
MoreVery interesting and unique place. There is a big part next to it where you can buy ice cream, juice, sandwiches. This is very popular place, so if you are photographer, try to be there early in the morning. Make sure you view the tower from all sides. Each side has unique view.
MoreBeautiful view, beautiful place. The park around there is a wonderful place for spending time on weekends. The tower is a little bit smaller than I was expecting, but is a mandatory spot to discover in Lisbon.
MoreBeautiful battle tower, with narrow stairs. There are 93 stairs to the 4th floor so keep that in mind if stairs arent for you. The main observation deck is beautiful and has a good view of the river, the bridge and the monument nearby!
Morethis doesnt make sense. there was a waiting line for tickets, a line to enter the tower, a line to get to the staircase, a line in mid-staircase and - of course - a line to get downstairs. each line is 15-20 minutes of wait. this small tower - otherwise a pleasant example of military architecture - which is a total of 4 small empty chambers, took us more than 2 hours to visit. I appreciate the patience of the service crew but the tour is ridiculous and waste of 6 EUR. get yourself ice cream, lie down on a lawn nearby and enjoy the view from the outside
MoreVery quick visit here at this tower. It’d near other attractions so if you’re in the area and have some time you should visit but I wouldn’t go out of my way for this place. You have to get tickets first and then proceed to the tower through the drawbridge
MoreBreathtaking place. Definitely worth to visit. I was impressed to see the castle in the water, and this small beach where you can take a photo in front of the castle. Might be too crowded. Also, there is a nice park nearby, and many other sightseeing are very close
MoreThis is a cute tourist attraction. You cant go in it but its nice to look at. Lots of fun restaurants and shops along the promenade. Worth t he stop but not for long
MoreOne little tower By the River or ocean that you can take some time visiting to climb the twisted stairway. Watch your stepsWondering if your claustrophobic I would not recommend you to visit this location as most of the areas and pathway of very very tiny and tightsIf you have a lisbon card then you may also enter this area for free just remember to get your ticket on the way to the tower in the park. there is a booth with staff station there, just show them to card and they will print you the ticket 🎟. There is signs and pictures all around theres no way you can miss it
MoreSuch a beautiful tower. Its amazing how its held up over the course of time and the stories it could tell. Beautiful day, not a lot of people. Nice that there is a large green space to relax and just take it in (not supposed to bring dogs, but some people do). Oh, and there is a bathroom near the road.
MoreGorgeous. I arrived at around 7am and was the only one there for nearly 30 minutes. The tower wasn’t open yet, but it was nice to be able to walk around it and take pictures without it being swamped with people (as it was shortly thereafter).
MoreGreat iconic location. We didnt go inside but our kids loved playing in the beach by the tower, and exploring the park around the area.Good spot for food and people watching too. There seems to be a lot to see and do around the tower but we didnt get to explore so much as we had small kids with us.An obvious must visit in Lisbon..
MoreI have been here twice. It’s a must visit place in Belém. The Tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the architecture design is striking. Standing in the tower helps you understand why It used to serve as a gateway to the city of Lisbon and as a defense against possible invasions and attacks from the Tagus.
MoreSuch a beautiful scenery. This stunning UNESCO World Heritage tower was once the port of embarkation for Portuguese explorers and a ceremonial gateway to the capital. These cloudy sunset made the place even more magical and special. Nevertheless, what fascinated me the most was the little bay with waves constantly splashing to our feet.
MoreHow charming and delightful! It is a trek to get to from Lisbon center proper but we’ll worth the trip. Take the train three stops and you are there. At low tide, one can walk across the sand to the tower. It is closed on Mondays. The tower is a fine example of Manuelian architecture and while small, very beautiful. The nearby park is a great place to relax for a while after the monastery or many of the museums.
MoreSuch a gorgeous tower on the sea. Lovely to visit inside as well and get great views. The ticket office is in the park and you need a ticket to go inside. Otherwise it is free to admire from the outside.Someone was playing the violin outside which really added to the experience.
MoreA very nice architectural masterpiece built at the sea shore. It looks amazing on the sunset and you can stay on the stairs located in front of it to admire the beautiful view. Being a touristic attraction its a bit crowded during the day but you can visit it on the sunset when the landscape is amazing.
