Venerable zoo, founded in 1906, with traditional landscaping & native animals such as pandas.
I visited this zoo in the summer of 2013, and was so traumatised by what I saw that I haven’t been to a zoo since. Reading more recent reviews and seeing pictures I can see nothing has changed in 10 years. Heartbreaking. Animals showing obvious, clear signs of mental distress. No shade or privacy for them at all. No water in blistering heat. People bang on the glass and cages for photos. A torture chamber. Do not go if you do not want to carry a burden on your heart forever, seriously
A nice city zoo in Beijing. Last time I visited here is Jun 2018.
I was there in 2018, Id say its a big zoo with a lot of animals. However, I must say some of the animals looked like they werent in the best conditions, especially the biggest mammals. If you want to see pandas very closely, maybe you wont have luck. When I went there, the pandas didnt want to come out and approach us. They were literally sitting behind the doors to get inside the facility.
Recommend u to go with family its a huge place... u can spend a whole day there... I think its the biggest zoo I ever visited in my life so far
PANDAS!!!!Walking around. Chilling out. Playing. Eating bamboo - pandas!! I was thrilled. Went at feeding time. Saw one guy munch on a bamboo stick. The wholesomeness of it 🥰
A very big zoo but not the best zoo only worth going if you want to see Pandas which are rare to see in Europe so worth going to see them. There was no queue or wait to see the Pandas.
We went here because of the panda sanctuary, its quite amazing since many range of animals and species that they kept. Its not a large zoo but it would be better if the price is cheaper. The zoo can be reach by train station.
Beijing zoo is easy to get to, jump off at Beijing Zoo station. Tickets are cheap: under $5. There are many giant pandas and the exhibit is extensive. The zoo is expansive with a wide rage of animals There is a general feeling of neglect that goes with many zoos which may leave some visitors feeling disappointed.
This is a huge zoo. The main attraction ofcourse are the pandas though i found the polar bear also very interesting. There is a shuttle available inside which is a waste. Dont take it.Its better to walk the entire zoo.We went in the winters.A lot of animals are kept indoors due to the cold so not the best time to go.
I think this place is a bit old nowYou get to see pandas, of course it’s a Chinese zooAnd the aquarium is big and old, so many sales people want to sale kids stuff, typical Chinese stuff again
If you want to see giant pandas, this is the place. There were a lot of people and it was hot and humid, but we got to see some cool animals and take pictures. White tiger even. Worth the visit. Use the metro to get there, its reliable and convenient. Just avoid rush hour on both ends of the day. Its miserable during that time, althoughim sure still better than sitting in traffic.
What a fantastic place in the heart of Beijing. There is so much to see in this vast attraction. We only had 1/2 a day to spend here but you could easily spent to whole day exploring the grounds. The zoo has a vast array of areas dedicated to various species of animals. The Pandas are a huge draw and simply great to see. @50whatnow
Not that too impressive. Except for the pandas nothing more wonderful is. You do have bears, lions tigers polar bears, crocodiles name the animal and you would find it in the zoo. Moreover, the zoo is big if you want to visit te entire zoo require an entire day. Also do no go in the summers as it is hot it is difficult to walk. Please prefer a pleasant weather. Very easily accessible via metro. There is a metro station just in front of the zoo. Also, the ticket is for 19 rmb and 9.5 rmb if you are a student. So dont forget to carry your student id card
"Huge green area with few animals though"The animals are sleeping most of the time due to tranquilizers😠. I gave it 2 stars because the green scenery is very picturesque and the pandas where cute but very sleepy as well.
A city zoo in downtown with history. Various kinds of animals originate from all over the world. Very crowded during the weekends and holidays. Limited parking space. Best place to see pandas in Beijing. Better not go there on holidays.
Pandas! The rest of the zoo is a basic zoo with the regular stuff: see elephants, pet llamas, American animals etc. But, that really doesnt matter because...pandas! There are at least a dozen of them! Passport may be required for your entrance.
The zoo is wide and clean. There were many people come to visit here because it was the peak season and summer holiday. Mostly with children because they had school holiday too. The public toilet are not as horror as I thought before. You can also see the panda, the animal icon of the country here. No need to go to Sichuan. Unfortunately, they frequenly sleep!

The zoo has some very beautiful greenery and parts where it is very relaxing to be with the family. But the tiger/lion exhitbit was sad and the state the zebras nails were in looked painful. The poor animal didnt walk much and it looked uncomfortable. Better care and maintence is needed. But i would still recommend going to see the Pandas. They are very lazy on a hot sunny day so i would choose my day and time wisely.
A must do activity for Beijine. This Zoo is fantastic. Keep in mind the basic entrance does not include the Panda holding area, the extra payment is minimal but well worth the visit. The monkey and bird area is also well managed.
In desperate need of maintenance. The animals look depressed. Lots of the cages are empty. The cages lack embellishment, they are bare bones. All of the food carts/ eaterys/ stores were closed while we were there. The zoos one redeming quality were the grounds. The grounds were beautiful. They had lush greenery, a nice lake, a bridge, and swans in the water.
1. Really need to clean the looking glass of the enclosures.2. Enforce stronger regulation on tourists banging on the enclosures.Great experience seeing the pandas in particular
We enjoy the visit in the zoo yesterday and it was all very nice. A lot of species there as White tigers and others. I had some same experience with the Berlin with a little bit of advantage for Berlin
Right, to start off with the Zoo has some amazing sights and enclosures like the Panda enclosure which seems to be the most looked after and constructed with the animals welfare in mind. This is a big zoo and offers plenty of activities and places to sit down for a picnic. Not not very central so it might take you some time to get there depending on which part of the city youre staying in. Prices were reasonable and overall the zoo seemed clean and quite popular. However, when it comes down to animal welfare this zoo fails in so many cases. Most of which are the elephant enclosures which are way too small and the elephants themselves seemed stressed and in poor shape. Most of the enclosures are basically concrete rooms with little to no resemblance to whatever environment the animals should be living in. I understand that Chinese culture is different, however compared to the Panda enclosure (which is terrific and well donenearly every other enclosure seems well bellow standards. Beijing is a beautiful city and this zoo just does not cut it. Whomever is in charge of it should put a bit more effort in providing proper conditions for the rest of the animals and make sure that people behave well within the grounds. Far too many times Ive seen children tapping on enclosure windows or throwing plastic bottles within the enclosures.Other enclosure which were way way too bad were the Polar Bear enclosure, the Tigers enclosure and other big cats and, although not obvious at first sight, the monkeys enclosure (quite a few of the little fellas had injured limbs or seemed to have some skin disease).Overall the zoo looks beautiful and its floral arrangement is on par with other Chinese parks, well looked after and giving out a relaxing atmosphere. I docked two stars purely because of the poor conditions some animals have. It would be unfair to give it a complete negative review as the zoo its quite a sight to see. I do hope officials will work harder to bring this zoo to proper standards.
We enjoyed our visit seeing then pandas and the entrance price was very reasonable. Most of the cages were smaller, but others were more adequate. It could use a little sprucing up. The childrens area inside where the playground is costs an additional fee. Glad we visited, but would not go back.
Monkeys were the best animals in the zoo. Saw three Pandas not quite what I was expecting and felt very sorry for the lions small cages.
Nice Zoo Park with a lot of animals. But somehow... not very well maintain... Maybe because I went during their Winter period where most animals got lazy. If you like to take photos, please bring a DSLR to capture a clearer picture.
Only attraction are Giant Pandas and even these animals are kept in dirty enclosures with pathetic smell. Most of the enclosures are dirty and poorly maintained. Access to the zoo is easy via metro. Inside zoo we also has a ferry ride which looks good but the water stream looks so dirty.
- Went there to see pandas and we werent disappointed! They were so cute! We got there around 1 PM and caught some of them asleep while others were eating.- The place was cleaner than I expected. There are shops inside where you can buy food and souvenirs from, theyre more expensive though.- Be sure to wear comfortable shoes because its a very long walk around the zoo.- They have an impressive collection of reptiles and amphibians. Dont miss that! Also, walk around the lake/lagoon and enjoy the view.- Oh, be sure to expect chinese people (not just kids but adultstapping on the glass cages even though there are reminders in both mandarin and english not to do that displayed everywhere 😠
The Beijing Zoo was very exciting experience that im very happy that we decided to squeeze into our initerary for a part of the day. It is very easily accessible via the metro, which is that path that we took and the facilities themself are very clean. I had lower expectations after reading a couple TripAdvisor reviews prior to coming about expectations. But none of those were true at all, all of the animals were clean and they looked like they had as much space as any other Western zoo that Ive been to. Also more importantly, they have PANDAS! They were a joy to see, and dont worry, there as re multiple of them (st least 5 during our visit). So if the first panda is asleep with its butt facing the crowd, just keep moving along, maybe the next one will be wide awake and active. I highly recommend swinging by the Beijing Zoo to check ot ot on your vacation.
Im from the "World Famous San Diego Zoo", so its hard to compare, but the grounds are beautiful. Lots is water and trees. Only "hole in the floor" toilets, though.
you can see world famous giant panda(大熊猫here. The Beijing Zoo is a zoological park in Beijing, the capital of the Peoples Republic of China, in Xicheng District. Founded in 1906 during the late Qing dynasty, it is one of the oldest zoos in China. The zoo is also a center of zoological research that studies and breeds rare animals from various continents.
Like most Zoos its a mixed bag. Some of the animals, such as the Pandas, are well looked after but the Grizzly Bear and white tiger show signs of distress. One of the pandas was clearly playing to the camera, it was hilarious. The aquarium is spectacular. The displays are enormous. Theres a wide variety of marine line, including some gigantic fish and weird dolphins that Ive never seen before. Unlike the zoo, all the animals were in immaculate condition. They do seem happy. Seeing a shark up close was an incredible experience.
Great place to bring childrenLots of animal availableYou can see panda in panda house. I heard too much about panda house , but it’s simple there are four room for panda in which one panda each in thisRiver also available inside the Zoo area in which steamer is runningFish aquarium also available in adjacent too Zoo boundary
Well maintained. Great mix of animals from different continents. Ample seating area to rest our feet. Eateries are costly, recommend to bring own food and drinks.Subway at door step and bus hub just across the road. Easy reach.
Its a huge zoo, great place to hang around, too bad many zones are under renovation and there werent many animals when we visited. This zoo is build on a historical site, very beautiful but need a better management. Good thing is, unlike many other touristy area in China, there is no scammer on the ticket office, you just pay fair rate to enjoy the facilities.Oh and its the best place to visit if you want to see Pandas but only have short time in Beijing
Good place to bring the kids and the entrance fee is around 15cny. It is also a good place to have picnic and watch the sun set. There were 3 pandas caged separately in glass when we visited. Park closes at 5pm.
Very large and wonderful. His salary is beautiful and I have many kinds of animals and birds I will visit again
The zoo is very large with a good selection of native and foreign animals.Well set out with divisions for main attractions and locations.
The zoo is a huge but very depressing. All the animals are dirty and cage individually. But you can see pandas... So theres that.
Very nice zoo, well maintained. Lots of rare animals. Can easily access by bus, and subway.
A beautiful zoo to visit the very cute pandas. There are also some really nice spots to sit by the water and enjoy some quiet time.
The main reason I gave this place a 2 star rating is because of how the animals are kept. If you love animals and seeing them looking down makes you sad trust me this is not for you. I do understand why people are happy and thats because they can see the different types of animals. I was happy to get to see the giant pandas but as I walked around the park I began to cry and this was because of how the animals are kept. The kangaroo had no hop left they dragged their feet to get food and some of them even ate their own poop. I stood looking through the glass and just cried and wanted to leave but I had to see the elephants for me that was important. I got to the the place where they kept them, I was broken to see how small the cage is and how they have to life. The other cage was huge but it was empty and they put them in the smaller cages. It was so hurtful but I was amazed how the mother didnt show her baby she was tired and kept playing along with her even though she at times just needed to stop.. The zoo advertisers alot of animals but all of them are not there. They had no hippos, lions, polar bears and flamingos to mention some. Alot were missing and thats a fact but they dont tell you this. The pandas are well kept and very beautiful but like I said if you are an animal lover you will be very said to see the conditions in which they are kept.
Went during the off season. (Jan 14 2018Crowds were almost non existent. This zoo has its own metro station and is very easy to get to. Rhinos, tigers and some other African animals were not on display. Youll still be able to see the pandas, monkeys and elephants.
For the capital of the (secondmost powerful country in the world, this zoo is depressing. The exhibits were very small and some of the smaller animals did look neglected. The pandas were fun to see.
This zoo is big and nice. You can see pandas here. But it may look like animals are not taken enough care of.
Horrible conditions for the animals. Too hot, too noisy, too dirty, Chinese kids and their parents dont know how to behave. They bang on cages windows like idiots, yell all the time. I feel really sorry for the poor animals. Same thing is inside the aquarium. Many species are put in tiny aquariums for fun effect, just look at the red fish on my photo below. "Or, how cute! So many fish come to my side to take a photo with me!" After seeing that, I ran away from that hell place. By the way, a ticket to the aquarium costs 150 yuan-which is absolutely doesnt worth it. Dont waste your time and money, go somewhere else.
Poor conditions (e.g., lack of vegetation), small living spaces (especially the elephantsand windows are full of handprints, which makes it difficult to see certain animals... Is it that difficult to clean windows every now and then?! It was cool to see pandas, but I could have done without the experience. Also, note that there are no European toilets there, so be prepared to squat!
World class zoo. Must go! Best value for all family. Must spend one whole day here.Dont miss to visit Panda house.
Thе Zoo is really depressing. The panda was lying emotionless on the floor, while kids were banging on the glass. Other animals were anxiously walking trying to get to their back areas, which were locked. The polar bear was confined to an extremely unnatural environment all covered in plastic, with no natural light! Most cages lack natural lighting and air! The space for the cheetah is too small. People were throwing junk food to the brown bears and there were no guards around to stop them. The animals seem neglected, anxious or deprived.I went there to take pictures for an environmental project and unfortunately the conditions were much worse then I expected. I know that there is no solution to this, zoos in general, but please at least keep quiet in the zoo, dont scream at the animals, bang on their cages, or give them junk food!!!
