Best place to take boat rides on the Baticaloa lagoon. Safe parking. 1 hour ride cost me Rs.5000 as of May 2022. Light house is right next to boat park.
Batticaloa lighthouse is located in a beautiful surrounding. You can do boat ride on the lake from this location. Please check and agree the price before you go on the boat ride. Some will try to charge you a fortune if you don’t agree the price (The price for a full ride is Rs 2000-4000). The price per ride is listed on the board. I was in a hurry so couldn’t do the ride this time. But it’s recommended to go for a boat ride to see the beautiful view of the Batticoloa lagoon, Kalladi Bridge , Batticaloa Fort and the beautiful views of tiny islands.
A light house built in front of a beautiful lagoon. But now it is not allowed to climb due to the collapse .......
Grate but no one is allowed to climb because it is dilapidated .....
Amazing place for boat riding and relaxing evening with family. Beautiful sunset sea views

An ancient site to visit in Batticaloa Sri Lanka. It was built in 1913 and 28 m hight cylindrical Tower to guide the fishermen to reach the batticaloa Barmouth. Next to this lighthouse there is a kids park as well.
Beautiful place... and there is boat rides
You have to travel about 10 minutes from the Batticaloa town to reach the lighthouse. It tis possible to reach the base of the lighthouse, but you cant climb to the top. It has been constructed in 1913, but currently not in operational condition. Closer to the lighthouse, there is a boat service which takes passengers to the nearby Eco Park on the lagoon.
Love Sri LankaLove Sri LankaEXPLOREHOMEBATTICALOA LIGHTHOUSEBATTICALOA LIGHTHOUSEThe Lighthouse’s SignificanceThe Batticaloa Lighthouse, located in the suburb of Paalameenmadu, is a vestige that reminds many visitors of the colonial heritage that still reverberates throughout the city. Built in 1913 by the British administration, the Batticaloa Lighthouse was made to guide many sailors coming from afar during the days of old. As it is built on the eastern-most point of the suburb, the lighthouse sits directly in the crossroads where the Batticaloa Lagoon meets the Indian Ocean, making the 28-metre-high structure visible to any and all ships coming in from the east. The complex also is a park for many families and friends to just relax, while basking in the picturesque views of the lagoon and the ocean. The Batticaloa Lighthouse is perfect to experience the calmer side of the city life, as the lighthouse and its rustic surroundings are ideal to just take it easy. With large ships in the distance, and fishermen on their small outrigger canoes close by, along with the vibrant flora and fauna, the Batticaloa Lighthouse serves as an idyllic location to witness some amazing views of the nearby waters.Navaratnam is the keeper of the Batticaloa ...Photo by: Trent BurkholderThe unique feature about the Batticaloa Lighthouse in Sri Lanka is its strategic location. Also known as the “Muttuwaran” lighthouse, it has been built on the landmark where the ocean meets the lagoon. Few lighthouses in the world can boast this kind of geographical location, but the Muttuvaran Lighthouse in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, is one of them.I visited the Muttuvaran Lighthouse in January 2005 when I was helping the town and its people to rebuild after the tsunami that had devastated the area. The lighthouse is located in the town of Batticaloa, a small and intimate fishing town. The lighthouse is about a 20-minute drive from the heart of the town and is situated on Bar Road.My guide to the lighthouse was Uncle Sonny, a long-term resident of Batticaloa who has been living in the town for over 65 years. As we traveled about three kilometers on Bar Road, we took a turn to the right to Lagoon Road. The drive on Lagoon Road was breathtaking. I felt the lagoon and ocean breeze blowing gently on my face. It was a pleasant mix of ocean and lagoon fragrances.“See that bar of sand in the middle of the ocean?” Uncle pointed his finger at the sea.Sure enough, I was able to see a sand bar about half a kilometer from the lagoon. “A lagoon is an area of shallow water separated from the sea by low banks. That thin bar of sand divides the lagoon from the ocean. The strip of sand got much smaller and washed away after the tsunami,” Uncle Sonny explained. In the distance, I watched in awe at the thin strip of sand dividing the lagoon water from the ocean water; hence the name “Bar” Road.I had never seen this unique geographical feature before and it was fascinating how nature divided these two areas of water. “In the local Tamil language, “Muttuwaran” means “where the lagoon meets the ocean,” Uncle Sonny enlightened me. Now I understood why the lighthouse was called “Muttuwaran.”Reaching the lighthouse site was an ordeal. Along the road was debris from the tsunami. Boats that had crashed against houses, shattered glass, and uprooted trees interfered with our drive. The bridge over the lagoon leading to the lighthouse had partly collapsed. I shivered as we drove the vehicle over the broken bridge, fearing it might give way to the mighty lagoon. After traveling on lagoon road for another three kilometers, Uncle Sonny made a right turn. The lighthouse was at the end of a small byroad.
Nice calm place to relax.Bunch of people go on boat rides to the park which is located in an island .Fishermen prepare the engine boats and go on Test rides before departure.
Nice view, can go to the beach as well. But cant get near the lighthouse cuz its not open to the public bt can see the lighthouse and its amazing piece of work, it got the vintage feeling.
Historical lighthouse which ages more than hundred years. Although you are not permitted to enter inside you can have a closer view from outside. Some boat riding services are also available from here. Few benches are there to sit back and enjoy the view over lagoon. A paid car park is also available here. Only 30rs for a car.Ps: went there again recently(2021/04and had a boat ride. We got the full package which covered kalllady bridge, batticaloa fort, batticaloa gate and around some islands. It cost us 4000.
Old fort built in 1914.
The landmark in Batticaloa.Batticaloas lighthouse is around 5 km from Batticaloa city, on Bar Road.It is a very nice area for cycling or walking.Lighthouse Focal height27 metres (89 ft).Lagoon.
Very old light house. It was built in 1913 and is 28 meters high.
Batticaloa light house is significantly different in appearance to many others I have seen in the island nation. It has withstood the tsunami and years of weathering but still stands majestic unfortunately with little upkeep. No light house tours were available nor there was a chance to peep into the structure to see how the light house keeper accessed the top of the tapering tower.I heard that there was a ladder that was used to climb, keeping it on a series of ledges built within. This is exactly why it will make a tour to the inside of this light house become interesting and adventurous!Hope authorities will open it one day with exciting tours!
An old lighthouse in a picturesque lagoon. Boat rides are available and a Katpaham outlet is there to buy Palm products.
A quite place where you can enjoy a boat ride. You can visit all around Batticaloa’s attractions through waterways for a maximum price 4000 Sri Lankan rupees which includes Gandhi parl,Kallady bridge and some other spots nearby the water ways and a minimum price of 1200 Sri Lankan rupees which includes 3 small island visits. There are some more price ranges also available. Only one bad about the place is you can not go to the top of the lighthouse but you can enjoy an evening look of sunset by the lighthouse. Boating will be closed at 6 PM. Be there early and do not miss the chance to visit Eco Park. Eco park is good for children. You can enjoy a small island park experience out there. Batticaloa is a good place for cheap beach experience. Road from Kalladi is Quite nice and enjoyable. You can see fishing men around the place and also you can get fresh caught fishes from them. It will be nice for a bbq night. Google map is much more accurate in this mater. There are no shops nearby the lighthouse so if you want to enjoy some snacks be prepared for that before you reach the destination. I prefer evening time should be nice but be sure to reach before 6 PM because of boating experience.
Not operating these days. Boat rides available near lighthouse area. Rs 800 to Rs 4000, for max 8 people. Friendly people..

Batticaloa light was built in 1913. about 5-6 kilometers from batticaloa city you can visit this beautiful place. more beautiful at evening times.
By the attractive LagoonSeventeen of us travelling together in a group visited the Batticloa Lighthouse situated by the attractive lagoon. The lighthouse itself was a disappointment. It was all enclosed and we could only see it from afar. The dysfunctional lighthouse is now only of historical significance. There is a government shop that sells palmyra products in front of the light house. Tourists visiting the lighthouse and the lagoon invariably visit this shop.

Batticaloa has beautiful clean beaches and more varities of tasty sea foods. This place aslo very famous for dry fish. Also you will get good veggie foods too. Cost of living is very cheap when compared to other tourist spot.
Nearly 3km away from main station this place on of the main landmark of Batticaloa. Can accessible via private transport including tuk tuk. I was not allowed to go up, not sure whether need to get the permission prior. You can get a beautiful lagoon view from down. If you go up, should be able to see the town, Kallady Bridge, beach and some iconic areas. Opposite of lighthouse you can see a small island and can accessible via boat. Further Boat safari is also available up to Batticaloa Dutch forth and highly recommend to do this.Best time to visit is sunny day. Early morning or evening after 4pm. Car parking is available and subject to pay.Highly recommend place to visit in Batticaloa.
